Although I slept well last night, it’s still an exhausted day here in the CatBox.  I suspect it will take a few to recover from the vote count.  WWWendy is coming mid afternoon, and we’re having BBQ ribs for supper.  Oh and Shit (her dawgs) are jumping for joy.  They get the bones.  Tomorrow is a normal day.  Go Broncos!

From Crooks and Liars: Philadelphia Mayor Has Advice For Trump: ‘Put Your Big Boy Pants On’

Does Trump* actually have any big boy pants? Ask Stormy. She knows!  RESIST!!

From NY Times: For a world that held its breath as Americans went to the polls last Tuesday, the triumph of Joseph R. Biden Jr. over President Trump provoked many emotions, but above all, a profound sigh of relief.

As news of Mr. Biden’s victory reverberated from Europe and the Middle East to Asia and Latin America on Saturday, foreign leaders showered him with congratulations. Diplomats and commentators expressed gratitude, satisfaction and even jubilation that a new president would bring a much-needed return to normalcy — something that vanished alarmingly the day Mr. Trump took office.

“Welcome back America!” the mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, said in a Twitter message to Mr. Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, hailing Canada’s historic friendship with the United States, said, “I’m really looking forward to working together.” President Emmanuel Macron of France said, “We have a lot to do to overcome today’s challenges. Let’s work together!” Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany declared, “Our trans-Atlantic friendship is irreplaceable, if we want to overcome the great challenges of our time.”

For many world leaders, the importance of this election was as much about removing Mr. Trump as ushering in Mr. Biden.

In 2004 thousands of Americans, including me, sent pictures of ourselves holding “I’m Sorry!” signs to a website that used them to create a collage of Americans apologizing to the world for the reelection of the Fuhrer of the Fourth Reich, GW ChickenHawk, aka Crawford Caligula. Thank God I don’t have to do that again this year, because the Fuhrer of the Fifth Reich, Trump*, makes GW look like a saint!  RESIST!!

From Alternet: One day after Donald Trump learned he won’t be serving a second term, CNN legal analyst Elie Honig said the president needs to prepare himself for the possibility of criminal indictments the moment President-elect Joe Biden is sworn in.

Speaking with host Christi Paul, the former federal prosecutor said the country should expect a flurry of pardons from Trump including the possibility he may try to pardon himself.

“The president by law retains all of his power until January 20th with the inauguration. With that said, what do you expect is going to happen between now and Inauguration Day?” host Paul asked.

“Hold on tight to your seats,” Honig began. “I think President Trump is going to use every last ounce of power right up until 11:59:59 on January 20th. Watch for pardons; he has the pardon power. Many presidents have used the pardon power in their final dates in office. I’d watch for him to pardon his political allies, Michael Flynn, George Papadopoulos. I would look at the possibility that he might pardon his family members who are under state investigations for fraud. Now presidential pardon doesn’t cover people in a state prosecution, but might well cover them for federal purposes. Then the big question is: will the president try to pardon himself? It’s never happened in our history and we don’t actually know if that’s lawful or not. But if he tries it, we could find out.”

Continuing in that vein, the former prosecutor pointed out what the future holds for the president.

“He loses his protections,” he began. “He’s avoided trouble by being in the White House — there are laws and policies, especially in the Justice Department, that protect a sitting president. He will not be the sitting president at 12:01 on January 20th.”

I’m not sure about that. In fact, It would not surprise me, if Trump resigns before his term expires, so Pence can pardon him. If that does not happen, it’s only because Pence can’t pardon him for State charges.  RESIST!!

Everyday Erinyes #239

Experts in autocracies have pointed out that it is, unfortunately, easy to slip into normalizing the tyrant, hence it is important to hang on to outrage. These incidents which seem to call for the efforts of the Greek Furies (Erinyes) to come and deal with them will, I hope, help with that. As a reminder, though no one really knows how many there were supposed to be, the three names we have are Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone. These roughly translate as “unceasing,” “grudging,” and “vengeful destruction.”

Well, Joe has won Pennsylvania, and therefore the presidency. Trump will be gone. Trumpism, unfortunately, will not. Which means our fight is not over. Here is an article with some reasons why, and considerations for what needs to be done.

