It’s another busy day.  I overslept and got a late start.  I met with the Community Services Manager here to put in an application for a room in the Alder, a building in the neighborhood that is finishing a complete remodel like the one starting here.  If one of their units will fit my size needs, and their handicapped shower will fit my disability needs, I should know next week and can plan to move in late April or May.  What a pain!

From The New Yorker: Amid reports that Donald Trump might soon be summoned to appear before Robert Mueller, the White House doctor wrote a note on Wednesday indicating that Trump was too sick to talk to the special counsel.

“Donald Trump is not well,” Dr. Ronny Jackson wrote.

The doctor’s note offered a laundry list of ailments afflicting Trump, including flu-like symptoms, upset stomach, headaches, dizziness, confusion, and what Jackson called a “wartime foot injury that appears to be acting up.”

Jackson acknowledged in the note that his current assessment of Trump’s health was at odds with the robust picture he painted last week, but added, “Every patient is entitled to a second opinion, and this is mine.”

Dang Andy! Do you think it’s a case of Raving Bullshititis? RESIST!!

On Shooting Senate Democrats

Posted by at 1:24 pm  Politics
Jan 242018

When Senate Democrats agrees to end the Republican Shutdown without passing a fix for dreamers, my initial action was anger.  I considered the Senators who voted against ending the Republican Shutdown heroes and still do.  How those Democrats who voted for the deal were not traitors, and the did not abandon the Dreamers.  They employed what they considered the best strategy, so before we consider shooting them (in jest), we should see how it works out.

0124Schumer

[L]iberal Democrats and progressive activists reacted angrily on Monday after a majority of Senate Democrats voted to enable the federal government to reopen after a three-day shutdown. “It’s morally reprehensible and it’s political malpractice,” Ezra Levin, a former Capitol Hill staffer who co-founded the anti-Trump Indivisible Group, declared. “Schumer led the [Senate] caucus off the cliff.” Markos Moulitsas, the founder of the Daily Kos, accused the Senate Democrats of aiding Republican efforts to block an immigration deal that would protect the Dreamers.

The critics’ arguments merit serious consideration. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s promise to take up immigration legislation when the spending bill expires in three weeks hardly amounted to a firm commitment to extend legal protections for the Dreamers, which will begin to lapse at the start of March. “The idea that they are gonna take a pinky-swear promise from Senator McConnell after he’s broken so many promises, it’s political malpractice—it’s absurd to believe that,” Levin said. “The only answer is that [they] aren’t actually interested in fighting for the Dreamers.”

That last comment was unfair. In their pursuit of a legislative deal for the Dreamers, Schumer and other Democratic senators took the highly contentious step of shutting down the government. If McConnell doesn’t follow through on his promises, they may well do the same thing again in three weeks’ time. Reopening the government was a tactical move, not a betrayal of the Dreamers. Whether it was the right tactical move won’t be clear for a while, but it was certainly a defensible one, especially in view of the broader political environment.

Progressives worry that Schumer and his colleagues will capitulate again in February, which could happen. But a number of things will be different then. For one thing, they will already have assured six years of funding for chip, the public health-insurance program that serves six million children. As my colleague Amy Davidson Sorkin pointed out yesterday, the inclusion of long-term funding in the new short-term spending resolution amounts to a “solid victory” for Democrats… [emphasis added]

Inserted from <The New Yorker>

I urge you to click through and finish the New Yorker article for an in depth explanation of their assertion.

One thing that the article does not cover is that, while the polls taken at the time of the shutdown blamed Republicans more than Democrats, Democrats were getting more blame for it with each passing day.  In addition, voters favored ending the shutdown over holding out for an immediate fix for Dreamers by an almost two to one margin.

Continuing the shutdown had no chance of success for Dreamers, because Republicans are happy to let Americans suffer.

