Yesterday’s trip to the eye surgeon’s office came off without a hitch.  Lori said the eye point is unchanged, increasing the odds of a successful corrective surgery in December.  I slept very poorly last night so I am tired today.  Pray for those harmed by the Republican domestic terrorist in Pittsburgh.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 3:35 (average 5:01).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From YouTube (MSNBC Chunnel): Trump Era Unique For Violent Extremists Inspired By US President | Rachel Maddow (28 min.)

Rachel did a superior job of linking Trump’s mouth to the MAGA Maniac and a bevy of other violent Republican terrorists. RESIST!! VOTE BLUE!!

From YouTube (Parody Project Channel): VOTE THE BASTARDS OUT – The Spooky Mens Chorale

In a word, Amen. RESIST!! VOTE BLUE!!

From The New Yorker: Moments after law enforcement apprehended the pipe-bombing suspect, Cesar Sayoc, in Florida, White House staffers scrambled to make sure that Donald J. Trump had never retweeted anything from Sayoc’s demented Twitter feed.

The alarm bells went off at the White House after the chief of staff, John Kelly, reviewed Sayoc’s feed, which is riddled with right-wing conspiracy theories and paranoid attacks on George Soros, and thought that some of the tweets “looked kind of familiar,” an aide to Kelly confirmed.

After spotting the similarities, Kelly enlisted Kellyanne Conway, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, and Jared Kushner to comb through Trump’s Twitter feed and ascertain whether he had in fact retweeted any of the bombing suspect’s unhinged ravings.

As of late Friday afternoon, the team of staffers had not yet identified any retweets of the alleged pipe bomber by Trump, but cautioned that their work was “far from over,” a White House source said.

Dang, Andy! I think they’ll find dozens. RESIST!! VOTE BLUE!!

Everyday Erinyes #141

Posted by at 10:50 am  Politics

Experts in autocracies have pointed out that it is, unfortunately, easy to slip into normalizing the tyrant, hence it is important to hang on to outrage. These incidents which seem to call for the efforts of the Greek Furies (Erinyes) to come and deal with them will, I hope, help with that. As a reminder, though no one really knows how many there were supposed to be, the three names we have are Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone. These roughly translate as “unceasing,” “grudging,” and “vengeful destruction.”

As the 2018 election approaches, I find myself getting more and more bipolar (not clinically, just as a figure of speech). Stunning debate results, like those of Stacy Abrams, lift me up, while other headlines, such as the one about the 340,134 voters purged by Brian Kemp, drag me down.

Blessed as I am to live in what the Washington Post calls “the safest place to cast a ballot” (apparently even safer than Oregon), I can hardly comprehend what people who live in other places are going through. With all mail balloting (with paper ballots providing a trail to validate the results), I have already voted, and my vote will be counted, and I have that confirmed in writing from the Secretary of State. But not everyone has these luxuries.

Fortunately, there are people who are knowledgeable doing their best to provide resources for voters, and for campaigns and volunteers assisting voters, to maximize the effective turnouut in this election. I say “the effective turnout,” by which I mean that there are, unfortunately, other people trying to minimize the turnout, and especially the Democratic turnout; and they are putting up hurdles to voting which potential voters need to know about in order to be sure their votes are counted.

One of these people is Steven Rosenfeld, a senior writing fellow of the Independent Media Institute. He has written “A Voter’s Guide to the 2018 Election” – not one of those that has analyzed the issues and candidates, but one that is concerned with the mechanics of getting registered, getting a ballot, and getting in counted, and what to do if you run into pushback.

There is way too much good advice to quote in full, and much of it is state specific. AlterNet has excerpted from the full “Voter’s Guide” information on states which require Voter ID, perhaps the right’s favorite method of vote suppression, though it is in competition with purging registrations.

Do you have the voter ID that is required in your state? If you cannot get time off from work to get that ID, or the paperwork costs associated with doing so are prohibitive, there are groups like VoteRiders and SpreadTheVote to help you get it done—or tell you what household bills you can bring to a polling place that will be accepted as ID if you’re a registered voter. In general, stricter voter ID laws affect non-whites much more than whites, and confusion surrounding ID has led people to skip voting. (emphasis mine)

These states in particular have quirks in their laws or in their processes, so it would behoove anyone living (or advising voters) in those states to be sure one’s knowledge is up-to date:

Arizona
Georgia
Missouri
Texas
North Dakota
Arkansas

Voters in other states should be paying attention to any litigation their states might be involved with, being mindful that very late-breaking decisions may not be fully communicated or explained to election workers.

