From The New Yorker: After learning that two of Rudy Giuliani’s associates had been charged with federal campaign-finance crimes, millions of Americans expressed their stunned disbelief that Giuliani had associates.

“By ‘associates,’ do they mean people who actually associate with Giuliani?” Carol Foyler, who lives in St. Louis, said. “This whole story doesn’t add up.”

“I read that these quote-unquote associates of Giuliani’s were actually business associates,” Tracy Klugian, of Butte, Montana, said. “If that means he was paying them a lot of money to associate with him, that could explain everything.”

Nope! Andy, I’m not buying it. I’m not sure what those thugs are. They may be Putin associates working to keep Rudy and his Fuhrer in line! RESIST!!

Everyday Erinyes #187

Posted by at 8:56 am  Politics

Experts in autocracies have pointed out that it is, unfortunately, easy to slip into normalizing the tyrant, hence it is important to hang on to outrage. These incidents which seem to call for the efforts of the Greek Furies (Erinyes) to come and deal with them will, I hope, help with that. As a reminder, though no one really knows how many there were supposed to be, the three names we have are Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone. These roughly translate as “unceasing,” “grudging,” and “vengeful destruction.”

So, the House of Representatives is full-on investigating Donald John Trump with the intent of impeachment. If you, or someone you know, hasn’t noticed, that’s because Trump is stonewalling on allowing either documents or testimony to be provided to the committees concerned (in itself an impeachable offense, of course. All this is quite frustrating. It won’t, of course, derail the investigation, but it may – it is intended to – delay it substantially So when I found this Creative Commons article which discusses the effect of delay, along with other factors, I thought it was well worth sharing.

There are many who are clamoring for immediate, or at least speedy, results. My take is that, to be blunt, if there may end up being face-eating leopards around, we should at the very least be aware that we also have faces which could be eaten.

Investigations usually hurt a president’s public reputation – but Trump isn’t usual

Douglas L. Kriner, Cornell University and Eric Schickler, University of California, Berkeley

Will the House impeachment inquiry of President Donald Trump ultimately have any effect?

Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi had long resisted calls for impeachment, arguing that it is “just not worth it.” However, the Trump administration’s initial refusal to release to Congress documents concerning the intelligence community whistleblower’s complaint about the administration’s treatment of Ukraine encouraged the Speaker to cross that line.

We have explored the relationship between hearings into alleged executive branch misconduct and public opinion in our 2016 book, “Investigating the President: Congressional Checks on Presidential Power.”

Investigations often damage a president’s reputation in the public eye – but that may not matter to a historically unpopular president like Trump.

A check on the presidency

The power to oversee the executive branch is among Congress’ most important powers. Investigations have historically afforded Congress a meaningful check on an increasingly powerful presidency.

Perhaps the most important way that investigations check presidential power is by lowering public support for the president. By eroding the president’s reserve of political capital, investigators can change how politicians behave, both in Congress and in the White House.

This can create momentum for new legislation, encourage presidential concessions, or simply weaken the president’s political position with broad consequences.

In our book, we built a comprehensive data set of all congressional investigations of the executive branch from 1898 through 2014.

We then merged it with presidential approval data, which first became regularly available in 1953, to see how investigations affected approval ratings from Eisenhower to Obama.

Even after statistically accounting for the possibility that low approval ratings might also encourage Congress to investigate an administration more aggressively, we found that investigations systematically eroded public support for the president.

Historically, every 20 additional days of investigative hearings cost the president roughly 2.5% in the polls.

So a short-term investigation is survivable. But a long-term investigation could seriously diminish the president’s political capital and even threaten his or his party’s electoral fortunes.

How Trump is different

Will the current impeachment inquiry have the same corrosive effect on support for President Trump? The allegations of abuse of power are more serious than those driving many of the investigations in our historical data.

However, there are reasons to believe that support for Trump may be more resilient.

President Trump’s approval rating has been remarkably stable over the past three years. This suggests to us that the power of events to move public opinion has diminished substantially.

President Trump has had both a lower ceiling -– his first term approval ratings were historically low, given the strength of the economy – and a higher floor than his predecessors.

