From YouTube (MSNBC Channel): Republicans Block FEC Probe Of NRA’s Russia Money And President Donald Trump

Republicans are doing everything possible to throttle every investigation into everything. Why? It’s because they know that, if a crime exists, they’re guilty. Start with treason and work down from there. RESIST!!

From YouTube (J Street Channel): Rise to the Moment

I thoroughly support this organization. J Street is what AIPUKE could have been, if their leaders truly cared for peace in Israel and the well-being of Jews and others there, instead of pushing the policies of Republican Supply-side pseudo-Christians (the polar opposite of real authentic Christians).  RESIST!!

From The New Yorker: After rebuffing Donald J. Trump’s hypothetical proposal to purchase Greenland, the government of Denmark has announced that it would be interested in buying the United States instead.

“As we have stated, Greenland is not for sale,” a spokesperson for the Danish government said on Friday. “We have noted, however, that during the Trump regime pretty much everything in the United States, including its government, has most definitely been for sale.”

“Denmark would be interested in purchasing the United States in its entirety, with the exception of its government,” the spokesperson added.

Dang, Andy. They should wait. If Russia is successful in stealing the White House again in 2020 for the Putin’s Pee-pee Pervert, the value of the nation will drop to below fifty cents. RESIST!!

Everyday Erinyes #179

Posted by at 9:17 am  Politics
Aug 172019

Experts in autocracies have pointed out that it is, unfortunately, easy to slip into normalizing the tyrant, hence it is important to hang on to outrage. These incidents which seem to call for the efforts of the Greek Furies (Erinyes) to come and deal with them will, I hope, help with that. As a reminder, though no one really knows how many there were supposed to be, the three names we have are Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone. These roughly translate as “unceasing,” “grudging,” and “vengeful destruction.”

I am not an expert on the global economy. But, fortunately, I know people who are. So when I received this email from one of them, I sat up and took notice. I did not myself live through the Great Depression, and it’s not a time in history I have studied extensively, but I am aware that it was not confined to the United States, but, rather, was worldwide. I also realize that the conditions it created were largely responsible for World War II. That involves far more complexity than I want to go into, but I will just mention that hate and fear also played a role (and were certainly not alleviated by the Depression), and I don’t need to tell anyone here that we have those, both here and around the world, right now.

So here’s the basic fact that is so startling that we all need to look at it and learn about what it means:

A Danish bank is offering mortgages with negative interest rates

Excuse me? Negative interest rates? What does that even mean?

As reported by the Guardian and others, Jyske Bank – Denmark’s third-largest bank – said this week that customers would now be able to take out a 10-year fixed-rate mortgage with an interest rate of -0.5%, meaning customers can actually pay back less than the amount they borrowed.

To put the -0.5% rate in simple terms: If you bought a house for $1 million and paid off your mortgage in full in 10 years, you would pay the bank back only $995,000.

More specifically,

That doesn’t exactly sound like a stellar business plan, does it? However …

If the alternative is that the bank doesn’t gain market share, or their lending book dwindles, possibly through a generalised lack of consumer confidence, then it might be that the bank is better off locking in a small loss now, rather than a bigger loss later. Plus there’ll probably be some fees associated with the lending, so they can cover themselves to a degree.

Financial markets are in a volatile, uncertain spot right now. Factors include the US-China trade war, Brexit, problems in Hong Kong, and a whole heap more including a generalised economic slowdown across the world – and particularly in Europe. Some – not all – investors fear a substantial crash in the near future.

So some banks are willing to lend money at negative rates, accepting a small loss rather than risking a bigger loss by failing to lend money at higher rates later on that customers cannot meet. Essentially, lock in your customers now and help them ride out any coming storm.

“Any coming storm.” What kind of storm would that be, that would induce a hard-headed financial institution to accept a cut amounting to a loss of income stream, and commit to it for ten years?

According to [Mikkel] Høegh, institutions in Denmark are worried that the dollar’s strength won’t last. In a slide, the bond’s value falls in local currency and could end up posting a greater loss than the 0.5% that backing a mortgage costs. (emphasis mine)

Gee – what could have cause bankers concern about the future strength of the US dollar? Hmmm. I have no doubt anyone here could supply an answer to that.

But mortgage interest rates affect people who are getting new fixed rate mortgages, or people who have adjustable rate mortgages. That doesn’t describe me. What effect would it have on me personally, if this trend comes to where I live?

It would become harder – or, at least, expensive – to save money. Banks would be charging negative rates on deposits, meaning that consumers would be paying the bank for opportunity to squirrel away money.

Bank customers could turn to more risky methods of stashing money, [Danielle] Hale said, such as holding on to actual cash or putting it into riskier investments. This could also have ripple effects across people’s financial lives.

Stashing money in mattresses? Where have I heard that before?

