It’s a busy day, here in the CatBox, as WWWendy will be here in less than two hours. I couldn’t keep my supper down last night, but I did manage a small bowl of Cheerios this morning. Yesterday I meditated on the Holy Orb. Congrats Pat. Was that a comeback, or what? Kudos to Tennessee, for eliminating the team that licks Trump’s* sphincter!

From BBC: President Trump has warned the US is “targeting” 52 Iranian sites and will strike “very fast and very hard” if Tehran attacks Americans or US assets.
The president’s remarks followed the US assassination of Qasem Soleimani, a top Iranian general, in a drone strike.
Soleimani’s killing was a major escalation between the two nations, and Iran vowed to take “severe revenge”.
Writing on Twitter, Mr Trump accused Iran of “talking very boldly about targeting certain USA assets”.
He said the US had identified 52 Iranian sites, some “at a very high level & important to Iran & the Iranian culture”, and warned they would be “HIT VERY FAST AND HARD” if Tehran struck at the US.
The president said the targets represented 52 Americans who were held hostage in Iran for more than a year from late 1979 after they were taken from the US embassy in Tehran.
I understand Fuhrer Trump also said some were cultural sites, indicating his intent to attack civilians, while Iran stated that their retaliation would be against military targets. Trump and the Republican Reich are now threatening the war crime of military terrorism against women and children. RESIST!!

Experts in autocracies have pointed out that it is, unfortunately, easy to slip into normalizing the tyrant, hence it is important to hang on to outrage. These incidents which seem to call for the efforts of the Greek Furies (Erinyes) to come and deal with them will, I hope, help with that. As a reminder, though no one really knows how many there were supposed to be, the three names we have are Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone. These roughly translate as “unceasing,” “grudging,” and “vengeful destruction.”
There are two areas which I can’t really cover with the Erinyes, because they are just too big, and because they are not stable but fluid in nature, and even one of those reasons would make either topic unmanageable. Those subjects are war and impeachment. They are also pretty much what is in the news at this point
But it’s never the wrong time for a little education So here is some.
==================================================================
What everyone should know about Reconstruction 150 years after the 15th Amendment’s ratification
I’ll never forget a student’s response when I asked during a middle school social studies class what they knew about black history: “Martin Luther King freed the slaves.”
Martin Luther King Jr. was born in 1929, more than six decades after the time of enslavement. To me, this comment underscored how closely Americans associate black history with slavery.
While shocked, I knew this mistaken belief reflected the lack of time, depth and breadth schools devote to black history. Most students get limited information and context about what African Americans have experienced since our ancestors arrived here four centuries ago. Without independent study, most adults aren’t up to speed either.
I’m excited about new resources for teaching children, and everyone else, more about the history of slavery through The New York Times’ “1619 Project.” But based on my experience teaching social studies and my current work preparing social studies educators, I also consider understanding what happened during the Reconstruction essential for exploring black power, resilience and excellence.
As most students do learn, the U.S. gained three constitutional amendments that extended civil and political rights to newly freed African Americans following the Civil War.
The 13th, ratified in 1865, banned slavery and involuntary servitude except for the punishment of a crime.
The 14th, ratified three years later, granted citizenship and equal protection under the law to all people born in the United States, as well as naturalized citizens – including all previously enslaved individuals.
Then, the 15th Amendment asserted that neither the federal government nor state governments could deny voting rights to any male citizen.
The year 2020 marks the 150th anniversary of the ratification of the 15th Amendment on Feb. 3, 1870. The anniversary is a good opportunity to learn about how the amendment was supposed to guarantee that the right to vote could not be denied based on “race, color, or previous condition of servitude.”
What few history and social studies classes explore is how these changes to the Constitution made it possible for African American men to use their newfound political power to gain representation.
White supremacist groups like the Ku Klux Klan also formed following the Civil War. These terrorist groups engaged in violence and other racist tactics to intimidate African Americans, people of color, black voters and legislators. They thus made the accomplishments of African American politicians even more impressive as they served as public officials under the constant threat of racial violence.
African American women technically gained the right to vote in 1920, when the 19th Amendment passed. However, their constitutional right was limited in many states due to discriminatory laws.
Many black women were activists and women’s suffrage movement leaders. Through public speaking, prolific writing and developing organizations dedicated to racial and and gender equality, they fought for equal rights and dignity for all.
Among the black women who were activists during Reconstruction were the five Rollins sisters of South Carolina, who fought for female voting rights; Maria Stewart, an outspoken abolitionist before the Civil War and suffragist once it ended; and Mary Ann Shadd Cary, the first black woman in North America to edit and publish a newspaper, one of the first black female lawyers in the country and an advocate for granting women the right to vote.
Other women of color who played key roles in the suffrage movement included Ida B. Wells, the journalist and civil rights advocate who raised awareness of lynching, and Mary Church Terrell, founder of the National Association of Colored Women.
Higher education
Before the Civil War, many states made teaching enslaved individuals to read a crime. Education quickly became a top priority for black Americans once slavery ended.
While northern, largely white philanthropists and missionary groups and the U.S. Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands, better known as the Freedmen’s Bureau, did help create new educational opportunities, the African American public schools established after the Civil War ended were largely built and staffed by the black community.
These schools trained black people to become teachers and ministers, doctors and nurses. They also prepared African Americans for careers in industrial and agricultural fields.

