A Republican to Republicans

The following is an editorial by MSNBC Republican host, Joe Scarborough.  It is obviously directed to Republicans, but I can’t resist sharing it with you as well.  If I had a nickel for every time I’ve disagreed with Joe over the years, I could finance a luxurious retirement for us all, but this time, I could not agree more.

What a tremendous burden it must be for you to still be defending President Trump. You have called yourself a constitutional conservative for decades, but now you sit silently as the president pushes to move this year’s election because he might lose. Even some Republican senators are speaking up. Why aren’t you?

Trump remembers how you ran interference for him when he claimed unlimited powers under Article II of the Constitution, so he thinks you will stay quiet. Remember your silence after Charlottesville? You eventually mustered the nerve to claim Trump never preached moral equivalence between torch-carrying Nazis and protesters. How unthoughtful it was of David Duke to expose you by praising the president’s putrid performance and thanking Trump for his “honesty and courage to tell the truth.” The former Ku Klux Klan grand wizard even bragged to reporters that Charlottesville represented a “turning point” for white nationalism. “We are going to fulfill the promises of Donald Trump,” Duke proclaimed. “That’s why we voted for [him].”

Ouch. That one had to sting, but you kept on defending Donald…

…By this time, you began mindlessly regurgitating the former reality TV host’s propaganda about the “Russian hoax,” and hoped Americans would be stupid enough to ignore the mountains of damning evidence against Trump. Your singular focus turned to the Steele dossier’s most lurid tales, and you believed then, and now, that Christopher Steele’s fantastical claims could erase a multitude of Trump’s sins. You repeated the lies of Attorney General William P. Barr and South Carolina Sen. Lindsey O. Graham when they falsely claimed the FBI’s investigation began with Steele’s dossier. And you kept repeating this idiotic defense even after it became painfully evident that Trump’s team welcomed Russia’s interference in American democracy and then tried to cover it up. You still refuse to criticize the Trump team’s use of material stolen by Russia during the last month of the campaign, just like you and your president continue turning a blind eye to any Russian bounties.

None dare call it treason, but perhaps one day they will.   [emphasis added]

It’s another sweaty, stinky day here in the CatBox.  I had a rough night last night, because I ate supper too fast and plugged my esophageal tumor.  I spent most of the night imitating criminal Fuhrer Trump’s* AG.  The blockage didn’t clear until this morning.  Tomorrow please expect no more than an Open Thread or a Personal Update.  It’s a WWWendy day and the TomCat could not be more stinky.  I’ll try to swap the Politics Plus Poll, if I can, but it will probably have to wait until Sunday.  TGIF!

The world is dealing with an unprecedented health crisis caused by a new virus. With new insights in the way COVID19 spreads, in the way the virus behaves and in the way to deal with the pandemic every day, it is now more important than ever to safeguard the information we share is accurate and fact-based. We have to inoculate ourselves against the fake news and misinformation that infect our newsfeeds and timelines at this crucial moment by fact-checking.

For the duration of the pandemic, I will try to give you an overview of the main issues in CoronaCheck, an Australian email newsletter with the latest from around the world concerning the coronavirus, but now appear only once a week.*

CLIVE PALMER’S COMPARES COVID-19 WITH HEPATITIS B

Mr Palmer has launched legal action against the West Australian Government’s border closure. (AAP: Jono Searle)

Remember Trump wannabe, mining magnate and former federal MP Clive Palmer from COVID-19 Fact and Fiction #3 and COVID-19 Fact and Fiction #9? This millionaire with political ambitions shares many characteristics with the American president, one of which is working very hard at his personal advancement at the cost of others.

In May, Mr Palmer was denied entry to the state after the McGowan Government shut Western Australia’s borders the previous month to all but those deemed essential travellers. He had wanted to come to WA for a series of business and political meetings but WA police commissioner Chris Dawson did not grant him an exemption to enter the state.

Mr Palmer then lodged a writ against the decision in the High Court, claiming closing the WA border was an unconstitutional “act of stupidity”.  As his case against WA’s coronavirus border closures headed to the Federal Court this week, Mr Palmer took to social media to attack WA Premier Mark McGowan.

“Mark ‘The Menace’ McGowan knows the mortality rate for West Australians hasn’t increased because of COVID-19 yet he continues to mislead the people of WA for political grandstanding,” Mr Palmer, who is currently facing fraud charges over his 2013 election campaign, said.
This must sound terribly familiar to PP readers.

“There are other highly contagious viruses, for example Hepatitis B, which result in thousands of deaths every year. COVID-19 has claimed very few lives in WA, yet has led to unprecedented border closures and devastation to the economy.”

However, the comparison of COVID-19 to hepatitis B is not valid.

