Everyday Erinyes #170

Experts in autocracies have pointed out that it is, unfortunately, easy to slip into normalizing the tyrant, hence it is important to hang on to outrage. These incidents which seem to call for the efforts of the Greek Furies (Erinyes) to come and deal with them will, I hope, help with that. As a reminder, though no one really knows how many there were supposed to be, the three names we have are Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone. These roughly translate as “unceasing,” “grudging,” and “vengeful destruction.”

NEWS FLASH: It seems that people are human, and humans are not perfect. (In other news, life isn’t always fair.)

Therefore, if you want to accomplish something good, something that will bring true improvement into people’s lives, you should probably put some time into considering what could possibly go wrong. And not just to cut things going wrong off at the pass, either. But also to establish appropriate responses to the results of things going wrong – because, as a corollary to Murphy’s Law states, “If anything can go wrong, it will.”

The State of New Mexico (like probably every level of government anywhere in the United States, and that just for starters) wants to minimize and/or eliminate child abuse. Therefore, the State has a child abuse hotline and a mandatory reporting requirement – also like everyone else. But there does seem to be one little loose end (which I can’t compare to everyone else because I don’t really know each law):

A knowingly false report of child abuse is illegal, and many states impose strict penalties against any person who files such a report. In New Mexico, failure to report a case of child abuse is a misdemeanor punishable by a year in jail and a fine of $1,000. But filing a false report effectively carries no punishment whatsoever.

Parents, attorneys, advocates and CYFD employees agree that such malicious reports by school personnel are widespread, both here in New Mexico and across the country.

Searchlight New Mexico is a non-partisan, nonprofit news organization dedicated to investigative and public service journalism in the interest of the people of New Mexico. Searchlight launched an investigation into abuse of the abuse line, in the course of which it spoke with 28 parents who had personal stories to tell of false reports made about them to the New Mexico Children, Youth & Families Department (CYFD).

Gail Stewart is an attorney in Albuquerque, whose focus is not on false CYFD reports, but it is on helping children with disabilities and their parents, so she has run across false reports many times. Her take on false report is simple: “the root of it is a prejudice against children with disabilities.”

Christy Cartwright in Carrizozo has five children, of whom at least three have some kind of disability or difference leading to issues at school which caused her to address those issues with the school.

When 16-year-old Carlos became the target of homophobic bullying, the parents demanded that the school put an end to it. When a special education teacher drove Marcus, who has schizophrenia and autism, up into the mountains and left him to wander lost and alone for hours, Cartwright went ballistic. When Ashley, an 8th grader at Carrizozo Middle School, struggled for two years without a legally required update to her individualized education plan, the parents complained. Loudly.

(Christy in the middle, Marcus in the purple.)

Christy openly describes herself as a “pain in the ass” to school administration, because she won’t leave them alone until – and unless – they do their jobs. Then,

[W]hen a state investigator showed up at Christy Cartwright’s doorstep in January, the mother of five was horrified to learn that an employee of Carrizozo Municipal Schools had reported her for child abuse….

Then, less than a month later, another investigator from the New Mexico Children, Youth & Families Department came knocking — this time with two new reports filed by an anonymous school employee.

The first report accused Cartwright of abusing her grandson — who earlier that year had moved to Texas. The second said that Cartwright’s kids had missed more than two consecutive weeks of school: a clear case of educational neglect. It also accused her and her partner, Harold Burch, of giving the children marijuana, suggested the parents were high on meth, and charged them with “brain washing the children to say they are bullied at school.”

Two months later, CYFD sent Cartwright an official letter concluding that all allegations made by the school were baseless. The state tossed out the case

So, she was vindicated. But there is no way to give her – and her family – back that two months of their lives. And, with no system in place to track and prosecute false reports, there is not even any way to hold the monsters who would make such false reports against innocent people accountable.

Cindy and her partner Harold Burch were driven to request that a police officer sit in any time either or both of them spoke with a school official. This resulted in some body cam recordings which show a school principal acting very Republican indeed. I’m not going to quote any of that because I’d have to re-read it multiple times while editing, and I have to watch my blood pressure. You can find it in my source article, though.

Law enforcement has taken, and is taking, a pretty much hands-off position on any action which might discourage false reports – because any such action might also discourage valid reports. In a way, this argument is similar to the issue of whether or not there should be a question about citizenship on the census. While the answers might be interesting, we have done without that information for a long, long time – and it will certainly make enough people nervous enough to result in significant undercounts – and that will seriously harm our country.

however, it shouldn’t require a lawsuit, or even constant nagging – to get a school to produce a legally required individualized education plan for a special needs student either.  Or to prevent a teacher from playing “Hansel and Gretel” with your kids.

Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone, you are all smart cookies. Perhaps you can get together with advocates and activists and help them to design and write provisions for a model tracking system, which will work, but not be intimidating to those in a position to make valid reports. Such a model would provide a service, not only to New Mexico, but to the entire country.

The Furies and I will be back.

Smellyanne Above the Law

In 1939, Congress passed the Hatch Act.  In simple terms, it states that government employees may not engage in political activities, while on the job.  In short, when on the taxpayers’ dollar, they work for the taxpayers, not for Republican Reich.  Smellyanne Conway, pin-up girl and councilor to the Fuhrer of the Republican Reich, Resident Donald Trump, has violated the Hatch Act so extensively that the Office of Special Counsel has demanded her immediate dismissal.  Trump says no.

0614Smellyanne

President Trump said Friday that he will not fire White House counselor Kellyanne Conway for repeated violations of the Hatch Act, which bars federal employees from engaging in political activity in the course of their work.

“Well I got briefed on it yesterday, and it looks to me like they’re trying to take away her right of free speech, and that’s just not fair,” Trump said during an interview on Fox News.

His comments came a day after the Office of Special Counsel publicly recommended Conway’s removal from federal office, calling her a “repeat offender.”

A report submitted to Trump found that Conway violated the Hatch Act on numerous occasions by “disparaging Democratic presidential candidates while speaking in her official capacity during television interviews and on social media.”… [emphasis added]

Inserted from <Washington Post>

That does not take away her right of free speech, because she could say the same thing in her own driveway, just not on the job.  The White House also said that, it does not apply to Twitter, because the Act does not mention Twitter by name.  That’s absurd, because it applies to TV, which also was not around in 1939.

Lawrence O’Donnell had been documenting Smellyanne’s Hatch Act violations for some time.

This is not new.  During the GW Bush Administration, the failed Fourth Reich, Karl Rove scheduled cabinet members to appear in their official capacity at campaign rallies during the 2006 midterms.  Why should Republicans campaign on their donors’ money, when they can do so on our money?

It’s a muggy day here in the CatBox.  My eyes are burning and my COPD is acting up.  Right now Portland has the highest grass pollen count in the US.  I slept poorly last night, because of residual heat.

Short Takes:

From YouTube (MSNBC Channel): Mike Pompeo Constructs Iran Narrative Moving US Toward War Footing

Since Pompeo blamed Iran, before any evidence was even available makes it highly likely that Pompeo knew that the attack was going to take place, before it happened. The Maine, Gulf of Tonkin, or WMD redux? RESIST!!

From Daily Kos: Back in May, Mitch McConnell passed a milestone: over 100 pieces of legislation that were passed by the Democratic-controlled House have been halted by the Senate majority leader before they ever got a vote. McConnell bragged about turning the Senate into a legislative cemetery, and he’s being a good crypt-keeper by making sure that even the most critical bills are dead on arrival.

That includes sorely needed legislation that would provide election security for 2020. As The New York Times reports, McConnell is blocking any vote on a bill that would provide funds to secure state and local election facilities against exactly the sort of attack that Russia carried out successfully in 2016. McConnell is also blocking legislation designed to force companies such as Facebook and Twitter to be more transparent about the sources of political ads.

McConnell is protecting Russia’s hacking. McConnell is protecting Russia’s social media campaign.

What else could McConnell do to grease the skids for more Kremlin interference?

He’s doing everything he can. This is not just Trump. Bought Bitch Mitch and the Republican Reich are conspiring with Russia. RESIST!!

From The New Yorker: The embattled Presidential adviser Kellyanne Conway will leave her post at the White House, effective immediately, and begin a new job at the Kremlin on Friday, the White House and the Kremlin have confirmed.

Conway, who has served as a counsellor to President Donald Trump, will serve as a counsellor to President Vladimir Putin.

The White House press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, announced the news in sombre fashion. “Everyone here is happy for Kellyanne, but our nation has lost a great liar,” she said.

Dang Andy! She so crooked that the Fuhrer is going to keep her. RESIST!!

Whale, Twitler spouting off in another Tweet has yet again provided me (via the Internet) with some low-hanging fruit for Friday Fun.

I’m sure it’s not a breach of security …

GIF

To share with you Twitler’s latest Tweet faux pas.  It was so embarrassing that he has since deleted it, so we’ll have to go with a screenshot:

And of course this started an Internet meme frenzy.  But to set the stage, I think we need to understand that what you and I see is NOT what Twitler sees.

