Everyday Erinyes #220

Experts in autocracies have pointed out that it is, unfortunately, easy to slip into normalizing the tyrant, hence it is important to hang on to outrage. These incidents which seem to call for the efforts of the Greek Furies (Erinyes) to come and deal with them will, I hope, help with that. As a reminder, though no one really knows how many there were supposed to be, the three names we have are Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone. These roughly translate as “unceasing,” “grudging,” and “vengeful destruction.”

I’m going to try to make this short today, since a lot is going on. Everyone who gets my weekly email is aware that I do my utmost to protect everyone’s privacy by using the “BCC” feature, so that no one who receives it can see anyone else’s email address except mine (just don’t “reply all,” please).

But, although I do try to clean up URLs before posting, I haven’t been quite as conscientious about that. Well, I will be from now on.

Here’s an example – please do not click on it or copy it in full, and I’ll explain why. It’s not even as cluttered as many URLs one sees, but it’s more cluttered than it needs to be.

https://www.metopera.org/season/on-demand/juneteenth?utm_source=OperaStreamsNewsletterW15&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=2021_MISC& utm_content=version_A

If this were in a newsletter sent to you, and you clicked on the link, that isn’t what you’d see at the page. Instead, you’d see something like this:

Only when you click in the address bar to select it in order to copy it does the other stuff appear, like this (except there isn’t room for it all):

Now let me quote from a user at Democratic Underground:

What’s all of the rest of that crap? It’s a lot of tracking info, info that lets God-knows-who discover all kinds of stuff, including things like who decided to share this link, and where that person originally found out about the linked article (from Facebook, from Twitter, from a particular friend, etc). While most of this info is in pretty cryptic, some of it is easier to guess at, like that somewhere along the line this link arrived via a newsletter.

Bingo. I got this link from a newsletter – specifically the “OperaStreamsNewsletter”. I can’t translate the rest, except that it does say I received it through email. I’m confident it identifies the exact newsletter it was in. I don’t see in this one that it identifies me personally, but I don’t see why I should be expected even to identify, for free, that, when you go there, you got the address from a newsletter sent to me. Plus, as I mentioned, this is a short string. I have seen some that are more than three times as long as this string.

None of that tracking info is needed, however, if all you really want to do is share the article and nothing else.

Since I’m a software engineer, fixing this sort of thing comes naturally to me. For others, it might not be so obvious.

A good rule of thumb: Look for the first “?” in the link. Most of the time you can throw away everything starting from that question mark onward.

TomCat taught me this technique some time ago, I don’t even remember how many years. But we never discussed why, other than for aesthetic reasons, the technique should virtually always be used. Now I know.

To make sure this works, paste your full link, copy just the first part of the link up to (but not including) the question mark, then paste the fragment you just copied into another browser tab or window. If that works, and takes you to the article you wanted to share with everyone, it’s safe to delete the tracking crap before you post.

Occasionally this technique does not work, which is why it’s important to check it, at least until you are familiar with how sites work that you use frequently. My experience is that 99.9% of the time it doesn’t work, it’s a link to a petition, and the shortened URL only takes you as far as the home page of the sponsoring group. In that case one pretty well has to use the whole thing. I’ve sometimes tried leaving part of the stuff after the “?” but I’ve never gotten one to work, let alone come up with a rule.  But then, unlike my co-member of Democratic Underground, I’m NOT a software engineer.

Incidentally, if I use (as I normally do) the link tool in the comment box (see above) to tie the link to a word or phrase, I will be especially careful to truncate the URL to the minimum needed. Because, although you can’t see it, if it’s there, the site can see all the tracking information – and you won’t know it. So I’ll be particularly careful to make sure that doesn’t happen.

After all that, here’s the actual link (shortened, I promise, and set to open in a new window). It is a little Juneteenth celebration of African American voices in opera. It features more black singers than there are clips, all but one of whom I know of, most of whom I have heard, several of whom I have seen, one in person. I think I would have added in Ryan Speedo Green, but if you want to know about him, you can look here.   (And this also touches on Denyse Graves. It really is a never-ending story.)

Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone, thank you for allowing me to use your space for something a little different – for Juneteenth – and please help all our readers to be understanding and patient with me too. And at least, everyone can use the technical information.

[P. S.  – Just in case – the Leontyne Price one links to two tracks.  This was her very last performance at the Met.  The first track is 10+ minutes, but the last 3 minutes are nothing but applause.  A very beloved lady.  After the applause, it goes into a duet with African American bass-baritone Simon Estes.]

The Furies and I will be back.

Short Takes:

From Washington Post: The city of Tulsa announced a last-minute curfew that began Thursday night and will continue Friday and Saturday, restricting people from a large area surrounding the arena where President Trump will hold his first campaign rally in months.

An executive order signed by Mayor G.T. Bynum (R) says the curfew, which begins at 10 p.m. and lifts at 6 a.m. all three nights, is intended to quell potential overnight violence as thousands intend to pour into the city to protest the president’s visit.

