It’s a chilly morning, here in the CatBox with a warm evening forecast.  I slept well, but still feel   tired.  OGIM!

Short Takes:

From Huffington Post: Attorney General William Barr threatened to bail on a scheduled Thursday hearing of the House Judiciary Committee to review special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia report if the panel moves forward with its proposed questioning format, two senior Democratic committee aides confirmed to HuffPost.

The Justice Department allegedly took issue with the panel’s plan to allow committee counsels for each political party to ask Barr follow-up questions for 30 minutes each following the traditional round of questioning by its members.

Barrf has it bass ackwards. Congress, not Barrf, determines the rules for Congressional committees. RESIST!!

From Alternet: With the release of the Mueller report, it is quite clear that Donald Trump has obstructed justice and lied to the American people, and, while there are no definitive links between Russia and his campaign, it is pretty clear that Russia helped him and his campaign, and that the Republican Party does not care.

The pursuit of power at any cost has consumed the Republican Party. It seems as if power is all it cares about. It does not care if you receive medical care, it does not care if you receive an education (it would prefer you don’t). What it does care about is making sure that taxes on the rich and on large corporations stay low, not because it believes the wealth will trickle down, but because it will allow its benefactors to increase the wealth they already have. Which is why Donald Trump will likely not face justice until he is out of office. Mitch McConnell would never let a Republican President be convicted by the Senate, even if there was no doubt about his guilt.

Mitch McConnell is the real cancer on our country. He has done more than anyone to make the U.S. Senate the most nonfunctioning governmental body we have seen in our history. This has been evident since 2010, when he uttered the words, “The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.” He then went on to obstruct everything that President Obama tried to do, including judicial appointments—capped off with preventing Merrick Garland from receiving even so much as a hearing toward his confirmation to a seat on the Supreme Court.

Fuhrer Drumpfenfarten is just a figurehead. When he’s gone the Republicans, who are even more evil will smile sweetly and say, “Who, us? Oh No! It was all Trump!” RESIST!!

From Vox: 1) What is Ramadan actually about?

Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year for Muslims — the Prophet Mohammed reportedly said, “When the month of Ramadan starts, the gates of heaven are opened and the gates of hell are closed and the devils are chained.”

Muslims believe it was during this month that God revealed the first verses of the Quran, Islam’s sacred text, to Mohammed, on a night known as “The Night of Power” (or Laylat al-Qadr in Arabic).

During the entire month of Ramadan, Muslims fast every day from dawn to sunset. It is meant to be a time of spiritual discipline — of deep contemplation of one’s relationship with God, extra prayer, increased charity and generosity, and intense study of the Quran.

But if that makes it sound super serious and boring, it’s really not. It’s a time of celebration and joy, to be spent with loved ones. At the end of Ramadan there’s a big three-day celebration called Eid al-Fitr, or the Festival of the Breaking of the Fast. It’s kind of like the Muslim version of Christmas, in the sense that it’s a religious holiday where everyone comes together for big meals with family and friends, exchanges presents, and generally has a lovely time.

Despite the hardship of fasting for a whole month, most Muslims (myself included) actually look forward to Ramadan and are a little sad when it’s over. There’s just something really special about knowing that tens of millions of your fellow Muslims around the world are experiencing the same hunger pangs, dry mouth, and dizzy spells that you are, and that we’re all in it together.

This is the first of nine questions about Ramadan. Click through for the other eight. I particularly liked #9. RESIST!!

It’s that time of week again, so here are four video clips from Bill’s show last night.  Enjoy!

Monologue: A Fresh Face

I liked Joe’s message too, bit disagree that Joe said removing Trump is the only issue. Pence would be as bad or worse.

Rep. Adam Schiff: Any Living Adult 2020

If Trump is not impeached, he must be voted out of office. After either, he must be indicted, convicted, and incarcerated. History demands it!

Bob Costas

Costas is a superb sportscaster. His insights are interesting.

New Rule: Crime and No Punishment

I agree, up to a point, but once you get past the lack of indictment, he laid out the facts well. It is Congress’ job to act on it.

I’m glad Bill is back.

It’s a chilly, but muggy,  day here in the CatBox.  Tomorrow I plan to post only a Personal Update, with no links messages on Care2.  Tomorrow is a WWWendy day, but it’s messed up.  She might come at her normal early morning time, or she might be unable to come before mid-afternoon.  My Broncos drafted Drew Locke, a QB from Ohio State.  I hope you are enjoying your weekend.

From Think Progress: On Friday evening, the University of Virginia men’s basketball team announced that it would not be visiting the White House to celebrate its national championship.

“We have received inquiries about a visit to the White House. With several players either pursuing pro opportunities or moving on from UVA, it would be difficult, if not impossible to get everyone back together,” head coach Tony Bennett said in a statement. “We would have to respectfully decline an invitation.”

The university is located in Charlottesville, Virginia, where a deadly white supremacist rally took place two summers ago. President Donald Trump infamously responded to that rally by saying that there had been “very fine people on both sides” — drawing an equivalence between the group wielding torches and screaming “Jews will not replace us,” and the people there protesting the hateful slogans.

While Bennett did not mention the president or politics in his statement, it was released just hours after Trump once again defended his comments on Charlottesville.

How the Fat Escaped the Fire

I needed to take a day off from writing about Fuhrer Drumpfenfarten and his ongoing plot to overthrow the government of the US.  And I think we need a reminder that the Republican Reich was evil and vile long before Putin had a Puppet in the White House.  Do you remember Bridgegate.  It was so obvious that Chris Christie, aka Pignocchio, was guilty that I thought he’d be wearing a 6X-BIG Orange Jumpsuit.  I wondered how he escaped, and now we’re finally learning how the fat stayed out of the fire.

