Paul Ryan, aka Lyin’ Ryan, realized that the Nunes Memo, aka the dud, was an abject failure to all but the Republican base, buried so deep in the Republican bubble machine that they will never be told the truth about it.  But for the vast majority of Americans, it was so bad that Ryan is desperate to change the subject.

RyanLick

One day after reluctantly releasing a ridiculous memo from idiot Congressman Devin Nunes which tried and failed to exonerate Donald Trump in his Russia scandal, the Republican Party seems unsure what to do. Trump is still defending the memo. Nunes says he’ll release more memos. Trey Gowdy has cut bait by endorsing Robert Mueller and retiring from Congress. Paul Ryan tried to get the GOP back on message today, but failed rather spectacularly.

Ryan is still trying to convince the American public that his Republican Party’s historically unpopular tax scam bill for the wealthy is somehow a boon for the working class. He tweeted a link to an article while quoting the part which said that “A secretary at a public high school in Lancaster, PA, said she was pleasantly surprised her pay went up $1.50 a week … she said [that] will more than cover her Costco membership for the year.”

After facing immediate backlash and humiliation for obvious reasons, Ryan quickly deleted the tweet. He had unwittingly highlighted that this tax bill doesn’t do anything for the working class. This bill explodes the deficit by more than a trillion dollars with its massive giveaways to the wealthy, while stiffing the working class with a buck-fifty a week. Worse, the tax scam eliminates several basic deductions for the working class, meaning many of them will be stuck paying more taxes each year. Despite all of the GOP’s lies, this was a middle class tax increase.

Paul Ryan isn’t the most gifted of politicians, but he would normally know better than to post such a stupid and self defeating tweet. This was a rookie mistake by a guy who, despite not really being liked by anyone on either side, has managed to survive in politics and climb the ranks for decades. But he was so desperate to move on from the memo and get his party back on message, and so rattled, he blew it. Maybe that’s because the scandal surrounding the Nunes memo has implicated him in the Trump-Russia coverup…

Inserted from <The Palmer Report>

If I said I wasn’t most amused at his slithering and squirming, I’m be a liar.  Lets deny him the Speakership in 2018.  Since he deleted the tweet, lets delete the twit, by making him file for unemployment.

Every Republican in office

It’s a high holy day in the Church of the Ellipsoid Orb.  The walking rectum likes the Patriots.  Go Eagles!  I’ll be spending the afternoon in meditation.  WWWendy is due in about 45 minutes to destink the TomCat and help with chores, including making a big load of chili.  That way I can cheer the Eagles from one end and Trump’s Patriots from the other.

WWWendy just left and greets you all! The chili will produce a magnificent green cloud!

From Washington Post: Longtime televangelist Pat Robertson is recovering after suffering an embolic stroke, according to the Christian Broadcasting Network [hate channel delinked], a Virginia-based television network Robertson founded.

Robertson, 87, was rushed to the nearest stroke center Friday after a family member recognized “the onset of symptoms,” the CBN report says.

“Within minutes of receiving [clot-busting drugs], Dr. Robertson was awake and responsive and able to move all of his limbs,” CBN states. He is expected to make a full recovery.

As much as I cannot stand this Republican Supply-side pseudo-Christian and purveyor of Republican hatred, I would not wish a stroke upon him. However, if he makes a full recovery, but loses the use of his vocal chords, that would be a blessing for the world. RESIST!!

From NY Times: For Republicans in the states, the political warning signs keep mounting: In Virginia, it was an electoral shellacking that nearly snapped their 20-year grip on the State House. In Wisconsin, it was a midwinter rout in a special election for the State Senate, fought in a conservative district.

And in Pennsylvania, it has been an exodus of state legislators from the Philadelphia area, where more than half a dozen Republicans have opted for retirement over a strenuous campaign in 2018.

“It looks like it’s going to be a war zone,” said State Representative Gene DiGirolamo, a moderate Republican, of his native Bucks County, a spacious suburb on the New Jersey border.

As national Republicans dig in to defend their majorities in Congress in the midterm elections, party leaders across the country have grown anxious about losses on a different front: state legislatures. Over the last decade, Republicans have dominated most state capitals, enacting deep tax cuts, imposing new regulations on labor unions and abortion providers, and drawing favorable congressional maps to reinforce their power in Washington.

November can’t come soon enough! RESIST!!