  • The blood-borne disease does not cause thousands of deaths every year, at least not in Australia. According to the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity, there were an estimated 435 deaths attributable to chronic hepatitis B in Australia in 2018. Additionally, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare says acute hepatitis B was responsible for 279 deaths in Australia between 1997 and 2016.
  • Josh Davis, a senior principal research fellow at the Menzies School of Health Research and former president of the Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases, told Fact Check that comparing deaths from hepatitis B and COVID-19 was “ridiculous” because the two diseases spread in very different ways, with hepatitis spread through blood and other bodily fluids (through sexual contact, mother to child transmission or shared injecting equipment) rather than via respiratory droplets as in the case of COVID-19.
  • “It’s completely safe to hug, kiss, share food etc with an HBV-infected person,” Professor Davis said in an email. “State borders are completely irrelevant.”
  • Hepatitis B causes a low-grade infection over decades and that around 80 per cent of people do not end up with health problems as a result of the infection.
  • “The only thing [hepatitis B and COVID-19] have in common is that they are both caused by viruses. But the viruses are no more closely genetically related to each other than a human is to a fish.”
  • And most importantly, there’s a vaccine for hepatitis B, first introduced in 1983. Australian year 7 students have been immunised for the disease since 1998, while newborn babies have received the vaccine since 2000.

Mr Palmer did not respond to a request for comment before publication.

MADONNA’S INSTAGRAM ACCOUNT FLAGGED FOR SPREADING MISINFORMATION

Popstar Madonna has been censured by Instagram after sharing a video about a coronavirus conspiracy theory to her 15 million followers. The singer claimed In her post that a vaccine for Covid-19 had already been found but was being hidden to “let the rich get richer”.

Instagram blurred out the video with a caption saying: “False Information” and directed users to a page debunking the claims in the video, noting there is no coronavirus vaccine.

The video in question showed a group called America’s Frontline Doctors speaking outside the US Supreme Court building at an event organised by Tea Party Patriots Action.

In the clip, Dr Stella Immanuel, a doctor from Houston, said she had successfully treated 350 coronavirus patients “and counting” with hydroxychloroquine.

The video was later deleted from Madonna’s Instagram page, but not before fans protested at her decision to share the post.

FROM WASHINGTON, D.C.

By the time Madonna posted the video on Instagram of a group of doctors claiming during a press conference in Washington that hydroxychloroquine, zinc and a drug known as Zithromax can cure COVID-19, it had gone viral, with US President Donald Trump retweeting it multiple times.

Fact Check has found that the video has been shared dozens of times in Australian Facebook groups popular with conspiracy theorists, despite attempts by social media platforms to remove the video.

According to PolitiFact, the cure claims made by one doctor in the clip, Stella Immanuel, are false, and there is no known cure for COVID-19. “In spite of Immanuel’s anecdotal evidence, hydroxychloroquine alone or in combination with other drugs is not a proven treatment (or cure) for COVID-19,” the fact-checkers concluded. “While some studies have found that the drug could help alleviate symptoms associated with COVID-19, the research is not conclusive.”

Meanwhile, The Washington Post found that Dr Immanuel was no stranger to making outlandish declarations, once claiming that gynaecological conditions such as endometriosis, infertility, miscarriages and STIs are caused by “sex with demons that takes place in dreams” and are ‘evil deposits from the spirit husband’.

In short, the lady is a quack and yet is someone Trump calls ‘impressive’.

When criminal Fuhrer Trump* looks ahead to November, his prospects could not look more bleak.  His Republican plague is sweeping the nation and even traditional Republicans are not buying his lies that it’s Obama’s, the Democrat’s, China’s, anyone but his fault.  The economy, his so-called “pride and joy”, is worse than it was in the great depression.  The polls are so bad that even Putin [R-RU] can’t steal this one for him.  But he and the Republican Party still seek to establish a permanent, totalitarian, plutocratic 5th Reich, in which elections exist for show only.

When Joe Biden mentioned the possibility that Donald Trump would try to “kick back the election somehow” back in April, Washington Post pundit Henry Olsen was aghast. He called Biden’s statement an “unfounded accusation” and said this was “not only clearly over the line but also unmasks how low the supposedly moderate Biden will go to win.”

Olsen better be prepping that apology, because on Thursday morning Trump extended his rant about mail-in voting to the place where it was obviously going all along. After repeating his previous lies about mail-in voting being “inaccurate and fraudulent,” Trump delivered the punch line. Rather than allow mail-in voting, why not, Trump suggested: “Delay the Election until people can properly, securely and safely vote.” That safety would, presumably, be entirely up to Trump. Meaning that Election Day would be the second Tuesday after never.