What’s more, partisan lines have hardened to an extent that is arguably unparalleled in the past century.

Here’s how that partisanship is relevant: There is nothing unusual about the members of a president’s party defending him in the face of accusations of wrongdoing. But in past cases, there generally was a reasonably sized faction of members of the same party in Congress who were willing to take on the president when his administration’s actions were particularly egregious.

In today’s intensely polarized Congress, it is unlikely that there is any revelation that would persuade more than a small handful of Republicans to turn on President Trump. Absent this, public opinion is unlikely to move.

At the same time, many congressional Republicans are standing by Trump because they believe that is what their voters want. Staunchly partisan voters encourage elites to toe the party line and use more inflammatory language. That, in turn, only reinforces voters’ inclination to stick with their party.

Checks and balances

Investigations offer Congress a tool to push back against presidential power when it cannot legislate.

However, for investigations to succeed and produce meaningful political or policy change, they usually must be able to shine a light on administration misdeeds and move the needle of public opinion. To do so, investigators must have access to the information they require.

The Trump administration has refused to cooperate with congressional subpoenas and requests for information, and continues to receive the unconditional support of most Republicans for the president. That suggests that the impeachment inquiry, like other investigative efforts of the 116th Congress, faces severe obstacles that earlier investigations had not confronted.

The kinds of revelations that in the past surely would have been sufficient to move the public and elected officials may no longer be sufficient. The question is whether the revelations in Trump’s case will surpass the barriers imposed by today’s intensely polarized politics.

Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone, you probably know even better than we do that every enterprise which involves human beings is more or less a crap shoot. An action designed to accomplish one goal can have that effect, or it can have the opposite effect, or it can just fizzle. I think we can be pretty sure that House Democrats, particularly our Democratic leadership, are considering all of the factors above. We do not even have the opportunity of jury selection. The jury for this trial is the United States Senate, and it’s already been selected. There have been a few hopeful signs, but there are no guarantees. And we must have hard evidence.

Flush Fakebook!

Posted by at 10:42 am  Politics

I’ve been encouraging folks to flush Facebook for a long time.  At first I was appalled that so many good progressive political blogs died, because their authors were sucked into Facebook’s maw of mindless pap.  They started to ignore their blogs, and finally stopped writing.  Then it was because the majority of content from there seemed pro-Republican.  And most recently it was because Facebook worked hand in hand with Russia to help Trump steal the 2016 election.  But now, it’s so extreme that I’ve decided to call them Fakebook from now on.  Here’s why.

1011Fakebook

President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign is running a false ad about former Vice President Joe Biden on Facebook, and there’s nothing the company is going to do about it. It doesn’t bode well for what’s to come in 2020 and social media platforms’ willingness to act on the spread of misinformation.

The Trump campaign has released a 30-second video ad accusing the former vice president of promising Ukraine money for firing a prosecutor investigating a company with ties to Biden’s son, Hunter Biden — essentially, the false conspiracy at the center of the impeachment inquiry President Trump is now facing. CNN refused to air the ad because there is no evidence for the claims it is making. But not Facebook — or multiple other tech platforms and media outlets like YouTube, Twitter, MSNBC, and Fox, for that matter. Instead, the Menlo Park, California-based company is going to let it stay — and rack up millions of views in the process.

The Biden campaign asked Facebook to take the ad down, but the platform said it’s a no-go. The New York Times first obtained a letter from Facebook to Biden’s camp on Tuesday responding to its request to remove the video, explaining that despite its false claims, it doesn’t actually violate any of Facebook’s policies.

“Our approach is grounded in Facebook’s fundamental belief in free expression, respect for the democratic process, and the belief that, in mature democracies with a free press, political speech is already arguably the most scrutinized speech there is,” Facebook’s head of global elections policy, Katie Harbath, wrote in the letter…   [emphasis added]

To be fair, lets examine the mindset of the Fakebook exec that wrote the letter.  Before becoming Fakebook’s Associate Manager for Policy, according to the Washington Post, she was Chief Digital Stratevest for the National Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee, Deputy eCampaign Director Rudy Giuliani for President, and Deputy Director of eCommunications at the Republican National Committee.  Although her view might be jist a little biased, I must admit that what she said about Fakebook’s policy is true. But just last month, it would have been a lie.