The Dud

The Republican Party are desperate to cover up the treason committed by Donald Trump.  For the last week they have been crowing about how the memo they were about to release would clear Trump and demonstrate how the investigation into criminal Republican cooperation with the Russian government is a scam.  I was actually concerned, not that it might be true, but that the lies might be problematic. I forgot to take GOP incompetence into account.  I now call that memo, the dud.

0203good_boy_devin

The release on Friday of a highly controversial memo that claims surveillance abuse on the part of the FBI and the Department of Justice has Republicans and Democrats at each other’s throats.

While Republicans say the document, which was compiled by embattled House Intelligence Committee chairman Devin Nunes, is clear evidence of partisan bias at the DOJ and the FBI, Democrats say it contains significant omissions and inaccuracies that mischaracterize the intelligence community’s work.

Addressing the memo’s release on Friday, President Donald Trump said, "I think it’s a disgrace what’s happening in our country."

But as far as its material claims go, the memo was underwhelming to legal experts and former intelligence officials… [emphasis added]

Don’t take my word for it.  Decide for yourselves.  Here is the dud in its entirety.

January 18, 2018

To: HPSCI Majority Members

From: HPSCI Majority Staff

Subject: Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act Abuses at the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation

Purpose

This memorandum provides Members an update on significant facts relating to the Committee’s ongoing investigation into the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and their use of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) during the 2016 presidential election cycle. Our findings, which are detailed below, 1) raise concerns with the legitimacy and legality of certain DOJ and FBI interactions with the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC), and 2) represent a troubling breakdown of legal processes established to protect the American people from abuses related to the FISA process.

Investigation Update

GOP-ShitOn October 21, 2016, DOJ and FBI sought and received a FISA probable cause order (not under Title VII) authorizing electronic surveillance on Carter Page from the FISC. Page is a U.S. citizen who served as a volunteer advisor to the Trump presidential campaign. Consistent with requirements under FISA, the application had to be first certified by the Director or Deputy Director of the FBI. It then required the approval of the Attorney General, Deputy Attorney General (DAG), or the Senate-confirmed Assistant Attorney General for the National Security Division.

The FBI and DOJ obtained one initial FISA warrant targeting Carter Page and three FISA renewals from the FISC. As required by statute (50 U.S.C. §,1805(d)(l)), a FISA order on an American citizen must be renewed by the FISC every 90 days and each renewal requires a separate finding of probable cause. Then-Director James Comey signed three FISA applications in question on behalf of the FBI, and Deputy Director Andrew McCabe signed one. Then-DAG Sally Yates, then-Acting DAG Dana Boente, and DAG Rod Rosenstein each signed one or more FISA applications on behalf of DOJ.

Due to the sensitive nature of foreign intelligence activity, FISA submissions (including renewals) before the FISC are classified. As such, the public’s confidence in the integrity of the FISA process depends on the court’s ability to hold the government to the highest standard—particularly as it relates to surveillance of American citizens. However, the FISC’s rigor in protecting the rights of Americans, which is reinforced by 90-day renewals of surveillance orders, is necessarily dependent on the government’s production to the court of all material and relevant facts. This should include information potentially favorable to the target of the FISA application that is known by the government. In the case of Carter Page, the government had at least four independent opportunities before the FISC to accurately provide an accounting of the relevant facts. However, our findings indicate that, as described below, material and relevant information was omitted.

1) The “dossier” compiled by Christopher Steele (Steele dossier) on behalf of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and the Hillary Clinton campaign formed an essential part of the Carter Page FISA application. Steele was a longtime FBI source who was paid over $160,000 by the DNC and Clinton campaign, via the law firm Perkins Coie and research firm Fusion GPS, to obtain derogatory information on Donald Trump’s ties to Russia.

a) Neither the initial application in October 2016, nor any of the renewals, disclose or reference the role of the DNC, Clinton campaign, or any party/campaign in funding Steele’s efforts, even though the political origins of the Steele dossier were then known to senior DOJ and FBI officials.

b) The initial FISA application notes Steele was working for a named U.S. person, but does not name Fusion GPS and principal Glenn Simpson, who was paid by a U.S. law firm (Perkins Coie) representing the DNC (even though it was known by DOJ at the time that political actors were involved with the Steele dossier). The application does not mention Steele was ultimately working on behalf of—and paid by—the DNC and Clinton campaign, or that the FBI had separately authorized payment to Steele for the same information.

