Mr. Arpaio, a Republican, was first elected sheriff in 1992 and was defeated by a Democrat in 2016. If elected in 2020, it would be his seventh term in office.

From Daily Kos: Dearborn, Michigan has cut ties with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, declining to renew a contract to jail immigrant detainees for the agency. Mayor Jack O’Reilly Jr. made the decision “following backlash by immigration advocates and religious groups,” The Detroit News reports. “The department has renewed contracts annually with Calhoun County and ICE for more than 10 years. Dearborn police would hold detainees for ICE in Dearborn’s 20-bed facility in an undisclosed location,” though detentions stretched into the thousands over the years.

Michigan Reps. Debbie Dingell, Rashida Talib and Andy Levin were among the leaders that have called for an end to local collaboration with ICE,  with demonstrators as recently as last week gathering outside the Dearborn Police Department to protest mass deportation policies.”This country is being divided by fear and hatred, and it’s wrong,” Dingell said. “We stand here today of members of all faiths that are being targeted.”

Kudos to Dearborn. Put ICE on ice! RESIST!!

Literally. This is the follow up to that sentence: “The consequences of taking Senator Reid’s advice will haunt liberals for decades.”

He’s throwing down the gauntlet to all the Democratic presidential and Senate candidates, threatening all-out war if they have the temerity to break his iron grip on the Senate by getting rid of  the legislative filibuster. He throws some stuff in about the sanctity of the Senate as an institution, even invoking Madison and Jefferson. But it’s clear that this is about raw power. His raw power.

Everyday Erinyes #180

Posted by at 9:26 am  Politics

Experts in autocracies have pointed out that it is, unfortunately, easy to slip into normalizing the tyrant, hence it is important to hang on to outrage. These incidents which seem to call for the efforts of the Greek Furies (Erinyes) to come and deal with them will, I hope, help with that. As a reminder, though no one really knows how many there were supposed to be, the three names we have are Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone. These roughly translate as “unceasing,” “grudging,” and “vengeful destruction.”

Today I want the Furies (and us) to look at a trend that is not new, but which has always been, and continues to be, largely missed.

We get so accustomed to “conservatives” being opposed to “conservation” that we are in danger of missing the fact that fascists want everything, and “everything” includes the environment.

==================================================================

White nationalists’ extreme solution to the coming environmental apocalypse

Alexandra Minna Stern, University of Michigan

White nationalists around the world are appropriating the language of environmentalism.

The white nationalist who allegedly massacred 22 people in El Paso in early August posted a four-page screed on the chatroom 8chan. In it, the shooter blames his attack on the “Hispanic invasion of Texas” and the impending “cultural and ethnic replacement” of whites in America.

The shooter also refers directly to the lengthy manifesto written by the man who allegedly murdered 52 in March in attacks motivated by Islamophobia on mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand.

The Christchurch shooter called himself an “ecofascist” who believes there is no “nationalism without environmentalism.” The El Paso shooter titled his rant “An Inconvenient Truth,” apparently in reference to Al Gore’s 2006 documentary warning about the dangers of climate change. He also praised “The Lorax,” Dr. Seuss’ classic story about deforestation and corporate greed.

The prominence of environmental themes in these manifestos is not an oddity. Instead, it signals the rise of ecofascism as a core ideology of contemporary white nationalism, a trend I uncovered when conducting research for my recent book, “Proud Boys and the White Ethnostate: How the Alt-Right Is Warping the American Imagination.”

The roots of ecofascism

Ecofascists combine anxieties about the demographic changes they characterize as “white extinction” with fantasies of pristine lands free of nonwhites and free of pollution.

Ecofascism’s roots trace back to early 1900s when romantic notions of communion with the land took hold in Germany. These ideas found expression in the concept of “lebensraum” or living spaces, and in attempts to create an exclusive Aryan fatherhood in which “blood and soil” racial nationalism reigned supreme. The concept of lebensraum was integral to the expansionist and genocidal policies of the Third Reich.

