Now We Know Why!

Some thought that Trump picked Kavanaugh because he always rules for the rich.  Some thought it was because of his prejudice against people of color. Some thought it was because of his homophobic hatred of LGBT folk.  Some thought it was because he will either overturn or eviscerate Roe v. Wade.  But at last, now we know why.  Both are pussy grabbers!

The senior Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee referred information involving Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh, President Trump’s nominee to the Supreme Court, to federal investigators on Thursday, but the senator declined to make public what the matter involved.

Two officials familiar with the matter say the incident involved possible sexual misconduct between Judge Kavanaugh and a woman when they were both in high school. They spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to discuss the matter.

The statement by Senator Dianne Feinstein of California came a week before the Judiciary Committee is to vote on his nomination. “I have received information from an individual concerning the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court,” Ms. Feinstein said in a statement. “That individual strongly requested confidentiality, declined to come forward or press the matter further, and I have honored that decision. I have, however, referred the matter to federal investigative authorities.”

The information came in July in a letter, which was first sent to the office of Representative Anna Eshoo, Democrat of California, and accuses the judge of sexual misconduct toward the letter’s author, a person familiar with the letter confirmed… [emphasis added]

Lawrence O’Donnell covered this story in two segments.  Here’s the first:

And the second:

Late this morning we learned more about the contents of the letter.  Kavanaugh committed attempted rape.  He held the girl down, covered her mouth with his hand to muffle her screams, and tried to force himself on her.  She fought him off.

Senate Republicans are trying to cram the nomination through, before the story becomes widespread enough to trigger #metoo responses, in case Kava-Nazi has other victims.

I trust Clarence Thomas is polishing the furniture at SCROTUS (Republican Unconstitutional VD) in gleeful anticipation, and Trump is preparing to nominate Judge Roy Moore to the next open seat.

That outraged some of his fans, who lashed out against the 85-year-old Nelson on social media.

From NY Times: Since his appointment 16 months ago as special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III has granted no interviews and held no news conferences. The spokesman for his office is known around Washington as “Mr. No-Comment.” Even public sightings are rare: A photograph of Mr. Mueller at an airport gate, with Donald Trump Jr. in the background, went viral.

Silence as a public relations strategy is risky, especially for someone who is impugned almost daily by Fox News pundits, Trump allies like Rudolph W. Giuliani and tweets from the president himself. Supporters fear that the fusillade is eroding public confidence in the special counsel’s investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election before Mr. Mueller has a chance to present his findings.

“The risk you always assume is, if your critics and your opponents are the only ones doing the talking, then they get to write the headlines,” said Kevin Madden, a communications strategist who served as a spokesman for the Justice Department under President George W. Bush.

Yet veterans of similar investigations say that keeping quiet may be Mr. Mueller’s only viable option, given the limited set of strategies available for federal prosecutors to communicate with the public. By law, special counsels must follow Justice Department guidelines that restrict them from sharing details about pending investigations, making leaks a potential criminal matter.

I agree that it’s his best bet, but from my perspective as a commentator/satirist that gets very frustrating! RESIST!! VOTE BLUE!!

WHAT’S ALL THE FUSS WITH NATIONAL ANTHEMS ABOUT?

We all are familiar on Politics Plus with the controversial kneeling protests of NFL players during the national anthem in the US, initiated by quarterback Colin Kaepernick in 2016. Kaepernick and his fellow players kneeled while the American anthem played as a silent protest against police brutality and racism.

Now new headlines are made by someone who refuses to stand when an anthem is played, but this time it’s a nine-year-old girl in Australia who protests against the content of the anthem itself. The schoolgirl was given detention last week for “blatant disrespect” over her failure to participate with classmates during assembly when the song was rendered at Kenmore South State School in Brisbane.

Harper Nielsen has stirred controversy after refusing to stand for Australia’s national anthem in protest to “institutional racism”; she claimed the song “Advance Australia Fair” ignored the nation’s indigenous people, taking issue with the opening lyrics to the anthem, which read: “Australians all let us rejoice, for we are young and free. “When it says ‘we are young’ it completely disregards the Indigenous Australians who were here before us for over 50,000 years,” she said. “When it was originally written, Advance Australia Fair meant advance the white people of Australia,” she added.

