Rudy Toast

I remember that, when he ran for the Republican Residential nomination in 2008, every other word he said was 911, so people labeled him Rudy 911.  Now we need to change that name to Rudy Toast, because the more we learn about his dealings, both personal and on behalf of his Fuhrer, the more he becomes toast.

1015Giuliani

President Donald Trump’s personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani, was paid $500,000 for work he did for a company co-founded by the Ukrainian-American businessman arrested last week on campaign finance charges, Giuliani told Reuters on Monday.

The businessman, Lev Parnas, is a close associate of Giuliani and was involved in his effort to investigate Trump’s political rival, former Vice President Joe Biden, who is a leading contender for the 2020 Democratic Party nomination.

Giuliani said Parnas’ company, Boca Raton-based Fraud Guarantee, whose website says it aims to help clients “reduce and mitigate fraud”, engaged Giuliani Partners, a management and security consulting firm, around August 2018. Giuliani said he was hired to consult on Fraud Guarantee’s technologies and provide legal advice on regulatory issues.

Federal prosecutors are “examining Giuliani’s interactions” with Parnas and another Giuliani associate, Igor Fruman, who was also indicted on campaign finance charges, a law enforcement source told Reuters on Sunday…  [emphasis added]

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.  Rachel Maddow covered the story in depth.

Giuliani Role In President Donald Trump Ukraine Scheme Develops New Twists

In my opinion, Rudy had better flip and testify against Trump, Pence, Barrf, Pompeo and a bunch more to minimize the length of his own sentence.

It’s a very busy day, here at the CatBox.  First I overslept an hour.  Then I had to prepare and send my grocery order to Store to Door.  Then I had to prepare our Fantasy Football Report and set my lineup.  Then I did my daily research.  Now I’m writing.  This evening  WWWendy comes to de-stink the foul TomCat.  After so many days, I’m… quite ripe.  Tomorrow please expect no more than a Personal Update.  I have another appointment with Megan, my PCP, about my gut trouble.  Hectic hugs to all.

From NY Times: The creator of a gruesome video that showed a fake President Trump killing journalists and political opponents and that was played at a meeting of a pro-Trump group over the weekend is part of a loose network of right-wing provocateurs with a direct line to the White House.

The unidentified creator of the video operates under the name of “The GeekzTeam” and has proclaimed on Twitter to be a “red blooded American with ZERO tolerance for the liberal agenda.” Like many in the online group, the person specializes in creating pro-Trump internet content, often by remixing the president’s image into clips from popular movies and television shows.

Another of the provocateurs, Logan Cook, who often has posted the videos on MemeWorld, his website, participated in a social media summit at the White House in July and took his children to meet the president in the Oval Office, accompanied by Dan Scavino, the White House social media director.

No wonder the Fuhrer loves it so much! RESIST!!

Whose Day Is It, Really?

In school we learned that history was the history of white colonialism, and that in 1492, Columbus discovered America.  We were also taught that the indigenous people were called Indians, because they did not have the decency to be living in India, where Columbus thought he was at the time.  Worse yet, they attacked us, because they were too impatient to wait for us to complete the genocide before civilizing them.  Ever since, we have celebrated Columbus Day on this date (or a close Monday), but whose day is it, really?

1014ColumbusDay

On Monday [today] in the nation’s capital, there is no Columbus Day. The D.C. Council voted to replace it with Indigenous Peoples’ Day in a temporary move that it hopes to make permanent. Several other places across the United States have also made the switch in a growing movement to end the celebration of the Italian explorer in favor of honoring Indigenous communities and their resiliency in the face of violence by European explorers like Christopher Columbus.

Baley Champagne is responsible for that change in her home state of Louisiana. The tribal citizen of the United Houma Nation petitioned the governor, John Bel Edwards, to change the day. He did, along with several other states this year.

“It’s become a trend,” Champagne said. “It’s about celebrating people instead of thinking about somebody who actually caused genocide on a population or tried to cause the genocide of an entire population. By bringing Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we’re bringing awareness that we’re not going to allow someone like that to be glorified into a hero, because of the hurt that he caused to Indigenous people of America.”…  [emphasis added]

I could not agree more.  I fully support the switch to Indigenous People’s Day.  For more information, click here.

The “Three R’s” are Reduce, Reuse and Recycle – only missing Reduce.  But since I’ve been tied up this weekend enjoying time with my family (it’s pretty much down to Weddings and Funerals to get everyone together), I’m going to reuse/recycle last year’s Autumnal Splendor post.

Road in Vilnius Lithuania

Let’s start with the science story behind fall’s phantasmagorical foliage fling. (You guys will have the science of this down pat … if you don’t already!)

Once a new leaf is finally fully formed sometime in June, the next thing a tree spends its energy on is preparing the following year’s leaf buds. The job of the leaves currently in place is to create and store food as carbohydrates/sugars necessary for that new leaf bud. And unlike us, trees are unique in that they’re able to manufacture their own food/energy, courtesy of photosynthesis.

Chlorophyll is the green pigmented chemical in leaves that uses the energy provided by the sun during the process of photosynthesis to convert water taken up by the roots and carbon dioxide taken from the air into sugars and starches – nutrients that the tree needs for growth – while giving off oxygen as a by-product.

But the chlorophyll that gives trees their green of summer is not the only color pigment always present in leaves. Working just as hard in the leaves are the carotenoids (carotene and xanthophyll). These pigments are important in capturing light energy needed in the process of photosynthesis. It’s just that the carotenoids are masked by the overpowering green of the chlorophyll during the summer months.

