It’s a tired day, here in the CatBox, as yesterday completely wore me out.  I’ve avoided tatoos all my life, but now I have five.  They are small dots on my abdomen to serve as targeting guides.  I almost asked them to roll me over and put two eyes above my butt hole.  That would have given me a Trump* tattoo that acts just like the Fuhrer does!

Short Takes:

From Daily Kos: There is an op-ed in the Kansas City Star written by Joe Biden and Elizabeth Warren (www.kansascity.com/…) promising to use the power of the government to punish the blatant corruption that is obvious everywhere:

The Biden administration will appoint an inspector general to review every coronavirus relief transaction currently evading serious scrutiny. Wasteful, corrupt deals and giveaways will be rooted out and undone. Suspicious transactions will be referred to the Justice Department for investigation and prosecution. Every Trump administration official and business executive contemplating such deals should hear us loud and clear. Trump may wink and nod at this corruption. We will not.

Imagine what this means for Jared Kushner? Or everyone involved in the open piracy of stealing medical supplies from a state that paid for them (and arranged transportation)? Or all the companies selling our national stockpile for high profits?

When this unfortunate virus has stabilized, we need a national truth and reconciliation committee. And with real jail time!!

Wow! If they really follow through this time, unlike far too many past instances, we’ll need to build more prisons to hold those Republican corporate criminals.  RESIST!!

The world is dealing with an unprecedented health crisis caused by a new virus. With new insights in the way COVID19 spreads, in the way the virus behaves and in the way to deal with the pandemic every day, it is now more important than ever to safeguard the information we share is accurate and fact-based. We have to inoculate ourselves against the fake news and misinformation that infect our newsfeeds and timelines at this crucial moment by fact-checking.

For the duration of the pandemic, I will try to give you an overview of the main issues in CoronaCheck, an Australian email newsletter with the latest from around the world concerning the coronavirus.*

AUSTRALIA’S TRUMP AND HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE

Australian billionaire businessman and former federal MP Clive Palmer took out back-to-back full-page advertisements in the Murdoch press this week announcing that his foundation had purchased 32,900,000 doses of the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine and that he’s donating them towards Australia’s fight against COVID-19.

In his advertisements, Mr Palmer implied that there is a link between a decision taken by Health Minister Greg Hunt four weeks ago to make hydroxychloroquine available to doctors who are treating COVID-19 patients and Australia’s death rate since then from the virus. Mr Palmer claimed that it was the “lowest in the world” while acknowledging “the [infections] curve has flattened”. The Australian government, however, credited the low infection and death rates to basic hygiene measures.

Hydroxychloroquine received global attention after US President Donald Trump tweeted that it would be a “game-changer” in the fight against the coronavirus, based on small, preliminary trials in China and France, and maintained that the federal government had purchased and stockpiled 29 million pills of the drug. Since then Mr Trump’s attention has shifted first to internal cleansing with antiseptics and now to Remdesivir, an anti-viral drug, something Mr Palmer seems not to have caught up with.

As for hydroxychloroquine, Australian Medical Association federal vice-president Zappala said the published evidence remained “very mixed” and it was unclear whether the drug would be effective beyond its current approved limited use, which includes treatment of lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. In a recent US study, researchers essentially found a higher death rate in patients treated with hydroxychloroquine alone, while the drug also risked serious side effects, especially for people with pre-existing heart conditions.

Some background to Clive Palmer may make his actions a little clearer. Billionaire Palmer has iron ore, nickel and coal holdings;  by 2019 his estimated wealth had increased to A$4.09 billion. Besides mines, Mr Palmer owns real estate and several golf courses.

Mr Palmer created the Palmer United Party in April 2013, winning the Queensland seat of Fairfax in the 2013 Australian federal election and sitting as an MP for one term. During that term, he was the least-attending MP.

In 2009, he bought Queensland Nickel and the Palmer Nickel and Cobalt Refinery when it was about to be closed. In the first year after purchasing the refinery, Palmer gifted staff 50 Mercedes Benz cars and thousands of overseas holidays after the refinery turned a huge profit. On 18 January 2016, Queensland Nickel went bankrupt. Palmer refused to pay the entitlements of workers who lost their jobs, stating that “I have no personal responsibility, I retired from business over three years ago”. He also blamed the administrators for sacking the workforce. This forced the Federal Government to cover the workers’ entitlements.

In 2018 Clive Palmer tried to return to politics as a Senator in the Federal Parliament. He did not succeed but by pumping millions in campaign ads, he made sure the Labor Party lost its foothold in Queensland and the election. At the moment, Labor has a slim majority in Queensland’s State Parliament; in November new elections will be held in Queensland but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is unclear what form they are going to take. But one thing is clear: Clive Palmer has donated 32,900,000 doses of the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine to Australia…

WAR ON BILL GATES

Microsoft founder, philanthropist and world’s third-richest man Bill Gates has the subject of a overwhelming volume of misinformation related to COVID-19. It started in January with claims the Gates Foundation had predicted 65 million deaths in a pandemic simulation (it didn’t) and have been followed with claims that a Gates Foundation-funded vaccine paralysed nearly 500,000 children (also false) and that Mr Gates is being sued by India (wrong again).

