It’s a busy day here in the CatBox.  Diana should be here in a few minutes for her routine visit, and WWWendy will be here late this afternoon.  The score is now WWWendy 1 to TC 1.  I plugged the toilet this morning!  ARGH!  Oh God, it’s Monday!

From Alternet: One of the many oddities of the now-terminated Robert Mueller probe into Russian election interference and its links to various members of the Trump campaign and family, and in fact of all known federal probes into Russia’s Trump-related actions, has been the seeming lack of any counterintelligence probe on Donald Trump’s myriad, longstanding financial connections to Russia—and what role those financial ties have played both in the Russian government’s actions on behalf of Trump and their possible leverage over the now-president.

A new story from The New York Times‘ Michael Schmidt reports that that’s because in the first months of the new Trump administration, former deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein shuttered that investigation—then ordered special counsel Robert Mueller to steer clear of it himself. It’s not that the counterintelligence investigation into Trump’s known ties to Russian crime figures, to money laundering, and his family’s stated reliance on Russian cash has been kept closely-held: It never existed. And it still doesn’t.

Assuming that we win in November, the investigation blocked by Rosy Rectum Rosenstein needs to be done, and Trump* needs to be prosecuted, convicted, and incarcerated for the crimes Republicans are hiding.  RESIST!!

Here is the one hundred eighty-third article in our Republicans on Parade series, featuring individuals who personify what the Republican Party has become. Today’s winner is Republican Ammosexual terrorist, Kyle Rittenhouse. He is so honored for murdering two peaceful BLM protestors, while enacting the policies of his crazed Fuhrer, Donald Trump*.

0829Rittenhouse1A teenager who walked among protesters in Kenosha, Wis., carrying a military-style semi-automatic rifle was arrested and faces a charge of first-degree intentional homicide in connection with shootings that left two people dead on Tuesday night.

Kyle Rittenhouse, a 17-year-old Illinois resident, appeared on multiple videos taken throughout the night by protesters and bystanders who chronicled the events as peaceful protests gave way to chaos, with demonstrators, armed civilians and others facing off against one another and the police in the darkened streets.

The New York Times’s Visual Investigations unit analyzed hours of footage to track Mr. Rittenhouse’s movements in the moments leading up to, and during, the shootings.

Who is Kyle Rittenhouse?

0829Rittenhouse2Mr. Rittenhouse was arrested early Wednesday in his hometown, Antioch, Ill., which is about 30 minutes southwest of the protests in Kenosha, just over the state line.

Multiple posts on his social media accounts proclaim support for pro-police causes like the Blue Lives Matter movement and Humanize the Badge, a nonprofit that he ran a Facebook fund-raiser for on his 16th birthday.

His posts also suggest a strong affinity for guns, with videos showing Mr. Rittenhouse taking backyard target practice, posing with guns and assembling a weapon.

But many details about both his background and his motivations for walking around the Kenosha protests carrying a military-style semi-automatic rifle are still emerging…

I suspect that, if he is convicted, Trump* will pardon him. And when he turns eighteen, the Republican Reich will hire him as one of their Gestapo Storm Troopers.

Events Leading To Shooting That Left 2 Dead In Kenosha Played Out On Social Media

Why is it that police weren’t offering water to black people, but were to armed Republican terrorists?  Why were police helping them escape justice for the mayhem they caused. There is no question that terrorist Republican murderer Rittenhouse deserves this parade. Do the police also deserve one as criminal accessories before and after the fact?

It’s a muggy day here in the CatBox.  I did get to lie down for 90 minutes to rest my back.  Tomorrow morning I have a routine visit from Diana, my palliative care nurse.  Tomorrow is also a WWWendy day to destink the extra-mangy TomCat, change my pain patch, goop, and help with chores.  However, that won’t effect my blogging, as she won’t be here until late afternoon.  Sometime this week, I need to take at least a partial day off to complete some tasks in preparation for my death.  I need to arrange for the transfer of the ownership of this site to JD, Lynn, and Nameless.  I also need to arrange for low-cost cremation, unless you folks would like to goop me for your pets.  I hope you’re having a lazy Sunday.

From Vox: A shooter killed one person in Portland, Oregon on Saturday night, according to a statement by the Portland Police Bureau.

