Yesterday, there were primaries, ballot measures, and a special election in several locations.  Here are the results in some of the races I have been following.

Inserted from <NY Times>

While they have not formally called the race, It looks like Sharice did it.  Click through for other results from KS.

Click here for results from Washington’s guerilla primary.

Click here for results from the Michigan primary.

And now for the bad news.

Ohio
18th District
Special Election

CANDIDATE

PARTY

VOTES

PCT.

Troy Balderson

Republican

101,574

50.2%

Danny O’Connor

Democrat

99,820

49.3

Joe Manchik

Green

1,127

0.6

202,521 votes, 100% reporting (591 of 591 precincts)

Inserted from <NY Times>

There are over 3,000 absentee ballots and 5,000 provisional ballots still to be counted, but the analysts I’ve read agree that Danny will fall short by less than 0.5%.  If it turns out that Danny loses the election because 1,127 people based their votes on emotion and hubris, instead of voting strategically with their brains, I will feel very angry.  Over most of the world, the Green Party is a wonderful and valuable organization, but here in the US Jill Stein made it a Russian tool.  See yesterday’s article in Think Progress.  Danny gets another shot in November.

Finally, for everything you need to know about what Republicans did yesterday, please refer to the graphic at the top. Winking smile

  1. Excellent graphs, and your graphic speaks volumes!

Thanks, Tom for your labor on this also.

  2. I see that in Ferguson County, MO a black city councilman has defeated the 7-time prosecutor (notorious for sparing Darren Wood) in the Democratic primary, and no Republicans are running (apparently they don’t think they need to run Republicans if there are Dems like that one).

I’m very sorry it wasn’t a runaway for Danny. But even the most pessimistic prognosticators are saying these results are very good new for Democrats, and terrifying for Republicans. May it be so!

  3. I’m holding onto the champagne till November. At least you can count on me to vote – and furthermore, to Vote Blue.

  4. Encouraging all around!!!!!!

  5. Thanx TC ?

  6. You answered the question I had but did not ask — Balderson only has the seat until the midterms and then Danny O’Connor has a shot of taking it again.  As I noted in my comment to yesterday’s lead article, from the CBC:

“But what’s telling is how close the race was, given that the state’s Republican governor John Kasich last weekend told ABC News it shouldn’t have even been a tossup. Pundits had said anything less than a seven-point win for Balderson would be an embarrassment.””

I guess it was an embarrassment!  This also might mean trouble for Republicans come November.  I can only hope for big, BIG problems for Republicans in November.

While things are looking encouraging for Democrats in November, I have two things to say:

    1 — Don’t get cocky Democrats! and

2 — Get out the vote and vote BLUE!!!

  7. Good results for Democrats; thanks for posting, TomCat.

But as Lynn’s already said: don’t get cocky, Democrats, but instead try to convince all to keep on voting strategically even when they start thinking Democrats will win easily in November. And above all, try to convince those voting for a Green or Independent candidate who is never going to win a seat in the best of circumstances, to think about what is at stake and vote Republicans out of office by switching allegiance just this once. Their lives will depend upon it too!

  8. Thanks and heated Amen to all! 35