In another example, a Facebook post claimed Mr Gates was freely able to prescribe drugs. However, given Mr Gates is not a medical doctor, the claim was rated false by fact-checkers at Lead Stories. Mr Gates is also not trying to “microchip” the world’s population through a coronavirus vaccine, nor is he using invisible tattoos and monitoring bracelets to track Americans.

And the Gates Foundation, despite helping the vaccine search with up to $250 million in funding, doesn’t hold a patent for such a jab.

FACEBOOK PRACTICES ARE STILL LACKING

In the same week that Mark Zuckerberg boasted that his company had “taken down hundreds of thousands of pieces of misinformation related to COVID-19”, reporters at The Markup were allowed to place ads on both Facebook and Instagram targeting an ad category of 78 million users who were deemed interested in pseudoscience, “advantage of this sort of vulnerability that a person has once they’re going down these rabbit holes, both to pull them further down and to monetise that”, according to Kate Starbird, a professor at the University of Washington.

Facebook has since removed the pseudoscience category from its ad manager.

NewsGuard, an online trust tool, also found Facebook’s misinformation-fighting practices to below par, identifying 31 Facebook pages, with an audience of 21 million people, as “super-spreaders” of coronavirus misinformation spreading “blatant misinformation”, even where there was evidence of coordinated inauthentic behaviour, which violates Facebook’s policies.

FROM AMERICA, STILL

Trump supporters have taken to social media to defend his musings that “powerful light” and disinfectant could be used to kill the novel coronavirus inside human bodies.

One such Facebook post claims that Mr Trump was referring to “Ultraviolet Radiation” administered into the body when he talked of internal disinfectant. “Just because it’s called a ‘disinfectant’ doesn’t mean it’s Pine-Sol,” it claimed. “Ultraviolet Radiation” is a method that kills bacteria and has been “used for a while now”, according to the post.

PolitiFact found that while the post may be referring to a treatment called “ultraviolet blood irradiation”, used mainly in the alternative-medicine community, there was no evidence such treatments could kill viruses or bacteria.

FROM WASHINGTON, D.C.

According to Politico, a report by the US State Department warned that Russia, China and Iran were using the coronavirus pandemic to launch a “disinformation onslaught” against the US by echoing one another.

Messages spread by the three include that the coronavirus is an American bioweapon, that the Chinese response to the virus was superior to that of the US, and that the US economy wouldn’t be able to handle the crisis, and they were pushed by state-run media outlets, as well as governments themselves. In one example, a website run by the Russian Defence Ministry is said to have promoted a conspiracy theory that Bill Gates had a hand in creating the virus.

The State Department reported the coronavirus pandemic had accelerated the convergence of disinformation narratives.

From The New Yorker: Vice-President Mike Pence has started wearing a mask after Anthony Fauci told him that it will protect him from women, Fauci has confirmed.

After seeing video of a maskless Pence touring the Mayo Clinic, on Tuesday, Fauci said, “I knew I had to come up with something fast” to get through to Pence.

Fauci immediately got on the phone with the Vice-President and informed him that “clinical research” had demonstrated that a mask is “an effective female-repellent.”

I believe you, Andy. That brown-nose sycophant, Pence, would love ensure that the use of his butt is reserved exclusively for his beloved criminal Fuhrer Trump*.  RESIST!!

From Alternet: Countless non-fundamentalist churches in the United States, from Catholic to Lutheran and Episcopalian, have embraced social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic and temporarily moved their activities online. But many Christian fundamentalists and evangelicals have been irresponsibly downplaying the dangers of COVID-19 and doing so with deadly results: journalist Alex Woodward, in the U.K.-based Independent, reports that the pandemic has claimed the lives of more than 30 pastors in the Bible Belt.

“Dozens of pastors across the Bible Belt have succumbed to coronavirus after churches and televangelists played down the pandemic and actively encouraged churchgoers to flout self-distancing guidelines,” Woodward reports.

To Inject or Not to Inject?

Criminal Fuhrer Trump* and the Republican Reich never cease to amaze me.  Every time I think they have exceeded bounds of human credulity, they take another asymptotic step toward infinity.

0424Lysol

After a presentation Thursday that touched on the disinfectants that can kill the novel coronavirus on surfaces and in the air, President Trump pondered whether those chemicals could be used to fight the virus inside the human body.

“I see the disinfectant that knocks it out in a minute, one minute,” Trump said during Thursday’s coronavirus press briefing. “And is there a way we can do something like that by injection inside, or almost a cleaning? Because you see it gets inside the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs, so it would be interesting to check that.”

The question, which Trump offered unprompted, immediately spurred doctors, lawmakers and the makers of Lysol to respond with incredulity and warnings against injecting or otherwise ingesting disinfectants, which are highly toxic.

“My concern is that people will die. People will think this is a good idea,” Craig Spencer, director of global health in emergency medicine at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center, told The Washington Post. “This is not willy-nilly, off-the-cuff, maybe-this-will-work advice. This is dangerous.”… [emphasis added]

The Fuhrer’s Vengeance

Government employees need to beware, and the more they care about doing their jobs, the more they need to watch out.  That’s because anyone that says or does anything that criminal Fuhrer Trump* doesn’t like is a sure target for the Fuhrer’s vengeance.  Here are two examples.