Much is still unknown about the shooting, but the victim — a white man — appears to have had some connection to the far-right Patriot Prayer group; according to Willamette Week reporter Aaron Mesh, the victim was wearing a hat and shirt with the group’s logo.

The shooting comes after supporters of President Donald Trump led a caravan of vehicles through the city Saturday and clashed with anti-police brutality protesters in Portland’s downtown; video from journalist Cory Elia shows trucks flying Trump flags driving through people on a street and unleashing pepper spray as the vehicles forced their way through a crowd of protesters…

…Early Sunday, Trump issued a string of tweets and retweets, including one retweet and a tweet condemning Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler’s leadership of the city. “The National Guard is Ready, Willing and Able” to deploy, Trump wrote in a quote tweet [Republican Fuhrer delinked] shortly after calling Wheeler [Republican Fuhrer delinked] a “fool.”

It strikes me as very strange that a Republican was the murder victim in this case. Democrats do not carry loaded guns to demonstrations. The Ammosexuals that do are either Republicans or right-wing anarchists, whose only intent is violence. Republicans falsely associate the anarchists with Democrats, but their behavior is too Republican-like for that to be true. If the shooter was not an anarchist, than Republicans must have killed one of their own terrorists by mistake. My beef with Wheeler is that he tends to let the rabid Republican police union intimidate him.  RESIST!!

I came across this commercial for a drug whose time is now.  Even if it is not for you, I’m sure you know people – possibly even family members, who absolutely could benefit from it.  You will thank me for sharing this commercial message:

Transcript:

Are you bored and disinterested in things that used to seem important like the President using his levers of power to ensure reelection? Ask your doctor about Notnormalzol®. Notnormalzol® is a prescription strength slap to the face that will leave you renewed and reminded that crimes are illegal. Notnormalzol® has also been found effective against thinking that treason is no biggie, also known as Bill Barr syndrome. Here’s how it works: Notnormalzol® contains fast acting Slapicin®, which penetrates the outrage fatigue cortex to stimulate your dormant whatthehellabellum. Side effects of Notnormalzol® may include bruising and not shutting up about the Postmaster General saying he’s optimizing the Postal Service. (“Is that what stealing mailboxes and stacking them like cordwood means? HOW STUPID DO YOU THINK i AM?!! What’s happened to my country!! I can’t take this any more!! [slap] Ow.”) Ask your doctor if Notnormalzol® is right for you. And ask him who he voted for. Warning: Notnormalzol® should always be taken with alcohol.

It’s that time of week again, so here are three good video clips, from Bill’s show last night. Enjoy!

Monologue: American Carnage

Three fact checkers taken into concussion protocols? I’m amazed they weren’t taken into funeral homes! Bill painted the convention hypocrisy perfectly. The last time Kimberly had an orgasm, folks thought the fire department was on the way.

Wynton Marsalis: The Ever Fonky Lowdown

While some people on both sides think like Wynton and Bill say they do, I tend to disagree. Many on the left are open minded. While far fewer on the right are, because of their identification with authoritarianism, I do know right wing people with whom I can hold respectful conversations in which we agree to disagree.  However I have to admit they are not thrilled with Trump*

New Rule: Think Like a True QAnon

I heard on the news this morning that Republicans are exporting QAnon to other countries. That makes the Republican Party an international terrorist organization. I bet a buck that Jo Rae Perkins will NOT defeat Jeff Merkley [D-OR]!

And for once JD gets her dose of culture this weekend, without me bugging her to post this! 😉

It’s another tired day here in the CatBox.  I overslept again.  Yesterday I had a rough afternoon.  My pulled pork BBQ goop still had chucks that were too big, and it plugged my tumor.  That kept me awake all afternoon.  WWWendy regooped it when she made a pit stop to change my pain patch.  At least its cooler.  We have three days in the 70°s before a week in the 90°s.  Have a fine weekend.

Short Takes:

From NY Times: It started with an unexpected call last week from Lynne Patton, a longtime Trump associate who oversees federal housing programs in New York.

Ms. Patton told a leader of a tenants’ group at the New York City Housing Authority, the nation’s largest, that she was interested in speaking with residents about conditions in the authority’s buildings, which have long been in poor repair.