According to the Guardian, Facebook just changed their policy to allow Trump’s Fake news.

To bring this about Trump and Fuckerberg got together and made a deal.  Chris Hayes has that story.

Facebook: President Donald Trump Can Lie All He Wants

And why would Fuckerberg sell out America for the Republican Reich?  Here are the three reasons.

It’s another busy day here at the CatBox.  WWWendy was a bit late last night, and we had extra stuff to do in preparation for her trip, so I made it to bed about three hours after my normal time, so I slept in an extra hour this morning.  She’s stopping by on the way to the airport to drop off my packages that she forgot to bring yesterday.  She just came and went.  She’ll be gone until Tuesday.  I’ve noticed that m heartburn seems to have gotten worse since I started omeprazole and I’ve also had persistent Republicosis and nausea.  I looked up side-effects, and there they were.  I discontinued taking it with last night’s dose.  I don’t know about the Republicosis, but the nausea is gone, and the heart burn is not as bad as it was yesterday.  Don’t you hate going to doctor to get sicker?  TGIF!!

From The New Yorker: A nonpartisan study published by the University of Minnesota has found that the nation could save “untold millions” of taxpayer dollars by impeaching Mike Pence at the same time as Donald J. Trump.

The study, entitled “Operation bogo,” makes a compelling case for commencing an impeachment inquiry into Pence “as soon as possible,” its author, Davis Logsdon, said on Thursday.

“The cost of impeaching Trump alone or Trump and Pence together is virtually identical,” Logsdon, an economics professor, said. “This is all about economy of scale.”

“Taxpayers are already paying Adam Schiff to investigate Trump,” he added. “I’m fairly sure Schiff could be persuaded to throw in Pence for free.”

When it comes time to publish articles of impeachment against Trump, Logsdon noted, “It would cost almost nothing in terms of paper or ink cartridges to add the words ‘and Pence, too.’ ”

Trump Defies Congress

Posted by at 9:52 am  Politics
Oct 092019

It was clear to me long ago, but now it must be clear to virtually everyone, that Resident Donald Trump had declared war on the Congress of the United States.   He is defying Congress and refusing to acknowledge or accede to their First Amendment right to conduct an impeachment inquiry into his many high crimes and misdemeanors.

The White House refused Tuesday to turn over internal documents regarding Ukraine being sought by House Democrats as the Trump administration dug in against their impeachment inquiry.

In a defiant letter that echoed the president’s recent impeachment messaging — accusing Democrats of violating the Constitution and civil liberties and attempting to overturn the results of the 2016 election — the White House said it would not comply with the request from House Democrats because they were conducting an invalid investigation…

…The move was the latest demonstration of a White House strategy of almost-universal resistance taking shape in its efforts to stymie the Democratic investigation into whether President Donald Trump used the power of his office to pressure Ukraine to investigate 2020 rival Joe Biden…

Click through for the Democratic response and a deeper explanation.

Essentially Trump’s argument is he and everyone acting under his orders are above the law.  Both Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O’Donnell explained this in more depth.

Trump Showing Desperation In Defying Impeachment Inquiry

Presidents do need to cooperate with impeachment proceedings. However, he is not and never has been a President. He’s a Resident. Moreover, Trump is the Fuhrer of the Republican Reich.

Rpts: Official Told Whistleblower Trump’s Ukraine Call Was “Crazy”

Sondland, an Oregon billionaire and hotelier, bought his appointment and is a devoted follower of Ayn Rand. I have no doubt that he got his instructions from his Fuhrer.  He should be charged for his role in the crime.

To combat this, the Democrats need to proceed in two ways.  First, they need to charge the witnesses who refuse to appear with crimes.  Second, they need to document and include all the instances of Trump’s criminal obstruction into a separate Article of Impeachment.