It’s unclear whether the Trump supporters who have camped out for days to secure a prime spot to see the president on Saturday will be cleared out as well, but some videos posted on social media appeared to show people leaving the area carrying tents and lawn chairs .

Bynum declared a “civil emergency” after law enforcement informed the mayor that “individuals from organized groups who have been involved in destructive and violent behavior in other states are planning to travel to the City of Tulsa for purposes of causing unrest in and around the rally,” the order reads.

We need to watch this very carefully. I would be very surprised, if there is no continuation of violent Republican racist false flag terrorist attacks designed to appear as the work of Blank Lives Matter and/or the non-existent Antifa.  RESIST!!

From YouTube (Washington Post Channel): For DACA recipients, a sense of relief after the Supreme Court’s decision

Roberts’ decision was not pro-DACA. It was very technical and narrow, almost inviting the Republican Reich to try again without the sloppy contradictions in motive that prompted this decision. Furthermore, he did not even mention the racist intent that should have protected DACA recipients from criminal Fuhrer Trump’s* order.  Let us hope that trying to steal the 2020 election will keep criminal Fuhrer Trump* too busy to try again.  RESIST!!

From The New Yorker: White House staffers are seething with envy after Dr. Anthony Fauci revealed that he has not spoken to Donald J. Trump in two weeks, envious staffers have confirmed.

News of the break in communication between the two men sent shockwaves through the White House, with scores of staffers demanding to know whether Fauci had a secret trick that they could employ to similar effect.

“Two freaking weeks?” Jared Kushner was overheard muttering. “I’d settle for one hour.”

Fauci said that there was no secret to getting Trump to stop talking to him, but suggested, “Generally speaking, if you pepper your sentences with facts, that’s usually enough to do it.”

Dang Andy! I spout facts as often as Republicans spout lies, but it doesn’t mute criminal Fuhrer Trump* on my TV. I’m mad at Fauci! How does he rate?  This just isn’t fair!  RESIST!!

It’s a tired day, here in the CatBox, as yesterday’s activity wore me out.  My Oncologist visit went very well.  I emailed a copy of my PET Scan results to a doctor, who shall remain Nameless.  I trust he can explain it better than I.  In short, all my tumors are smaller and considerably less intense than they were before treatment began.  They could not find my liver tumors to biopsy, but it turns out that there is enough material from the original biopsy of my esophageal tumor to analyze.  I misunderstood the treatment they want to do.  They will analyze the mutations of my cancer cells.  There are many mutagenic drugs that have been developed for cancer with different mutations, and if one of them matches mine, we can use it.  If not, it’s back to the drawing board.  My next appointment is on 7/7, and I’ll know then.  They also prescribed 12.5 mg Fentanyl patches for pain, which I should have by the weekend.  Happy Hump Day to all.

Short Takes:

From The New Yorker: One day after it issued decisions on L.G.B.T.Q. rights and the Second Amendment that provoked his ire, Donald J. Trump said that he would overrule the Supreme Court by creating a “Supremer Court.”

“Right now, if the Supreme Court makes a bad decision, quite frankly, you’re screwed,” he said. “The Supremer Court fixes that.”

Trump said that his Supremer Court would be a “beautiful, perfect court” that would make the Supreme Court “look like exactly what it is—a sad bunch of losers.”

Trump said that the Supremer Court would be housed in a “giant, gleaming building” overlooking the Supreme Court, enabling the Supremer Court Justices to “look down at those pathetic little Supreme Court jerks and laugh.”

Dang, Andy! Did you read Criminal Fuhrer Trump’s* mind? We know he would, if he could!  RESIST!!

From Daily Kos: Last week, the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals denied immunity to Martinsburg, WV police officers who shot a “secured” and “incapacitated” black man 22 times.

From the judicial opinion (which is well worth reading in its entirety).

In 2013, Wayne Jones, a black man experiencing homelessness, was stopped by law enforcement in Martinsburg, West Virginia for walking alongside, rather than on, the sidewalk. By the end of this encounter, Jones would be dead. Armed only with a knife tucked into his sleeve, he was tased four times, hit in the brachial plexus, kicked, and placed in a choke hold. In his final moments, he lay on the ground between a stone wall and a wall of five police officers, who collectively fired 22 bullets.

According to the Police Union and the Republican Reich, that was a sad case of suicide.  RESIST!!

Short Takes:

From The New Yorker: In his latest attack on the nation’s sixteenth President, Donald Trump boasted on Saturday that his television ratings were “much higher” than Abraham Lincoln’s.

“If you put my TV ratings side by side with Lincoln’s, there’s no comparison,” Trump told Fox News. “Honest Abe would want me to be honest about it, and, honestly, his ratings were terrible.”

Trump argued that Lincoln’s television ratings were especially poor “when you consider that he didn’t have to compete with Netflix and Amazon, like I have to.”

“Abraham Lincoln had zero competition and he still couldn’t get a decent number,” Trump said. “He might have been O.K. at some other things, but he was a total loser on TV.”

Theorizing about Lincoln’s poor ratings performance, Trump mused that “it might have been the beard.”