Four tenants soon assembled in front of a video camera and were interviewed for more than four hours by Ms. Patton herself. Three of the tenants were never told that their interviews would be edited into a two-minute video clip that would air prominently on Thursday night at the Republican National Convention and be used to bash Mayor Bill de Blasio, the three tenants said in interviews on Friday.

“I am not a Trump supporter,” said one of the tenants, Claudia Perez. “I am not a supporter of his racist policies on immigration. I am a first-generation Honduran. It was my people he was sending back.”

The episode represents another stark example of how President Trump has deployed government resources to further his political ambitions.

My response can be condensed into one word: typical!  RESIST!!

Everyday Erinyes #230

Posted by at 9:00 am  Politics
Aug 292020

Experts in autocracies have pointed out that it is, unfortunately, easy to slip into normalizing the tyrant, hence it is important to hang on to outrage. These incidents which seem to call for the efforts of the Greek Furies (Erinyes) to come and deal with them will, I hope, help with that. As a reminder, though no one really knows how many there were supposed to be, the three names we have are Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone. These roughly translate as “unceasing,” “grudging,” and “vengeful destruction.”

There are many aspects of life that one doesn’t find out about until one is, for want of a better word, exposed to them If this is true of life in general, how mush more is it true of a pandemic. Lona sent me a link to an article on the use of solitary confinement in ICE immigration detention centers, thinking the Furies might be interested. And they are. I see three issues here – first, prisons in general – the prison systems, the state of prison facilities, the conditions for those who work in prisons as well as those who are living there, for whatever reason, for whatever length of time. Second is the whole issue of solitary confinement within prisons, how it affects those who are kept in it, and especially for long periods of time, what it is like to be in it as opposed to outside of it but still in the prison – all of that. Third is the pandemic itself. Prisons, be they correctional or immigration prisons, are charged with the duty of keeping their inmates safe, including from the coronavirus. They do not always succeed in that duty (As we know from other horror stories, some don’t try very hard.)

The article begins with a story from Carlos Hernandez Corbacho. Mr. Hernandez Corbacho, and his wife Maydel Curbelo Perez, fled Cuba on account of the attention they were receiving from police on account of their open and vocal criticism of government. They came to the US by a route including Nicaragua and moving up through Central America to Nogales, Mexico, which borders Arizona. They presented themselves to CBP for political asylum, a perfectly legal thing for them to do. This happened about last November, after a roughly five-month journey. Curbelo Perez won asylum in March. then came CoViD, and Hernandez Corbacho’s court dates kept getting postponed. He won asylum August 19, but not until having been stranded in ICE detention for about five months.

He felt his first symptom in June. “But he said he was afraid to say anything. He’d heard rumors of officials locking detainees with COVID-19 symptoms in solitary, and wanted to put it off as long as possible.” One can hardly blame him. And that’s part of the problem. “Placing COVID-19 patients in solitary confinement, experts say, is inhumane and jeopardizes the overall population by deterring detainees from reporting symptoms. (emphasis mine)

Solitary confinement was never intended to be used for quarantine. However, I don’t know what other facilities an ICE detention center might have or have access to. At any rate, that’s what was used, and the experience was terrible.

I cannot embed, but I can link to, a statement by Mr.Hernandez Corbacho, in a video format, in Spanish, but woth CC in English.

“In an emailed statement, ICE said that its quarantine practices are not a punitive measure and are conducted in accordance with the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control guidelines.” Well, that can be true, and still have absolutely nothing to do with what it feels like to an asylum seeker – or anyone else in that position. Even if not filthy, as it sadly often is, it can be very hard on people. One thing which does not occur to people who have never been near such a thing, and trying to imagine it, is that it is generally incredibly noisy. That alone can feel like being beaten. Mr. Hernandez Corbacho alludes to this. So did Colorado’s head correctional officer, who voluntarily spent 24 hours in solitary confinement soon after he took the position, in order to have the experience. I’m an introvert, but the noise level and quality they describe would drive me up a wall very fast.

And yet, dear Furies, I am going to give the low level employees, aorking in these conditions, many of them just trying to do a job they see as necessary while at the same time doing their best to support their family – I am going to give them a pass. They are not what is wrong. What is wrong is our as a society massive failure to address any of these massive ills – prison, ICE, and CoViD – until they all hit at the same time.

