Short Takes:

From KP Daily Funnies: Danny Elfman: Trump Stalks Hillary

There is nothing funny about this. Am I the only one that was surprised she didn’t turn and kick his tiny dingles?

From Daily Kos: Emails leaked by a hacker reveal that former Secretary of State Colin Powell considers Donald Trump “A national disgrace and international pariah,” and that he and his successor, Condoleezza Rice, agreed the years of investigation into the Benghazi attack in 2012 were “a stupid witch hunt.”

The emails are thought to have come from DCLeaks.com, which some computer specialists believe is connected to Russian intelligence services.

That’s a big OOPS for Putin’s spies. They are only supposed to leak things that help Putin’s dog.

From YouTube: Obama Angrily Tears Into GOP: You Don’t ‘Get Credit’ for Just Suddenly Dumping Trump!

Trump is a symptom of the Republican Party, a cancer that must be excised to save America.

You probably think I’m sounding like a broken record, but you’ll only have me harassing you about this for less than  a month.  In the interim, I offer no apology.  The stakes are just too damn high.  But don’t listen to me.  And don’t listen to the Reich on the Right, The Republican Reich, including their proxies brought to you by Putin.  Listen to the Reich on the Left, Robert Reich.  He admonishes progressives to vote for Hillary.

I continue to hear from many people who call themselves progressives or liberals, but tell me they won’t vote for Hillary Clinton in the upcoming election.

With due respect, I believe they’re wrong.

Herewith, their three major arguments and my responses.

Some claim she’s no better than Donald Trump. “He’s bad, but she’s just as bad,” they say.

I’m sorry, but anyone who equates Trump with Clinton hasn’t been paying attention.

Donald Trump is a dangerous, bigoted, misogynistic, narcissistic megalomaniac with fascist tendencies. If elected president he could wreak irreparable damage on America and the world.

Hillary isn’t perfect but she’s able and experienced. I’ve known her for almost fifty years and worked with her closely in her husband’s administration. She will make a good president.

There is simply no comparison… [emphasis added]

From <Robert Reich>

I shared one of the three major arguments.  Please click through to read about the other two.

You certainly have the right to vote for whomever you choose, but you ought to recognize that failure to vote strategically by voting for a candidate, who cannot win, has consequences that extend far beyond the feel-good protest value you derive from it.  If you refuse to recognize that saving this nation from Trump carries more weight than feeling good, than be prepared to accept responsibility for consequences.  At least 2000 Nader voters have one valid excuse.  They didn’t realize how dire the consequences were.  Today, it’s obvious.

Short Takes:

From KP Daily Funnies: FOD: The Cure for Being a Woman

They’d better hide this from Republicans. They’re stupid enough to believe it.

From Daily Kos: This is just fun. Legendary singer, songwriter, musician and activist Carly Simon has given her permission and blessings for her classic song “You’re So Vain” to be used in a video that mocks the conceit of Republican nominee Donald Trump. This marks the first time Simon has allowed her 1972 hit to be used for political purposes. A spokesman for Simon said the singer is:

“…alarmed at the prospect of Donald Trump reaching the White House and has joined other creative voices in making a definitive statement.”

Love it!

From NY Times: Stung by a fierce backlash from Donald J. Trump’s ardent supporters, four Republican members of Congress who had made headlines for demanding that Mr. Trump leave the presidential race retreated quietly this week, conceding that they would still probably vote for the man they had excoriated just days before.

From Senator John Thune of South Dakota, the only member of the Republican leadership in either chamber who had disavowed Mr. Trump, to Representative Scott Garrett of New Jersey, who is in a difficult re-election fight, the lawmakers contorted themselves over Mr. Trump. Some of them would not mention him by name, preferring instead to affirm their support for the generic “Republican ticket,” still grasping for a middle ground.

They said that if Mr. Trump would not make way for his running mate, Gov. Mike Pence of Indiana, to lead the party after the release of a recording on Friday showing Mr. Trump bragging about groping women, they had little choice but to vote for their embattled nominee. But the collective about-face owed less to his refusal to exit a race in which ballots are already being cast than to the fury his supporters unleashed at the defectors at rallies and on social media.

Once again, the Republican Party owns Trump, and Trump owns the Republican Party. They are the same.

