Bill on Trump* leaving – a montage of Bill’s statements. Not one of them includes a suggestion for what to do about it. Not that I think that should be discussed on national TV, but it’s clear Bill has no clue.

Bernie – Trump’s not leaving. Bernie understands that it’s stupid to announce a plan on national TV, because then his campaign will know what it is and prepare for it/. That doesn’t mean that no one has one. It only means that what we, the people, all need to do is to cast the votes, abd be mentally prepared to take fast action if necessary.

Police Accountability – “I don’t want less police, I want better police” sound good if one has no idea what is going on. What needs to be done is not going to get done by police, no matter how good. It needs done by people who are trained to do their own jobs, not police jobs.

New Rule – is an old rule. And that is why Masha Gessen said (and keeps saying and getting quoted) you cannot rely on institutions.

It’s another tired day here in the CatBox, but at least I have a complete Open Thread, today.  The esophageal problems I’m having interfere with my sleep, so I might have to change my name to Ulysses, so you can call me useless for short. Winking smile  Tomorrow please expect no more than a Personal Update because it’s a morning WWWendy day.  It’s also a holy day in the Church of the Ellipsoid Orb.  The Buccaneers are visiting my Broncos, but the game will not be televised here.  This Wednesday would one of you please cover Tuesday night, when Biden debates, and Trump* masdebates? Short Takes:

From The New Yorker: As Donald J. Trump refuses to commit to a peaceful transfer of power in January, former President Barack Obama suggested that cancelling the White House’s cable-TV account could induce the President to leave.

“This is a man who enjoys watching television,” Obama told reporters. “What if, on Inauguration Day, he picks up the remote and nothing comes on?”

“This seems like the most peaceful way to get him to go,” Obama said.

Obama also said that, in order to avoid a constitutional crisis, the White House’s supply of Diet Coke could also be cut off, but added, “I don’t think it will come to that.”

“Once it dawns on him that there’s no cable, his days will stretch out before him in a vista of emptiness,” Obama said. “No ‘Fox & Friends.’ No Tucker Carlson. And no Shark Week.”

Dang, Andy! This is Obama’s best idea yet! It’s even better than Obamacare!  RESIST!!

Often, before Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg even speaks a word from the bench, you might well have a good idea of what she’s thinking – just from the jabot she selected to wear.

Her collars serve both as a semiology and semaphore for those who are able to interpret them.  So I thought it’d be interesting and fun to familiarize ourselves with some of her favorites.

When Justice Ginsburg was first confirmed to the Supreme Court, she noted that all the robes she found were designed for men:

“You know, the standard robe is made for a man because it has a place for the shirt to show, and the tie,” Ginsburg told the Washington Post in 2009.  “So Sandra Day O’Connor and I thought it would be appropriate if we included as part of our robe something typical of a woman.  So I have many, many collars.”

THE ORIGINAL

This is the jabot she wore for her first official Court portrait.  As is plain to see, it was devoid of any frills, and is very similar to the traditional jabots worn by French justices.

HER FAVORITE

The simple white crocheted collar is what she wore to Pres. Obama’s first address to a joint session of the US Congress on December 31, 2005.  It’s the one she tends to show first when displaying her collection of collars and announces it is her favorite.  She wore it to Pres. Obama’s State of the Union in 2012 (an election year), and her 20th anniversary on the bench in 2013.

It was purchased in Cape Town, South Africa – a fact she’s always sure to share – although I was unable to learn the significance of its provenance.

MAJORITY OPINION

When she is announcing a majority opinion for the Court, this is the collar she always wears.  The beige and egg-yolk yellow crocheted jabot is quite elaborate, featuring pink edges and gold appliqués, all suspended from a gold chain.

She’s quick to add that it was a gift from her law clerks.  (Kind of like the “Best Boss” coffee mug we might give – only a tad classier.)