It’s a very busy day.  Store to Door delivered groceries, which I unpacked and put away.  I got a haircut.  I was so shaggy that I’m temped to act like a Sheeple and say BA-A-A-A-A-A!  Wendy is coming this evening to de-stink the TomCat and help with chores.  Carrie’s husband Barry is improving.  His kidneys are working again.

From YouTube (Parody Project Channel): STORMY (DANIELS) – A parody of "Stormy"

I wonder if Stormy rained on Putin’s Piddle Puppet. RESIST!!

From Washington Post: Rep. Patrick Meehan (R-Pa.) sought to defend himself against an accusation of sexual harassment Tuesday, saying he “developed an affection” for a decades-younger staffer he considered his “soul mate” but never sought a romantic or sexual relationship with her.

I don’t buy it.  The only souls Republican Congress critters have are the souls they are: ass-souls! RESIST!!

From Think Progress: There’s never been a ballot measure asking voters to weigh funding for the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) Medicaid expansion until Oregon’s. On Tuesday, voters statewide were asked to decide whether to keep taxing insurance companies and hospitals to pay for health insurance or tell the state legislature to return to the drawing board and think of something else. They chose the former.

Expanding Medicaid coverage to all people living in poverty has been a decades-long priority for Oregon. But covering everyone — not just pregnant women, kids, seniors, and adults with disabilities — who lives 100 percent below the federal poverty level led to some budget setbacks over the years. So when the federal government agreed to pay for 100 percent of the costs associated, at least for a few years, Oregon opted to further expand Medicaid coverage to people living up to 138 percent of poverty.

Now 94 percent of Oregonians have health insurance — one of the nation’s highest insured rates.

Last year, states needed to start pitching in financially; per the health law, the federal government’s financial share fell to 95 percent in 2017 and will fall to 90 percent by 2020. How Oregon intends to pay for its share is on Tuesday’s ballot.

By voting yes to Measure 101, voters upheld temporary taxes passed by the state legislature and okay-ed by the governor last year. (Three Republican state legislators who opposed the taxes petitioned to get the bill on the ballot.) The 1.5 percent tax on some insurers and managed care organizations and 0.7 percent tax on large hospitals would raise anywhere between $210 to $320 million over the next two years. (Due to a federal labor law, states can’t tax self-insured plans.) The measure also raises revenue for the state’s reinsurance program, which helps lower premiums for plans offered on the Obamacare marketplace.

This actually costs me money, because the Insurance Network, Providence, that offers my Medicare Advantage plan is one paying the tax, and my income is barely above the level required for the benefit. Nevertheless, I was proud to vote for it. Oregon leads the way!  RESIST!!

Prepare for Round 2

Posted by at 1:00 pm  Politics
Jan 232018

After thinking the matter over, I think there is a reasonable chance that Senate Republicans will honor the promise of a DACA vote, and that a relief for Dreamers will pass the Senate.  Why would Senate Republicans act so out of character?  They will benefit by appearing reasonable to more voters, and they know that no matter what they pass, it is doubtful that Lyin’ Ryan will ever allow the House to vote on it.  So we’d better prepare for Round 2.

RepublicanShutdown

Time, on its own, doesn’t assuage racism. White power concedes nothing without a vigorous fight, and the fantasy that racism is a problem that can just be waited out is an absolute delusion. That’s part of America’s problem: it continually asks black and brown people to sit tight, stand down, never gripe or protest, and naively hope that a country that has repeatedly betrayed and abused them will miraculously do the right thing. That’s what’s happening with DACA right now, and the frustration of watching this familiar scene play out is maddening.

The DACA fight, including the 60-hour recent government shutdown, has been about racism from day one. Donald Trump’s well-documented white supremacist bonafides dating back to his discriminatory real estate practices in the 1970s are legion, and the evidence has come fast and furious over the last two years. There was the launch of his presidential bid with a speech that cast all Mexicans as criminals, the judge he insulted based solely on his Mexican heritage, his promise to his supporters to enact policies specifically designed to hurt people of color, and his sympathizing with the “very fine [group of] people” who murdered an anti-racism protester. By the time word leaked that Trump had moaned about immigrants from “shithole countries,” the statement only confirmed what was obvious. Trump believes DACA allows shithole-caliber black and brown people to live in this country at a moment he is desperately trying to Make America Aryan Again, apparently with a huge influx of Norwegians.

