In November 2010, I joined a site called Care2 and, largely because of the fine people there, I started supporting Care2 News Network by cross posting all my articles there.  That was thousands of articles ago.  It’s a sad day, because this is the last day that C2NN will be online.  Tomorrow Care2 will be petitions only.  I thank the site administrators there for years of service, and I respect their decision, despite my disappointment over it.

I’d like my many friends there who used C2NN to stay politically active here at Politics Plus.  Our URL is http://www.politicsplus.org/blog  Here’s some info to help you participate here.

To read and comment on Politics Plus, you don’t have to join.  Just go and do.  When you want to read comments or comment on an article, just click the title of the article.  Read the comments.  There is a comment box at the bottom.  To comment fill in your name and email address (always use the same name and email address each time you visit).  If you have a website, you may fill in your URL.  Otherwise, leave it blank.  Make your comment.  Click the Submit button.  The first comment you ever make will be held for moderation as a defense against SPAM.  We will approve it as soon as possible. After that, as long as the name/email address you enter remain exactly the same, and as long as your comment contains three links or less, it will not be held for moderation. There is a bug in our comment editor that complicates making nested replies to individual replies to articles. To do so, scroll to the comment box at the bottom, and fill it out as though you were commenting to the article, but don’t click the Submit button. Instead, scroll up to the comment to which you want to reply. Click the Reply link under that comment. When a non-functioning comment box opens under that reply, click the Submit button below that box, and your reply will appear nested under that reply. If you need help with anything, just holler. Our staff (Lynn, SoINeedAName, Joanne, Lona, and I) are damn good at it.

Whether or not you follow us home.  Thanks for all your support and thanks for the memories.

Hugs!

It’s a very busy WWWendy day here in the CatBox, so I’m in a big rush.

Back in the day, this was my favorite tune.  Ah… The memories! RESIST!!

From NBC News: President Donald Trump retweeted a conspiracy theory Saturday evening alleging without evidence that former President Bill Clinton was connected to the death of wealthy financier and accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, hours after Epstein was found dead by apparent suicide in his federal prison cell.

“Died of SUICIDE on 24/7 SUICIDE WATCH ? Yeah right! How does that happen,” Terrence K. Williams, a conservative commentator and comedian, wrote in the message retweeted by Trump. In a two-minute-long selfie video recording, Williams alleged that the Clintons were responsible for Epstein’s death.

Republicans routinely blame the Clintons for Crimes they committed themselves. RESIST!!

Trump doesn’t console. Trump does ass-sole.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe: Beyond Charlottesville

We need paper ballots EVERYWHERE! He’s too centrist for my tastes, but we ALL need to band together to defeat the Republican Reich and sweep them from power across the board.

Here in the shiny new CatBox, I’m running late because I slept poorly, overslept, and still feel groggy.  I read the results of the Cat Scan.  I have a hiatal hernia.  I also have two tiny nodes in my left lung (5 mm and 1 mm).  I have a routine appt. with my Oncologist to interpret the Cat Scan in 10 days, so I won’t panic until I know I have cause.  Tomorrow is a busy WWWendy day, but I’ll try to stay in the saddle, because it’s the last full day of Care2 News.

From YouTube (MSNBC Channel): Victims Of White Nationalist Terror Fight Back (And Win) In Court

That’s good! Also, Resident Donald Trump, the Tangerine Terrorist, Bought Bitch Moscow Mitch, and many other Republicans should have to pay millions in punitive damages. RESIST!!

From Common Dreams: Disgraced American billionaire and political insider Jeffrey Epstein was reported dead on Saturday morning from an apparent suicide in a New York City jail.

The New York Times reports:

Mr. Epstein hanged himself and his body was found this morning at Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan at roughly 7:30.

Manhattan federal prosecutors last month charged Mr. Epstein, 66, with sex trafficking of girls as young as 14, and details of his behavior have been emerging for years.

Mr. Epstein, a financier with opulent homes, a private jet and access to elite circles, had been dogged for decades by accusations that he had paid dozens of girls for sexual acts in Florida.