Harper’s parents, father Mark Nielsen, Associate Professor at the School of Psychology at the University of Queensland and mother, Yvette Miller, Associate Professor in Public Health at Queensland University of Technology, both said they were “proud” of her for showing “incredible bravery”, when she felt it was time to “raise awareness and get people thinking”. The Year 4 student said the decision to take a stand was made “mostly” by herself but the subject had been discussed with her parents.

The fact that this very intelligent girl had discussed her actions with her obviously very well-educated parents led controversial right-wing senator and One Nation Party leader Pauline Hanson to posted a video response on Facebook labeling Harper a “brat” and “disgraceful”.
“Here we have a kid that has been brainwashed and I tell you what, I would give her a kick up the backside,” the 64-year-old said. “We’re talking about a child who has no idea,” she says, adding: “This kid is headed down the wrong path, and I blame the parents for it for encouraging this — no, take her out of the school.”

Jarrod Bleijie, Queensland’s shadow minister for education from the center-right Liberal National Party, also felt obliged to criticized Harper’s parents and called their daughter’s actions a “silly protest”.

But others, such as Australian journalist and television host Georgie Gardner, praised Harper for her “strength and character”.
“I do applaud her for considering the words of the national anthem, a lot of people just rattle it off and don’t consider the meaning,” she said.

Perhaps more importantly, Brisbane Aboriginal community elder Sam Watson said Harper’s parents should be congratulated. “They’ve obviously raised a very bright and vivacious young woman and this one is going to grow up and do big things in her life,” he said.

Mr Watson further praised Harper, calling her “wise and courageous” for rightfully pointing out the nation is not young and free. “Here’s a young girl who could have simply mouthed the words … but she pointed out that she didn’t believe in the lyrics, she didn’t accept the contradiction, so she’s going to make a statement in her own way so I say congratulations to that young girl,” Mr Watson said.

On Twitter, users posted messages of support using the hashtag #HarperNielsen, calling the schoolgirl “Australia’s most fantastic and brilliant brat” and “the hero Australia doesn’t realize it needs”.

Perhaps at this point in the story it is fitting to point out that Australia is the only Commonwealth country that does not have a treaty with its indigenous populations and that it had a somewhat lukewarm relationship with its anthem. Most Australians feel “fairly apathetic” towards the anthem, with people often accusing it of having dated language. Which isn’t so strange considering the anthem’s history. Until 19 April 1984, Australia never had its own national anthem; it was Britain’s “God Save the Queen” until then. Advance Australia Fair – written and composed by Peter Dodds McCormick in 1878 won a 1977 referendum to select a new anthem with only 43% of the vote. It took seven more years for the Australian government to proclaim it as Australia’s official national anthem.

Since then voices were raised to replace this anthem by “I am Australian” (or “We are Australians”) written in 1987 by Bruce Woodley of The Seekers and Dobe Newton of The Bushwackers. Its lyrics are filled with many historic and cultural references, such as to the “digger”, Albert Namatjira and Ned Kelly, among others, incorporating everything that is Australian to all Australians. The song was sung in federal parliament when last year’s plebiscite on same-sex marriage resulted in a resounding “yes”, and the national broadcasting company ABC has adopted the version below as its signature song.

I’m sure Harper would be proud to stand and sing it, and so would I, but the Pauline Hansons and Jarrod Bleijies of Australia will certainly prevent that from happening for some time to come.

From CNN: Nearly 3,000 people died in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. President Donald Trump denied this reality as a hurricane barrels toward the Carolinas.

"3000 people did not die in the two hurricanes that hit Puerto Rico. When I left the Island, AFTER the storm had hit, they had anywhere from 6 to 18 deaths. As time went by it did not go up by much. Then, a long time later, they started to report really large numbers, like 3000," he said in a tweet Thursday morning [Twit tweet delinked] as Carolinians prepared to be pummeled by Hurricane Florence.

Earlier this month, the island’s governor formally raised the death toll from Hurricane Maria to an estimated 2,975 from 64 following a study conducted by researchers at The George Washington University. CNN’s own reporting reflects similar numbers. The university study accounted for Puerto Ricans who succumbed to the stifling heat and other aftereffects of the storm and had not been previously counted in official figures. Much of the US territory was without power for weeks.

Land Theft!

Stinky Zinke, infamous for cronyism, luxury charter flights at your expense, and spending $139,000 on an unneeded set of oak doors for his office is at it again. Now, he is giving leases allowing fossil fuel companies to rape hundreds of up to 2.9 million acres of our land.