In other states, like Kansas, voters in some localities need to be mindful of more deliberate institutional barriers. For example, in Dodge City, where Latinos make up 60 percent of its population of 27,000 residents, the only polling place is a mile outside of the city limits and not near public transportation. In that state, like Georgia, the Republican candidate for governor is the state’s top election official in a very tight race.

Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone, I suggest deploying every available harpy to election sites in all states as soon as early voting starts, which in most states that have it, is now (or yesterday).

But, on an unrelated topic, there is one incident this week so egregious is just demands mention, even though you may have already heard of it. (Hat tip to Nameless for this source, the most detailed.)

We often read stories of people who leave animals stranded on a busy highway – or animals who get themselves stranded on a busy highway, for some reason, like the skunk who got his head stuck in a plastic cup, effectively blinding him. But GLUING an animal to a busy highway just takes it to an entirely new level.

“Sticky” (yes, she was saved and adopted and named, thank Ceiling Cat) is between 5 and 8 weeks old, and weighs 1.3 pounds (or did when rescued.) Hero Chuck Hawley, during his morning commute, saw what he thought was just a box in the road, but a trick of the headlights revealed it was a kitten. He immediately stopped to try to rescue her – she didn’t move – he discovered why when he tried to pick her up and realized she was glued to the pavement.

Well, he picked her up, glue and all. It took his efforts and veterinary efforts to get the stuff off (and lots of mineral oil). When it was all off, she was discovered to have three small round puncture wounds on her neck, of (still) unknown origin.

Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone, she’s safe and warm now, with human parents, and two human and two dog siblings to love. But I want the criminal found (here’s a petition we can sign to hopefully get you human assistance with that), and I want him or her dealt with in such a way that he or she never hurts anyone else again. How to accomplish that will become clearer when we know who it is, of course.

The Furies and I will be back.

This “Friday Fun” is going to be a little different than other ones I’ve done.  I’m going to get up on my Soapbox and rant a little bit – so bear with me.

One of my pet peeves that really irritates me is that common ploy among pundits referred to as “Both-Siderism”.  You know – the idea that BOTH sides are guilty of something when in our hearts we know that’s not true.

But we see it in full-bloom these days surrounding the issues of violence and civility.  Pundits keep telling us that Democrats are just as guilty as Rethuglicans.

Being reality-oriented and interested in facts, I decided to actually do some research to see if it were true.

Well, it turns out those pundits were absolutely correct – and I can prove it!

Remember when Pres. Obama called Mexicans coming across our border “Rapists” and “Drug Dealers”?

Or when he called tiki-torch waving white supremacists, who held a rally for ethnic cleansing and drove a car into a crowd of protestors killing one of them, some “Very fine people”?

And do you recall when Vice-President Biden’s PAC put out an ad with gunsight crosshairs on Congressional Districts Democrats were “aiming for” – and then a representative from one of those Districts in Arizona was shot in the head?

Or how about when Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT) took offense at what a reporter asked him, so he picked him up and body-slammed him to the ground – and then Pres. Obama praised him for it and called him “My kinda guy”?

Remember the time Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) promised to pay for the legal defense of one her supporters at a raucous rally when she told him to “Beat the crap out of” a protestor?

And how about when Pres. Obama met with Putin and defended Putin’s hacking in an effort to influence the outcome of our elections – and it worked?  Or when he literally said he “Fell in love” with the despicable despot Kim Jong Un because of the letters they exchanged as “pen pals”?

And then there’s Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) who decided to start calling her colleagues offensive, demeaning, racist and misogynist names.

What about when Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) got caught admitting to sexual assault when he said he could grab women by their genitals?

So, do you remember all those times Democrats behaved this way and said those things, thus documenting that, in truth, “Both Sides Do It”?

Yeah … me neither!

For the record, let’s take a look at just a sampling of the times Twitler has literally encouraged violence – courtesy of no less a reputable source than Snopes!

Trump

“I’d like to punch him in the face”

“Maybe he should have been roughed up”

“Part of the problem is no one wants to hurt each other anymore”

“I don’t know if I’ll do the fighting myself or if other people will”

“The audience hit back. That’s what we need a little bit more of”

“If you do (hurt him), I’ll defend you in court, don’t worry about it”

“I’ll beat the crap out of you”

“Knock the crap out of him, would you? I promise you, I will pay your legal fees”

 Sarah Huckabee Sanders:

“The president in no way, form, or fashion has ever promoted or encouraged violence.”

SNOPES – TRUMP INCITES VIOLENCE

But since it’s Halloween Time – I think I should end on a happier note.