Historical experiences
Storytelling, multimedia experiences and trips to historic sites and creative museums help get people of any age interested in learning about history.
Depending on where you live, you may want to embark on a family outing or school field trip.
The National Constitution Center in Philadelphia has a new permanent exhibit on the Civil War and Reconstruction.
The National Museum of African American History and Culture, which opened in Washington, D.C. in 2017, contains artifacts from the Reconstruction era. It’s also making the records of the Freedmen’s Bureau, including the names of formerly enslaved individuals following the Civil War, available online.
“The slave went free; stood for a brief moment in the sun; then moved back again toward slavery,” he explained.
This was by no means voluntary. Intimidated and threatened by black enfranchisement and excellence in the era of Reconstruction, white supremacists attempted to enforce subordination through violence, such as lynching; and in systemic ways through Jim Crow laws. African Americans continued to assert their civil and constitutional rights as activists, politicians, business owners, teachers and farmers in the midst of white supremacist backlash.
With the latest voter suppression efforts restricting access to the ballot box for voters of color and the resurgence of racist violence and vitriol today, DuBois’ words sound eerily familiar. At the same time it’s reassuring to recall how quickly formerly enslaved African Americans made their way to schoolhouses and public offices.
================================================================== Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone, This overview just really scratches the surface. I have seen Dr. Gates’s documentary, and it goes deeper (and I’m delighted to know that it’s currently available to stream. Not everything always is. I may have to bite the bullet and purchase it.) But at least this overview will give anyone who wasn’t aware an idea of just how much we weren’t aware of. Especially since we appear currently to be paying a huge price for not knowing our full and accurate history. Perhaps you can lead us to more resources for deeper learning.

From Crooks and Liars: The reasons that Donald Trump would need a massive distraction at this point are numerous. Every day seems to produce fresh evidence that the White House was fully aware that Trump’s delay of military assistance to Ukraine was simply against the law, and that multiple officials engaged in a criminal conspiracy to cover up for Trump and retroactively create an excuse for an inexcusable act. Somewhere right now, Mitch McConnell is probably drafting a statement claiming that the Senate could not possibly consider an impeachment trial “during a time of war.”
But onto that stack of dog-wagging rationales add this one: According to Forensic News, Trump’s loans from Deutsche Bank were underwritten by a Russian state-owned bank. That news reportedly comes from a whistleblower with access to documents from both Deutsche Bank and Russia’s state-owned VTB Bank. VTB Bank was also the proposed lender on the never-completed Trump Tower Moscow project.
The question of why Deutsche Bank would extend a series of huge loans to Trump has been dangling since before he ever announced his candidacy for president on a golden escalator ride. When Trump first went to Deutsche Bank, he was worse than broke. He had just finished bankrupting multiple casinos in New Jersey, and then had convinced investors to back a takeover of those casinos at a fraction of the original value. Then Trump deliberately allowed the investment group to go bankrupt so he could grab the whole deal himself at a fraction of what his investors had paid. Then he went bankrupt. Again. And along the way he was socked with a massive fine for money laundering at his now bankrupt (again) casino.
Trump was so fiscally radioactive that no American bank would let him in the door. But Deutsche Bank turned around and gifted Trump with loans that gave him a fresh start and an apparently miracle turnaround of his New York real estate empire. Those loans have always been the subject of head-scratching over just what Deutsche Bank could have been thinking. But if Forensic News is right, what Deutsche Bank was thinking was that it wasn’t risking a damn thing, because the Russian government was actually vouching for Trump through VTB Bank. If Trump didn’t come through, Vladimir Putin was offering to make it good.

