As the Manafort trial appears to be winding down I thought it would be fun to focus on some “Legal Odds & Ends”.

You’re probably aware of the fact that Cranky Judge Ellis (who appears to be putting his thumb on the scales of “justice” in favor of Paul Manafort) would not allow the prosecutor to show the jury his wildly extravagant $15,000 ostrich-leather jacket or his even more extravagant $18,500 python-leather jacket:

Having been so chastised, the prosecutors realized they had no chance of introducing Manafort’s “Jacket for Every Treason” of live Puffins:

And although Judge Ellis has also forbidden prosecutors to even say the word “oligarch” in relation to the “financing” Manafort received from Russian billionaire oligarchs like Oleg Deripaska, it doesn’t look like Manafort’s defense has an Oleg to stand on.

In fact the only option that was left to Manafort’s legal beagles was to try and impeach Rick Gates’ credibility on the grounds that no jury could possibly trust anyone who was willing to work for a proven tax-cheating, lying crook like Manafort.

Not to be left out of the Legal Odds & Ends, Rudy Giuliani is trying to dictate the terms that Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller must follow in even questioning Twitler.

Rudy is proposing absolutely ridiculous terms like “No discussion dealing with collusion” and “No discussion dealing with obstruction of justice.”

For those of us old enough to remember Jeffrey Dahmer (he was convicted of multiple rapes ad murders of his young male victims, and freezing them for cannibalism later on) that would be like Dahmer’s lawyers telling the prosecutor: “We won’t allow any questions about the body parts in our client’s freezer.”

(Turns out Dahmer did have Ben & Jerry in his freezer.  The problem was, it wasn’t ice cream.)

HOLY COW!  Have you herd where even some Bovine Deputies wanted to wrangle their way into Legal Odds & Ends by corralling a suspected car thief?  You might think it’s a bunch of bull – but it’s true!  Have I ever steered you wrong?

I found the story udderly amoosing.  It looks like there was a real beef between them and the suspect.  They quickly took stock of the situation, and even though the steaks were high, they got the job done.   Seems pretty clear they wanted to tan her hide!

(Have I milked this one for all it’s worth?  I hope you don’t think I butchered too many of the puns.  And if it’s late when you read this and it’s pasture bedtime – I wish you pleasant dreams.)

It’s that time of week again, so here are three excellent video clips from Sam’s show last night.  Enjoy!

Bad Boy Roundup: Manafort & Don Jr.

Sam sure knows her stuff on the Republican Reich! Can the US trade with Canada for her. They can have Cruz back.

Pregnancy Discrimination

In a Republican Reich an unborn child has right, not the thing carrying it. The rights of the unborn child are terminated immediately after birth.

Crashing Sean Spicer’s Book Tour

Shitty Spice’s book should be purchased only for use as toilet paper, and then, disinfect afterwards.

The Reich on the left, Robert Reich, is right. The Reich on the right, the Republican Reich, is trying to create a right for rich employers to make workers bend over and grab their ankles. Support labor! RESIST!! VOTE BLUE!!

From The New Yorker: With Tuesday’s special election in Ohio still too close to call, Republican officials in the state acknowledged that they outspent Democrats to the tune of a hundred million rubles.

Harland Dorrinson, a spokesman for the Ohio Republican Party, told reporters on Wednesday that if the G.O.P. ekes out a win, it will have been worth all of the Russian currency the Party threw at the race.

“You can talk ground game all you want, but, at the end of the day, you can’t buy TV and radio ads without rubles,” he said.

Dorrinson credited the Republican congressional-campaign committee for what he called a “highly successful ruble-raising effort.”

Andy, that’s great investigative journalism! RESIST!! VOTE BLUE!!

There are over 3,000 absentee ballots and 5,000 provisional ballots still to be counted, but the analysts I’ve read agree that Danny will fall short by less than 0.5%.  If it turns out that Danny loses the election because 1,127 people based their votes on emotion and hubris, instead of voting strategically with their brains, I will feel very angry.  Over most of the world, the Green Party is a wonderful and valuable organization, but here in the US Jill Stein made it a Russian tool.  See yesterday’s article in Think Progress.  Danny gets another shot in November.

From Politico: The American Civil Liberties Union on Tuesday filed a federal lawsuit against the Trump administration over its decision to remove asylum protections for victims of domestic and gang violence.

The ACLU is arguing against “expedited removal” policies, put forth by Attorney General Jeff Sessions, that it says “generally” deny claims of violence of that nature.