DISSENT

To express her disapproval (unfortunately too often – but her dissents are eloquent and legendary, and will surely be quoted frequently in future cases) she would wear a bold, black, spiky bib-style necklace decorated with rhinestones from the Banana Republic.  It came from the VIP gift bag at Glamour magazine’s “Women of the Year” gala the year she was an honoree.

It was no coincidence that she also wore it the day after the 2016 election, even though the court had no rulings to issue that day.  It was such a popular design that it’s now available in jewelry, magnets and even paste-on tattoos.

When asked why she chose this one for Dissent, RBG simply said: “It looks fitting for dissent.”

FEMINIST FAVORITE

To convey her sentiments of strong equal rights and feminist support, she will wear the Pegasus Necklace from Stella & Dot (never heard of it, but apparently a fairly well-known jewelry maker).  It was a gift from a fellow lawyer who served with her at ACLU.

The gift-giver, Susan Hyman said, “It reminds me of something a warrior princess like Wonder Woman would wear as armor into battle. It projects strength, confidence, and fearlessness.”

Again, no coincidence that she chose it to wear to the Court’s first official portrait with Brett Kavanaugh on November 30, 2018.

And not surprisingly, RBG sent Ms. Hyman a hand-written “Thank You” note.

STIFFELIO OPERA COLLAR

This crisp white jabot edged in black has a very interesting background history.  It was purchased at the New York Metropolitan Opera gift shop, and is a replica of the collar worn by Plácido Domingo in Verdi’s opera Stiffelio.

The history made more interesting when Domingo surprised Ginsburg with a serenade when she received an honorary law degree from Harvard. “It was glorious,” she said.

LACE – IN HER PORTRAIT

This simple, elegant jabot is what she chose to wear in a portrait she commissioned by Simmie Knox in 2000.

MOVIE POSTER

The movie poster for her 2018 “RBG” documentary simply had a collar and her initials – it was all that was needed.

It became such a popular film that theaters started putting up RBG cardboard cutout figures in their lobbies so you could take selfies of yourself as RBG.

There’s a fun, short (2 minutes) interview with Katie Couric chatting about her collars that’s quite interesting.  It contains a clip of her being serenaded by Domingo.  But I couldn’t find anything embeddable (and the CC doesn’t always work).

https://news.yahoo.com/video/justice-ginsburg-exhibits-her-famous-194517521.html

And this brief video (< 1 minute) is fun.  It had a collar from the University of Hawaii made of French lace, and all the beads came from sand on their beaches.

There are several sites that have quite a few additional photos of RBG and her collars – but none offer any background history (which I obviously enjoy).

As we are now saying farewell to our beloved RBG, I hope we all will continue the good fight she worked so hard for.  So …

The world is dealing with an unprecedented health crisis caused by a new virus. With new insights in the way COVID19 spreads, in the way the virus behaves and in the way to deal with the pandemic every day, it is now more important than ever to safeguard the information we share is accurate and fact-based. We have to inoculate ourselves against the fake news and misinformation that infect our newsfeeds and timelines at this crucial moment by fact-checking.*

Apparently, not only America’s leaders are telling porkies about the success of their pandemic interventions and compare them to the model the Swedes adapted. Their antipodal counterparts do much the same except that where the American Presiden refers to the Swede’s Modus of Operandi as an example worth following, the Australian PM uses the Swedish numbers of victims and deaths caused by the pandemic to contrast it with how well Australia is doing.

IS SCOTT MORRISON CORRECT IN SAYING THE NUMBER OF COVID-19 DEATHS IN SWEDEN IS 20 TIMES THOSE IN AUSTRALIA?

Summer in Stockholm (Reuters: Stina Stjernkvist)

While Sweden often cited in debates over how best to balance health and economic considerations in response to the coronavirus, Prime Minister Scott Morrison doesn’t think Australia should be following that country’s model of lax restrictions.

When he spoke on Australian Sky News this week, the Prime Minister said June quarter GDP showed Australia’s economy had experienced one of the “lowest falls of any developed country”.