It makes no sense that Epstein had been removed from suicide watch.  I suspect that Epstein’s death may have been a Republicide, not a suicide. He had lots of  detailed dirt on a pants-load of super-rich Republican perverts, and he had an incentive to give it up. RESIST!!

From Think Progress: The signature promise of Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign was that he would build a massive wall along the nation’s southern border and that not a penny of it would be charged to the American taxpayer. He repeatedly boasted that he would get Mexico to pay for it.

But now that this lie has been all but abandoned, Senate Republicans reportedly plan to divert billions of dollars from health and education to make up the difference.

Roll Call reported on Thursday that Senate Appropriations Chairman Richard Shelby (R-AL) has written a Fiscal Year 2020 Labor-HHS-Education spending bill allocation “that is about $5 billion lower than it would have been to provide funding for the wall.” If this proposal gets the 60 votes required for passage in the Senate, it would still need to be negotiated with the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives.

Shelby has to know this will be shit-canned in conference committee. He’s just grandstanding to make the deplorable Republican Sheeple say BAAA-A-A-A-A!! RESIST!!

Everyday Erinyes #178

Experts in autocracies have pointed out that it is, unfortunately, easy to slip into normalizing the tyrant, hence it is important to hang on to outrage. These incidents which seem to call for the efforts of the Greek Furies (Erinyes) to come and deal with them will, I hope, help with that. As a reminder, though no one really knows how many there were supposed to be, the three names we have are Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone. These roughly translate as “unceasing,” “grudging,” and “vengeful destruction.”

I think all of us are aware that the FBI is knowledgeable about the threat posed by white nationalist domestic terrorism. After all, it has been issuing statements and warnings; the director, Christopher Wray, has been on TV talking about it (as TC posted just last Tuesday); and statistics are being pushed out. But what is the FBI actually DOING about domestic terrorism? Well, it turns out, that’s not such an easy question to answer.
==================================================================

The FBI Told Congress Domestic Terror Investigations Led to 90 Recent Arrests. It Wouldn’t Show Us Records of Even One.

ProPublica is a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative newsroom. Sign up for The Big Story newsletter to receive stories like this one in your inbox.

On July 23, FBI Director Christopher Wray told the Senate Judiciary Committee that federal investigations of domestic terrorism had led to some 100 arrests in the last nine months. While the FBI quickly announced that the number was 90, not 100, the basic message appeared unchanged: The FBI was actively investigating and prosecuting domestic terrorists.

The 90 arrests have been cited countless times since last weekend’s killing of 22 people in El Paso, Texas, by a man suspected of harboring racist views of immigrants. To find out more, we contacted the FBI on Monday, asking who had been arrested, as well as where and when, and what the allegations were in each case.

Four days later, we have been given next to no information about them.

Our first inquiry on Monday was straightforward: We asked for basic information about each of the 90 arrests, which we assumed had all been publicly announced.

An FBI spokeswoman wrote back: “We would not be able to provide you with a comprehensive list of these press releases. As there is no federal domestic terrorism statute so DT subjects are charged under other federal, state, and local charges.”

We understood that those arrested for committing or intending to commit violent acts on American soil are typically prosecuted for an assortment of crimes — murder, say, or illegal possession of firearms — not domestic terrorism, for which there’s no federal charge. The 90 people who were supposedly arrested might have been ultimately prosecuted by local authorities.

But it seemed clear from Wray’s statements that the FBI had done the work of determining which of the cases involving, as the spokeswoman put it, “other federal, state and local charges” involved elements of domestic terror. There had been a formal count. Wray had testified as much.

We wrote to the FBI again: “Thank you for getting back to me this fast and for your answer. I am a bit confused though: The number of DT arrests I was referring to originally comes from the FBI Director and was later clarified by a FBI spokesperson. So where would that number come from? I would be happy if you could clarify this point?”

The spokeswoman responded: “What do you mean? We clarified the number, it’s a comprehensive list of press releases that I’m saying we’re unable to provide.”

The spokeswoman, saying she was speaking “on background,” and thus not to be identified, later suggested that we go on the Department of Justice’s public affairs website and “see what pops up.”