Trump isn’t alone in this effort, he’s backed by a White House full of racist xenophobes. Senior Trump staffer Stephen Miller has a record of anti-immigrant racism that dates back to junior high school, when he reportedly unfriended a schoolmate for being Latino, and his undergrad days at Duke University, where he railed against “multiculturalism” and hung out with notoriously punchable Nazi Richard Spencer. The first hint that White House Chief of Staff John Kelly might be a racist was his willingness work for Trump. Since taking the job, he has solidified his stance by singing Robert E. Lee‘s praises, defending monuments to the Confederacy, and promoting the idea that slavery wasn’t such a bad institution if you just get into the mindset of white slaveowners (and John Kelly, apparently). He has also been relentless in advancing this administration’s xenophobic goals. “In just six months, Kelly turned [the Department of Homeland Security] into a deportation machine” notes the the Nation’s Julianne Hing, “translat[ing] much of Trump’s brazen anti-immigrant campaign rhetoric into actual policy."…

It’s been a hectic day.  Management let me know several months ago that they are doing a major remodel on this building and all residents will have to move in late Spring or early Summer.  They will find me a suitable location in one of their other buildings and pay for professional movers to make the move.  Nevertheless, the prep work and move itself will be horrid.  This week, it’s starting, and we’re doing needs analysis.  UGH!  Please Remember Carrie B, whom most of you know from Care2, and her husband Barry in your thoughts and prayers.  Barry was just admitted to the hospital with a diagnosis of kidney failure.  Thank you.

Short Takes:

From YouTube (Media Matters Channel): Women’s March 2018

To be fair, the Women’s March happened concurrently with the Republican Shutdown, and with those media outlets that did not ignore the protests by design, they fell through the cracks for coverage. That was still wrong, bit not intentional.  RESIST!!

From Washington Post: FBI Director Christopher A. Wray has been resisting pressure from Attorney General Jeff Sessions to replace the bureau’s deputy director, Andrew McCabe, a frequent target of criticism from President Trump, according to people familiar with the matter.

You can bet that came from the Fuhrer! RESIST!!

From Common Dreams: Pennsylvania’s high court on Monday ruled that the state’s gerrymandered congressional map "clearly, plainly, and palpably" violates the state constitution and ordered the state to draw up a new map to be used in the primary.

"The Pennsylvania Supreme Court today ruled in favor of voters choosing politicians rather than politicians choosing voters, and that is major victory for all Pennsylvanians," said Karen Hobert Flynn, president of Common Cause, which filed an amicus brief in the case. "The court order will result in new maps in time for the 2018 election so that voters will not be forced to face a fourth congressional election under these unconstitutionally gerrymandered congressional districts."

The split decision is the result of a lawsuit brought forth by the Pennsylvania League of Women Voters and 17 individual voters who argued (pdf) that the current map, drawn in 2011 by the GOP-controlled legislature, "was the product of a national movement by the Republican Party to entrench its own representatives in power by utilizing the latest advances in mapmaking technologies and big data to gerrymander districts more effectively than ever before."

Reuters notes that "[e]xperts have long held up Pennsylvania as one of the most extreme examples of partisan gerrymandering."

Kudos!! I understand that Democrats should pick up at least five HR seats because of this, alone. RESIST!!