There is a long thread that ties xenophobia to right-wing environmentalism. In the U.S., strains of ecofascism appeared in the incipient environmental movement, espoused by racialists like Madison Grant, who in the 1920s championed the preservation of native flora including California’s redwood trees, while demonizing nonwhite immigrants.

After World War II, in the name of protecting forests and rivers, nativist organizations opposed to arrivals from non-European countries stoked fears of overpopulation and rampant immigration.

A meme popular online among the far-right and ecofascists is “save trees, not refugees.” Often ecofascist memes take the form of emojis like the popular Norse rune known as Algiz, or the “life” rune. This rune, favored by Heinrich Himmler and the SS, is one of many alternative symbols to swastikas that circulate online to dog whistle neo-Nazism allegiances.

Deep ecology

Many ecofascists today gravitate toward “deep ecology,” the philosophy developed by the Norwegian Arne Naess in the early 1970s. Naess wanted to distinguish “deep ecology,” which he characterized as reverence for all living things, from what he viewed as faddish “shallow ecology.”

Jettisoning Naess’ belief in the value of biological diversity, far-right thinkers have perverted deep ecology, imagining that the world is intrinsically unequal and that racial and gender hierarchies are part of nature’s design.

Deep ecology celebrates a quasi-spiritual connection to the land. As I show in my book, in its white nationalist version only men – white or European men – can truly commune with nature in a meaningful, transcendent way. This cosmic quest fuels their desire to preserve, by force if necessary, pure lands for white people.

White nationalists today look to the Finnish ecofascist Pentti Linkola, who advocates for stringent immigration restriction, “the reversion to pre-industrial life ways, and authoritarian measures to keep human life within strict limits.”

Reflecting on Linkola’s ideas, the white nationalist webzine Counter-Currents impels white men to take ecofascist action, saying that it is their duty to “safeguard the sanctity of the Earth.”

Why partisan labels don’t apply

This background helps to explain why the Christchurch shooter called himself an “ecofascist” and discussed environmental issues in his rambling screed.

The El Paso shooter offered more specific examples. In addition to mentioning the “The Lorax,” he criticized Americans for failing to recycle and for wanton waste of single-use plastics.

Their crusade to save white people from erasure through multiculturalism and immigration mirrors their crusade to preserve nature from environmental destruction and overpopulation.

The conventional wisdom in the public is that environmentalism is the province of liberals, if not of the left, with its commitments to environmental justice and carbon neutrality.

Yet the ubiquity of environmental concerns among white nationalists shows that distinctions between liberal and conservative are not necessarily germane when assessing the ideologies of the far-right today.

If current trends continue, the future will be one of intensified global warming and extreme weather patterns. There will be an increase in climate refugees, often seeking respite in the global north. In this context, I think that white nationalists will be primed to merge the prospect of climate calamities with their anxieties about white extinction.

Census projections indicate that around 2050 the U.S. will become a majority nonwhite country. For white nationalists, this demographic clock ticks more loudly each day. Both the Christchurch and the El Paso shooters invoke the “Great Replacement” theory, or the distorted idea that whites are being demographically outnumbered, to the point of extinction, by immigrants and racial others.

Given the patterns I see emerging, I believe that the public needs to recognize ecofascism as a dangerous cloud gathering on the horizon.

Remember seven years ago when a well-meaning elderly parishioner was given the task of “repairing” the “Ecce Homo” (Behold the Man) fresco painting in Borja, Spain – and it was so terrible it became a Meme?

Well, an Obama-hating, Trump-loving, right-wing “artist” (Jon McNaughton) has unwittingly provided the Twitter World with another chance of restoring his painting of Trump, modestly called “The Masterpiece”, to a similar new level of mirth as the fresco restoration.