So we did. When we typed in domestic terrorism arrests for the past nine months, five cases came up. But only one of the cases actually involved an American arrested for seeking to harm others in the U.S. — Cesar Sayoc, the man recently sentenced to 20 years for mailing 16 explosive devices to a variety of current and former government officials and the philanthropist George Soros.

Obviously, that was far short of the cases Wray had referenced. It also seemed odd that the FBI would suggest this approach to searching since it had to have done a more comprehensive compilation to equip its director with the numbers he gave the Senate Judiciary Committee.

We tried again: “Thanks for your reply! What I mean is: you clarified the number, so despite DT subjects being charged under ‘other federal, state, and local charges,’ as you wrote, the FBI obviously has information about all these cases. And this is what I’ve been originally asking for. So I would be glad if you could give me the following information about as many of the 90 arrests as possible: who was arrested, where, when and what the allegations were. If you are unable to provide this information or a comprehensive list of press releases I would like to know why.”

On the phone, she again cited the figure of 90 arrests, adding, “These are people that the FBI arrested as a result of a domestic terrorism investigation.”

But she also repeated that the bureau couldn’t give us any information, even press releases, about these arrests. “In their arrests they may not be characterized as domestic terrorists depending on how those arrests were made in the locality, in the state … so it’s just not something the FBI is able to publicly provide,” she said.

Yahoo News on Thursday published what it said was a document detailing the 2018 domestic terrorism arrests involving white supremacists, something the article said Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee had been unsuccessfully seeking from the Department of Justice.

“This map reflects 32 domestic terrorist attacks, disrupted plots, threats of violence, and weapons stockpiling by individuals with a radical political or social agenda who lack direction or influence from foreign terrorist organizations in 2018,” the document cited in the Yahoo article stated. The document, the article said, had been produced by New Jersey’s Office of Homeland Security Preparedness.

Late on Thursday, we tried to make things simpler with the FBI in hopes of getting some kind of firm answer: If the FBI could not quickly list the arrests stemming from domestic terrorism investigations, could it say how many such investigations had been carried out in 2019?

The spokeswoman did not respond to the request.

The entire exchange left us increasingly perplexed. The FBI had clearly been proud of its record in making arrests of possible domestic terrorists. Wray had testified that the bureau took the threat “extremely seriously.” The country was eager to be reassured in the aftermath of the killings in El Paso. Why wouldn’t the FBI be able to quickly cite its array of successes?

We asked the FBI if it could send us any of the press releases of the cases Wray had referenced specifically at the hearing. Once again, the spokeswoman demurred.

==================================================================

Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone, I do understand that the FBI needs to maintain a high level of secrecy in order to protect its ongoing investigations. I think we all understand that. But it doesn’t appear that the questions being asked by ProPublica are about ongoing investigations, but rather about arrests which have been made, and which, if justified, should become public record in the form of charges and prosecutions and maybe sometimes even plea deals. Perhaps there is something I’m missing here.

The Furies and I will be back.

Yesterday the Republican Reich demonstrated their heartlessness in a couple of ways.  First, their Brown Shirt thugs, aka ICE, raided several poultry plants in Mississippi and detained almost 700 law-abiding workers, but undocumented, workers.  Millionaire plant owners had imported most of them years before to replace black workers, because they were trying to unionize.  The raids terrorized the detainees, their families, and Latinos nationwide.  Second, Resident Donald Trump, Fuhrer of the Republican Reich, continued his hate campaign against Latinos, even while visiting El Paso, where he was pretending to support victims of a massacre he and other Republicans had inspired.

0809raid

On Wednesday people across the United States were shocked by the news that ICE raids at a handful of Mississippi chicken plants had resulted in the largest single-state immigration enforcement action in U.S. history, with nearly 700 people detained. As surprising as the news was, coming on the heels of a deadly mass shooting that targeted Latinos, perhaps just as surprising was the location of the raids in the deep, rural South.