2) The Carter Page FISA application also cited extensively a September 23, 2016, Yahoo News article by Michael Isikoff, which focuses on Page’s July 2016 trip to Moscow. This article does not corroborate the Steele dossier because it is derived from information leaked by Steele himself to Yahoo News. The Page FISA application incorrectly assesses that Steele did not directly provide information to Yahoo News. Steele has admitted in British court filings that he met with Yahoo News—and several other outlets—in September 2016 at the direction of Fusion GPS. Perkins Coie was aware of Steele’s initial media contacts because they hosted at least one meeting in Washington D.C. in 2016 with Steele and Fusion GPS where this matter was discussed.

a) Steele was suspended and then terminated as an FBI source for what the FBI defines as the most serious of violations—an unauthorized disclosure to the media of his relationship with the FBI in an October 30, 2016, Mother Jones article by David Corn. Steele should have been terminated for his previous undisclosed contacts with Yahoo and other outlets in September—before the Page application was submitted to the FISC in October—but Steele improperly concealed from and lied to the FBI about those contacts.

b) Steele’s numerous encounters with the media violated the cardinal rule of source handling—maintaining confidentiality—and demonstrated that Steele had become a less than reliable source for the FBI.

3) Before and after Steele was terminated as a source, he maintained contact with DOJ via then-Associate Deputy Attorney General Bruce Ohr, a senior DOJ official who worked closely with Deputy Attorneys General Yates and later Rosenstein. Shortly after the election, the FBI began interviewing Ohr, documenting his communications with Steele. For example, in September 2016, Steele admitted to Ohr his feelings against then-candidate Trump when Steele said he “was desperate that Donald Trump not get elected and was passionate about him not being president.” This clear evidence of Steele’s bias was recorded by Ohr at the time and subsequently in official FBI files—but not reflected in any of the Page FISA applications.

a) During this same time period, Ohr’s wife was employed by Fusion GPS to assist in the cultivation of opposition research on Trump. Ohr later provided the FBI with all of his wife’s opposition research, paid for by the DNC and Clinton campaign via Fusion GPS. The Ohrs’ relationship with Steele and Fusion GPS was inexplicably concealed from the FISC.

4) According to the head of the FBI’s counterintelligence division, Assistant Director Bill Priestap, corroboration of the Steele dossier was in its “infancy” at the time of the initial Page FISA application. After Steele was terminated, a source validation report conducted by an independent unit within FBI assessed Steele’s reporting as only minimally corroborated. Yet, in early January 2017, Director Comey briefed President-elect Trump on a summary of the Steele dossier, even though it was—according to his June 2017 testimony—“salacious and unverified.” While the FISA application relied on Steele’s past record of credible reporting on other unrelated matters, it ignored or concealed his anti-Trump financial and ideological motivations. Furthermore, Deputy Director McCabe testified before the Committee in December 2017 that no surveillance warrant would have been sought from the FISC without the Steele dossier information.

5) The Page FISA application also mentions information regarding fellow Trump campaign advisor George Papadopoulos, but there is no evidence of any cooperation or conspiracy between Page and Papadopoulos. The Papadopoulos information triggered the opening of an FBI counterintelligence investigation in late July 2016 by FBI agent Pete Strzok. Strzok was reassigned by the Special Counsel’s Office to FBI Human Resources for improper text messages with his mistress, FBI Attorney Lisa Page (no known relation to Carter Page), where they both demonstrated a clear bias against Trump and in favor of Clinton, whom Strzok had also investigated. The Strzok/Lisa Page texts also reflect extensive discussions about the investigation, orchestrating leaks to the media, and include a meeting with Deputy Director McCabe to discuss an “insurance” policy against President Trump’s election.

Rachel Maddow demonstrates that the dud actually undermines its stated purpose.

It says that investigation into Papadopoulos, not page set off the FBI Russia investigation.

Furthermore the FBI has been investigating Page as a Russian agent since 2013, long before the Steele Dossier.

Needless to say, Republican pundits are shouting from the rooftops that the dud isn’t a dud.  Get the truth out.

From The New Yorker: Former hippies across the United States have been put in the unbearable position of rooting for the F.B.I., hippies have confirmed.

From Vermont to California, erstwhile hippies bemoaned a nightmare scenario that has forced them to side with a law-enforcement agency they have despised since the Summer of Love.

