It’s my last full day here in the crappy old CatBox.  I’d hoped that the move would go smoothly, but CCC could ruin a wet dream.  The movers were supposed to be here first thing in the morning.  That has now changed to “sometime in the afternoon”.  ARGH!  I will be SO glad when this mess is over.  Tomorrow I will post a brief personal update early and go back to bed to rest until late morning.  I hope to post another brief personal update, on Friday afternoon, assuming that my cable install is smooth.

From YouTube (Robert Reich Channel): Robert Reich: Where Your Tax Dollars Really Go

The Reich on the left, Robert Reich, is right. Every penny we spend on meeting Americans’ needs is a penny that the greedy Reich on the right, the Republican Reich, can’t give to a billionaire. RESIST!!

From The New Yorker: Pushing back against charges that Senator Mitch McConnell is a Russian asset, the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, said on Tuesday that McConnell “has never been an asset to any country.”

“You can scour the four corners of the globe, and you will not find a nation that would ever in a million years consider Mitch McConnell an asset,” Putin said.

The Russian President urged pundits who have called McConnell a Russian asset “to look up the word ‘asset’ in the dictionary.”

“You will find that ‘asset’ means a useful or valuable thing,” Putin said. “The only part of that definition that fits McConnell is ‘thing.’ ”

Dang, Andy! Putin [R-RU] does have a point, but McConnell sure is trying hard to help Russia. Do you think Putin has a pee-pee tape starring Bought Bitch Moscow Mitch? RESIST!!

Here is the one hundred sixty-third article in our Republicans on Parade series, featuring individuals who personify what the Republican Party has become. Today’s winner is Republican white Supremacist Santino William Legan. He is so honored for murdering two Latino children and a Black man for his Fuhrer.

0730gilroyAn Instagram post connected to the 19-year-old who killed three people at a food festival in Northern California points to literature that is part of an ecosystem of white nationalist literature, according to extremism researchers.

On Sunday, police officers shot and killed Santino William Legan at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in Gilroy, California, after he opened fire at the event. Earlier the same day, a post appeared on an Instagram page attributed to him referring to a proto-fascist white supremacist manifesto by a pseudonymous 19th-century author.

NBC News has declined to identify the literature by name in order to limit its spread.

According to extremism researchers, the manifesto is part of a collection of white nationalist literature that’s been pirated and distributed for free on far-right websites. The material is part of a yearslong recruiting technique by white nationalists to target those vulnerable to their message on forums frequently populated by teenagers.

The book strongly advocates combat, violence and death along racial lines, and is filled with anti-Semitic rhetoric. It is a staple among neo-Nazis and white supremacists on extremist sites such as 4chan’s /pol/ board, National Vanguard, Stormfront and The Daily Stormer. Links to the PDF version of the book have been posted hundreds of times on 4chan in the last several years, including as recently as last month… [emphasis added]

Here’s a brief video linking this Republican to the shooting and the Might is Right manifesto.

The greatest terrorist threat in this nation is not Muslims.  It is not Latino gangs.  It is the Republican Reich for continuing to inculcate hatred in Republican Nazis like this one.

It’s a muggy day here in the crappy old CatBox.  I assume that the Cat Scan showed nothing bad.  It was an unpleasant experience, because I had to guzzle over a liter of cat pee, and when it was over they lied to me.  They said there is no cat.  Who should I think did the Cat Scan a dawg?!!? Dawgs are for eating, not scanning!  I should be in the saddle today and tomorrow.  Thursday is moving Day. I’ll post a minimal Personal Update early in the Morning and, if my Friday morning cable installation is smooth, another on Friday PM.  I’ll be back on the weekend.

From Think Progress: Imagine the utter contempt that Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) must hold for the American people.

“Again and again, Democrats have refused to join Republicans in guaranteeing coverage for pre-existing conditions,” Cornyn tweeted Monday morning. The tweet was in response to Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) stating it had been two years since Senate Democrats blocked President Donald Trump from repealing critical health care rules…

…In 2010, President Barack Obama signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act — a law that, among other things, ensured that insurance companies can no longer discriminate against people with preexisting conditions.

Every single Senate Democrat voted for these protections for people with preexisting conditions. Every single Senate Republican opposed these protections.

Cornhole Cornyn is doing what Republicans do best: lie. RESIST!!

Short Take:

From The New Yorker: A government-subsidized housing structure has fallen into a dangerous state and has become thoroughly infested with criminals and rats, a leading congressman warned on Saturday.

The building has become “the territory of vicious gangsters who roam freely and consider themselves above the law,” Representative Elijah Cummings, a Democrat of Maryland, said.

The congressman added that notorious gang members took over the housing facility in early 2017 and have “spread terror and despair” there ever since.

“People are scared to be there,” Cummings said. “Hundreds have fled.”

Amen Andy. 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. is in dire need of extermination. RESIST!!