“Our economy fell by 7 per cent. Devastating, absolutely devastating. But compared to the rest of the world, it was one of the lowest falls of any developed country,” Mr Morrison said.

“And when you look at our health results, both on the case incidents in Australia of COVID and the upsetting number of deaths that we’ve had compared to overseas, I mean, I know a lot of people on your program talk about Sweden. Well, Sweden has had a bigger fall in their economy and they’ve had almost 20 times the number of deaths.”

Indeed, Sweden’s economy tumbled 8.3 per cent in the June quarter, compared with Australia’s drop of 7 per cent. However, Mr Morrison’s claim that Sweden has had almost 20 times the number of deaths is wide of the mark.

According to data compiled by US-based Johns Hopkins University, Australia had recorded 859 COVID-19 deaths (as of September 23), while Sweden had suffered 5,870 deaths. While Sweden’s death count is much higher than Australia’s, it is only seven times the number of deaths seen in Australia.

While Mr Morrison referred to the number of deaths when comparing the two nations, a comparison of the rate of deaths in both countries more closely aligns with his claim.

On those figures, Sweden’s rate of deaths per million people is 576.62 compared with Australia’s rate of 34.37. That means the Nordic nation has suffered a death rate more than 16 times that of Australia.

So Scott Morrison could have been closer to a less exaggerated truth, had he known the difference between the number of deaths and the rate of deaths.

FROM WASHINGTON, D.C.

**

As the debate rages across the US about the worth of mandatory mask-wearing, White House chief of staff Mark Meadows has come out strongly against a statement by the director of The Centers for Disease Control, Robert Redfield, who said that “face masks are the most important, powerful public health tool we have”.

Responding, Mr Meadows told reporters on September 17: “I will gladly wear my mask each and every day if that’s what makes the difference — and it doesn’t.”

“I think that even a Dr Redfield, Dr Fauci or anybody else would suggest that it is a mitigating effort, but it is not something that is designed to, to actually make sure that we don’t have the coronavirus spread.”

But fact-checkers at CNN’s Facts First found Mr Meadows’s claim that masks don’t make a difference to be false, and that both Dr Redfield and Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, had “touted the role of masks in preventing the spread of coronavirus”.

“Per the latest estimates from the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), universal mask usage would save 135,000 lives by January 1,” the fact-checkers noted.

They added that the CDC director had also said in July: “If we all wore face coverings for the next four, six, eight, 12 weeks, across the nation, this virus transmission would stop.”

** Even zombies wear masks.

A very busy day today
Meidas Touch managed to get in two – WRT McCain, no he was not “a war hero because he was captured.” He was a war hero because after being captured he was given a chance to return to the US on account of his father’s stature. He refused. He said he would go home if ALL the other POWs were allowed to do so also. Even in a Republican, I can respect that. They don’t make that kind any more.

Really American – the title is familiar and the facts are familiar, but it seems to be a new presentation.

RVAT also has two new ones, both with Olivia Troye –

Moving Forward – Sam’s tribute to RBG

Private Detention Centers I and II – As a person who has opposed private prisons for decades, I still have to say the problem here is more “detention centers” than it is “private.” And the root problem is our entire national philosophy of immigration in the first place. We don’t operate under the assumption that citizens are criminals until proven otherwise. Why should we operate under the assumption that immigrants and refugees are criminals until proven otherwise, when statistics show there are a lot fewer immigrant criminals than citizen criminals?

We Hate Surprises – The very first October Surprise was sprung by George H W on Jimmy Carter (LBJ was screwed treasonously by Nixon, but it wasn’t exactly a surprise.) Prior to that, presidential politics was dirty, but not THAT dirty. Now, we are stuck with it. And, of course, by “we” I mean Democrats. Only Republicans are evil enough to do “October surprises.”

We Got The Vote (Florida) – Rulings by Judge Amy Coney Barrett have been majorly instrumental in preventing the law from taking effect as intended. Nuff said.