Cath Bowdler and Jack Egan lost just about everything when their North Rosedale home, south of Bateman’s Bay in coastal New South Wales, went up in flames. ABC NEWS 4 December 2020.*
After a few harrowing hours during which they didn’t know if the other had survived the ordeal, they returned to where their home had stood to survey what was left of their property after the blaze that hit on New Year’s Eve.
The pair made it through the emergency alive, but their home was reduced to a mass of warped iron, scorched wood and ash. Only a sign Mr Egan made to campaign for climate action somehow survived the blaze.
“I didn’t expect the sign to make the point so strikingly as it does now,” Mr Egan noted and he had asked Ms Bowdler take a photo of him by the sign with the remains of their home in the shot to make a point.
I think this foto may well turn out to become the most iconic and poignant Climate Change picture of 2020.
Update
I know there’s a limit to how many NYT articles you can read per month, but I can highly recommend this opinion article: Australia Is Committing Climate Suicide. As record fires rage, the country’s leaders seem intent on sending it to its doom. By Richard Flanagan, a renowned Australian author.
In the rolling hills of Paso Robles, CA there is a most amazing art installation: Field of Light, by British artist Bruce Munro.
Consisting of over 58,800 spheres on 2.5′ stems and lit by solar-powered fiber optics, they illuminate the countryside in every color of the rainbow – and gradually change their hues.
It’s part of a larger series of Field of Light installations that stretch across the globe. You can view more of his installations at the Munro Website.
His inspiration for the projects came from a camping trip in Australia’s Red Desert to Uluru Rock (also known as Ayres) where he was struck by how the desert appears barren and infertile – until a rainfall makes the flowers bloom.
Munro envisioned a field of lights like dormant seeds in a dry desert that would “bloom” when darkness fell. This inspiration was realized in Munro’s installation at Uluru Rock in Australia – which uses 326 miles of optic fiber to create. It is on display indefinitely.
The Paso Robles installation covers 15 acres of Sensorio – an interactive garden and art center owned by Ken Hunter. It took five weeks for 20 staff members and other volunteers to construct the exhibit. Over 2,000 people visited it on just the first weekend it was opened.
The Field of Light display at Sensorio is open Wednesdays through Sundays from 7 to 11 PM until June 2020. Adult admission is $27 on Wednesday and Thursday and $30 Friday through Sunday. Tickets for children age 12 and under are $9 on Wednesday, $18 on Thursday and $19 Friday through Sunday. Children under age 2 get in for free. To learn more and reserve tickets, visit sensoriopaso.com or call (805) 226-4287.
Needless to say, it’s been a magnet for photographers – so let’s enjoy some of the ephemeral beauty. And I’ll admit I’m going a little overboard. But they were all so gorgeous (not sure you could take a bad picture) I couldn’t decide what to eliminate – so I didn’t!
GHW Bush needed something to increase his popular support to aid his reelection. When Saddam Hussein decided to invade Kuwait over an oil dispute, he notified the US Ambassador to Iraq, April Glaspie. She told him the US has “no opinion on the Arab-Arab conflicts, like your border disagreement with Kuwait” and that the US has “no special defense or security commitments to Kuwait.” That’s diplo-speak for, “Go for it”. When Saddam invaded, the Bush administration paraded the Kuwaiti Ambassador’s daughter, who had been here in the US for over a year, before Congress. She pretended to be a nurse in a Kuwaiti hospital and lied that Iraqi troops had pulled babies from incubators and murdered then. Bush had his war. It’s a standard Republican tactic. Unfortunately for Bush, Gen. Collin Powell defeated Iraq so quickly that the war was over too soon, and Bush lost his election anyway. This is exactly why Donald Trump*, impeached Resident, is now trying to start a war with Iran.
MSNBC’s James Stavridis warned that President Donald Trump’s order to kill Iranian general Qassim Suleimani would dangerously escalate tensions in the Middle East — which could blow back on the United States.
The retired U.S. Navy admiral and supreme allied commander of NATO told “Morning Joe” that Suleimani, who led the clandestine Quds Force, was dangerous — but he said the killing would inflame an already tense situation.
“Suleimani is an evil person, he’s a villain,” Stavridis said. “We are better off tactically for his piece being taken off the chessboard. He was smart, he constructed very clever attacks on us, so tactically this is a positive.”
The retired admiral agreed that Suleimani was the most significant military figure in the Middle East over the past generation, but he worried about the president’s strategy.
“Tactically, I’m glad he’s gone,” Stavridis said. “Strategically, however, we are pouring gasoline on a smoldering fire with no structure or strategy for where we’re going to take this thing next, and I’ll tell you the Pentagon today is going to be on all hands on deck doing the defensive measures all over the world to make sure that we’re prepared for the response, because there will be a significant response.”…[emphasis added]
It is clear that Pompeo’s statement that this act of was was a deterrent is a lie. Throwing a stick of dynamite into a tinder box is an invitation to explode, not a deterrent. However, Trump repeatedly predicted that Barack Obama would attack Iran to ensure his reelection in 2012. That is what Trump has in mind. I hope it doesn’t work. I fear Iran’s retaliation will cause much suffering by innocents.
Trump was required by law to notify the gang of eight. I understand he notified only Lindsey Poo. He notified no Democrats, saying they would have leaked his plans. Liar!

Netanyahu submitted the request to the Knesset late Wednesday night, saying he plans on leading the country “for many years to come.”
“What is being done to me is a field court-martial by misleading the public,” Netanyahu said in a televised statement Wednesday evening in Jerusalem. “The immunity law is intended to protect elected officials from fabricated legal proceedings — from political indictment intended to damage the will of the people.