0912ZinkeTrump

The Department of Interior is quietly preparing to offer hundreds of thousands of acres of public land for leasing to energy companies, a move critics have charged is being undertaken with minimal public input and little consideration for ecological and cultural preservation.

According to data compiled by environmental groups, the Bureau of Land Management will put 2.9 million acres up for potential leasing in the next four months. Because the land in question — in states including New Mexico, Colorado and Arizona — lacks designation as a national park or monument, it can be used for commercial purposes such as mining for minerals and drilling for oil and gas. Supporters say that bolstering the extractive industries will ensure energy independence for the United States, though shifting energy preferences and falling oil prices appear to undermine that assertion.

Some 250 million acres of land are under the bureau’s control nationwide, with the overwhelming majority of the parcels concentrated in a dozen Western states, which sometimes chafe at what they regard as Washington’s inept oversight. That tension was most dramatically on display in 2014, when federal agents engaged in an armed standoff with the family of Cliven Bundy, a Nevada rancher with extreme right-wing views. The dispute arose from Bundy’s insistence on allowing his cattle to graze on public lands, a practice that saw him accrue some $1 million in fines, which he refused to pay.

The Bureau of Land Management is part of the Department of the Interior, which is today headed by Ryan Zinke, a Montana native who has styled himself a rugged conservationist, even as he maintains close ties to private enterprise. Many of his closest advisers at Interior have ties to the oil and gas industry, either as lobbyists or executives. His top deputy, for example, is David L. Bernhardt, a veteran Republican operative who has also lobbied on behalf of California agribusiness…

When the fossil fuel companies are done with the land, it will be unfit for any other use.  Such environmental destruction is especially inappropriate at a time when climate change demands we shift to green energy.

Woodward describes a conversation between Cohn, Trump, and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, based on anonymous sources — though many have suggested that Cohn himself appears to be a major source for the book.

"We should just go borrow a lot of money right now, hold it, and then sell it and make a lot of money," Trump told Cohn, according to the book.

"Cohn was astounded at Trump’s lack of basic understanding," Woodward writes. Cohn explained that Trump’s plan would balloon the federal deficit.

“What do you mean?” Trump asked in Woodward’s account. “Just run the presses — print money.”

11-911

This is a repetition of the editorials I published in 2011, 2014 and 2017 with minor alterations to bring it up to date.

Sixteen years ago this morning, the first airliner hit the tower, as I was about to leave for work. When I arrived, I learned about the second hit. My duties that day were to contact top executives of Fortune 500 companies headquartered in New York on behalf of our client, a major developer of computer operating systems, to arrange site visits and one-on-one executive interviews for our client’s research team. What timing! I felt uncomfortable calling, but the account exec’s assistant, an airhead and a Republican, ordered me to go to work. Many of my executive contacts were in the Twin Towers. I got on the telephone. Nobody was answering, and many of the lines were out of order. I did get through and spoke to a man in one of the towers above the fire, who knew he would not survive. He said he couldn’t dial out and gave me his home number. He asked me to call his wife and tell her he loved her. I did. She was pretty hysterical. Who could blame her. That shook me up so much that I went to the account executive’s office, and told him I was done calling New York for the day. He asked me what idiot had told me to call into New York under these circumstances. Because of that experience, I cannot think of 9/11 without my heart going out to the people who lost loved ones that tragic day, and I consider it imperative to do whatever we can, within reason, to prevent a reoccurrence. One failing, in that regard, is that we often ask who and how, but all too seldom, ask why. So as we remember the events of 9/11/2001, perhaps it may help if we consider the other 9/11, 9/11/1973. Twenty eight years earlier, the roles were reversed. Instead of being attacked, the US had arranged and was assisting an attack to overthrow the democratically elected government of Chile, and the installation of one of the most infamous dictators of the twentieth century, Augusto Pinochet. An article by Peter Kornblug from August 2003 describes and explains those events.

