After a long two month absence, it’s that time of week again, and I’m happy to share four fine video clips from Bill’s show last night.  Enjoy!

Monologue: Trump’s Tighty Whities

Bill is right. The tighty whities are Trump’s deplorable voters.

Michael Wolff: Current Affairs

Many other psychopaths and sociopaths, like Trump, could easily pass the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, which tests for dementia, not psychotic conditions or personality disorders.

Saru Jayaraman: Forked

Now, in my youth, I lived well on tips, working as a waiter for a year, and I never showed more cleavage. Dang!!  If only I had known!

New Rule: Distinction Deniers

I agree with Bill, except that Pence is worse than ISIS.  Pence and his Fuhrer are responsible for the deaths of more innocents.

It there ever was a day we needed comic relief, this is the day!

It’s another stinky, muggy day, and I slept poorly.  I can’t wait for shower day tomorrow.  Welcome to the first day of the second year of Trump’s Russian Republican Reich and the first day of the Republican Shutdown.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 2:58 (average 4:44).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From YouTube (MoveOn Channel): This is Trump’s Shutdown

Even then, Trump was lying. Last night, after the Senate vote failed, Schumer even offered Trump funding, as demanded, for the wall. Trump refused. RESIST!!

From The New Yorker: Donald J. Trump is “scared to death” that the 2020 Presidential election will be decided by Americans, an aide to Trump has confirmed.

The aide, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said that Trump is panicking over a doomsday scenario in which Americans, sidelined during the 2016 election, play a dominant role in influencing the 2020 contest.

“It sounds paranoid, but, as we speak, representatives of the United States are already plotting to remove him from office in 2020,” the aide said. “They are determined to replace him with someone who takes a move favorable view toward their country.”

The aide said that the Americans, frustrated by Trump’s open hostility to the United States since taking office, will “stop at nothing” to achieve their ultimate goal: installing an agent of the U.S. in the Oval Office.

Andy seems to have a window into Putin’s Pervert’s psyche. RESIST!!

From Politico: “The shutdown rests at the feet of the GOP and it appears a majority of Americans agree”

Michael Steele is a former chairperson of the Republican National Committee.

Despite the rhetorical effort to paste Democrats with “Schumer’s Shutdown” and to redefine what constitutes majority control of the senate (“60”? Really?), the fact remains that this shutdown rests at the feet of the GOP and it appears a majority of Americans agree. I don’t like it. It certainly could have been avoided, but the President wound up negotiating against himself by taking a potential agreement off the table, leaving Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to lament, “As soon as we figure out what he is for, then I would be convinced that we were not just spinning our wheels.” That put Republicans in the position to spin their wheels right into another government shutdown. Pitiful.

We need to call this disaster what it is: the Republican Shutdown! RESIST!!

Another Week Off

Experts in autocracies have pointed out that it is, unfortunately, easy to slip into normalizing the tyrant, hence it is important to hang on to outrage. These incidents which seem to call for the efforts of the Greek Furies (Erinyes) to come and deal with them will, I hope, help with that. Even though there are many more which I can’t include. As a reminder, though no one really knows how many there were supposed to be, the three names we have are Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone. These roughly translate as “unceasing,” “grudging,” and “vengeful destruction.”

But I’ll have to give them another week off. I have been having such problems with browsers this week I have run out of time just trying to keep up routine. I think I have one now that will work, but it will require more setup time than I have to give today.

I don’t want to leave my friends here high and dry altogether though. I want to address the imminent State of the Union word salad.

Many Congressional Dems are already planning to boycott this non-event. Here are short statement from just two, made available by CREDO.

CREDO is suggesting that all Democrats in Congress should boycott the SotU, and I won’t fight with anyone who agrees and chooses to encourage their own representation to boycott. But there is one Congresswoman who, it seems to me, has come up with the perfect alternative to a boycott.

Rep. Dingell invites wife of deported Michigan dad as her State of the Union guest

When Donald Trump looks out over the audience of his State of the Union address at the end of this month, he’ll see the face of Cindy Garcia, an American whose life and family has been torn apart due to his cruel mass deportation policies:

Rep. Debbie Dingell has invited the wife of Jorge Garcia, 39-year-old father deported to Mexico after living in US for 30 years, as her guest for State of the Union.

If you’re going to go, that’s how you should do it, all right.

That’s almost all I have, but as probably everyone knows, Colorado will elect a new Governor this year, and I am trying to learn about all the Democratic candidates, one of whom is Jared Polis. He copied his whole mailing list on an open letter to his daughter, which I will quote without comment on this day of the Second National Women’s March, since it’s self-explanatory:

Cora,

It’s already been one year — and almost a third of your life so far! — since we participated in the big Women’s March in Washington D.C. I’m excited to have the opportunity to march with you again this year in Denver!