0404TR

Sailors aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier cheered for Capt. Brett Crozier as he disembarked the ship for the last time, an overwhelming show of support for their leader who was relieved of his command after issuing a stark warning about a coronavirus outbreak onboard.

New video obtained by CNN shows a large crowd gathered to give Crozier a warm and loud send off, clapping and chanting his name as he left the ship. It was a clear expression of appreciation for their former commander who was removed for what the acting Navy Secretary called “poor judgment.”

“Today at my direction the commanding officer of the USS Theodore Roosevelt, Captain Brett Crozier, was relieved of command by carrier strike group commander Rear Admiral Stewart Baker,” acting Secretary of the Navy Thomas Modly announced on Thursday.

The decision came days after Crozier wrote a memo warning Navy leadership that decisive action was needed to save the lives of the ship’s crew. “We are not at war. Sailors do not need to die. If we do not act now, we are failing to properly take care of our most trusted asset — our Sailors,” it read, three US defense officials confirmed to CNN…

Donald Trump has fired the inspector general for the intelligence community who handled the whistleblower complaint that led to his impeachment, prompting fierce criticism from Democrats.

The US president chose a Friday night, with America consumed by the coronavirus pandemic, to tell the House of Representatives and Senate intelligence committees of his decision to dismiss Michael Atkinson.

In a letter, Trump claimed it was “vital” that he had confidence in the appointees serving as inspectors general, and “that is no longer the case with regard to this inspector general”.

The president would nominate an individual who has his full confidence at a later date, he added.

There was swift condemnation from Democrats. Chuck Schumer, the minority leader in the Senate, said: “President Trump fires people for telling the truth…  [emphasis added]

Democrats and Independents trash criminal Fuhrer Trump* on a regular basis.  It’s a completely natural thing to do.  Trashing Trump is as obvious as peeing in a toilet.  Republicans, on the other hand tend to fall between brainwashed and braindead, so they tend to love their criminal Fuhrer Trump* to the point of their own destruction.  So I was very surprised to discover that even some Republicans are trashing their Fuhrer.

Republicans for the Rule of Law, a group of anti-Trump conservatives who backed the president’s impeachment, has released a brutal new ad that features longtime Republican voters hammering Trump’s leadership on the coronavirus pandemic.

The ad features Republican voters from all across the United States taking turns reading from a script describing their disillusionment with the president’s actions during the pandemic…  [emphasis added]

From Crooks and Liars: Welcome to the COVID-19 Games, where the tributes are governors fighting for the scraps of critical protective gear still available, and where success still depends on kissing Trump’s ass.

Last week Trump was playing quid pro quo with Americans lives, telling governors “it’s a two-way street. They have to treat us well.” The result of not doing so is not getting help. Take New York, which requested 30,000 ventilators and got 4,400. And is being outbid by FEMA on the private market, where the state has been trying to procure more. “What sense does this make?” Gov. Andrew Cuomo told reporters Tuesday. “The federal government, FEMA, should have been the purchasing agent. Buy everything, and then allocate it by need to the states.” Wisconsin’s Democratic Gov. Tony Evers asked for 190,000 nonsurgical masks from FEMA last week, and has struggled to find ventilators. He has no idea where the masks are.

On the other hand, Oklahoma asked for 16,000 face shields and got 120,000. It had received about 84,000 N95 masks by the end of last week, “more than twice its original request.” Then there’s Florida, which is expecting its third shipment from the feds. It got 100% of what Trump’s good buddy Gov. Ron DeSantis asked for in the first two shipments. Kentucky has gotten more than it requested. Illinois, Massachusetts, and Maine have only gotten part of what they’ve requested. (There you go, Sen. Susan Collins, more lessons learned for you.)

From The New Yorker: Donald J. Trump should use this time when he is staying at home to repeat first grade, the nation’s teachers are urging.

Carol Foyler, the executive director of the National Alliance of Elementary Educators, said that the homebound Trump has a “golden opportunity” to use remote learning to repeat the first-grade curriculum.

“At a time when many of our nation’s children are being homeschooled, this seems like the perfect time for President Trump to learn the basics of reading, writing, and math,” she said. “By June, he could be reading ‘Hop on Pop’ and ‘Go, Dog, Go!’ ”

From Alternet: Georgia Sen. Kelly Loeffler’s financial disclosures from late February and early March are simply fascinating. We already knew that Loeffler sold off a lot of stock in early February, while buying stock in a company positioned to do well during coronavirus shutdowns because it provides online meetings. But the hugely wealthy senator’s money moves didn’t stop there.

Loeffler sold off $18.7 million in shares of Intercontinental Exchange, the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange. Loeffler’s husband, Jeff Sprecher, is the CEO of the company and she used to be an executive there. Loeffler and Sprecher also sold shares of retail stores including Lululemon and T.J. Maxx, while making another really interesting investment. This time, they bought shares of a company that makes protective gear being used in hospitals fighting COVID-19.