5 reasons not to underestimate far-right extremists

Far-right extremists have been in the news, with an alleged plot to kidnap Michigan’s governor and rallies like the one the Proud Boys held in Portland in September.

With a hotly contested election underway in a polarized society, many people are concerned about violence from far-right extremists. But they may not understand the real threat.

The law enforcement community is among those who have failed to understand the true nature and danger of far-right extremists. Over several decades, the FBI and other federal authorities have only intermittently paid attention to far-right extremists. In recent years, they have again acknowledged the extent of the threat. But it’s not clear how long their attention will last.

While researching my forthcoming book, “It Can Happen Here: White Power and the Rising Threat of Genocide in the U.S.,” I discovered that there are five key mistakes people make when thinking about far-right extremists. These mistakes obscure the extremists’ true danger.

1. Some have white supremacist views, but others don’t

When asked to condemn white supremacists and extremists at the first presidential debate, President Donald Trump floundered, then said, “Give me a name.” His Democratic challenger Joe Biden offered, “The Proud Boys.”

Not all far-right extremists are militant white supremacists.

White supremacy, the belief in white racial superiority and dominance, is a major theme of many far-right believers. Some, like the Ku Klux Klan and neo-Nazis, are extremely hardcore hate groups.

Others, who at times identify themselves with the term “alt-right,” often mix racism, anti-Semitism and claims of white victimization in a less militant way. In addition, there are what some experts have called the “alt-lite,” like the Proud Boys, who are less violent and disavow overt white supremacy even as they promote white power by glorifying white civilization and demonizing nonwhite people including Muslims and many immigrants.

There is another major category of far-right extremists who focus more on opposing the government than they do on racial differences. This so-called “patriot movement” includes tax protesters and militias, many heavily armed and a portion from military and law enforcement backgrounds. Some, like the Hawaiian-shirt-wearing Boogaloos, seek civil war to overthrow what they regard as a corrupt political order.

2. They live in cities and towns across the nation and even the globe

Far-right extremists are in communities all across America.

The KKK, often thought of as centered in the South, has chapters from coast to coast. The same is true of other far-right extremist groups, as illustrated by the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Hate Map.

Far-right extremism is also global, a point underscored by the 2011 massacre in Norway and the 2019 New Zealand mosque attack, both of which were perpetrated by people claiming to resist “white genocide.” The worldwide spread led the U.N. to recently issue a global alert about the “growing and increasing transnational threat” of right-wing extremism.

3. Many are well-organized, educated and social-media savvy

Far-right extremists include people who write books, wear sport coats and have advanced degrees. For instance, in 1978 a physics professor turned neo-Nazi wrote a book that has been called the “bible of the racist right.” Other leaders of the movement have attended elite universities.

Far-right extremists were early users of the internet and now thrive on social media platforms, which they use to agitate, recruit and organize. The 2017 “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville revealed how effectively they could reach large groups and mobilize them into action.

Platforms like Facebook and Twitter have recently attempted to ban many of them. But the alleged Michigan kidnappers’ ability to evade restrictions by simply creating new pages and groups has limited the companies’ success.

4. They were here long before Trump and will remain here long after

Many people associate far-right extremism with the rise of Trump. It’s true that hate crimes, anti-Semitism and the number of hate groups have risen sharply since his campaign began in 2015. And the QAnon movement – called both a “collective delusion” and a “virtual cult” – has gained widespread attention.

But far-right extremists were here long before Trump.

The history of white power extremism dates back to slave patrols and the post-Civil War rise of the KKK. In the 1920s, the KKK had millions of members. The following decade saw the rise of Nazi sympathizers, including 15,000 uniformed “Silver Shirts” and a 20,000 person pro-Nazi rally at Madison Square Garden in New York City in 1939.

While adapting to the times, far-right extremism has continued into the present. It’s not dependent on Trump, and will remain a threat regardless of his public prominence.

5. They pose a widespread and dire threat, with some seeking civil war

Far-right extremists often appear to strike in spectacular “lone wolf” attacks, like the Oklahoma City federal building bombing in 1995, the mass murder at a Charleston church in 2015 and the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting in 2018. But these people are not alone.