I don’t want to panic, and I don’t want anyone here to panic, just to take this seriously. Negative interest rates are not coming to the United States tomorrow, or even next week. This development in Denmark did not come out of thin air. It took seven years from the time that Denmark’s central bank lowered its interest rates to zero to get to this point, although certificate of deposits began carrying negative yields soon after. Current rates for fixed thirty-year mortgages in the United States are running around 3.6%. We’re not there yet.

However, we don’t need to go all the way to negative interest rates to see ill effects for ordinary people, people who cannot afford to lose much if anything.

As for people living on their savings? Good luck. You’re going to need it.

Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone, I honestly don’t know enough to tell you what to do about this, or even if there is anything you can do. I am pretty confident that, if there is to be any kind of turnaround, it will not come from any government or governments run by Republicans. So maybe the best thing you can do is to get out the vote, world wide, to get progressives elected to as many offices as possible in as many nations as possible. Vote blue, no matter who!

The Furies and I will be back.

Greenland Is Not Nambia

Do you remember Nambia? According to the Republican Reich, Africa is full of shithole countries, so when their Fuhrer, Resident Donald Trump, needed a good nation on that continent, he praised Nambia, a country that does not exist.  Now, someone suggested to the Fuhrer that he can buy a country full of white people, Greenland.  As a Republican, he’s do stupid that he actually believed it.

0816trump-greenland

President Donald Trump is reportedly very interested in buying Greenland from the Danish government — and Copenhagen-based newspaper Berlingske is having a field day mocking him over it.

In the wake of a Wall Street Journal report about the president instructing his advisers to come up with a way to buy Greenland from Denmark, the Danish publication has written multiple articles deriding the president for believing its government will be eager to hand him such a massive piece of territory.

One piece in Berlingske, for example, talked with multiple experts about the feasibility of buying Greenland and was headlined, “Eksperter om Trumps forslag: Han skyder sig selv i foden,” which roughly translates to, “Experts on Trump’s proposal: He shoots himself in the foot.”

The paper’s leading editorial of the day, meanwhile, is titled “Nej, Donald Trump kan ikke bare købe Grønland, men…” — or “No, Donald Trump can’t just buy Greenland, but…” — and it included references to Trump’s “circus” presidency…

Rachel Maddow enjoyed a bit of tongue in cheek.

I don’t feel sorry for the ridicule. Making Trump look idiotic is like making the Pope look Catholic.

I’m running late, as I overslept and had several chores  to complete. Next week will be so busy that I will probably have only a Personal Update Monday though Wednesday.  Monday is a WWWendy day, a day late, and we have lots to do.  Tuesday I have an Oncologist appointment to interpret my Cat Scan.  Wednesday I have a power chair repairman coming.  I suspect a bad wheel bearing as my chair screeches whenever I’m on the move.  TGIF Hugs!

Short Takes:

From YouTube (MSNBC Channel): Donald Trump Nominates Advocate Of ‘Ethnonationalism’ For Judgeship

How did Bought Bitch Moscow Mitch know to hold all those judgeships open for Trump, when most thought Hillary would cream Trump. Bought Bitch Moscow Mitch must have already known Putin was stealing the government for the Republican Reich. Can anyone guess which ethnic group that Republican racist Menashi favors? RESIST!!

From YouTube (Parody Project Channel): HALLELUJAH FOR THE NRA!

Don retreaded this, but with Republican Ammosexual terrorists on a killing spree, he could not have picked a more appropriate time to bring it back. RESIST!!

From Daily Kos: Sen. Susan Collins took time out of her busy schedule of being extremely disappointedthat people expect her to do something about gun violence to attend a fundraiser on Friday. A fundraiser on her behalf. Held by Leonard Leo, Donald Trump’s “judge whisperer.”

Remember all that hand-wringing we saw from Collins last fall over her vote for Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court? It was kabuki. The fix had been in for a long time, with Collins reportedly giving Mitch McConnell the green light for her vote on this nomination before it happened. Now that she’s hobnobbing with Federalist Society executive vice president Leonard Leo—and he’s raising buckets of money for her—the quid pro quo is staring us in the face.

She’s already received the maximum contribution from Leo, $2,800. So now he’s opened the doors of his $4 million mansion for Collins and all his rich friends—who got a big tax break thanks to Collins’ vote on that Trump tax scam—to say thanks. Leo has become increasingly high-profile since Trump got installed in the Oval Office, even taking a leave from his job at the Federalist Society to specifically get Kavanaugh on the court. He has unprecedented sway and say over Trump in judicial nominations, ensuring that the courts get packed with young judges who have extreme anti-abortion, anti-LGBTQ rights, and anti-voting rights records.

There are two kinds of Republicans in office: open goose-steppers and secret goose-steppers. RESIST!!

There’ll be no “Fun” posted this week as I’m having Out-Patient Surgery this morning for a leg abscess.

On Saturday, July 27th I leaned over while in my desk chair to get something that was clearly out of my reach because the chair tipped over and I landed on the handle of an antique iron.

Before electricity, they used solid iron irons that you had to heat on the stove – and those suckers are heavy.