Gore Remembers

Imagine a world in which the President of the United States had paid attention when warned of an impending terrorist attack using airplanes and taken the measures needed to prevent it.  There would have been no 9/11, no Iraq War, no torture, no Bush Reich, no unPATRIOT Act, no Republican Recession and more.  We would have had that world, if Republicans had not used a third party to get close enough to steal the 2000 election.

1012gore-clinton

At a campaign rally for Hillary Clinton in Miami, Florida, Al Gore reminded millennial voters that “every vote counts,” a slogan that applied to his 2000 campaign in the state, which he used as a cautionary tale to those considering sitting the election out.

“You will often hear people from podiums like this one say something like that at election time. I know. I’ve heard it. I’ve even said it before,” Gore said Tuesday. “But honestly, to those of you here and those who can hear my voice by whatever means, this election really matters.”

“The world is on the cusp of either building on the progress and solving the climate crisis or stepping back, washing our hands of America’s traditional role as the leader of the world, and letting the big polluters call the shots,” Gore warned. “The choice is that clear. It’s that stark. The consequences for not just our children and grandchildren and future generations but for all of us, are really quite significant.”

“So because of that, please take it from me. Every single vote counts,” he said to cheers…

From <TPM>

Move-on provided us video of that event.

Don’t forget, the Green Party accepted help from Republican operatives, who went door to door in Democratic leaning districts in FL to convince voters to shift their support from Gore to Nader. Had this not succeeded, Bush could not have gotten close enough to steal the election. Little has changed. Today the Green Party is accepting help from Trump ally, Vladimir Putin (R-RU), using his propaganda network, RT, to convince voters to shift their support from Clinton to Stein. Imagine where we might be if the Bush Reich had never happened. Don’t let it happen again.

It’s another busy Wednesday.  I lay down after finishing my research this morning.  I have a grocery delivery coming this afternoon, and I have to unpack and put them away.  Later, Wendy is coming to wash the TomCat, do some light cleaning and have dinner.  I made a one-day chili for us this morning, so we can send a double green cloud after the Squatch. Sick smile  Happy hump day to all!!

Short Takes:

From CCR (Hat-Tip JL A, who sent me an email about it): Today, nearly 14 years after the case began, the Supreme Court granted John Ashcroft and other Bush-era government officials’ requests to review CCR’s class action challenge to the post-9/11 immigration detentions. In Turkmen v. Ashcroft, the Supreme Court will directly confront, for the first time, whether the Constitution guarantees non-citizens the right to sue cabinet-level officials for clearly unconstitutional discrimination and abuse in a US prison.

In some ways, the answer seems obvious.  In the wake of the 9/11 attacks, hundreds of Muslim, Arab, and South Asian men were arrested on civil immigration charges and treated as suspected terrorists based on nothing more than their race and religion. As a panel of the Second Circuit Court of Appeals explained last year, “detaining individuals as if they were terrorists, in the most restrictive conditions of confinement available, simply because these individuals were, or appeared to be, Arab or Muslim exceeds [constitutional] limits. It might well be that national security concerns motivated the Defendants to take action, but that is of little solace to those who felt the brunt of that decision. The suffering endured by those who were imprisoned merely because they were caught up in the hysteria of the days immediately following 9/11 is not without a remedy.”

And yet.  Ashcroft, along with former-FBI director Robert Mueller, and former-INS Commissioner James Ziglar, are arguing that non-citizens injured in the name of national security, and pursuant to high-level policy, should not even be allowed in the courthouse door. A doctrine called “qualified immunity” already provides these Government actors with substantial protection, allowing them to be held personally liable only if they are shown to have violated clearly established law about which any reasonable official would have known.  These defendants want more. Represented by the current Solicitor General of the United States, former government officials are asking the Supreme Court to grant them the right to violate clearly established constitutional rights at will. Perhaps even more troubling, they are also arguing that it is not clearly established that our Constitutional guaranty of equal protection prohibits the government from placing people in the most restrictive conditions of confinement that exist in the federal prison system based only on their race, religion, ethnicity and national origin, while knowing there is no non-discriminatory reason to suspect them of ties to terrorism.

In my opinion, the Republicans that committed this war crime should be convicted both civilly and criminally. This case also shows how important it is to have Supreme Court vacancies filled by Clinton, not Trump. Trump Injustices would criminalize refraining from committing war crimes.