Most far-right extremists are part of larger extremist communities, communicating by social media and distributing posts and manifestos.

Their messages speak of fear that one day, whites may be outnumbered by nonwhites in the U.S., and the idea that there is a Jewish-led plot to destroy the white race. In response, they prepare for a war between whites and nonwhites.

[Deep knowledge, daily. Sign up for The Conversation’s newsletter.]

Thinking of these extremists as loners risks missing the complexity of their networks, which brought as many as 13 alleged plotters together in the planning to kidnap Michigan’s governor.

Together, these misconceptions about far-right extremist individuals and groups can lead Americans to underestimate the dire threat they pose to the public. Understanding them, by contrast, can help people and experts alike address the danger, as the election – and its aftermath – unfolds. The Conversation

Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone, I listened to (Derrick Wang’s opera) Scalia/Ginsburg this afternoon. I hope that the time when people with such disagreements could be friends is not over, though I fear it is – it has become too clear that politics are not just politics, that morality is a huge factor in political policy and decisions. We shall see. And I know we shall not stop working for a better world.

It’s a day to celebrate, here in the CatBox.  I had just gotten up from resting my back and was in the throne room.  Just aster I flushed, I heard the TV in the next room announce that Joe Biden had won Pennsylvania and is now the President elect of the United States.  In short, I was the one to flush the foulest turd in US history.  Tomorrow is is a Holy Day the Church of the Ellipsoid Orb.  My Broncos are playing the Atlanta Falcons, but it won’t be televised here.  But I’ll even let their turd birds beat my Broncos if they promise to elect Ossoff and Warnock in January.  Tomorrow is also a WWWendy day, but I will still be writing.  Wendy won’t be here until mid-afternoon.  Thank God for blessing America today!

From Daily Kos: Moscow Mitch McConnell is twisting his pretend mustache and rubbing his hands together in preparation for how he’s going to block everything presumed President Joe Biden wants to accomplish. And reportedly, Biden is considering “limiting its prospective Cabinet nominees to those who Mitch McConnell can live with, according to people familiar with the matter.” That’s Axios reporting, so all the grains of salt.

They have a source “close to McConnell” who tells them that “a Republican Senate would work with Biden on centrist nominees but no ‘radical progressives’ or ones who are controversial with conservatives.” The source adds: “It’s going to be armed camps.” It’s not just Axios. CNBC reporter Eamon Javers confirms from a source in touch with Biden’s transition team says “the transition will have to re-evaluate the names it has in mind for Senate confirmed positions. May have to send more moderate figures who can get through. Wall Street will like that.” So Biden is definitely hearing that message. That doesn’t mean he has to heed it. If he wants to save the nation, he will ignore it and bulldoze through with the progressive team he promised the millions of people who’ve worked and voted for him.

In other words, Bought Bitch Midnight Moscow Mitch will accept nothing to the left of Joe Liebermann. I like the Idea I heard from JD, I think. Nominate a strong liberal, and when BBMMM says NO, make an interim appointment to the left of AOC.  RESIST!!

From NY Times: Control of the Senate hung in the balance on Friday in Georgia after Senator David Perdue, a Republican, fell just short of the majority of votes he needed to win re-election, setting the stage for a second January runoff in the rapidly changing state.

With the Senate narrowly divided between Republicans and Democrats, the twin rematches scheduled for just two weeks before Inauguration Day will almost certainly determine which party comes away with the power to shape the fate of Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s agenda if he prevails to win the White House, as expected.

Facing such extraordinarily high stakes, both parties were quickly positioning themselves for a nine-week, year-end sprint that could cost another $100 million and amount to a referendum on the outcome of the presidential election. The runoffs promised to thrust a quickly evolving Georgia into the center of the nation’s political fray and test the extent of Democrats’ emerging strength in what was once a Republican stronghold in the Deep South.

Georgia’s special Senate election has been destined for a runoff since Tuesday, when the Rev. Dr. Raphael Warnock, a Democrat, and Senator Kelly Loeffler, a Republican, emerged as the top two vote getters in a crowded field vying to replace the retired senator Johnny Isakson.

