Everyday Erinyes #230

Experts in autocracies have pointed out that it is, unfortunately, easy to slip into normalizing the tyrant, hence it is important to hang on to outrage. These incidents which seem to call for the efforts of the Greek Furies (Erinyes) to come and deal with them will, I hope, help with that. As a reminder, though no one really knows how many there were supposed to be, the three names we have are Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone. These roughly translate as “unceasing,” “grudging,” and “vengeful destruction.”

There are many aspects of life that one doesn’t find out about until one is, for want of a better word, exposed to them If this is true of life in general, how mush more is it true of a pandemic. Lona sent me a link to an article on the use of solitary confinement in ICE immigration detention centers, thinking the Furies might be interested. And they are. I see three issues here – first, prisons in general – the prison systems, the state of prison facilities, the conditions for those who work in prisons as well as those who are living there, for whatever reason, for whatever length of time. Second is the whole issue of solitary confinement within prisons, how it affects those who are kept in it, and especially for long periods of time, what it is like to be in it as opposed to outside of it but still in the prison – all of that. Third is the pandemic itself. Prisons, be they correctional or immigration prisons, are charged with the duty of keeping their inmates safe, including from the coronavirus. They do not always succeed in that duty (As we know from other horror stories, some don’t try very hard.)

The article begins with a story from Carlos Hernandez Corbacho. Mr. Hernandez Corbacho, and his wife Maydel Curbelo Perez, fled Cuba on account of the attention they were receiving from police on account of their open and vocal criticism of government. They came to the US by a route including Nicaragua and moving up through Central America to Nogales, Mexico, which borders Arizona. They presented themselves to CBP for political asylum, a perfectly legal thing for them to do. This happened about last November, after a roughly five-month journey. Curbelo Perez won asylum in March. then came CoViD, and Hernandez Corbacho’s court dates kept getting postponed. He won asylum August 19, but not until having been stranded in ICE detention for about five months.

He felt his first symptom in June. “But he said he was afraid to say anything. He’d heard rumors of officials locking detainees with COVID-19 symptoms in solitary, and wanted to put it off as long as possible.” One can hardly blame him. And that’s part of the problem. “Placing COVID-19 patients in solitary confinement, experts say, is inhumane and jeopardizes the overall population by deterring detainees from reporting symptoms. (emphasis mine)

Solitary confinement was never intended to be used for quarantine. However, I don’t know what other facilities an ICE detention center might have or have access to. At any rate, that’s what was used, and the experience was terrible.

I cannot embed, but I can link to, a statement by Mr.Hernandez Corbacho, in a video format, in Spanish, but woth CC in English.

“In an emailed statement, ICE said that its quarantine practices are not a punitive measure and are conducted in accordance with the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control guidelines.” Well, that can be true, and still have absolutely nothing to do with what it feels like to an asylum seeker – or anyone else in that position. Even if not filthy, as it sadly often is, it can be very hard on people. One thing which does not occur to people who have never been near such a thing, and trying to imagine it, is that it is generally incredibly noisy. That alone can feel like being beaten. Mr. Hernandez Corbacho alludes to this. So did Colorado’s head correctional officer, who voluntarily spent 24 hours in solitary confinement soon after he took the position, in order to have the experience. I’m an introvert, but the noise level and quality they describe would drive me up a wall very fast.

And yet, dear Furies, I am going to give the low level employees, aorking in these conditions, many of them just trying to do a job they see as necessary while at the same time doing their best to support their family – I am going to give them a pass. They are not what is wrong. What is wrong is our as a society massive failure to address any of these massive ills – prison, ICE, and CoViD – until they all hit at the same time.

Instead, I am going to ask your help at this point to get guilty and incompetent Republicans out of government and replace them with innocent and competent Democrats, and THEN we can tackle all of these problems. Perhaps Alecto would like to take prisons, Megaera would consider auditing ICE, and Tisiphone would tackle the pandemic, along with our preparedness – or the lack of it – for another one or more.

Before I sign off, I would like to give one example of credit where credit is due. This article looks at numerous prisons in numerous places, and in the process they spoke with CoreCivic.

CoreCivic — which contracts with ICE to run La Palma and a number of other detention centers — denies that their facilities use solitary confinement.

“The claim that solitary confinement is used in our facilities is patently false,” CoreCivic spokesperson Ryan Gustin said. “Like most public and private secure facilities during this pandemic, we use separate housing units within our facilities to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 when someone is confirmed positive for the virus.”

As a corporation I would not trust CoreCivic as far as I could throw one of their facilities, barbed wire and all. However, as the spouse of an inmate in a CoreCivic facility, who regularly speaks with him on the phone, I can testify almost first hand that “separate housing units within our facilities” is exactly what they are using there, and that it has kept and is keeping him virus free. (The inmates do have masks and are encouraged to use them and to practice social distance also, within the housing units.) I probably should add this is not the only CoreCivic facility he has been in, and that this one is run in a way noticeably superior to the other. So this may in fact the only one of their facilities which is keeping that promise – but at least this one is.  He would not be any safer if he were at home, and in fact he would almost certainly be less safe here.

The Furies and I will be back.

