It’s that time of week again, and here are three fine video clips from Sam’s show last night.  Enjoy!!

America’s Long-Standing Tradition of Police Brutality

Republicans falsely claim that it’s a just few bad apples. That’s a lie. There are enough bad cops that the good cops are afraid to stand up to them.

Legislating Healing and Justice with Ayanna Pressley

Kudos to Ayanna Pressley. We need to replace Bought Bitch Midnight Moscow Mitch and all Republican Senators with people like her!

It’s Time to Defund the Police

If by “defund the police” we mean muzzling police unions, repurposing funds going to military equipment for police to help the community, and red-lining expenditures for programs that Republican police use to terrorize citizens, I’m all for it.  The Republican contention that this means leaving us without police protection is a lie.

Good one, Sam!

  1. Love Sam.
    W/watch later on w/hubs.
    Thanks!!

  2. Police – There are a lot of factors to this, and Republicans are behind most of them. Fear of other cops by decent cops is one of them. Unions backing violent cops to keep them in their jobs is another. Military weapons is another big one. And it’s also true that everyone, including the police themselves, has forgotten where that “a few bad apples” comes from. The saying is, “One bad apple spoils the whole barrel.” We have proof that is true of police as well.

Where are the leaders? There are some in the House f Representatives, and there are some in the Senate too. But in the Senate they are outnumbered, and since the House and the Senate must agree, that trumps (sorry) the House and its leaders. There is no leadership in the executive branch. None. There are three leaders in the Supreme Court. (OT I love the way these two beautiful women click. And what a sweet surprise at the tail.)

Defund – All it means is using the power of the purse to direct police activity into the right channels, and fund other activity which the police should not be requires to tackle. Of course, it’s a word that scares a lot of people. There was a Daily Kos diary yesterday about this one word. With, of course, Democrats arguing over what word to use. Ken Burns, if you are listening, start right now to document what Minneapolis is doing, because from here it looks pretty good, and could maybe be something for other cities to follow or adapt.

  3. I will be back later, but want to put this out:

  4. The police have a much greater problem then just a “few bad apples”.

Whether you believe that a solid argument can be made that it’s systemic – that the tree itself is diseased – is probably a never-ending argument.

But the major point is that some professions simply cannot harbor a “few bad apples”.

Like pilots.  I doubt United would get much support for contending that “Most of our pilots are really dedicated to landing our jets carrying passengers safely – but we have a few bad apples …”

    Like healthcare professions.  Like Police!

No matter how few it might be, they need to be culled out.

    • I have been trying to think of a profession or occupation which would tolerate a”a few bad apples.”  I haven’t been able to think of one yet.  Plumber?  Computer programmer?  Accountant?  Retail sales (or wholesale for that matter)?  Waitstaff?  Any of those peole would e O – U – T.  But you’re right – in policing and a few others, it’s not only life or death to the organization, but also to the consumer.

  5. Maybe every city and county should do as Camden, NJ did – disband their police departments, then rebuild them from the bottom up.

The problem with “Defund The Police” is it sounds as though people want to get rid of cops together. A VERY bad idea! Police are a necessity, and not a necessary evil. We can have better policing, more accountability and transparency, more contact between cops and the communities they protect and serve. We need to punish bad cops and make examples of them. We need to end the militarization of the police and the ridiculous “war on drugs.” We can have better policing and better constables.

  6. Great videos by Sam this week.
I agree with Freya’s comment regarding “Defund The Police”. We do need them, but need to have better policies. more accountability and transparency.
I was shocked to hear that the officer that killed Mr. Floyd had 18 complaints on his record, yet he was still out there. He should of been punish a long time ago. The Police need to make sure of that from now on.

  7. Thanks for posting, TomCat; will watch later.

  8. Thanks and TGIF Hugs to all. 26

We should replace Defund with Reorganize.