“I always dreamed I’d spend my retirement surrounded by my grandchildren, telling them that the F.B.I. were fascist pigs,” Carol Foyler, a former hippie who lives in Santa Cruz, said. “That dream has been shot to hell.”

Her husband, Mick, nodded his head in sad agreement. “We were so happy when pot was legalized in California,” he said. “But the fact that we’re now on the same side as the F.B.I. has ruined even that.”

Dang Andy! As a former hippie, I have to agree! RESIST!!

From Raw Story: [T]he U.S. flu outbreak worsened over the past week as more people headed to doctors’ offices and emergency rooms, with hospitalizations at the highest in nearly 10 years, U.S. health officials said on Friday.

Sixteen children died of the flu in the week ended Jan. 27, bringing total pediatric deaths to 53 for the season, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s weekly report.

Out of every 100,000 people in the general population, an estimated 51.4 have been hospitalized for the flu, surpassing the rate in the last severe season of 2014-2015, when 710,000 were hospitalized and 148 children died. Adults aged 65 or older had the most hospitalizations, followed by those aged 50 to 64 and children below 5.

“So far this year the cumulative rate of hospitalization is the highest since we began tracking in this way,” Dr. Anne Schuchat, acting director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told reporters on a conference call.

I never liked Paul Ryan.  I don’t trust him.  This Ayn Randian sycophant is, in my opinion, treading very close to a precipice, or perhaps more accurately, has jumped from the frying pan to the fire.  As John Nichols, author of this piece writes, “Ryan abandoned the solemn oath he swore “to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic…” “, and that includes Trump!

From The Nation — Asked at the close of the Constitutional Convention of 1787 if the delegates had created a republic or a monarchy, Benjamin Franklin is reported to have replied, “A republic, if you can keep it.” [emphasis mine]

Paul Ryan has abandoned the effort to keep it. [emphasis mine]

At the heart of the US Constitution is a system of checks and balances that was established primarily to guard against the concentration of power in an executive branch that might tend toward royalism. The founders of the American experiment wanted to prevent a repeat of the monarchical abuses of King George III, against which their constituents had risen in revolution.

“The accumulation of all powers, legislative, executive, and judiciary, in the same hands, whether of one, a few, or many, and whether hereditary, selfappointed, or elective, may justly be pronounced the very definition of tyranny,” warned James Madison, the essential author of the Constitution, who explained, “The great security against a gradual concentration of the several powers in the same department, consists in giving to those who administer each department the necessary constitutional means and personal motives to resist encroachments of the others.”

What Madison asserted in the late 1780s remains true to this day: For the system of checks and balances to function, the leaders charged with responsibility for the various branches of government must zealously defend the authority of the branches they lead. They cannot allow one branch to become the extension of another.

I hope you will continue reading this excellent article which sheds some historical light on the Republican shenanigans orchestrated by Ryan and Nunes.  I use the word ‘shenanigans’ which has a less serious sound.  In truth, Ryan’s actions, or the lack of appropriate actions, is cause for great concern.  They set Trump up as the new king.  King George III would be so proud to know that the US was becoming a monarchy.

When I set out to research the German words that capture what it feels like to be an American living during the era of the Trump administration, I didn’t expect there to be so damn many.

Like many of my fellow citizens who have flocked to therapists’ offices over the past year, eager to sort through their trauma at being governed by a narcissistic megalomaniac, I was already aware that the current political era was doing something strange to my psyche. But it can be hard to pin down exactly what these emotions are, if words for them even exist.

It was one particular moment of schadenfreude (as I laughed at Steve Mnuchin’s wife revealing her true self on social media) that got me wondering: what other gems of the beautiful German language could help me diagnose the rollercoaster of emotions one feels during a typical day in Trump’s America? There’s so much relief in having a name for these feelings of fear, paranoia and anger, after all. Here are a few, for starters.

1. Fernweh

Fernweh, or “distance pain,” is like the opposite of homesickness. It’s the feeling of wanting to be elsewhere, anywhere but where you are at this moment. The Fernweh many Americans feel today is a bit like wanderlust, minus the glamour and with the added fear that you may be harshly judged as an American traveling abroad in the time of Trump.

2. Weltschmerz

Weltschmerz translates literally to “world pain,” and boy oh boy, does that say it all. It’s the state of weariness one feels at the state of the world. Some of us may have felt a constant state of Weltschmerz since Nov. 9, 2016.