As The Washington Post points out, Trump cannot actually change the date of the federal elections. Though Trump may believe that Article II provides godlike powers, picking the date for federal elections is actually the role of Congress. And that date is already set. Congress doesn’t have to vote to have the election on Nov. 3; it would have to vote to change it to any other date.

Still, this isn’t as comforting as it should be. Now that Trump has made an official salvo down the delay path, it’s certain not to be the last. And it’s easy to believe that Sen. Mitch McConnell and the other Senate Republicans who voted to give Trump a free pass on bribing foreign countries into lying about his opponent would happily go along with this scheme. After all, for McConnell, every day the election is delayed is another day in which a Supreme Court opening might occur.

Naturally, the Democratically-led House wouldn’t go along with this, but that’s still no guarantee. Trump doesn’t have to actually delay the election so much as delegitimize it. That’s the purpose of all his rants against mail-in voting in the first place: To raise doubts about the outcome of the election and position Trump to deny the results, no matter how clear. It’s quite easy to imagine Donald Trump pounding the podium in November, claiming that only those votes cast in a voting booth on that date really count. Or even that the whole date is “not legitimate.” Because he says so. And it’s extremely easy to imagine Ted Cruz, and Lindsey Graham, and McConnell backing that play…  [emphasis added]

From OPB: Gov. Kate Brown on Tuesday unveiled coronavirus testing-related metrics the state must meet before schools can reopen, and it became immediately evident that many of the state’s largest school districts will be online-only this fall.

Brown’s announcement was swiftly followed by news from school districts: Portland Public Schools will have online classes only until at least Nov. 5 for all grades. Beaverton School District will be conducting classes online until at least Nov. 13. Salem-Keizer, North Clackamas and Tigard-Tualatin districts will also start the year holding online classes with plans to stay remote until at least late fall.

The list is likely to continue growing.

According to the latest county reopening guidelines announced by the governor, the entire state needs to have a weekly positivity rate of less than 5% for three weeks. The latest statewide positivity rates for COVID-19 tests for the previous three weeks were 5.8%, 5.8% and 4.6%.

Portland Public Schools Superintendent Guadalupe Guerrero warned online classes could stretch past November for his district.

“As an educator, I know that there is no true replacement for face-to-face learning and the interaction between a student and a dedicated teacher or staff member,” Guerrero said in a statement. “But our announcement today is in keeping with our highest priority during a global pandemic, which is the health and well being of our students and employees.”

Go, Joe! Go!

As of today, there are 99 days left until election day, and hopefully, not much longer before the US has a President for the first time since Obama left office.  It would be hard for things to look much better for Joe Biden.

0727ElectionMap

The polls say things are looking very good for former Vice President Joe Biden. Polling averages show the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee ahead in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Florida, North Carolina, and Arizona. And some eye-popping surveys even have him leading President Donald Trump in Texas, which hasn’t gone for a Democrat since 1976. But is it all too good to be true? Many Democrats certainly seem to think so.

“I don’t trust polling,” Michigan Rep. Debbie Dingell recently told the Atlantic. “I don’t believe that Biden is 16 points up in Michigan; that’s a bullshit poll, and it’s the same people who said Hillary [Clinton] had it in the bag.”

Dingell is among the Democrats traumatized by polling missteps last cycle, which led surveys to overlook the strength of Trump’s support in key battleground states including Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania — three states Clinton was counting on to win the election. In a late-October survey of Wisconsin, for example, the Marquette Law School poll had Clinton up by 6 percentage points, while Trump ultimately won the state by 0.7 points.

After the election, pollsters conducted an autopsy of why there was such a disconnect between state polls and the final electoral outcomes (though perhaps less so than some Democrats believe).

The review, led by the American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR), identified multiple factors: For one, some pollsters failed to weight for education — so more educated individuals who favored Hillary Clinton were overrepresented in samples and skewing the results. For another, many surveys missed the wave of undecided voters who may have broken for Trump at the last minute.

Importantly, as many pollsters frequently emphasize, the way polls are interpreted also matters: These surveys, after all, are intended to be a “snapshot” in time, and not necessarily predictive of the election’s final result. It’s worth noting, too, that there are variables that make every cycle different: According to a mid-July New York Times analysis, because of the polling lead he currently has, Biden would still win key battleground states if the polls had errors comparable to the ones they saw in 2016…  [emphasis added]

Trump won these key states in 2016. Now, he’s losing them

Of course, the worst thing we can do is to become complacent and overconfident.  That could give Trump* at least four more years man maybe make him permanent Fuhrer of the Republican Fifth Reich.  Nevertheless, day after day of ever increasing horrors can tire us to the point of PTSD.  Therefore, it’s important that we recognize the light at the end of the tunnel to give us hope.  Go, Joe!  Go!