Short Takes:

From The New Yorker: In a series of angry tweets on Thursday, Donald J. Trump lashed out at the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Milley, declaring, “This is not the military I avoided serving in.”

Calling Milley’s apology for appearing in last week’s controversial church photo op “a disgrace,” Trump said, “The United States military of my youth was known for courage and valor, which is why I got a podiatrist’s note to get out of being a part of it.”

Recalling that episode from a half century ago, Trump said, “As I watched my podiatrist dictate that note, I thought about the great institution of the U.S. military, which I would be exempted from participating in. That institution is unrecognizable today.”

Andy, he’s lying again. The military certainly is still recognizable. It is the Republican Party of Lincoln, after transforming into the Republican Reich, that is not recognizable.  RESIST!!

From CNN: Attendees of President Donald Trump’s upcoming rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, must agree not to sue the campaign if they contract coronavirus.

Rallygoers are asked to RSVP to gain admission to the event and by registering, they must agree to a disclaimer that states they acknowledge the “inherent risk of exposure to COVID-19 exists in any public place where people are present.”

“By attending the Rally, you and any guests voluntarily assume all risks related to exposure to COVID-19 and agree not to hold Donald J. Trump for President, Inc.; BOK Center; ASM Global; or any of their affiliates, directors, officers, employees, agents, contractors, or volunteers liable for any illness or injury,” the disclaimer reads.

What hypocrisy! Criminal Fuhrer Trump* and the Republican Reich have been screaming since the beginning that danger from COVID-19, aka Trump* virus, is a hoax foisted on America by Democrats. Even more incredible, in spite of this, Republican Sheeple have such BAAA-A-A-A-A-AAD judgement that they will sign it without hesitation. What stupidity!  RESIST!!

From The New Yorker: Announcing that he was putting the nation on a “double-red threat level,” Donald J. Trump warned the American people on Tuesday to be on the lookout for terrorists posing as peaceful seventy-five-year-olds.

“One of these terrorists was already identified by the police in Buffalo,” Trump said. “They may be coming to your town next.”

Trump listed some “telltale signs of Antifa,” in order to help Americans identify septuagenarian terrorists in their midst.

“If the person appears to be seventy-five or older, with white hair and a peaceful demeanor, call the authorities immediately,” Trump said.

Dang, Andy! That’s straight news again!  RESIST!!

From Alternet: More than 1,250 former Department of Justice employees on Wednesday called on the department’s inspector general to open an investigation into reports that Attorney General William Barr personally ordered the tear-gassing of protesters in Washington, D.C. on June 1.

The former employees wrote that Inspector General Michael Horowitz must get to the bottom of Barr’s involvement in the dispersing of the crowd, which was part of the nationwide uprising against racial injustice following the killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor…

…The Washington Post reported last week that Barr directed law enforcement officers on the ground to deploy tear gas, rubber bullets, and stun grenades at protesters just before President Donald Trump walked through the park to get to a nearby church for a photo-op.

Barrf needs more than investigation. He needs a long prison term!  RESIST!!

It’s a tired day here in the CatBox.  Yesterday I had my PET Scan, and the test went well.  This time they bundled me very well with blankets, but I remembered the other thing I hate.  I’m a very itchy person and to have to lay still for over a half hour, itching in a dozen places I could not scratch was pure torture.  When we returned home, I ate lunch, took my shower, and got to bed for my nap quite late.  So I had supper late too, and by the time I crawled into bed for the night, it was completely dark.  I had a severe gas attack.  Lo and behold, it was so radioactive that it glowed in the dark.  The green cloud found a crack in the window frame, moved outside, and streamed off to the north.  That Sasquatch had better turn on her Geiger counter!  Happy Hump Day to all!

From The New Yorker: Furious at Mitt Romney for participating in a Black Lives Matter march, Donald J. Trump declared on Monday that the Utah senator is “not welcome in my bunker.”

“Mitt Romney thinks he’s cute, first voting to impeach me and now marching,” Trump told reporters. “Well, I’ve got news for Mitt: his invitation to my bunker is hereby revoked.”

Trump said that, because of his disloyalty, Romney “will never experience all that the best bunker in the world has to offer.”

“There are luxury recliners, televisions as far as the eye can see, and a bottomless pit of snacks,” Trump boasted. “If Mitt could see what he’s missing, I’ll bet he’d rethink some of the cute things he’s done.”

Dang, Andy! If Little Lord Willard keeps this up, he may even get a blessing from Seamus in dawg heaven!  RESIST!!

From Politico: But in a sign of how Trump’s reelection prospects have weakened across the country, even the heartland may be having second thoughts.

Since the start of the year, Democrats in Iowa have added about twice as many active voters to their rolls as Republicans, nudging ahead in total registration for the first time in years. The farm economy has been battered by the coronavirus pandemic. And though Trump still holds a small lead in the state, according to the RealClearPolitics polling average, he’s now airing TV advertisements there — a tacit acknowledgment that the campaign anticipates a contest.