From TPM: Four former contestants in the 1997 Miss Teen USA pageant told Buzzfeed News that Donald Trump walked into the dressing room while they were changing clothes.

"I remember putting on my dress really quick because I was like, ‘Oh my god, there’s a man in here,’" Mariah Billado, former Miss Vermont Teen USA, told Buzzfeed News.

Billado said that Trump said something along the lines of, "Don’t worry, ladies, I’ve seen it all before," when he walked into the room.

As Buzzfeed News noted, girls as young as 15 competed in the pageant, and contestants told Buzzfeed that the dressing rooms were typically open spaces without barriers shielding them while they changed clothes.

Three other former contestants in the Miss Teen USA pageant confirmed to Buzzfeed News that Trump walked into the dressing room, but they asked to not be named. One former contestant said that Trump’s decision to enter the dressing room was "shocking" and "creepy," according to Buzzfeed News.

We now have enough Republican smoking guns to start WWIII.

From NY Times: With early voting already underway in many of the states that will decide the presidency, Hillary Clinton is beginning to reap the benefits of years of Democratic efforts to target and register voters, even as Republicans steadily close their disadvantage in party registration.

The first wave of data from states like Florida and North Carolina shows preliminary signs that Mrs. Clinton was building a slight edge even before the revelation that Donald J. Trump had bragged about sexual assault roiled the race.

The closer we get to election day, the more news of this kind we will get. We must not allow complacency to set in.

I’m amazed that I won with most of my starters injured or bye, but Rob, Vivian, and Robb are way out in front.

Short Takes:

From The New Yorker: As the crisis at the top of their ticket deepened on Sunday, there were increasing calls from Republican officials to replace a man who hates women with a man who hates both women and gays.

“We currently have a Presidential nominee who is consumed by his hatred of women,” Harland Dorrinson, a longtime G.O.P. official, said. “It is time for him to step aside in favor of a man who has demonstrated a more even-handed loathing of both women and gays.”

The Republican official argued that a “stellar performance” in last week’s Vice-Presidential was another reason to elevate the man to the top of the ticket. “For ninety minutes, he made no reference whatsoever to female genitalia,” he said. “That showed he has what it takes to be President.”

Andy, as I have long said, Trump is merely a symptom of the cancer that must be excised to save the US: the Republican Party.

From The New Yorker: Fearing that millions of foreign tourists might cancel their plans to travel to the United States, President Obama used his emergency powers to interrupt the broadcast of the second Presidential debate.

“Good evening, friends around the world,” Obama began, in a reassuring tone. “For the past hour, many of you have been observing something that can only be described as nightmarish. I want to state in no uncertain terms: if you come to the United States, you will never, ever meet another man this horrible.”

“I can understand that many of you might greet my words with skepticism,” he said. “Well, you just have to believe me on this: I have met many, many, Americans and this is the worst guy I have ever encountered.”

Andy, should Obama really deceive the world like that? Bubba Bagger is as bad as Rump Dump, as is every Republican who votes for him.

From The New Yorker: Calling the Republican nominee’s behavior “completely indefensible,” the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, cancelled a joint campaign appearance with Donald Trump on Monday.

Putin, who had been scheduled to campaign alongside Trump at a rally in Columbus, Ohio, said that he would make no joint appearances with the billionaire for the remainder of the campaign.

“As the father of two daughters, I cannot condone or defend Mr. Trump’s behavior,” the Russian leader said in a curt official statement.

In addition to cancelling his appearance with Trump, Putin, who had been expected to spend thirty-one million rubles, or roughly five million dollars, on Trump campaign ads, is pulling those funds and will instead “focus on down-ballot races,” the statement said.

Andy, I don’t believe it. Putin (R-RU) has done so much for the Trump campaign already. I can’t see Putin abandoning his pet pup yet. I think he’ll just try to teach Trump to stop crapping on the rug.

I’m about to go to a medical appointment over my double vision.  I’ll publish this after I return.  In last nights masdebate, Trump was deplorable.  No fact passed his lips.  However, this was more even than the last, because Hillary performed poorly.

The doctor said that she thinks I’ll need surgery, but wants to be the last thing done, after cataract surgery and after surgery to remove the droop from my eyelids.  In the meantime, she fitted my old glasses with a prism that partially corrects the double vision at short range, as long as I’m looking straight ahead.