0426BRIDGEGATE

A former Chris Christie aide sentenced to 13 months in prison for her role in “Bridgegate” lashed out at her former boss, calling him a “coward” and a “bully” as he continued to deny any knowledge of the scandal.

Bridget Anne Kelly was sentenced Wednesday in the corruption case, which stemmed from the 2013 toll lane closures on the George Washington Bridge that snarled traffic in Fort Lee, New Jersey, for four days as part of an apparent revenge scheme.

She was convicted in November 2016 along with Bill Baroni, former deputy executive director of the Port Authority. Both were found guilty of all seven charges they faced, including conspiracy, fraud and civil rights deprivation.

Speaking from a prepared statement after her sentencing, Kelly, 46, ripped into the former New Jersey governor, questioning how “all these men” were able to “escape justice.”… [emphasis added]

Inserted from <People>

I have little sympathy with Bridget Kelly.  Those who lie down with dawgs get up with fleas.  However, the way she was set up to take the fall for Pignocchio is particularly heinous.  Rachel Maddow covered this in two segments.  In the first, she sets up the story in detail (25 min.)

In the second, she interviews Bridget Kelly.

In short, the Republican Reich provided her a corrupt attorney.

This should serve as a reminder that the Republican Reich, without Trump, is every bit as evil as it is with Trump.

From YouTube (MSNBC Channel): Facebook Is Facing A Fine Of Up To $5 Billion, The Largest Ever

By Facebook standards, that fine is tiny!  Fuckerberg is dancing all the way to the bank. The Republican Reich is helping him screw YOU! UNPLUG!! With Facebook, the only way to win is not to play. RESIST!!

From NY Times: A panel of three federal judges ruled on Thursday that 34 congressional and state legislative districts in Michigan are extreme partisan gerrymanders and unconstitutional. The judges ordered state lawmakers to redraw maps in time for elections in 2020.

The panel wrote that it was joining “the growing chorus of federal courts” that have held that drawing districts to unfairly favor the party in power is unconstitutional. The judges said the maps violated Democratic voters’ constitutional rights.

But the impact of the ruling ultimately will turn on an opinion by the Supreme Court, which is weighing decisions in two other partisan gerrymander cases involving congressional districts in North Carolina and Maryland. The justices’ decision in those cases, expected by the end of June, could reinforce the Michigan ruling, force alterations to it, or even overrule it entirely.

The judges clearly did the right thing, but I have no faith that the Injustices of SCROTUS (Republican anti-Constitutional VD) will rule Constitutionally. RESIST!!

She The People

Yesterday eight Democratic candidates for the Presidency participated in the She The People forum.  They were Corey Booker, Julian Castro, Tulsi Gabbard, Kamala Harris, Amy Klobuchar, Beto O’Rourke, Bernie Sanders, and Elizabeth Warren.  The main topic of discussion was, “Why should women of color vote for you?”  Some did better than others.

0425She

Some 2,000 women, almost all of them women of color, gathered here Wednesday for the “She the People” forum, where they pressed Democrats running for president on how they propose to help support their communities.

The gathering aimed to address “the unfinished business of women of color,” Aimee Allison, founder of She the People and organizer of the event, told ThinkProgress.

“The exciting thing is to be able to highlight women of color… as drivers of a progressive future,” Allison said. She said that one of the goals is to ensure that, unlike in past elections, the interests and needs of women voters of color are given full consideration by the candidates running in 2020.

“We certainly weren’t acknowledged or highlighted in 2016, and we’re not allowing that to happen again,” Allison said.

The eight Democratic contenders at the event, held at Texas Southern University, were Sens. Cory Booker (NJ), Amy Klobuchar (MN), Kamala Harris (CA), Elizabeth Warren (MA), Bernie Sanders (VT), former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (TX), Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (HI), and former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julián Castro.

One by one, the candidates fielded questions from Allison, MSNBC host JoyAnn Reid, and members of the audience on voting rights, climate change, sexual violence, education, health care, and other issues. Each candidate’s interview ended with the same question: “Why should women of color vote for you?”….

Inserted from <Think Progress>

Thought two candidates did poorly.  I don’t think they even took Tulsi Gabbard seriously.  Bernie Sanders jumped into his standard talking points without addressing their questions.  He talked about the 1960s.  They wanted to discuss now  Their irritation was obvious.  Five candidates did well enough to be warmly received, Especially Kamala Harris.  One, stood out above the rest, Elizabeth Warren.  She alone answered their questions with well planned solutions.  They knew she was well prepared and liked it.

That’s my take on it.  Here it is in it’s entirety, so you can decide for yourselves.  But be warned.  The video is three hours long.

What say you?

From The New Yorker: Donald J. Trump was reportedly “furious” on Wednesday morning after a purge of right-wing bots by Twitter left him with a total of fourteen remaining followers, aides have confirmed.

Rising at 3 a.m. to engage in one of his trademark early-morning tweetstorms, Trump was incensed to discover that his Twitter following had plummeted from more than forty-eight million to a little more than a dozen.

At Twitter headquarters, in San Francisco, a company spokesman confirmed that Trump had indeed lost 48,076,920 followers in the bot purge. “It turned out that over forty-six million of the President’s followers came from a single troll farm in Macedonia,” the spokesman said.

As of Wednesday, Trump’s fourteen remaining Twitter followers included his daughter Ivanka; his sons Eric and Donald, Jr.; several White House aides; and someone named Heinrich Himmler III.

Dang, Andy! Isn’t that fourteen too many? RESIST!!