“This is a naked attempt by the Trump administration to eviscerate our country’s asylum protections,” Jennifer Chang Newell, managing attorney with the ACLU’s Immigrants’ Rights Project, said in a statement. “It’s clear the administration’s goal is to deny and deport as many people as possible, as quickly as possible.”

The lawsuit, Grace v. Sessions, was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia in conjunction with the Center for Gender & Refugee Studies at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.

In June, the attorney general overturned asylum protections for certain victims of violence, effectively reversing a push by the Obama administration to provide refuge to women with credible claims of domestic violence.

Kudos to the ACLU. Beauregard’s only quality is his recusal. RESIST!! VOTE BLUE!!

From The New Yorker: Californians were baffled on Monday by a series of tweets by Donald J. Trump in which he utterly failed to blame the state’s current wildfires on Hillary Clinton.

In interviews with residents up and down the Golden State, Californians agreed with the assessment of Harland Dorrinson, a Modesto native, that Trump’s failure to pin the fires on Clinton was “nothing short of bizarre.”

“When he said that there wasn’t enough water to put out the fires, I naturally assumed he was going to accuse Hillary Clinton of sneaking into California and somehow stealing all of our water,” Dorrinson said. “It was so confusing when he didn’t.”

“I thought that the wildfires would be a perfect opportunity for Trump to accuse Hillary of being anti-water and pro-fire, but he didn’t even mention her,” Tracy Klugian, who lives in San Jose, said. “Maybe he’s really distracted by all this Russia stuff and he’s off his game.”

Dang Andy! I hope he’s too busy pacing in his cell to be distracted soon. RESIST!! VOTE BLUE!!

RepublicansOnParade6

Here is the one hundred twenty-eighth article in our Republicans on Parade series, featuring individuals who personify what the Republican Party has become. Today’s honoree is Republican congressional candidate in Ohio 12th, Troy Balderson.   He is so honored for the normal Republican courage he showed over supporting a Republican pervert  enabler to be Speaker of the House.

0807CowardThe special election for Ohio’s 12th Congressional District takes place Tuesday. And Republicans are increasingly terrified about the prospect of losing yet another reliably conservative seat in a race that is now a tossup.

GOP candidate Troy Balderson, however, also appears to be terrified of tipping his hand about what he would actually do in Congress — starting with whether or not he would back a man mired in a sex abuse scandal for speaker of the House.

In a new video posted by American Bridge, when confronted about Jim Jordan’s run for the speakership, Balderson simply ran away…

Inserted from <Alternet>

When Jordan was Assistant Wrestling Coach at Ohio State University, he enabled the team doctor to abuse wrestlers by covering-up for him.  Now, instead of resigning from Congress, as decency demands, Jordan is running for Speaker of the House. Here’s video of Balderson slinking away, when asked to confirm whether Jordan is his choice for Speaker.

If elected I have no doubt that, if he wins, Balderson will also support the cover-up for another GOP pervert, whose name and tiny hands. etc. shall go unmentioned.

Tomorrow, I hope to report that Danny O’Connor has won the seat and flipped another bright red district.

Portland is under another excessive heat warning.  I expect highs of or near 100° for the next three days with high humidity too.  I overslept this morning because I had trouble sleeping last night.  I had to don George, because another resident hogged the only handicapped restroom I can use without wearing George for over an hour.  It was almost puddle and mop time.  I’ve burned most of my morning rest time, so I’ll just work through.

From Washington Post: Since the 2016 presidential election, Donald Trump’s Hollywood Walk of Fame star has seen just about everything. It was smashed into pieces — twice. It was vandalized with a swastika, enclosed with a miniature border wall, defaced with profanity and graced with the presence of a gold-painted toilet telling passersby to “TAKE A  TRUMP.”

Trump supporters have fought back, defending the star. Late last month, hours after a man destroyed the star with a pickax, a fierce brawl ensued, leaving one person kicked in the head and another bleeding from the face.

The site has become a symbol not only of the nation’s celebrity president but of the polarization surrounding him. And a nearby city council has had enough of it.

On Monday night, the West Hollywood City Council voted unanimously in favor of a resolution to ask for the removal of Trump’s star because of the president’s “disturbing treatment of women and other actions that do not meet the shared values of the City of West Hollywood, the region, state, and country.” It cited Trump’s lewd comments on the “Access Hollywood” tape, his policy of separating families at the border and his denial of Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Kudos to West Hollywood!! Take a TRUMP?!!? ROTF!! RESIST!! VOTE BLUE!!

In British Columbia, today is a statutory holiday called BC Day, previously known as a civic holiday.  Up until now, it did not have any particular importance to me other than to celebrate British Columbia, the province where I now live.  But that changed for me a few days ago when I read the following article.

