A Flash in the Pan

The picture (see below) is of Republican Nazis demonstrating at the Willamette River Waterfront in downtown Portland.  They were just a few blocks south from directly across the river from me.  I indicated the location of the shiny new CatBox with a blue arrow.  I could not see the, as trees blocked my view.  That’s OK.  Trees look better than Republicans do anyway.  The demonstrators moved South and West, away from the river.  After all the hype, it was a flash in the pan.

Portland saw its largest far-right demonstration of the Trump era on Saturday, as 500 rightwingers traveled from around the country to march back and forth across the city’s bridges, and briefly occupy a patch of its waterfront.

By making extensive accommodations for the unpermitted rightwing protest, including close police escorts, concrete barriers, and reopening a bridge to allow them to leave the downtown area, Portland authorities succeeded in preventing head-on confrontations between it and a much larger counter-protest.

The far right “end domestic terrorism” protest, organized by leaders in the “western chauvinst” Proud Boys fraternity, saw Trump supporters rub shoulders with more radical groups, including Three Percenters, a “patriot movement” militia group, and American Guard, who the Anti-Defamation League described as “hardcore white supremacists”…  [emphasis added]

Here’s a video clip: Right-Wing Groups, Anti-Fascist Protesters Swarm Downtown Portland

It was the most peaceful protest Trump’s Nazi-Republican Proud Boys and Antifa, many of whom are Anarchist Nut-jobs, have ever had, thanks to good crowd management by the police.

  1. You weren’t too far away either!
I’m relieved that this is over and that no one was hurt.
Glad the goose flew away too.

The mayor did an excellent job, with crowd control, btw… lol

  2. Do give some credit to the actual non-violent protesters who showed up too. I liked the dancing bananas, but I LOVED the dancing unicorn. I’m extremely glad there wasn’t any real blood.

    Here’s the unicorn:

    This is pretty good too:

  3. Thank goodness you were far enough away that the stench wouldn’t bother you.

As for violent people on the left, there’s bound to be a loose cannon in every sufficiently large organization. The best thing for Progressives to do is make it clear that our demonstrations are peaceful and that we do not condone violence – and distance ourselves from any @$$holes.

  4. The counter protesters had a collection going (amount per number sponsoring) based on how many right wingers showed up with funds going to a pro-immigrant group–I liked thathttps://www.huffpost.com/entry/portland-rally-fascist-money-pledged-to-immigrant-group_n_5d562b52e4b0eb875f2178ef?fbclid=IwAR1u0HY-oEEQbFCocT8gt7D67lL1gXnc_AbycEW7Wqa8af07_bjHx7DRTWg

  5. I’m happy it was on the other side of the river away from you.
I too am glad to see that there were peaceful protesters, not violence going on.

  6. I liked the Banana’s Bloc version of the Gadsden flag:

  7. It may have been only a flash in the pan, but I found the reason for the Proud Boys and their cronies to have a demonstration in Portland rather unsettling.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-La.) today introduced a resolution to the U.S. Senate condemning the violent acts carried out by members of Antifa and calling for the designation of the group as a domestic terrorist organization.

After the El Paso shooting there was a renewed call to make domestic terrorism, which notably is a right-wing phenomenon, a crime. And what do Cruz and his buddies come up with? Of course, in another attempt to stifle the left, Antifa is the one pointed to and labelled a domestic terrorist organization because some members assaulted, i.e. not shot or killed, a right-wing journalist. No extreme-right organizations were worth mentioning. So, then it is quite OK if organizations like the Proud Boys demonstrate for this resolution to be passed, right?

  8. Thanks and hurried hugs to all. 26