Instead, I am going to ask your help at this point to get guilty and incompetent Republicans out of government and replace them with innocent and competent Democrats, and THEN we can tackle all of these problems. Perhaps Alecto would like to take prisons, Megaera would consider auditing ICE, and Tisiphone would tackle the pandemic, along with our preparedness – or the lack of it – for another one or more.

Before I sign off, I would like to give one example of credit where credit is due. This article looks at numerous prisons in numerous places, and in the process they spoke with CoreCivic.

CoreCivic — which contracts with ICE to run La Palma and a number of other detention centers — denies that their facilities use solitary confinement.

“The claim that solitary confinement is used in our facilities is patently false,” CoreCivic spokesperson Ryan Gustin said. “Like most public and private secure facilities during this pandemic, we use separate housing units within our facilities to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 when someone is confirmed positive for the virus.”

As a corporation I would not trust CoreCivic as far as I could throw one of their facilities, barbed wire and all. However, as the spouse of an inmate in a CoreCivic facility, who regularly speaks with him on the phone, I can testify almost first hand that “separate housing units within our facilities” is exactly what they are using there, and that it has kept and is keeping him virus free. (The inmates do have masks and are encouraged to use them and to practice social distance also, within the housing units.) I probably should add this is not the only CoreCivic facility he has been in, and that this one is run in a way noticeably superior to the other. So this may in fact the only one of their facilities which is keeping that promise – but at least this one is.  He would not be any safer if he were at home, and in fact he would almost certainly be less safe here.

The Furies and I will be back.

I was certain the RNC Convention would prove to be a treasure trove for my “Friday Fun” post – but I wasn’t expecting THIS bumper crop!  With as much grist for mill as they sowed, it took me a lot longer to winnow the wheat from the chaff.  (Can you tell I miss my days on the family farm?)

I’d be derelict if I didn’t give top billing to Junior’s new main squeeze, Kimberly Guilfoyle.

It’s not often, but on a rare occasion I’m actually a bit relieved to have my hearing deficit – and apparently her speech SCREAMED on opening night is one of those.  The neighbor told me that he heard her entire screech – and his TV wasn’t even on!

Guilfoyle was certainly a champion Meme Generator – so let’s sample a few of the ones I enjoyed most.  To begin, here’s a compilation of folks reprising her shouted signature closing.

Having failed to keep up with the “cool kids” for decades now, I appreciated learning quite a bit about more recent culture trends than Howdy Doody, American Bandstand, or even Candid Camera.  So, for all you Power Ranger aficionados, she reminded lots of folks of Rita Repulsa.

Being more old-school, I’d go with Evita

Or even Cruella de Vil

But no matter which persona you see her as, I think we can all agree that this is amazingly accurate description of her performance:

Given that Junior’s contribution featured his rapid-fire delivery, bloodshot, watery, dilated eyes and sweaty skin, many people are saying he and Kimberly shared their Stash before appearing.  Having seen my share of cocaine complications among teens, I could not argue against that observation.

Based on Kim and Junior’s performances, it’s fair to conclude that Rethuglicans have lost their “War on Drugs”:

Seems to me that if SIX of the twelve “Keynote Speakers” share the same last name as Dear Leader, it’s fair to conclude the GOP is currently drifting into North Korea territory.

But there was good and understandable reason for that …

If you happen to be wondering why you never received your gold-embossed Summons … errr … Invitation to any of the events – that, too, can be easily explained:

Of course, there were other speakers, like the McCloskeys from St. Louis who had a unique qualification beside donating huge amounts of money …

And Donnie was heartbroken to learn that Jerry Falwell, Jr. turned down his invitation to speak at the convention.  But as we’ve recently learned from his pool boy, Giancarlo Granda

Despite their promises to the contrary, the RNC Convention exposé was a four-day forum of forlorn, dark, oppressive and depressing presentations.  Rod Serling provides the reason for that:

And Charlie Brown easily provides the closing take-home lesson from their four-day debacle:

No doubt we all agree it’d be great if we could just skip ahead to the time when we have a vaccine … and Trump is in prison!