3. Kummerspeck

If your state of Weltschmerz has been really getting to you, it’s possible you’ve put on a few extra pounds of Kummerspeck, or literally, “grief bacon.” Know that you’re at least in good company: last year, Barbra Streisand, Judd Apatow and others complained they’d gained a “Trump 10” in the months following the election. Eat your feelings, indeed.

4. Kuddelmuddel

This wonderful heap of syllables evokes chaos or a hopelessly messy, unstructured state. Sounds like the White House as told by Michael Flynn.

5. Fuchsteufelswild

This is a state of unfiltered, primal rage. You may have felt it over the past year while listening to any White House press conference, hearing Trump describe Haiti, El Salvador and many African nations as “shithole countries,” seeing the president troll Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand on social media…or really, any time at all.

6. Fremdschaemen

Ever felt ashamed on behalf of a member of the Trump White House? Like the time Kellyanne Conway told Fox viewers to “go buy Ivanka’s stuff”? Or when Trump claimed his inauguration speech literally made the clouds part and the sun come out? That’s Fremdschaemen.

7. Backpfeifengesicht

In German, this means “a face that deserves to be punched.” Insert your own joke here.

There seems to be something about this – Resident – that makes people feel that their own language is just not big enough to describe his awfulness.  While Liz is turning to German to expand her vocabulary, Germany seems to be turning to American English to do the same.  A couple of examples:

So I invite everyone, especially Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone, to have some fun expanding out vocabularies this week.  Sometime one simply needs to have a little fun.  (But, Furies, if you get bored, you can always go check out those fitness trackers.)

I’ll preface this post with a request for your indulgence, as well as your thoughts, prayers or whatever your means of spiritual support may be.

I think I mentioned that on January 10th my Mom entered into a Hospice program.  This was during her second hospitalization in less than a month for heart failure.

While most certainly this was not an easy decision, I have no qualms that it was the right decision.

She had actually asked that we talk with her internist PCP concerning Hospice ~ 18 months ago – so she realized even back then that her time on this earth was coming to a close.

Her PCP wisely told her back then that he could not sign the Certificate because she did not meet the necessary criteria to be admitted to a Hospice program.  Of course, I was much relived.  She took it with her usual equanimity.  (She’s always been solid as a rock – me … not so much.)

I’m blessed that SHE has been the one who has said “It’s time for me to move to Assisted Living” – “It’s time that I start using the wheelchair for long the long distance to the dining room rather than my walker” – “It’s time to revisit that talk with my PCP again about Hospice Care”

When someone who is first diagnosed with congestive heart failure at 101 y/o, the writing on the wall is pretty clear.

So with her second admission in less than a month in January, we again re-visited the subject with both her cardiologist and internist.  This time there was no hesitation that this was the right (and inevitable) decision.

But, sadly, it doesn’t make it any easier.

I fully admit that I’m the one having a much more difficult time with her “Final Journey” than she is.  (And  I am grateful she’s doing much better!).  Maybe most people will be fortunate enough to recognize that their time here is coming to an end.  I certainly hope I do.

The real difficulty for me is the fact that she lives 400 miles away … AND my cat.

I know I have shared with you that my shelter cat is NOT a friendly critter.  And because of that, the staff at Mom’s Assisted Living is not fond of him … AT ALL!

(I will note that while Nike and I have been up visiting, there have been at least three different Hospice nurses, the Hospice Chaplain, the Hospice Social Worker and Mom’s Pastor who’ve come to visit.  Each one has spent over 30 minutes with Mom, me and the cat – and not one of them has ever had a problem with Nike.)

But as I’ve tried to explain to them (especially as a Pediatrician), it’s like having a child with disabilities or other medical issues – you don’t just get rid of them & ask for exchange.  You play the cards you’re dealt.

But Mom likes the cat and asks that I bring him along.  That’s a request I simply cannot refuse.

But it’s made trips up to Mom’s very stressful in and of itself.  That’s now compounded by Mom being in Hospice.  Hopefully the facility and I have worked out a program that will prevent any further problems involving the cat – both on Nike’s part AND on the staff’s part.  (Won’t go into the details, but some on the staff have treated the cat less than kindly.)

At any rate, I’ll try, as best I can, to continue with the “Friday Fun”.  But hope you will understand if I miss a few entries when I’m just not feeling up to it – like today.

As most of you probably know from your own personal experiences, this is just not an easy time for me.