But with the coming of autumn, as daylight hours shorten and temperatures drop, cells near the juncture of the leaf and its stem start to divide very rapidly. This creates what is called an abscission layer. This corky abscission layer of cells is the site where the leaf will eventually break from the tree and flutter to the ground. That corky layer then serves to protect the branch through winter after the leaf leaves.

The rapid growth of that corky layer begins to physically block transport of nutrients needed by the leaf to manufacture the carbohydrates. Consequently the photosynthesis that’s been creating chlorophyll (which is not a very stable chemical and has been rapidly breaking down and then replaced throughout the summer) ceases.

Once the chlorophyll is gone, the carotene and xanthophyll chemical pigments that have been present all summer long now take center stage.

These carotenoids (carotene and xanthophyll) give their characteristic orange and yellow colors to not just leaves, but also to carrots, corn, canaries, and daffodils – as well as egg yolks, rutabagas, buttercups, and bananas. And they account as the predominant color in about 15-30% of our tree species – typically they’re found in the hardwood species of hickories, ash, maple, yellow poplar, aspen, birch, black cherry, sycamore, cottonwood, sassafras, and alder.

Look close – there are two girls standing in the Halland Forest, Sweden at the demarcation between the forest and the pines.

The third class of color chemicals that leaves have (after chlorophyll and the carotenoids) are the reds and purples of anthocyanin. But unlike the other two classes, anthocyanin has not been present in the leaves the whole summer. The anthocyanins are created brand new – just for autumn’s fall foliage!

Why the tree would expend energy, when it’s shutting down for the winter, for the creation of a new product is not understood. But we do know the brighter the sunlight during this period, the greater the production of anthocyanins – and the more brilliant the resulting reds and purples. This direct proportion of redness to sunlight exposure explains why the periphery of hardwood trees are bright red, while the foliage lower down and inside are the more typical oranges and yellows.

Anthocyanins also account for the coloring of cranberries, red apples, blueberries, cherries, strawberries, and plums. They are present in only about 10% of hardwood species – mainly maples, sourwood, sweetgums, dogwoods, tupelos, cherry trees and persimmons.

But in a few lucky areas — most famously New England — up to 70% of tree species are the type that produce the anthocyanin pigment. That high concentration of a single color (the reds of anthocyanin) accounts for the intense but relatively brief autumnal color display in New England. Whereas in most other areas that have a higher mix of tree varieties the colors may not be as intense, but the season lasts longer.

Of course, the reds of fall are not only in New England – but all over the world

You can see where your particularly area is in relation to reaching Peak Color with this interactive map:

And of course to many of us, fall means FOOTBALL!  (Even though my Chiefs lost … AGAIN!)  But few places enjoy such a spectacular autumnal setting as Boulder, Colorado …

I’ll see you again next year about this time.

And hopefully with some NEW material!  (Especially since I have dozens and dozens of gorgeous Autumn photos.  Time was tight today – but time with family was splendid!)

Pro Life?

Several years ago, I was sitting on a MAX train, when a group of Republican pseudo-Christians (the polar opposite of authentic Christians) approached me.  I could tell, because they wore identical IXTHUS buttons and vacant, rigid smiles.  One asked me, “Are you pro-life?”  I  played along, “Why yes I am.”  She replied, “That’s wonderful.  We are too!”  I answered, “Great!  How long have you been against capital punishment?”  Her countenance dropped, “But we’re FOR the death penalty!”  I said, “Then, if I understand you correctly, you’re telling me you’re pro-death!” Stunned they walked away.   Pseudo-Christians today are just as hypocritical.

1013Atrocities

You say that you’re pro-life.

You let me know in hashtags and bumper stickers and t-shirts and memes and march photos and sermons and high horse sanctimony.

You treasure and revere and defend life.

Kurds are lives you know.

They’re actual living, breathing human beings. (Well, many more of them were a week ago.)

They are lives filled with learning to walk and first days of school and running in the yard and having a dog and falling in love and playing instruments and exploring passions and getting married and growing old.

Kurdish people are parents and children and best friends and first grade teachers and favorite aunts; lives of made of loving, laughing, singing, learning, growing—all the things you believe life here is made of, all the life you say you can’t abide the disruption of, all the life you tell me you’re for,

Kurds are lives, and those lies are ending prematurely, violently, senselessly right now.

As you read these very words, crowds are scattering, people are screaming, ammunition is invading bodies, human beings are falling to the ground, and hearts are ceasing to beat—and those parents, children, best friends, first grade teachers, and favorite aunts are dying…  [emphasis added]

Resident Donald Trump is responsible for these deaths.  Republican Politicians claim to oppose this, but they refuse to lift a hand in the Senate to stop it.  That means that they are pro-death, as is anyone that supports them or votes Republican.

It’s that time of week again, so here are four fine video clips from Bill’s show last night.  Enjoy!

Monologue: Full Stonewall

I feel sorry for the people in California. What about disabled people like me, who need to run O2 concentrators or more critical medical equipment? Actually Kurds did help us in WW2. Kurds fought under several allied flags in Russia, Greece and Albania! Dang Bill!  Karen Pence did that?!!?

I remember him from the old days. He was the original radio shock jock, whose crude, in your face style has been copied by innumerable Republican shock jocks, who were and are both deranged and evil.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar

I like Amy more than some, but I don’t think she has a snowball’s chance in hell to get the nomination.
