I’ll barely have time to start this, before L leave for the doctor, so I’ll finish when I return.

I’m back.  The appointment was a surprise.  Megan prescribed me Prilosec, as I am  one of the people for whom severe depression is a side effect of Tagamet.  She did an EKG.  It was unchanged.  She referred me to a cardiologist for possible stress test and/or echocardiogram.

Sunday Smile: Potpourri

People have been amazed by the splicing skill in this mash-up Tweet apparently pitting Samuel L. Jackson from “Pulp Fiction” with Brett Kavanaugh during his confirmation hearing.  It’s gotten 80,000 Likes!

There’s no CC so I have no idea what it deals with.  I’d appreciate it if someone would provide just a thumbnail sketch of what it’s about.

Came across an interesting “Dear Abby” letter in today’s paper.  I can see why he’d be worried about sullying his reputation!

[ETA: Above inspired by similar one I saw at Democratic Underground]

And who knew Melania could be funny?  (Yeah, I’m reprising it – because it still makes me chuckle.)

Sitting at the breakfast table in the upstairs living quarters of the White House, Melania tells Donald that she had a dream about him last night.  And in her dream, Trump had finally gotten his huge military parade down Pennsylvania Avenue for which he has so long yearned.

She shares that it was spectacular: Military bands headed the procession that was celebrated by hundreds of thousands of cheering, flag-waving Americans lining both sides of the avenue and stretching as far as the eye could see. A crowd that was easily twice as large as Pres. Obama’s Inauguration.

“I bet I had a huge smile!” Trump exclaimed.

“I couldn’t tell,” Melania replied. “It was a closed casket.”

110-Angelflowers

Angel is a newcomer here at Politics Plus.  She followed us for a while at Care2, and when that site shut down, she popped in to ask me to share my articles at Care2Share, a group of Care2 refugees at Mewe.  She been a regular ever since.  Nevertheless, this was only her 43rd comment here, so I know very little about her.  I have learned that she cares deeply for people, animals and the earth.  She is a dedicated advocate for all.  Based in her IP address, I think she lives in the UK.

Because, her comment was an even  multiple of 10,000, she gets a prize to go with her award: her choice of a Politics Plus mug or a Politics Plus T-shirt.  I’ll contact her shortly to find out which she wants and make arrangements to have it made and shipped to her.

Please join me in thanking her for her participation, encouraging her to keep coming, and praising her for her care and concern.

It’s an unusual day here in the CatBox.  WWWendy won’t be here to de-stink the rancid TomCat until midafternoon, so I’m posting today.  It’s also a Holy Day in the Church of the Ellipsoid Orb.  My Broncos are meditating with the Packers in Green Bay.  Time to get out the Vaseline.  May the Holy Orb bless your team, unless their fans wear fake cheese.  Tomorrow please expect no more than a Personal Update, and that probably after lunch.  I’m going to the medical appointment for my hiatal hernia.  Ellipsoid Orb Hugs!

From The New Yorker: In a shakeup that White House insiders said was a long time coming, one of the voices in Rudy Giuliani’s head has resigned.

The resignation, which was officially tendered on Saturday morning, seemed inevitable after the former New York mayor made an appearance on CNN Thursday evening in which two of the voices in his head appeared to be in open warfare with each other.

“When that happened, it was clear that Rudy’s head was not big enough for the both of them,” a White House insider said. “And Rudy has an extremely big head.”

In an official statement, Giuliani thanked the departing voice for its service, and said that he was confident that the four remaining voices in his head would work well together.

Dang, Andy! I hope it’s the voice that keeps parroting 9/11. RESIST!!

It’s that time of week again, so here are four fine video clips from Bill’s show last night.  Enjoy!

Monologue: Trump’s Treason Three-Way

The same thing happened to Trump when he was in college. Since someone pushed Trump’s penis into her hand, she hasn’t stopped laughing. The President of the Ukraine hasn’t stopped laughing yet either. Absent America’s racist history, I think Trudeau intended no affront.

I Don’t Know It For a Fact…I Just Know It’s True

It’s a tired day here at the CatBox.  My hiatal hernia has been giving me nasty heartburn.  Fortunately I see the doctor on Monday.  Tomorrow is a WWWendy day, but she won’t be here until mid-PM.  Her son is retuning to Spain, and she’s driving him to the airport in Seattle in the morning.  Therefore I’ll be in the saddle tomorrow, but not Monday.  Weekend Hugs! for all!

From Salon.com: [L]awyers for President Trump argue that the president is immune from all criminal investigations in a new federal lawsuit seeking to block New York prosecutors from obtaining his tax returns.

Trump sued his longtime accounting firm Mazars USA and Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance on Thursday, after Vance’s office subpoenaed the firm to demand eight years of the president’s personal and corporate tax returns.

Department of Justice guidelines say a president cannot be prosecuted while in office, as former special counsel Robert Mueller made clear. But Trump’s personal attorneys are now going well beyond that by arguing that he also cannot be “investigated … or otherwise subjected to the criminal process.”

I’d say their swastikas are showing! RESIST!!

Everyday Erinyes #184

Posted by at 7:25 am  Politics

Experts in autocracies have pointed out that it is, unfortunately, easy to slip into normalizing the tyrant, hence it is important to hang on to outrage. These incidents which seem to call for the efforts of the Greek Furies (Erinyes) to come and deal with them will, I hope, help with that. As a reminder, though no one really knows how many there were supposed to be, the three names we have are Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone. These roughly translate as “unceasing,” “grudging,” and “vengeful destruction.”