I know at the age of three, you’re only just beginning to sense the importance of the fellowship we shared with millions of civic activists around the country last year, and that we will share again tomorrow. And while I’m sad that the first President you will know is not only an unacceptable role model but in many ways a representative of the past that we thought we’d left behind, I am heartened by how our community is responding and resisting.

I hope that as you grow up, you look back on these marches the same way I look back on the equal rights and anti-war rallies I attended with your grandparents when I was a kid. I hope tomorrow’s march helps open the door for you to a lifetime of joining with others to fight for a better, kinder, more equal world.

For all the great things about the world you were born into, there is still a lot of work to do. We still live in a state where a woman earns 81 cents to a man’s dollar. We still live in a nation where a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions is under attack. We still live in a place where sexual harassment and assault happen, and people blame the victim.
I entered public office because I believe in the power of public policy, changing the laws to reflect our values and create a better future. But policy is not the only thing that matters. Many of the problems we face today will not be solved through legislation or by politicians. They’ll be solved by people from all walks of life coming together to break stereotypes, break cultural barriers, and break glass ceilings.

That’s why we marched last year. That’s why we’re planning on marching tomorrow.

Despite the challenges and uncertainty of this moment in our history, there are reasons for hope all around you. From Susan B. Anthony to Rosa Parks to Dolores Huerta, to Colorado’s own Florence Sabin, we’re inspired by the strong women before you that have paved the path toward equality and justice. I’m proud you can look to your own family including your “Gramma” Susan Polis Schutz, who shattered the societal norms of her time to become a successful business woman and bestselling poet, even if she does feed you ice cream when she’s not supposed to.

This is just the start for you. I look forward to you living your life and building the future you desire. Hopefully the glass ceilings will be shattered by the time you get there. But if not bring a hammer.

Love,

Dad

The Furies and I will be back.

Countdown

As I write, a government shutdown is scheduled for a little under eight hours from now.  At this point, it’s dominating the news.  If it happens, and it probably will, the fault will rest 100% with Donald Trump and the Republican Party.  However they have engineered it in such a devious way, that they may be able to convince voters that it’s Democrats’ fault.

0119Shutdown

The House approved a stopgap spending bill on Thursday night to keep the government open past Friday, but Senate Democrats — angered by President Trump’s vulgar aspersions and a lack of progress on a broader budget and immigration deal — appeared ready to block the measure.

The House approved the measure 230 to 197, despite conflicting signals by President Trump sent throughout the day and a threatened rebellion from conservatives that ended up fizzling. But the bill, which would keep the government open through Feb. 16, provided only a faint glimmer of hope that a crisis could be averted before funding expires at midnight on Friday.

In the Senate, at least about a dozen Democratic votes would be needed to approve the measure, and there was little chance that those would materialize. Democrats are intent on securing concessions that would, among other things, protect from deportation young immigrants brought to the country illegally as children, increase domestic spending, aid Puerto Rico and bolster the government’s response to the opioid crisis.

The Senate held only a procedural vote on the stopgap bill late Thursday night, leaving for Friday a more consequential vote when Democrats are expected to block the measure.

In addition to keeping the government open, the bill would provide funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program for six years, and it would delay or suspend a handful of taxes imposed by the Affordable Care Act… [emphasis added]

Inserted from  <NY Times>

Brian Williams covered the House measure.

Here’s the Republican deceit.  CHIP enjoys strong support on both sides of the aisle, and it would pass without having to count votes at any other time.  The only reason is has not passed already is that Republicans have kept it off the floor to use it as a tool to to blackmail Democrats.  That way, they get what they want, more hits to ObamaCare, in return for something they were going to support anyway!

That is so ludicrous that there is no way Democrats should fall for it.  However, since the courts have ordered the Republican Reich to keep the Dreamers safe, their status does not become a critical issue until March, so allowing a short CR would still leave time to hold the line on DACA.

Because funding the government is an immediate emergency, and DACA is a two month emergency, Republicans can make it look like Democrats are at fault for the shutdown.  To you and I, it’s obvious that isn’t true, because we understand the Republican scam.  However, the US electorate are the least sophisticated and most politically ignorant voters in the world.  My proof is this.  Donald Trump, albeit with Russian help, was able to get enough votes to steal the White House.  Were I not correct, that could not have happened.

Can we afford to leave the judgment of whose fault a shutdown is to the US electorate?  I’m just not sure.

It’s another warm, super-muggy day.  WWWendy sis a stellar job of destinking the TomCat yesterday evening.  Unfortunately, The TomCat is already stinky again, and the next shower is Sunday.  Sad smile TGIF!