McNaughton’s paintings have reflected his right-wing proclivities for years.  So when Trump was elected he practically probably had an orgasm.  He decided to do a portrait of Trump as an artist seated at an easel in what appears to be Wells Cathedral in England (no one knows why), teasingly revealing just a corner of his “masterpiece” because he’s not yet finished… (Editor’s Insertion: screwing America and the world).

This is the original Tweet by McNaughton announcing the painting:

While many think the reveal looks like the corner of Monet’s “Water Lilies” – the Twitterverse disagreed. And many took it upon themselves to fill-in the revealed corner of the canvas … with delightful results.

One aspect of the painting is plainly obvious: McNaughton has really done some major cosmetic work making Trump a LOT thinner. AND he appears to have greatly embellished his … endowment.

I’ll leave it to you to decide what … hmmm … errr … appendage is poking through the painter’s palette.

Some common themes emerged in the course of this meme. There was the linkage to White Nationalists …

And of course to dictators …

So you KNEW Hitler would also be showing up …

And sure enough, a food-theme started appearing

The one we’d all like to have revealed is this:

But my favorite Tweet was from the cheeky progressive, Tony Pasnanski, who starts out praising the rabid right-wing painter – before sticking the shiv in and twisting it. (If you scroll down, people are willing to pay for his work – well, at least the postage.)

The Madness of the Fuhrer

Posted by at 10:13 am  Politics
Aug 232019

I know I just wrote about this yesterday.  Nevertheless, the danger to the nation and to the world occasioned by the sociopathic state of Resident Donald Trump, Fuhrer of the Republicans Reich, continues to dominate the news.  The following article from Psychoanalyst Justin Frank, and an excellent video from Lawrence O’Donnell shed much more light on the subject.

0823TrumpMadness

[D]onald Trump is a living, breathing national emergency. Our president has repeatedly encouraged violence against his perceived enemies — and at least some of his supporters are following his lead. These are not isolated incidents. There are dozens of court cases where Donald Trump has been cited for “inspiring” acts of violence and other crimes. There are also the most odious examples such as the recent white supremacist terror attack in El Paso in which the alleged mass murderer wrote an online “manifesto” that almost verbatim channeled Trump’s threatening rhetoric towards nonwhite people.

In response to the white supremacist terrorist attack in El Paso and another mass shooting that same weekend in Dayton, Ohio, Trump specifically avoided a message of healing in a country reeling from multiple mass murders. Instead, Trump participated in ghoulish, vainglorious photo-ops at hospitals where the dying and injured were cared for after these incidents. Incapable of grace or dignity, Donald Trump lashed out at his political opponents. He even insulted the Republican mayor of El Paso during his visit to that city, calling him a “RINO” because he dared to push back against Trump’s disparaging comments about the city.

Donald Trump has publicly lied more than 12,000 times since becoming president, an average of 13 lies a day. These lies have created a cult-like alternate reality for Trump and his supporters…

…Donald Trump’s father always wanted him to be a killer. So psychologically Donald Trump functions like a killer — but he doesn’t kill directly. Donald Trump has other people that do it. In America there is an epidemic of violence about to happen because of Donald Trump. Donald Trump has to be quarantined to stop it….

From CBS News: A Michigan city council candidate shocked a public forum when she said she wants to keep “Marysville a white community as much as possible.”

Jean Cramer made the comment Thursday in response to a question about diversity in Marysville, a city in St. Clair County, 55 miles northeast of Detroit. The Times Herald in Port Huron says she’s one of five candidates running for three council seats in November.

The candidate further went on to state that she would not like “foreign born” people to settle in Marysville.

Republican to the end, she added that she is not against Blacks. RESIST!!

From Alternet: On Thursday, Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) tweeted out a message of unity and promised to work to reduce violence in his state, in the wake of the shooting in El Paso that left 22 dead and dozens more injured…

…But this was decidedly not the attitude Abbott had just one day before the shooting took place, when, according to the Texas Signal, he sent out a letter peppered with racist attacks on Hispanic immigrants — and a menacing, violent suggestion that Texans “take matters into our own hands.” [emphasis added]