From Maclean’s — There was an American invasion, a war that claimed perhaps hundreds of lives, and a shaky truce that eventually invited the breadth of Canada to extend from Atlantic to Pacific. That should count for some special place in Canada’s collective memory, you might think.  …

The first Monday in August is British Columbia Day, a holiday that recalls the Westminster Parliament’s proclamation of the Crown Colony of British Columbia on August 2, 1858. The proclamation itself was a direct response to the uproar set off by the discovery of immense gold deposits in the Fraser Canyon, a frenzy that led to that summer’s invasion by at least 30,000 American miners who immediately organized themselves into several heavily-armed militias to make war on the Fraser Canyon’s Indigenous people.

Another difficulty is that the Fraser Canyon War doesn’t align with the conventional telling of Canadian history as an east-to-west epic. British Columbia’s story runs on a north-south axis, with a forward view out on the Pacific rather than a backward view across the Atlantic. On the Pacific coast, the Hudson’s Bay Company’s trade in tierces and hogsheads of salmon had always been far and away more voluminous and profitable than trade in furs. A third of the HBC’s workers on the Pacific side of the Rockies were Hawaiians. The handful of treaties concluded on Vancouver Island in the early 1850s took no Canadian treaty as a model, but instead replicated the Treaty of Waitangi between the British Crown and New Zealand’s Maoris.

The first significant wave of settlers to arrive on the Pacific coast north of the 49th parallel did not come from the East. They were the vanguard of a northward-bound exodus of “King George men” from the HBC settlements on the Columbia River, in what is now the state of Oregon. Dispossessed by American interests under the terms of the Anglo-American Oregon Treaty of 1846, and led by the HBC veteran James Douglas, they were mainly Indigenous people, Orkney Islanders, Hawaiians, Metis and Scots. They were welcomed on Vancouver Island by the Saanich and Songhees tribes among whom they first settled. In London, Douglas was appointed Vancouver Island’s colonial governor.

Meanwhile, backed by the U.S. Army, American miners poured into the old Oregon territory that Douglas and his people had been forced to vacate, and the result was carnage. There was the Cayuse War, the Nisqually War, the Yakima War and the Klamath and Salmon River War. By the early months of 1858, word had spread from California to New York that the Fraser and Thompson canyons were glistening with gold, and the miners began pouring north into what was then the HBC district of New Caledonia, the unceded territories of several confident, populous indigenous tribes.

The fighting in the Fraser Canyon was merciless. The miners burned villages and shot women and children. The Nlaka’pamux fought back, sending headless corpses down the river. As the HBC’s senior officer on the Pacific, and Vancouver Island’s colonial governor, Douglas was the British Crown’s senior figure in the conflict, and he refused American entreaties to take their side against the tribes. Instead, he assured the Indigenous leadership that the Crown would take pains to defend their rights as British subjects.

I hope you will continue reading about this interesting piece of history.

When I read this article, my first thought was of Trump getting his history wrong about the burning of the White House.  He blamed it on Canada in 1812.  First of all, it was Britain that did the burning as Canada was not yet established.  Second, it was in 1814 during the War of 1812, not 1812.  Third, although he did not mention this (why tell the truth?), the burning was in retaliation for the American sacking of York (modern Toronto).  I suppose Ottawa can thank the US for its position as the capital of Canada.  Then known as Bytown, the Fathers of Confederation felt the capital should be away from the threat of American incursions across the border so they moved it from Kingston, Ontario on the St Lawrence River to Bytown.  But didn’t Trump get his knickers in a twist!  So, Trump’s business dealings and little tantrums with PM Justin Trudeau, nor indeed the American sacking of York in 1812, are not the first American invasions of what we now know as Canada.

Another, I think interesting point about the west coast of Canada and the US, is that there has been talk in the past about BC, Washington, Oregon and California becoming one nation separate from the US and Canada ostensibly to be called Cascadia.  Although the article does not mention this, it does talk about the migration of people’s from California and Oregon because of the racist laws that were prevailing in the 1800’s.  I say migration, but there was a clear invitation from Douglas to come to what is now BC.

I am quite proud of this part of our history now I know about it.  For me, my values reflect Douglas’ values, as do Canada’s.  What I do not like is that Douglas’ vision faded and BC has had since Douglas and continues to have racially charged problems.  I hope that BC and Canada can be the nation Douglas envisioned, a land where all are equal.  My community is racially diverse with Caucasians, Persians, East Asians, Blacks (not African Americans because they are not American in any way), Arabs, Chinese and Koreans — and those are just the people in my church community.  The wider community is even more diverse and includes Indigenous peoples among others.