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 2:54 (average 4:12).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From YouTube (Late Show Channel): The Fake News Awards Were Worth The Wait

Colbert lied. Trump is bad at being Resident 100% of the time, not 90%.  Kudos to all who won a Fake News Award from the Pumpkin Pervert. RESIST!!

From YouTube (Funny or Die Channel): White Noise Sleep Machine: How Racists Sleep At Night

Republicans can get their own Aryan 2 for only $19.99. RESIST!!

From Washington Post: An appointee of President Trump has resigned from the federal agency that runs AmeriCorps and other service programs after remarks he made disparaging blacks, Muslims, gays, women, veterans with PTSD and undocumented immigrants surfaced in the news media.

Carl Higbie lasted less than six months as the chief of external affairs in the Corporation for National and Community Service.

Higbie’s Thursday afternoon resignation, which was prompted after CNN unearthed the comments he made, comes amid increased scrutiny of the president’s appointees for racist or anti-Muslim statements made in the past.

Sadly, the Republican Party has a deep pool of bigots in which to find a replacement, who also hates blacks, Muslims, gays, women, vets with PTSD and undocumented immigrants. RESIST!!

As we all know, White House physician, Dr. Ronny Jackson, has declared that Trump is allegedly in “excellent health” … all 6’-3” & 239 pounds of him.

But doubts about the accuracy of this assessment have swept through the Twittersphere & Internet.  And thanks to Chris Hayes, we now have the mocking rise of the “Girther Movement”.

Well, you can count me as a card-carrying “Girther”!

And I’m joined by some famous folks …

And speaking of Pres. Obama and health, let’s start the comparisons with this one:

And to set the record straight WRT his “alleged” 6’ 3” height

Of course much more popular ones compare Trump’s height and weight with some well-known sports figures:

And this one has especially gotta sting:

But with Trump’s rampant narcissism, he no doubt sees it this way:

I would never call in to question the physician’s veracity – but others might …

[OK – that one’s Photoshopped … but still funny]

And it’s not like Trump doesn’t have a long history of playing fast and loose with facts and the truth …

But beyond the spurious height and weight is that mental acuity test he “aced” …

And about that Montreal Cognitive Assessment Test?  Well, there was this exchange during the test …

“Technically it’s a rhinoceros, sir.  But ‘pointy-nose horse’ will do just fine, Mr. President.”

And the challenge from James Gunn has been made to Donald …

That’s great, but I fear this is the likely outcome:

It’s that time of week again, so here are three excellent video clips from Sam’s show last night.  Enjoy!!

#MeToo Backlash

For the most part, I agree with Sam, but Babe.net’s handling the Aziz Ansari incident went too far. Accountability is a must, but a witch hunt mind-set is sure to hurt the innocent with the guilty.

Full Frontal Investigates: Is This Racist Racist?

We KNOW the racist is racist like the rest of the racist Republican Reich.

The Actual Forgotten Working Class

"The best representation of us is us." AMEN!! Cool song!

It’s another super muggy day, and I’m very tired, because I slept intermittently last night.  So please pardon my brevity.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 3:09 (average 4:37).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From YouTube (Jimmy Kimmel Channel): The Porn Donald Trump Doesn’t Want You to See

Barf Bag Alert!!

Frankly, I don’t believe it. It overrated his performance. RESIST!!

From Daily Kos: Republican senators Joni Ernst and Chuck Grassley have been back home in Iowa to hold small town halls in rural areas, places they probably thought would be ‘safe spaces’ from angry voters. WRONG. The rural voters who turned out were not happy with Donald Trump and they unloaded on Ernst and Grassley. In one particularly embarrassing moment for Sen. Ernst in Red Oak, Iowa (population 5,476), she drew laughter and scorn.

Pig Nuts Barf Bag Alert!!

Joni Pig Nuts is too stupid to know that both Sweden and Finland are between Norway and Russia. RESIST!!

From NY Times: It was a made-for-TV moment, perfect for a presidential campaign advertisement.

His fists clenched and his voice rising, Senator Cory Booker, Democrat of New Jersey, delivered a 10-minute verbal thrashing to Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen this week, recalling his “tears of rage” when he learned that President Trump had used vulgarities to describe African nations.

Not to be outdone, Senator Kamala Harris, Democrat of California, who was seated next to Mr. Booker, also skewered Ms. Nielsen, suggesting that Americans could draw a “reasonable inference” that she is racist.

The next presidential election is nearly three years away, but in the Capitol the race is already unfolding, with no fewer than six senators — Mr. Booker and Ms. Harris, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Kirsten E. Gillibrand of New York and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota — eyeing the Democratic nomination in 2020, with each angling to get to the left of the others.

Personally I think this is premature. Our eyes need to be focused on 2018, not 2020. RESIST!!