I plan to donate to the campaigns of both Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock. It’s a long shot, but if we win either, we take the Senate.  RESIST!!

From YouTube (Bernie Sanders Channel): After Biden’s Victory, Our Struggle Continues

I fully agree with Bernie on all significant issues with the following caveat. We tend to want big change and want it NOW!  However, most American voters are too timid and cowardly for radical change. As frustrating as it can be for us, the only way for us to get the change that we want and that America needs is through an incremental approach. Fortunately, Joe Biden is an incrementalist. Were he not, Trump would have won. We’ll need to hold Joe’s feet to the fire to make sure he doesn’t buy so-called Republican compromises they will never intend to keep, but we also need to give him our support when the good things he tries to accomplish are not as extensive, as fast, or as perfect as we want.  RESIST!!

From YouTube (Parody Project Channel): WHEN YOU GO AWAY – A Parody for the Election

Truth be told, I actually wasn’t going to do a Friday Fun because I’ve been gloomy about the election.  (Although it now looks like we might very well have a LANDSIDE Electoral College victory!)

But then, courtesy of Right Wing Watch, I came across Trump’s “spiritual advisor” – Paula White – leading a prayer to turn the results around to make him win.  I wanted to make sure to share with you guys & gals how far off the tracks the Trump Train has gone.

Those not familiar with Paula White, a talibangelical christianist and Grifter-Supreme, of course she has a very scandalous background – including multiple marriages, bankruptcies and having her “church” investigated by the Senate Finance Committee from 2007 through 2011.  Is it any wonder Trump would pick her as an “advisor”?

Oh, and if you want to scroll through some views of her $1.1+ MILLION home in Florida (naturally), be my guest:

https://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/421-Kentucky-Blue-Cir_Apopka_FL_32712_M64552-07882#photo0

Back to the “prayer” – I did find a Transcript of what she was saying:

White is heard saying:

“Strike, strike, strike until you have victory, for every enemy that is aligned against you, let there be that we would strike the ground for you will give us victory, God.

“I hear a sound of an abundance of rain, I hear a sound of victory, I hear a sound of shouting and singing, I hear a sound of victory.

White repeats the “I hear a sound of an abundance of rain, I hear a sound of victory,” a couple of times and then says: “The Lord says it is done, the Lord says it is done, the Lord says it is done.

“For I hear victory, victory, victory, victory in the quarters of heaven, in the quarters of heaven I hear victory…

“For angels are being released right now, angels are being dispatched right now, [speaks in tongues] for angels have even been dispatched from Africa right now, Africa right now, Africa right now, they’re coming here, they’re coming here in the name of Jesus, from South America, they’re coming here…”

As you can imagine, there are literally dozens and dozens of music remixes to her “supplication” – which all are lost on me.  So I’ll stick to the ones that have a visual impact.

While most cats were incredulous …

There was one who definitely was feeling the beat …

While lots of people are trying to figure out who the guy carrying a bathrobe and reading a newspaper walking behind White was doing, this is the longest clip (at the end) that I was able to find of him:

Saving the best for last, someone decided to improve on White’s hammering away during her “pleadings”:

“Pray” all you want Paula – to quote a certain someone: “It is what it is.”

Happy Guy Fawkes Day, if anyone cares (actually yesterday.) Besides the two runoffs n Georgia, there will also be a runoff in North Carolina for Senate. That’s three chances we have. I believe we need two. I featured Rev. Raphael Warnock yesterday, and Jon Ossoff today. I could not find anything new from Cal Cunningham, bu will not be ignoring him. TC, that fat lady might want to save a little breath.

I heard about this last night but it took me till this morning to find it. And I think it’s important.

And I also heard about this one, and it was posted in a comment to the previous one. Sometimes Anderson does come up with a quotable.

The Lincoln Project for Ossoff (v. Perdue). He may not be all that liberal, but he is brutally honest, and I want him in the Senate.

This scene from “Hitler” has been parodied before, but it’s now been re-parodied for this occasion.

Hoo boy, does Beau ever speak for me today.