I developed a giant goose-egg hematoma that became Red, Hot, Swollen & Tender (RHST), so I went to my PCP’s Walk-In clinic on Friday, August 2nd. The Nurse Practitioner put me on Keflex, but since I didn’t see much progress, I went to the Wound Care Clinic this Wednesday.

The Nurse Practitioner (who I saw for my 36 days of antibiotics for my cat-bite cellulitis – and is excellent) confirmed my concern: abscess.

But I was shocked that the Wound Care Clinic does not drain abscesses.

So I had an Ultra-Sound done yesterday to be sure it’s walled off (it is), and will see the general surgeon this morning for a probable Incision & Drainage (I & D).

But I’ll share a cute cat Tweet:

I’m pretty tired out, because WWWendy got caught in traffic and was 45 minutes.  We had extra work to do, because she and her girlfriends are committing wanton debauchery in a German Village this weekend so my next shower day won’t be until Monday.  Today is a grocery delivery day.  BTW, I fixed the Mouse.  I had to move the wireless receiver from the back of the computer to a USB port on my hub near the front.

About Mewe:

Several of our Care2 Refugee friends recommended a site called Mewe.  Some started a group there called Care2share.  So far, it’s almost all petitions, but I asked the group owned if she would like us to add PP articles to the site.  I recommend checking out both the site and the group.

Short Takes:

From YouTube (MSNBC Channel): Mitch McConnell At Nexus Of Increased Russian Leverage On U.S. (29 min.)

Bought Bitch Moscow Mitch is the best thing for Russian dominance and the worst thing for US national security since Resident Drumpfenfarten. Putin (R-RU) loves his Republican Reich. Every Republican in office is one Republican too many! RESIST!!

From Newsweek: A man, allegedly a correctional officer, drove a pickup truck into a group of Jewish peaceful demonstrators protesting outside the Wyatt Detention Center in Rhode Island on Wednesday night.

Hundreds of Jewish protesters, mostly members of Never Again Action, a group that advocates for the rights of migrants detained by ICE, gathered outside the Donald W. Wyatt Detention facility in Central Falls on Wednesday evening. The protesters stood blocking the entrance of the facility, linking arms while chanting for the abolition of ICE and the end to America’s harsh immigration policies.

At around 10 p.m. local time, a dark-colored pickup truck drove slowly up to a group of roughly 40-50 protesters blocking the entrance to the location’s parking lot, before driving straight through the crowd, according to a video uploaded to Twitter.

Amy Anthony, one of the protest’s organizers, told Newsweek that the group has identified the man driving the truck as a correctional officer. “We have confirmed that the person driving the truck is a correctional officer who works for the detention facility,” she said. “The driver was in his uniform when he hit the protestors. His rank and name were embroidered on his shirt and he was wearing a badge at the time.”

Was he a lone Republican or was he under orders from the Republican Reich? RESIST!!

From Vanity Fair: John Hickenlooper’s presidential campaign has been on death’s doorstep for weeks. He’s been nonexistent in the polls; he was mistaken for a reporter upon arriving at the first presidential debate in June; and in July, his own staff staged an intervention, urging him to drop his bid to “pursue other opportunities.” Now, the former Colorado governor appears ready to heed their advice. The Associated Press reports that Hickenlooper will announce his withdrawal on Thursday, making him the latest 2020 Democrat to exit the crowded primary field. His announcement will come amid speculation that he is weighing a Senate run against vulnerable Colorado Republican Cory Gardner, but a Hickenlooper campaign source told Politico he will not address that possibility.

From what I’ve seen of him, I’m not favorably Impressed, but I trust he has some god qualities.  If the choice is he or Trump-endorser Corey Gardner for a Senate seat, the worst Democrat is infinitely better than the best Republican. Vote Blue, no matter who! RESIST!!

Here is the one hundred sixty-fifth article in our Republicans on Parade series, featuring individuals who personify what the Republican Party has become. Today’s winner is Trump’s Republican Acting Director of Citizenship and Immigration Services, Ken Cuccinelli. He is so honored for rewriting Emma Lazarus’ poem about Lady Liberty, converting it to racist Republican propaganda.

0814Statue-Liberty-Crying

It’s practically a parody of Trumpian ignorance and bigotry: Ken Cuccinelli, the acting director of US Citizenship and Immigration Services, offering a rewrite of the famous Emma Lazarus poem inscribed on the Statue of Liberty.

Instead of reading “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,” Cuccinelli suggested–in answer to a reporter’s question about whether he agreed with Lazarus’s poem–that maybe it should say, “Give me your tired and your poor who can stand on their own two feet and who will not become a public charge.”

This is in line with a new Trump administration regulation that could dramatically reduce the number of legal immigrants to the United States by allowing officials to reject green card and visa applicants if they are low-income, have little education or have ever relied on social assistance programs like Medicaid or food stamps. “This will help Citizenship and Immigration Services objectively determine whether the applicant is likely at any time in the future to receive public benefits,” Cuccinelli wrote in a CNN op-ed… [emphasis added]