So here’s a site with an interactive map that you can use to find out what the favorite Halloween candy is in your state:

Short Take:

From The New Yorker: Russian and Chinese spies who have been eavesdropping on Donald J. Trump’s unsecured iPhone calls complained on Thursday that he has foiled their efforts by speaking in a language that is infuriatingly indecipherable.

According to the spies, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, what they had hoped would be a treasure trove of valuable intercepts has amounted to little more than unintelligible gibberish.

“Trump has been communicating in an impenetrable code entirely of his own creation,” a Chinese spy said. “These phone calls might as well be triple-encrypted.”

A Russian spy who has monitored Trump’s calls around the clock said that the only words that could be identified clearly were “I” and “me,” but that they were used so frequently that they became virtually meaningless.

Dang Andy! I hope the Russians and Chinese spend a fortune trying to decipher RepublIdiot T. RESIST!! VOTE BLUE!!

It’s that time of week again, so here are three excellent video clips from Sam’s show last night.  Enjoy!

Asylum Seekers Aren’t Scary

Sam is right. Republican terrorists are far scarier than refugees.

Trans Rights Under Attack

This disgusting discrimination is easier to understand from Trump, whose gender identity is neuter.

The Rainbow Wave Is Coming

In my opinion, the people making the calls, knocking on the doors, and doing the dirty work ARE the heroes.

Sam always gets the truth out, without sacrificing humor.

It’s a very busy day here in the CatBox.  I’m getting prepared for tomorrow.  I have my preliminary eye-exam for the surgery to correct my double double vision vision, scheduled for 12/12.  I leave at 8:00 AM, and will return after 1:00 PM.  I will be fully dilated, so I’ll be blind and useless for the rest of the day.  Therefore, please expect no more than a Personal Update, and I will not be sending links messages on Care2.  I should be back in the saddle on Saturday.

From Alternet: NBC has decided it’s had enough of Megyn Kelly for one week.

The New York Times’ John Koblin reports that NBC will air reruns of Kelly’s show over the next two days while the network continues to deal with the blowback caused by Kelly questioning why it’s considered racist for white people to dress in blackface during Halloween.

“Given the circumstances, Megyn Kelly Today will be on tape the rest of the week,” NBC said in a statement to Koblin.

Temporary good riddance. When MSNBC hired this Faux Noise bikini model, I said it was a mistake. They need to fire her permanently.  RESIST!! VOTE BLUE!!

Stacey Abrams Reamed Brian Kemp

Posted by at 12:52 pm  Politics

Last night there was a showdown between  the Democratic Candidate for the Georgia statehouse, Stacey Abrams, and her opponent, Republican expert at election theft through illegal voter suppression, Brian Kemp.  In my opinion, Stacey bent him over and gave him a Saguaro cactus suppository.  But don’t take my word for it.  See it yourself.

1024debate

Charges of voter suppression and counterclaims of encouraging illegal voting dominated the first debate between Democrat Stacey Abrams and Republican Brian Kemp in the race for Georgia governor.

Disputes over voting access took center stage at Tuesday evening’s debate, highlighting Abrams’ historic bid to become the first black female governor in American history and the long-simmering politics of race in the Deep South. Kemp, who is white, continued to fend off charges that he’s using his position as Georgia secretary of state to make it harder for minority voters to cast ballots.

Libertarian candidate Ted Metz also participated in the debate.

Abrams said Kemp’s record as secretary of state "causes great concern" and pointed to the release of voter data under Kemp’s watch and the state’s "exact match" voter registration system, which has left tens of thousands of voter registrations "pending" due to inconsistencies.

The Democrat said she takes voting rights "very seriously" and said her own father had once been arrested trying to help people get registered…. [emphasis added]

Inserted from <The Herald Dispatch>

Here’s complete video. It is interrupted by fire alarm early.  Just nudge it ahead.

Did she dominate, or what?

FYI, in the event of a recount, Kemp has stated that he will not recuse himself.

From YouTube (Media Matters Channel): Right-wing media’s history of smearing coverage for pre-existing conditions as “a luxury,” “welfare”

Barf Bag Alert!!

This has been the Republican position on pre-existing conditions for as long as I can remember. Now, two weeks away from the midterms, Trump and the Republicans that are still fighting to take away that coverage that Democrats gave people, are claiming they will cover preexisting conditions and Democrats won’t. How do you spell B-U-L-L-S-H-I-T? RESIST!! VOTE BLUE!!

From The New Yorker: The Saudi crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, “totally freaked out” after Rudolph Giuliani offered to appear on television and explain “what really happened” inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Giuliani has confirmed.

Giuliani told reporters on Tuesday that he phoned the crown prince to make “an extremely attractive offer of my services.”