Probe to Impeach Peach Pervert

I’m not sure if Rep. Jerry Nadler’s [D-NY] tactic will work, but if it does, it’s a stroke of genius.  This is not a formal impeachment inquiry.  They are investigating whether or not to open a formal impeachment inquiry.  To the best of my knowledge, Speaker Pelosi [D-CA] has not softened her opposition to impeachment.

0727impeach

The House Judiciary Committee on Friday asked a federal judge to unseal grand jury secrets related to Robert S. Mueller III’s investigation, using the court filing to declare that lawmakers have already in effect launched an impeachment investigation of President Trump.

In a legal maneuver that carries significant political overtones, the committee told a judge that it needs access to the grand jury evidence collected by Mr. Mueller as special counsel — such as witness testimony — because it is “investigating whether to recommend articles of impeachment” against the president.

“Because Department of Justice policies will not allow prosecution of a sitting president, the United States House of Representatives is the only institution of the federal government that can now hold President Trump accountable for these actions,” the filing told the judge, Beryl A. Howell, who supervised Mr. Mueller’s grand jury.

Referring to the part of the Constitution that gives Congress the power to impeach and remove a president, the filing continued: “To do so, the House must have access to all the relevant facts and consider whether to exercise all its full Article I powers, including a constitutional power of the utmost gravity — approval of articles of impeachment.”

[Read the Judiciary Committee’s application.]

With the filing, the committee’s chairman, Representative Jerrold Nadler of New York, was attempting to sidestep the debate raging inside the Democratic Party over whether the full House should hold a vote to formally declare that it is opening an impeachment inquiry. By declaring that his committee was in effect conducting such an inquiry, he was heading off a politically difficult vote in the committee or the full house to pursue impeachment…  [emphasis added]

Context Of President Donald Trump Impeachment Improves Democrats’ Legal Case

Assuming that the judge grants Nadler’s request, I’m certain that Barrf will appeal, but at least the appeal will happen while Congress is on their summer recess.

If it goes to SCROTUS (Republican Anti-Constitutional VD), all bets are off.  At SCROTUS the Constitution takes a back seat to goose stepping with their Fuhrer.

Although an ongoing impeachment investigation is most beneficial,  I still think that passing actual articles of impeachment for Senate trial is a bad idea.  There is no chance to convict.  Also, cast not thy pearls before swine (see below).

I slept poorly last night here in the crappy old CatBox because of the extreme humidity (now 85%).  I feel very tired.  Please expect no more than a Personal Update with no links messages on Care2 both Tomorrow and Monday.  Tomorrow is a WWWendy day, and after de-stinking the smelly TomCat, we start packing.  Monday is my annual Cat Scan with contrast to ascertain that the eye-cancer I suffered did not metastasize.  It doubles as a COPD check.  I expect another clean bill of health, but I’ll be very pissed off, if I don’t get to play with the cat doing the scan.

From YouTube (MSNBC Channel): Detained American Teen Speaks About His Ordeal

This example of Republican Latino-hatred is horrific. RESIST!!

From Slate: There were likely big celebrations at the White House Friday night as the Supreme Court gave the green light for the Trump administration to use $2.5 billion in Pentagon funds to build parts of the wall along the Mexican border. In a 5-4 ruling, the court’s conservative justices overturned a lower court decision and said the administration could begin using the money while the case proceeds.

Even though the ruling was only one paragraph long, the conservative justices hinted pretty clearly they would likely side with the administration in the future by saying that those challenging the White House use of the funds didn’t seem to have a right to do so. On the opposite end, three of the four more liberal justices on the court—Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sonia Sotomayor, and Elena Kagan—said they would have blocked the funds for now. Justice Stephen Breyer, meanwhile, said he would have allowed preparatory work but not actual construction that would be difficult to undo if the White House lost the case further down the line.

SCROTUS (Republican Anti-Constitutional VD) strikes again! They are allowing the Fuhrer to steal benefits, equipment, and training that our troops need and deserve to waste money on the bogus Republican wall. RESIST!!

From Daily Kos:

Republicans are really drawing the best people these days. For example, take Daniella Stella, the Trump-loving Minnesota woman who is trying to unseat Rep. Ilhan Omar in Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District. She has fully embraced the ridiculously absurd Qanon conspiracy theories (read more about that below.)

But, it turns out the congressional hopeful also has a criminal history. The Guardian has the goods:

Stella is accused of stealing 279 items valued at $2,327.97 from a Target store in Edina, to the south-west of Minneapolis, on 8 January this year. She was arrested for the alleged theft after security staff called the police.

A criminal complaint filed to Hennepin county district court alleged Stella was seen leaving the store without paying for most of her haul, after “scanning only a few other items” that were valued at about $50.

$2,327.97 from a Target? That’s a lot of stolen stuff. It’s hard to imagine executives or employees of Minneapolis-based Target Stores supporting her election campaign.