Martin Luther King, Jr. influenced my political thinking more than any other individual.  I was fortunate to have worked under him on Vietnam Summer and to have been present on the Washington Mall fifty-seven years ago today on August 28, 1963. It’s hard to believe that we are once again fighting the battle to secure the voting rights won as a result of his dream, and to restore them, where racist Republicans are outlawing the right to vote. Will his dream survive? This is almost a repost of last years article.  I updated it to fit the situation today.

Last night Trump* violated the Hatch Act by using the White House Rose Garden as an Republican National Convention prop.  He spewed an unprecedented stream of lies, hate, and racism, while blaming Democrats and Blacks for the plague and economic devastation spread by his own incompetence.  If Trump* can steal the 2020 election, America as we knew it will cease to be.  Never before has there been such a threat that Dr. King’s dream will be destroyed by the Republican Reich!  Will it survive or will defacto slavery, in which Blacks, Latinos and poor Whites slave to serve the interests of greedy Republican billionaires and corporate criminals? The choice is Dr. Kings dream or a permanent National Socialist Republican Reich.  The outcome of that choice depends on what YOU do NOW!

It’s another tired day, here in the CatBox.  I overslept again this morning, but I still took a morning nap.  Then I overslept from that too, so I’m running somewhat behind schedule.  Last night I got to tell WWWendy she’s full of shit.  She used my toilet and plugged it.  That’s what happens when you get too many Republicans in one place.  Fortunately she unplugged it too.  Happy Hump Day!

RNC Deplorables Take:

Night two of the RNC was more of the same.

I was particularly taken with the abject hypocrisy of der Reichsminister der Staat, Mike Pompeo.  Do you remember how Republicans screamed when the Chicks (then Dixie Chicks) criticized GW ChickenHawk, Fuhrer of the failed Fourth Reich, for lying about his failed attempt to conquer Iraq for oil and profit?  Then Republicans claimed that all politics stops at the water’s edge.  But last night, Pompeo delivered his totally political message, praising Trump’s* failed foreign policy, from Jerusalem.  Republican pseudo-Christians (the opposite of real authentic Christians) loved it, but it was unethical at best, if not criminal.

The following is a summary of everything that occurred:

Short Takes:

From USA Today: Hurricane Laura, which grew to a Category 3 storm early Wednesday, is forecast to bring “potentially catastrophic” storm surge, fierce winds and flash flooding to eastern Texas and Louisiana on Wednesday night and early Thursday, the National Hurricane Center says.

More than half a million people were ordered to evacuate as the storm approached, including the Texas cities of Beaumont, Galveston and Port Arthur.

Even if Laura reaches Category 4 strength during the day on Wednesday, forecasters still expect the storm to hit near the Texas-Louisiana border as a Category 3 hurricane, as it’s predicted to weaken slightly before landfall. The storm has already intensified a “remarkable” amount in the past 24 hours, the storm center says.

Laura is growing in size, too. “Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 175 miles,” forecasters said.

Aren’t we lucky that criminal Fuhrer Trump and the Republican Reich stole FEMA’s operating funds? The poor that are devastated by this Republicane are SOL. But what will Republicans raid to pay for slightest storm damage to the property of billionaires: Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, aid to starving children? If you’re in Laura’s path, please tale care.  RESIST!!

Of course the Reich on the left, Robert Reich, is right, while the Reich on the right, the Republican Reich, don’t care how wrong they are. They’re too busy having wet dreams over criminal Fuhrer Trump*. They chose him to be their beloved Fifth Reich Fuhrer, because he reflects the ideas, values and policies of the Republican Reich better than anyone since the original Fuhrer, who lead the Third Reich! But how did Robert limit it to just 40?  RESIST!!

The Showdown at Chicken Liver Gulch:

Yesterday, there was some hilarity here.  At my request WWWendy sautéed and gooped some chicken livers.  Now Wendy’s opinion of liver is considerably worse than my opinion of Trump*.  It was delicious, and I had some for lunch with guacamole, aka goopamole.  I often feed her bites of goopamole, when  I eat it, so I did so yesterday.  I had teasingly asked her if she’d like a bite of liver to see the strength of her NO!  So when I offered her the goopamole, she decided that I was using goopamole to hide the liver underneath.  Although I have never done anything mean to her, it took me several minutes to convince her that I would not do such a thing, and she enjoyed the goopamole.  In fact, I was so considerate that I gargled with Listerine, so I could hug her goodbye without liver on my breath.  It was so good, I had more for breakfast.

Short Takes:

From CNN: Maryanne Trump Barry bitterly criticized her brother, President Donald Trump, saying, “Donald’s out for Donald,” and appeared to confirm her niece Mary Trump’s previous allegations that he had a friend take his SATs to get into college, according to audio excerpts obtained by CNN.

The Washington Post first obtained the previously unreleased transcripts and audio from Mary Trump, author of a recent bombshell book about the President and one of his most outspoken critics. Mary Trump, who has said that Donald Trump is unfit to be president and has voiced support for his rival Joe Biden, revealed to the Post that she had secretly taped 15 hours of face-to-face conversations with Barry in 2018 and 2019.