The prominence of Latinos in Mississippi’s chicken plants and communities today was not accidental. It was calculated, strategic and intimately related to deeply rooted structures of labor exploitation in the region. Beginning in the 1990s, Latin American immigrants were recruited to the state by the poultry industry, where they arrived to work in some of the lowest-paid and most dangerous jobs in the country. This week’s raids target deeply rooted workers and families and leave behind a devastated community, while also terrorizing many others across the country.

The roots of the heavily Latino workforces in Southern poultry plants lie in the growing American appetite for chicken during the 1990s, and the stirrings of a labor movement by African American plant workers. As poultry production expanded, workers’ pay and opportunities remained stagnant. As a result, labor organizing among the plants’ predominantly African American workforce began to gain traction.

Facing the prospect of its first union contract negotiations and in search of more “flexible” (read: exploitable and expendable) workers, in 1994 a chicken plant in Morton, Miss., headed to Miami in search of immigrant labor… [emphasis added]

What President Donald Trump Was Really Doing During El Paso Visit

Trump’s total lack of empathy is a major reason Republicans chose him as Fuhrer of their Reich.

From Daily Kos: The Southern Poverty Law Center’s Hatewatch has discovered a current official, Matthew Q. Gebert, works as a foreign affairs officer assigned to the Bureau of Energy Resources.

Raw Story, reporting on the SPLC discovery, notes that “Gebert has been with the department since 2013, and has for years gone by the online name of “Coach Finstock,” which he has used to spread white supremacist propaganda and advocate for a whites-only country.”

According to Hatewatch:

“A U.S. State Department official oversaw the Washington, D.C.-area chapter of a white nationalist organization, hosted white nationalists at his home and published white nationalist propaganda online, Hatewatch has determined.”

I’m not sure that publishing this was a good idea. Now that they are aware of his racist hatred, the Republican leadership is likely to promote him. RESIST!!

A circle of life’s journey was completed at Dallas Love Field Airport yesterday.

Fifty-two years ago, 5 year-old Bryan Knight waved goodbye to his father, US Air Force Maj. Roy A. Knight, Jr., as he departed Dallas Love Field for service in Vietnam.

Bryan never saw his father again.

Maj. Knight was leading a flight of two aircraft on a strike mission attacking a military target on the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Laos when his plane was shot down on May 19, 1967. According to the Defense POW/MIA Account Agency: “No parachute was observed prior to the aircraft crashing and bursting into flames.”

Knight was listed as MIA and subsequently declared deceased in September 1974, when Bryan was just 12.

In 1991 a joint U.S.-Laos team investigated a crash site believed to be where Knight’s plane went down. The team recommended it for excavation, and over the years the site was examined five times.

In early 2019 possible human remains were found, and after extensive evaluation, were identified as now Col. Knight. (He was promoted while listed as MIA.)

Col. Knight is one of the 1,000 Americans killed in the Vietnam conflict whose remains have been identified, according to the Defense Dept. There are still more than 1,500 who remain unaccounted for.

Bryan Knight, the son who waved good-bye to his Dad 52 year ago has become a pilot for Southwest Airlines. And when he learned his Dad’s remains had been found, he described it as “surreal”.  “I really didn’t think it would ever happen. Wow, you know, he’s really coming home. We’re going to be able to bring him back, and we’re going to have a place where we can honor him.”

Col. Knight’s remains were flown from Honolulu to California. And Bryan Knight, who waved good-bye to his Dad 52 years ago, was the pilot who flew his father’s remains from California to Dallas Love Field – the site the two last ever saw each other.

When the plane carrying Col. Knight’s remains touched down, it was greeted with firetrucks shooting water cannons as the family waited to receive the flag-draped coffin.

And as a tearful gate agent recounted Col. Knight and his family’s story, the bustling airport came to a quiet standstill.

Passengers flocked to the windows to watch, many wiping away tears and some saluting as the coffin departed the plane to the care of a military honor guard.

It was a well-deserved hero’s welcome that most Vietnam veterans never received. And in a dark week from the horrors of the mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton (made only darker by the appalling egomaniacal performance by the occupant of our Oval Office) – it was a bright spot of hope.

For that, we thank you Col. Roy and son Bryan Knight.

Col. Knight will be buried Saturday with full military honors. You can read his Obituary here:
