From Raw Story:

Europeans tend to see a lot of American ideals and behaviors as bizarre. In particular, they aren’t wild about our politics and our food (though they love our television and our movies). And when it comes to sex? Well, Europeans tend to view us as the land of the free, home of the batshit crazy. Below are some of the biggest sexual WTFs Europeans have about America….

3. Our fear of hugs.  Research has shown that non-sexual physical contact has a profound impact on people’s emotional and physical well-being. Despite this knowledge, and our hyper-sexualized tendencies, America is one of the most touch-phobic countries in the world. A global study on touch rated the United States among “the lowest touch countries studied.” In contrast, the high-touch countries include Spain, France, Italy, and Greece. Some researchers think our fear of platonic touching actually leads to violence, particularly in young males. In one study, American adolescents were shown to touch each other far less and be more aggressive toward their peers compared with French adolescents.

While there are many reasons why Europe has a much lower violent crime rate than the U.S, could a lack of healthy physical connection add to this trend? In 2012, research conducted by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime found that the U.S. had a “homicide rate of 4.8 per 100,000 people compared to only 0.3 per 100,000 in Iceland, 0.7 per 100,000 in Sweden, 0.8 per 100,000 in Denmark and Spain, 0.9 per 100,000 in Italy, Austria and the Netherlands, 1.0 per 100,000 in France, and 1.2 per 100,000 in Portugal and the Republic of Ireland.”’

Everyday Erinyes #156

Posted by at 1:10 pm  Politics

Experts in autocracies have pointed out that it is, unfortunately, easy to slip into normalizing the tyrant, hence it is important to hang on to outrage. These incidents which seem to call for the efforts of the Greek Furies (Erinyes) to come and deal with them will, I hope, help with that. As a reminder, though no one really knows how many there were supposed to be, the three names we have are Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone. These roughly translate as “unceasing,” “grudging,” and “vengeful destruction.”

Last week I featured a racism incident, which I haven’t done for a while. However, February being Black History Month, I’m doing it again today, times two. I would love for there not to be any of these, but I don’t see that happening in my lifetime, alas.

This incident happened late in 2018, in Raleigh, NC. This week it was presented to the City Council of Raleigh, along with demands to hold the Raleigh Police Department accountable.

It started out reasonably – or at least not unreasonably. An AT&T store had been robbed; phones were stolen. I would say “pricey phones,” but, these days, that’s a tautology. The police recovered a cardboard box left behind by one of the suspects. The box had on it the address of a Raleigh home. On this basis, the police obtained a search warrant for the home. So far, no insanity.

The home was the residence of LaDonna Clark, her elderly parents, and her six-year-old son Ayden. The suspect was named Brian Clark. Brian is in fact a relative of LsDonna (it’s not been published what the relationship is), but was not living in the home at the time.

Brian Clark has a record, including for breaking and entering and second-degree burglary. I would guess he was on probation at this point, because, at some point previous to the issuance of the warrant, police had come to LaDonna’s home for a “check-in” and learned he did not reside there at that time.

Probation officers are police officers, but I would expect – especially in a city the size of Raleigh – they would work out of a different location from detective officers, and would not routinely talk to each other. And, the warrant having been executed at night, no probation officers may have been on duty. Based on their evidence it doesn’t seem unreasonable for the detectives to expect Brian to be at that address. In any case, armed officers arrived at LaDonna’s home with the warrant in mid-November, on a 35-degree, rainy night. (As an aside, no, that is not “normal” weather for Raleigh in November.)

It was after the warrant was served and LaDonna explained Brian didn’t live there and was not there, that things started to get out of hand.

During the search, LaDonna Clark said officers forced her son, who’s autistic and suffers from cerebral palsy, out of the home “on a 35-degree and rainy night” and pointed loaded military rifles at his head.

He was “made to sit on the cold, wet ground for well over an hour by [the police] SWAT [team],” she told council members of the incident. “If you’re not offended by the thought of a 6-year-old being forced to look down the barrel of an assault rifle or if you have become desensitized to the mistreatment of blacks in the city of Raleigh, [then] you don’t deserve to continue to sit where you are sitting.”

LaDonna’s parents were also aimed at with rifles.

It was only after repeated failures to get any kind of satisfactory response from the Police Department that LaDonna Clark requested and received a hearing by the City Council. She – and others – called (and have been calling) for

a police oversight committee with subpoena power to begin holding officers accountable. The move would require approval from the General Assembly.

Speaking of freezing weather, there has also been freezing weather in Hagerstown, Maryland, although that’s more to be expected than in Raleigh.

A fourteen year old student there, Tymier Tazewell, was on the school bus on January 28, when he realized his sister was crying. He asked her what had happened, and she told him some bullies had called her things she did not want to repeat.

Tymier confronted them, and they next day was called in to the office of the principal of E. Russell Hicks Middle School and told that he had referrals prohibiting him from riding the school bus from Jan. 30 to Feb. 1.

Tymier’s parents do not live together, and my guess is that neither Tymier nor his sister wanted to create a burden for his father, because neither told him about the “bus suspension.”

On Thursday, Jan. 31, the school called [Rasheem] Tazewell [Tymier’s father] to report Tymier didn’t show up for morning classes.

“I thought he was cutting class, but when I called back to get more information, I was told he arrived,” Tazewell said. “The school had a late start that day, so it made sense he was late.”

That day Tymier’s mother, who does not live with Rasheem, wound up calling Tymier’s father when she discovered their son wasn’t riding the bus.

It took until Friday, Feb. 1, for Tymier’s father to drive up the school regarding the boy’s three-day suspension, during which time the student had been trekking about 40 minutes to school in 4 degree weather. Sometimes, Tymier would be joined by friends as he cut through the woods to gt to school. They’d also stop inside the local CVS to warm up.

The assistant principal claimed not to have a current phone number for Tymier’s father (yet the school managed to reach him on Thursday?) as an excuse for not notifying him of the bus suspension (or following through with the rest of the appropriate procedures.)

Tazewell and his son’s mother met with the principal of E. Russell Hicks on Monday, but they feel the issue is being brushed off with no resolution.

Washington County Public Schools released a statement saying it is “currently looking into this incident and it would be premature to provide a response at this time.”

Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone, Please pursue justice both in North Carolina and in Maryland. Thank you.

The Furies and I will be back.

It’s that time of week again, so here are three video clips from Bill’s show last night.  Enjoy!

Monologue: The State of Our Union

Bill is fixated on Bezos’ dick, because he knows Donnie Tiny Hands is jealous of it. Thomas Norman will surely be promoted within the Republican Reich.

Gov. Chris Christie (aka PIGnocchio)

Barf Bag Alert!!

I disagree with Bill. PIGnocchio is putting on an act. He was not so nice when he shut down the George Washington bridge and people died. Bill should be challenging him, not coddling him.

New Rule: The Republicans Are the Problem

Congress is not broken. The Republican Party is broken. Bill is as right about this as he was wrong about PIGnocchio.

2/3 of Bill’s show was excellent.  He should not have brought PIGnocchio on to plug his book.

It’s still cold here in the CatBox, and we still have a Winter Storm Warning.  Tomorrow I may have no more than a Personal Update with no links messages.  WWWendy will be here to thaw the stinky, iced TomCat under hot water.  We have so much to get done, I’ll have little or no time for research and writing.  After hours of work, our transition to SSL is now complete.  The authentication and encryption our  SSL provide helps secure our content  and connections from attacks by the Republican Reich and their Russian allies.

From YouTube (CNN Channel): Whitaker clashes with lawmaker over donations

What America needs to understand is that nobody can qualify for any high office in the Republican Reich without being thoroughly vetted to demonstrate long-term criminal history and intent. Shitaker personifies this truth. RESIST!!

From Alternet: After Justice Brett Kavanaugh was condemned on Thursday for declaring “war” on Roe v. Wade by dissenting against the Supreme Court’s decision to block a Louisiana anti-abortion law, reproductive rights groups quickly turned their ire toward Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) for casting the decisive vote to confirm the right-wing judge—and ramped up their efforts to oust her in 2020.

“Paging Senator Collins—this is on you,” UltraViolet declared on Twitter after the high court’s 5-4 decision.

A grassroots fundraising effort to unseat Collins after her decisive vote last year to confirm Kavanaugh has already raised millions of dollars, and the advocacy group Demand Justice announced in an email to supporters on Friday morning that it will run digital ads in Maine highlighting the judge’s dissent in the Louisiana case as yet another reason the Maine Republican should be ousted in 2020.

“Brett Kavanaugh has declared war on Roe, and Susan Collins is the one who made it possible,” Demand Justice director Brian Fallon said. “Even as it was obvious to everyone else that Kavanaugh was a partisan warrior committed to rolling back abortion rights, Collins defended her vote for him by promising that he would follow Supreme Court precedent. It only took four months for Kavanaugh to prove Collins’ promises were a sham.”

I could not agree more. We came close to defeating the nomination of Injustice Pervert Kava-Nazi. We failed when Collins betrayed her promise with the ridiculous excuse that he would protect women’s right to choose. RESIST!!

(DISCLAIMER NOTE: Sorry for being so late, but as you might know from the news, KCMO and a good deal of the Midwest got hit with a triple-whammy weather-wise this week.  We first got hit with the dreaded freezing rain; then we got hit with a layer of sleet; then it was topped off by a little snow.

(Today was the first day we got double-digit temperatures – but only in the teens.  I needed to take advantage of our “balmy” weather to work on getting my downhill driveway drivable – rather than slidable – as I haven’t left the house now in four days. End of Disclaimer.)

The Clap Heard Round the World

No doubt we’ve all seen Speaker Pelosi’s now famous “FU” clap to Twitler during his SOTU speech this past Tuesday.  (And in this instance, that “FU” is NOT the medical acronym for “Follow-Up”.)

But since it was such an iconic moment, I can’t help but feel we should memorialize it.

Pelosi has accomplished something few thought possible: she turned a clap into a viral art form.  I mean, who could imagine that she could use it to send a message of disdain, condescension, umbrage and even threats of revenge.  She clearly has become the new “Plaid Shirt Guy”.

And almost instantly it became a popular Internet Meme with many iterations, so let’s enjoy a few.

First, a quick review of Pelosi in action:

Some folks penned their observations about “The Clap”:

I liked the way he turned to her looking for approval.
– Did I read it good, Mrs. Pelosi?
– You did very well, Donnie. Now clear up the crayons and make sure your desk is tidy before recess.

WaPo Comment 1

I don’t understand all the analysis.  The dynamic is very clear: Grandma is applauding a three-year-old for not throwing his breakfast on the floor.

WaPo Comment 2

Some decided to take advantage of the cutout created for Photoshopping and have her appear in familiar scenes, just like Forrest Gump did:

Others decided to caption that famous photo:

And my favorite caption:

But as far as Trump’s SOTU speech, I think Twitler’s very own special guest, Joshua Trump, speaks for us all:

But I want to leave you with a strong positive note.

It’s been well documented that women rocked the vote in the 2018 midterms.  And on Tuesday they made a powerful statement dressed in white – joined by the in-your-face taunt of daughter, Tiffany Trump.

So it’s no wonder that I love the GIF that “Man In the Hoody” put together titled “she will rock u”.

I had hearing back in 1977 when Queen recorded “We Will Rock You”.  So just from the excellent visual cues in this GIF I was able to enjoy remembering the lyrics:

Stomp Stomp Clap

Stomp Stomp Clap

Stomp Stomp Clap

Stomp Stomp Clap

Stomp Stomp Clap

Stomp Stomp Clap

Buddy, you’re a boy, make a big noise

Playing in the street, gonna be a big man someday

You got mud on your face, you big disgrace

Kicking your can all over the place, singin’

We will, we will rock you

We will, we will rock you

I can hardly wait to see what Speaker Pelosi will do to Twitler in SOTU #3 … assuming he’s even around for #3.

Is the A for Audacious?

Once upon a time, even before Politics Plus moved to WordPress in March 2010, we only had around twenty tags.  One of the first was "Progressive Issues".  On those issues, a new champion has arisen in support of green energy, the poor and middle classes, single payer health care, human rights, voting rights, women’s rights and much more.  But she may have been fibbing to us about her name.  Is it really Audacious Ocasio-Cortez?

USA-CLIMATE/GREENNEWDEAL

Chuck Todd had a fascinating conversation yesterday with Alexandria Casio-Cortez [sic]. They touched on Medicare for All, and the Green New Deal, and the freshman congresswoman showed she knows exactly what she’s doing, and how she’s going to get there.

"Are there specific red lines for you? Medicare for All — do you have to say you’ll do it or is aspiring to it in the future enough for you?" he asked.

"I think that we need commitments with teeth. I don’t want to be placated as a progressive. And I know the progressive movement does not want to be placated in 2020," she said…

…"When I talk about what I want in a 2020 candidate, I want a candidate that says we can do these things, we can be audacious. To overcome this moment, we need to return to our FDR roots as a party."…

From The New Yorker: Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s facial expression during the State of the Union address came under continued attack from Republicans on Thursday, with the former House Speaker John Boehner joining the chorus of disapproval.

“When I saw her with that pained expression on her face, I couldn’t believe my eyes,” Boehner said. “It was like nothing I had ever seen before in my life.”

The former Speaker said that Ocasio-Cortez broke his “No. 1 rule” of reacting to a State of the Union speech: “No matter what the President is saying, be sure to look cheerful and upbeat at all times.”