The Target theft wasn’t her first time getting busted for shoplifting.

What do I think? I think the prospect of being in the House had her salivating with GOP greed. RESIST!!

Everyday Erinyes #176

Posted by at 7:42 am  Politics
Jul 272019

Experts in autocracies have pointed out that it is, unfortunately, easy to slip into normalizing the tyrant, hence it is important to hang on to outrage. These incidents which seem to call for the efforts of the Greek Furies (Erinyes) to come and deal with them will, I hope, help with that. As a reminder, though no one really knows how many there were supposed to be, the three names we have are Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone. These roughly translate as “unceasing,” “grudging,” and “vengeful destruction.”

I’ve written about Jeffrey Sterling before, back in 2016, along with other whistleblowers. I had planned this for last week, but it’s really more appropriate for today, since it’s now closer to National Whistleblowers Day, which comes up again on July 30 – if Cheetolini signs it (and if he doesn’t, we can celebrate anyway.) Jeffrey is on my radar now because he has a book coming out in October, and Roots Action has sent out an email announcing it. It includes a new essay from him. His essays are always thought provoking, even if one doesn’t always agree with every point. (The last one, for intance, discussed a scene in King Lear – and how the best human being in it is a character who has one line before Regan stabs him, killing him. Jeffrey is not the first person to notice that, but he wrote well about it.)

His newest essay touches on what the Supreme Court is doing, including one case in which Justice Thomas wrote a very strange opinion- an opinion which really ought to interest the Furies. But I’ll let Jeffrey speak:
==================================================================
There is so much to talk about, but recently there have been some developments that reminded me of not only the idealism of law in this country I had when I was in law school, but also the ugly truth of the law when I was persecuted by it. When I was in the desolation of prison, I found it quite interesting how my fellow inmates were so acutely aware of the machinations of the Supreme Court. I thought it somewhat sad that a direct impact like incarceration was what encouraged a person to pay attention to the decisions of the highest court of the land. But, that is typical of people outside prison walls as well, isn’t it? Most Americans pay little attention to the day’s issues unless and until there is either a direct or perceived impact. The latest round of decisions from the highest court reminds me of the dangers of not paying attention to decisions of the Supreme Court.

This most recent Supreme Court term has been surprising in many ways. I was genuinely surprised when the court struck down the Trump administration’s attempt to put a citizenship question on the census, and genuinely saddened when the Court refused to see the obvious implications to the constitutional doctrine of the separation of church and state by allowing a giant cross to remain on public land as well as refusing to address partisan gerrymandering. Reading over those decisions, it seems apparent to me that basing an administration policy on outright, unsupported bias is frowned upon by the Court, but plain as day government support of religious favoritism and political/racial shenanigans which interfere with the sacred right to vote, are issues the highest court of the land does not see as counter to the principles of the Constitution.

In law school, I learned that The Constitution is supposed to protect the people from the government, but increasingly with political appointments, dogmatic inclinations, it is being used as a tool to protect the government from the people. Stagnating the principles of the highest law of the land is akin to killing a document that was meant to be a living, evolving protection for the people….

This raises the question, who are Supreme Court judges accountable to? Certainly no reasonable application of the law can withstand the political leanings which usually result in decisions that show a propensity to arbitrarily mold the law to an issue as opposed to fitting an alleged act to the law. Seems many on this current Supreme Court are accountable to nothing but their own politically inspired and beholden whims and shortsightedness. Take for example the ravings of Justice Clarence Thomas. This term, his true self has sprung up loud and clear, particularly in some of his dissents. In particular, in one case, Thomas felt the obvious racist actions by a prosecutor against a black defendant were “blameless.” Astonishingly, he was not alone in that dissent. Dissenting opinions may not seem all important, but I remember in law school one of my favorite professors routinely encouraged his students to review dissenting opinions as a way of gaining better insight on the majority opinion and also to provide a snapshot of a particular justice or justices and what direction the court could potentially take. History has shown that dissent, particularly on the Supreme Court, can eventually turn into the majority. I’m not sure, given the current propensities of the Court, whether that is a good or bad eventuality.

I do believe judges, and particularly Supreme Court justices, have to be held accountable for their decisions. The confirmation process is nothing more than a litmus test of political support, not inquiry on the fitness of a person to sit on the highest court of the land. A start could be abolishing lifetime appointments and voting in elected officials who are more interested in the sanctity of the law as opposed to their dogmatic and political ambitions which do more to divide the country than to unify it.

Given the obvious ambivalence of the Supreme Court, I hope more attention will be given to their decisions. I fear the implications of not doing so. Like my fellow inmates, when you’ve waited until the last minute to be hopeful for a good outcome, most times it is too late.
==================================================================
Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone, I suppose it’s past praying for to expect Justice Thomas to wake up and smell the coffee. But I hope you will still keep an eye on him – and on the Court as a whole.

The Furies and I will be back.

Cross posted to Care2 HERE.