11allende On

September 14, 1970, a deputy to then-National Security Adviser Henry Kissinger wrote him a memo, classified SECRET/SENSITIVE, arguing against covert operations to block the duly elected Chilean socialist Salvador Allende from assuming the presidency. "What we propose is patently a violation of our own principles and policy tenets," noted Viron Vaky. "If these principles have any meaning, we normally depart from them only to meet the gravest threat to us., e.g. to our survival. Is Allende a mortal threat to the U.S.?" Vaky asked. "It is hard to argue this." Kissinger ignored this advice. The next day he participated in a now-famous meeting where President Nixon instructed CIA Director Richard Helms to "save Chile" by secretly fomenting a coup to prevent Allende’s inauguration. When those covert operations failed, Kissinger goaded Nixon into instructing the entire national security bureaucracy "on opposing Allende" and destabilizing his government. "Election of Allende as president of Chile poses one of [the] most serious challenges ever faced in this hemisphere," says a newly declassified briefing paper Kissinger gave to Nixon two days after Allende’s inauguration. "Your decision as to what to do may be most historic and difficult foreign affairs decision you will have to make this year…. If all concerned do not understand that you want Allende opposed as strongly as we can, result will be steady draft toward modus vivendi approach." 11kissinger_pinochetHad Washington adopted a "modus vivendi approach," it is possible that Chileans, indeed citizens around the world, would not be solemnly commemorating the thirtieth anniversary of the coup that brought Gen. Augusto Pinochet to power. In the United States, the meaning of this anniversary is, understandably, overshadowed by the shock and tragedy of our own 9/11. But Chile reminds us that the topics of debate on US foreign policy today–pre-emptive strikes, regime change, the arrogance of unilateral intervention, unchecked covert action and secrecy and dishonesty in government–are not new. From the thousands of formerly classified US documents released over the past several years, the picture that emerges strikes some haunting parallels with the news of the day. Chile, it must be recalled, constitutes a classic example of a pre-emptive strike–a set of operations launched well before Salvador Allende set foot in office. Nixon ordered the CIA on September 15, 1970, to "make the economy scream" and to foment a military move to block Allende from being inaugurated six weeks later, in November; the Chilean leader had yet to formulate or authorize a single policy detrimental to US interests. "What happens over [the] next 6-10 months will have ramifications far beyond US-Ch[ilean] relations," Kissinger predicted in a dire warning to Nixon only forty-eight hours after Allende actually took office. "Will have effect on what happens in rest of LA and developing world; our future position in hemisphere; on larger world picture…even effect our own conception of what our role in the world is." As in the distorted threat assessment on Iraq, this was sheer speculation–unsupported, indeed contradicted, by US intelligence. In August 1970 CIA, State and Defense Department analysts had determined that "the US has no vital national interests within Chile," and that the world "military balance of power would not be significantly altered" if Allende came to power… [emphasis added]

Inserted from <The Nation>

For many years, the United States has treated the rest of the world, particularly third world nations, as the private reserve of an American economic empire, repeatedly using force, usually covertly, any time a nation had the audacity to suggest that their resources should benefit their own people, not US corporations. Neither party is blameless, but the vast majority and most heinous of such actions occurred during Republican administrations. In the twentieth century, the United States overthrew more democratically elected governments and installed more dictators than any other nation ever has. No nation can stand toe-to-toe against the US on the battlefield, so guerilla tactics are the only option available to nations who would oppose us. We should also remember that there would be no such thing as Al Qaeda, had not Republicans under Reagan financed it’s formation to perform terrorist attacks against the USSR. I do not hate this country. I love the USA enough to insist that we actually practice the principles we claim to profess. These are the lessons we need to learn to prevent future terrorists attacks against the US. If we practice oppression, we guarantee resistance. If we practice partnership, we will get cooperation. We need to stop trying to control other countries by force, To forestall terrorism, we must stop participating in and supporting terrorism ourselves. We will be seen as hypocrites if we oppose ethnic cleansing by ISIL, but continue to support ethnic cleansing by Zionists. For the last lesson, let’s return to the story with which I began. Shortly after the account executive agreed that I was done for the day, the company shut down for the rest of the day too. Several of us gathered around the TV in the lunch room. Knowing that I am politically involved, coworkers asked me what I thought was going to happen. I told them that I thought Bush would use the attack as an excuse to do two things: to invade Iraq and to curtail civil liberates guaranteed under our Constitution. The last lesson is this. If we adopt the tactics of evil to oppose evil, we become no different than the evil we oppose. Even if we do all that, we must still be vigilant. Sadly there are forces in pseudo-Islam that pursue hatred against America, just as there are forces in pseudo-Christianity that pursue hatred against all who fail to obey their dogma, both for their own respective right-wing political agendas. The latter are the far more dangerous, both at home and abroad.  Now they have Trump skyrocketing their hatred to unprecedented extremes.