Bernie Sanders made an appearance on "State of the Union" on Sunday morning, where he discussed the Republican Shutdown, and an ad just released by the reelection campaign of the Rouge Racist, Donald Trump.  Do you remember the Willy Horton ad released by GHW "Barfer" Bush?  Compared to Trump’s that ad was kind

0122BernieBlastOn CNN’s Sunday morning show "State of the Union," Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) cast the Republican Party’s refusal to protect young immigrants as a grave mistake and echoed other Democrats’ statements that he would be willing to negotiate on a border wall in order to keep "Dreamers" safe from deportation.

In his interview with Jake Tapper, the senator denounced an ad released by President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign which portrayed Democratic lawmakers as "complicit" in any murder committed by an undocumented immigrant.

"It is really unbelievable and so sad for our country that we have a president of the United States who says such nonsense and such outrageous statements," Sanders said, adding that the vast majority of Americans support  protections for Dreamers—about 800,000 undocumented immigrants who arrived in the U.S. as children and have been protected by the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which Trump has moved to repeal.

"They need a path towards citizenship. That’s not my view. That is the overwhelming view of the American people," Sanders said. "Then you see a president put stuff like that on the air trying to divide us up, trying to foment hatred? It is—it is really sad."…

Short Takes:

From Washington Post: The United States will open its embassy in Jerusalem next year, Vice President Pence said Monday, accelerating plans to move the mission in line with the Trump administration’s controversial decision to recognize the city as Israel’s capital.

Claiming support for Israel, Pence and the Republican Supply-side pseudo-Christians are trying to board their freight train to Armageddon, where they believe they can enjoy seeing all but 144,000 Jews fried into crispy critters. RESIST!!

From SI Live: Global temperatures in 2017 were the second warmest on record since 1880, according to NASA.

Last year’s temperatures were second only to 2016, which holds the record for the hottest year since 1880, when global estimates first started.

Earth’s average temperatures in 2017 were 1.62 degrees warmer than the 1951 to 1990 mean, according to scientists at NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York.

Ladies, get out your bikinis. Soon the Alaskan Riviera will be open for tropical fun. RESIST!!

From Washington Post: These are the Democratic heroes that voted against the foolish cave-in.

Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.)
Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.)
Kamala D. Harris (D-Calif.)

Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.)
Chris Murphy (D-Conn.)
Jon Tester (D-Mont.)
Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.)
Ron Wyden (D-Ore.)
Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.)

The rest intended well and were trying to negotiate in good faith, but when has a promise from Bought Bitch Mitch ever been worth more than paper, after you wipe your ass with it.

This is my only article today.  I have not slept well and am very tired.  It’s a high holy day in the Church of the Ellipsoid Orb with Conference Final meditations to watch.  I wonder if someone deflated Brady’s balls.  WWWendy is going to a temporary bartending job today, so she’s coming an hour early to destink the smelly TomCat and help with chores.  She will probably arrive before I finish this.  I hope you are having a great second day of the Republican shutdown.

From Bloomberg: President Donald Trump says on Twitter that if the shutdown stalemate continues, Republicans should consider the so-called “nuclear option” in the Senate, which would allow them to vote on a long-term budget with a simple majority and no more continuing resolutions. “The Dems just want illegal immigrants to pour into our nation unchecked,” Trump says to kick off a day seen as the final chance for a rapid end to the shutdown.

It wouldn’t surprise me if they did it. I am surprised they haven’t done it sooner. RESIST!!

From The New Yorker: Calling it “the least I can do for my country,” the White House press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, said on Saturday morning that she would lie for free during the government shutdown.

“Now more than ever it’s important that the stream of falsehoods and distortions from this White House continues to flow in a steady and uninterrupted fashion,” Sanders said. “To achieve that, for the duration of the government shutdown I will be lying on a pro-bono basis.”

Sanders said that Donald Trump had asked that she keep a full accounting of the lies she told during the shutdown so that she could be reimbursed for them later, but she turned down that offer. “I’ve often said that I like to lie so much I would do it for free,” she said. “This is a chance to put my money where my mouth is.”

Dang Andy! For Upchuckabee-Sanders, lying for free is like a bear shitting in the woods for free. RESIST!!