The Project on Government Oversight (POGO) is requesting personal reminiscences from citizens (and probably from anyone and anyone regarding United States National Forests Here’s the email explaining why:

This summer, the U.S. Forest Service proposed a rule change to how it plans and implements projects. The biggest part you need to know is that the proposed change essentially eliminates your ability to voice concerns over projects right in your backyard.

POGO is concerned that the proposed rule to eliminate public comment periods for some projects would erode transparency and accountability by significantly reducing public involvement in and environmental assessments of future projects in our national forests.

Nothing to do with the post. Just s mnemonic pun.

But this isn’t just about the environmental impacts on our national forests—this is about listening to the public and being transparent. That’s why we want you to tell us: why does public input matter to you? Do you have a special connection to our national forests?

In one case, a local community raised concerns over how a proposed project would affect the security of their private property by allowing trespassers on their land. Another raised concerns that a river dredging project would threaten the habitat of an endangered species.

Both of these concerns were originally overlooked by the Forest Service—without the public’s input, homeowners might have feared for their safety in their own backyards, or the U.S. might have lost a valuable species.

And these are just two examples of countless others. That’s why POGO must continue to fight for preserving public input—local communities often have specialized knowledge. That’s why we want to hear from you now: why should we continue to advocate for direct public input in projects like these?

I would say that it boggles my mind, or at least flabbers my gast, to think that the National Forest Service, which exists to manage public land (public, you know, belonging to the people) would even consider any policy change or rule change or any change at all without requesting public input. I would say that, except, you know, it’s this administration, and this administration might do anything (except govern).

The “Great Alkali Plain”

I personally have spent a lot of time in national forests and related public land, starting in childhood with the Stanislaus and Sierra National Forests, and then after leaving military service I have lived in Colorado, near the Rio Grande National Forest, and now near the Pike National Forest, and have spent happy time in both. But one memory in particular stands out for me.

When I was a young lieutenant in the Marine Corps I was transferred from MCRD San Diego to MCAS Cherry Point. My family then lived in the San Francisco Bay Area, so I went there first. I had decided to drive. It was July, and I didn’t want to go through extreme heat on the southernmost route, but I did want to see the Grand Canyon on the way. So I took what is now I-80 and made a right at Salt Lake City.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has called that area “the great alkali plain,” and it was a pretty good description. As a lover of forests, I found it bleak. But that all changed when I came to the Kaibab National Forest. This forest includes mostly parts of northern Arizona, but it does extend into Utah, and that is where I entered it.

I have only been there once, but I will not forget it. It was like being embraced by the forest and told by the trees that I was home. It was almost as if I had been holding my breath, and now could breathe again.

I am now old and decrepit, and never expect to get there again, but I cringe to think what could happen to this forest, or any forest, if the Forest Service is allowed to make major decisions, or any decisions, without public input. I would hope that Americans entering this or any other national forest could find the same refreshment I found for many generations to come.

Road in the Kaibab National Forest

If that sounds a little different in tone from how I generally write here, it’s because that is my comment which I have sent to POGO. But if the tone is different, the sentiment is real.

I’ve linked to their comment site a couple of times as POGO did in the quoted email. But here it is again. I strongly encourage anyone who has any memories to share them with POGO. If, like me, you can remember interactions with national forests of which you have forgotten the names (it’s not like there are only a few of them), here is a Wikipedia article with information on that. Or you can google (or DuckDuckGo) the names by state (And, if you don’t have any strong memories, you can still tell them why decisions made about public lands require public input, for heaven’s sake.

Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone, besides jogging our memories and helping us to share, I hope you will get on the the Forest Service like ugly on a naked mole rat. They cannot be allowed to do this.

The Furies and I will be back.

Climate activists are holding their annual Climate Change Forum.  This year it’s at Georgetown University.  Democratic candidates for President are keynote speakers.  Also today, students and their supporters all over the world are cutting class to protest for climate change.

0920Forum

MSNBC is hosting a televised climate change forum this week with 12 candidates running for president in 2020. The event is split across September 19 and September 20 and will cap the network’s “Climate in Crisis” series, a week of dedicated programming on climate change. MSNBC hosts Ali Velshi and Chris Hayes will be questioning the contenders and fielding questions from young voters in the audience.

The forum will be held at Georgetown University and is also sponsored by Our Daily Planet and New York magazine. It comes after CNN held an unprecedented seven-hour climate change town hall with 2020 Democratic presidential contenders earlier this month…

…Notably, five prominent Democratic candidates will be absent from the MSNBC forum: former Vice President Joe Biden, Sen. Kamala Harris, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, and former Rep. Beto O’Rourke…

I think Liz made a big mistake by opting out.

Here is the complete video for Day 1 and Day 2.  Overall, I think it will be about eighteen hours total, and I suggest that you skip around and watch what interests you.

This is still live and I have not had time to watch it, yet.  On to the protests.

0920Strike

Tens of thousands of high school students concerned about climate change planned to let their feet do the talking Friday in a nationwide walkout of classes to join Global Climate Strike marches.

Organizers said protesters would be turning out in 156 countries from such disparate locations as Nepal, Senegal, Quebec, Rome, Kyrgyzstan, Sweden, Bolivia and Peru…

…‘It’s our future that’s at stake’: US students plan to skip school Friday to fight climate ’emergency’ The days of protest are an effort to coordinate different groups for different actions in different countries. Supporters who were backing The Global Climate Strike on Friday planned to join Earth Strike, another worldwide effort, in one week.

The face of the worldwide effort is Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, 16, who came to New York on a solar-powered sailboat to attend the strike in New York City and then the summit.

While Thunberg is not the organizer, she is a major motivating force. She gave the global movement a push starting in August 2018 when she began skipping school on Fridays to stand outside the Swedish parliament holding a sign protesting inaction on climate change…