In one of the conversations revealed by the Post, Trump’s sister called him “cruel.”

Among the some of the more critical comments made by Barry was commenting on how her younger 74-year-old brother operated as president. “His goddamned tweet and lying, oh my God,” she said, according to the recording. “I’m talking too freely, but you know. The change of stories. The lack of preparation. The lying. Holy shit.”

This is nothing new to us, but it might influence those few, who are still on the fence.  RESIST!!

From NY Times: Tropical Storms Marco and Laura continued to churn in the Caribbean on Saturday, prompting a wave of warnings and watches for several countries, and leading the governor of Louisiana to declare a state of emergency.

Marco on Saturday was about 110 miles northwest of the western tip of Cuba, with maximum sustained winds of 65 miles per hour, the National Hurricane Center said on Saturday night.

Mr. Cline said it was possible that both storms would become hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico as early as Monday. He added that it would be “pretty unusual” and that the last time it happened was in 1933. The last time a hurricane and a tropical storm were both in the Gulf of Mexico was in 1959, he said…[emphasis added]

Note that for the second time, criminal Fuhrer Trump* has stolen FEMA funds to pay for his scams. First, he did so in 2019 to pay for the wall that never happened. Second, he did so to pay for the Unemployment relief that nobody received. I doubt that he will put the money back, even though hurricanes are on the way.  RESIST!!

It’s a sickly day here in the CatBox.  I experimented with a new kind of goop this morning, and sometimes such experiments fail.  It blocked my tumor, and I spent most of the morning throwing up.  On the plus side, most of my goop experiments have been successful, giving me a variety of tasty things to eat.  TGIF!

Blasting her penchant for hewing to the rules of grammar, Trump said, “A lot of people are saying, mean, nasty, disrespectful. To a new level, like you wouldn’t believe.”

Short Takes:

From The New Yorker: In a rare instance of praising one of his White House predecessors, Donald J. Trump on Tuesday hailed Woodrow Wilson for opposing efforts to institute online learning during the 1918 pandemic.

“There were a lot of crybabies in 1918 saying, ‘The schools aren’t safe—let the kids learn on their computers,’ ” Trump told reporters at the White House. “Woody wouldn’t hear of it.”

Instead, Trump said, “Kids went to school and the influenza just kind of disappeared eventually. Woody did a fantastic job.”

Dang, Andy! Are you sure he didn’t praise Wilson because of his overt racism and KKK support?  RESIST!!

From Alternet: Remember when political reporters crowed about what a masterful play Majority Leader Mitch McConnell had made when he lined up his caucus to acquit Donald Trump without hearing from a single witness? Yeah, that acquittal came on February 6 when U.S. senators were already getting briefed on the seriousness of the coronavirus’ spread abroad.

But Senate Republicans, led by McConnell, fell all over themselves to make sure Trump was at the helm when the pandemic hit U.S. shores. Now, what once looked like a promising cycle for Senate Republicans has turned entirely treacherous precisely because the caucus is saddled with Trump as their standard bearer.

Politico reports the party is directing nearly its entire $100 million war chest at saving the seats of eight incumbent senators while the few GOP candidates aiming to defeat a Democrat have been left almost entirely to their own devices. With the exception of funneling a little money into the effort to defeat Democratic Sen. Doug Jones in Alabama, they simply don’t have the resources to play offense.

The seat of Democratic Sen. Gary Peters from Michigan, for instance, once seemed like a flippable seat. But as Trump has tanked in the state and Joe Biden is presently positioned very well there, Senate Republicans have left Republican candidate John James to fend for himself.

Instead, GOP groups, including the National Republican Senatorial Committee and the McConnell-aligned Senate Leadership Fund have been trying to bolster their defenses in Georgia, Iowa, and Montana—three states that weren’t even on the radar as potential Democratic pick ups when the cycle started.

I wonder how much of that money is going to help Bought Bitch Midnight Moscow Mitch. This shows how desperate the Republican Reich has become. May all their efforts fail!  RESIST!!

Criminal Fuhrer Trump* had an interview on Axios with Jonathan Swan.  I was vaguely aware of it, but when I opened my email this morning, I found a link from Lona that zeroed me in on how important it is.  Kudos to Jonathan Swan and Lona.

0805SwanTrump

The President has implemented this strategy for the past five months, repeatedly touting “the pandemic is totally under control”, as cases and deaths have spiralled [sic].

It’s a message many within the medical world have criticised [sic] as being disconnected from reality and a danger to public health.

Swan pressed Trump on whether “wishful thinking” and “salesmanship” was an appropriate leadership style for handling the worst pandemic of the century, which has killed more than 150,000 Americans.

“Right now, I think it’s under control,” Trump said at one point.

“How? A thousand Americans are dying a day,” Swan interjected.

“They are dying, that’s true. And you ha… It is what it is,” Trump replied…

Inserted from <ABC News Australia>

That single horrific line may summarize both the interview and criminal Fuhrer Trump’s* total lack of empathy, but Swan was on Trump’s* case from beginning to end.  He did such a god job, that I’m including the entire 38 minute interview.  Unfortunately that’s also a lot of Trump*