So when he welcomed the Prince of Whales to Winfield House in Regent’s Park (home of the US Ambassador to the UK) for dinner, while we saw this …

Trump saw this …

And when he toasted Charles, while we saw this …

Twitler saw this …

But apparently they had an enjoyable evening (no doubt helped by some soothing music from the orca-stra), because later Trump told a reporter:

“When I met with the Prince of Whales I told him my main porpoise as president was to build The Wall.  And I told him it will be beautiful – just wait ’til you sea it.”

It’s no surprise that the Internet quickly geared up to weigh in with some artwork:

And there were witty Tweets, too.

And to help him remember all those Queens, Princes, Prime Ministers, Presidents and other prestigious Poohbahs that he meets with every day, he has some help:

And someone decided with all the Princes out there, they should be ranked:

While many of us are so embarrassed and saddened by Trump’s boundless stupidity that it makes us blubber with shame, it’s reported that Queen Elizabeth II and Charles actually enjoyed a good chortle from his endless intellectual shortcomings.

(I know my puns are probably krilling you, but just in case you’re curious how you get two whales in a car … you start in London and drive west.)

But to keep the record straight, the official whale spokesperson wanted the last word to let everyone know …

You’re whale-come.

It’s that time of week again, and here are three excellent video clips from Sam’s show last night.  Enjoy!

YouTube Woes

YouTube should regulate underage content. Until they do, and that may be a long, long time, the onus falls on parents to keep videos that could be suggestive of their kids offline.

Multi-Level Marketing Schemes

What a rip off! I used to love Amway products, but got sick of their people trying to scam me into joining.

Pride Like It’s 1969

I trust that I speak for all of us at Politics Plus that we support and celebrate the PRIDE of our LGBTQ friends and family. Happy PRIDE!

Not much humor today, but good content.

It’s not as hot today here in the CatBox.  Yesterday the high at the airport was 99°, but downtown, where I am, it reached 103°.  Today will be in the high 80°s.  I still feel frustrated and depressed, but I’m back in the saddle anyway.

From Daily Kos: Today’s Quinnipiac poll finds all the better known Democratic candidates would defeat Donald Trump if the election were held today.

Joe Biden leads by 53% to 40%

It’s already hot, here in the CatBox.  We set a record yesterday, and today will be even hotter, forecast at 99°.  It may even top 100°.  I need to take one more day off because of the heat, and because I still have to undo a bunch of changes I made in preparation for the move.  I’m also tired, because there was a microwave fire in the building last night.  I hope to be back in the saddle tomorrow.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 3:12 (average 4:51).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Take:

From Huffington Post: Biden, who is leading a crowded pack of Democrats hoping to unseat Trump next year, referenced criticism he had received from some of his presidential competitors for being, in his words, “stuck in the past” by talking about working with congressional Republicans on the campaign trail.

“With Trump gone, you’re going to begin to see things change. Because these folks know better. They know this isn’t what they’re supposed to be doing,” Biden said of Republicans in Congress at a Monday fundraiser in Washington.

Biden could not be more wrong. Republicans were anything but bipartisan, when America had a President (Obama), not just a fascist Resident, unless we go by the Republican definition of bipartisanship:

I have terrible news.  They cancelled my move, because of a paperwork glitch.  They did the paperwork for a Fair Market Unit. To qualify I need < 50% of a median household income. I do quality. The temporary unit I was going to, until a fair unit in the building is available, is a Hooper Detox unit. The government subsidy rep refused to sign off on treating the unit as temporary and insisted I meet the qualifications for that unit, which is < 40% of median household income. I don’t qualify. They explained my disabilities and how they had to put me in an inadequate unit here. The government subsidy rep didn’t care. I must have gotten a damn Republican. I will get the next fair market unit that opens there, be it in a day or a year. I’m so frustrated!  This is my only article today.  I just need a day to cry and get my head around this.  AAAARRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Short Take:

From The New Yorker: Donald Trump has reached a groundbreaking deal with the Hawaiian Islands to make them the nation’s fiftieth state, Trump confirmed on Monday.

Calling it “my most incredible deal yet,” Trump said that he had forced Hawaii to bend to his will and “cough up billions” to become a state.

“This is a big win for our country,” Trump told reporters at the White House. “Hawaii is going to be a beautiful and amazing state.”

Just minutes after his announcement, however, there was significant pushback from Hawaii, which claimed that it had already reached a deal to become a state in 1959.

That claim swiftly drew the ire of Trump, who denounced Hawaii’s alleged sixty years of statehood as “fake news” and “disgraceful.”

Dang Andy! If the Fuhrer steals the 2020 election, Hawaii will agree that it’s fake news and stay out. RESIST!!
