The world is dealing with an unprecedented health crisis caused by a new virus. With new insights in the way COVID19 spreads, in the way the virus behaves and in the way to deal with the pandemic every day, it is now more important than ever to safeguard the information we share is accurate and fact-based. We have to inoculate ourselves against the fake news and misinformation that infect our newsfeeds and timelines at this crucial moment by fact-checking.

For the duration of the pandemic, I will try to give you an overview of the main issues in CoronaCheck, an Australian email newsletter with the latest from around the world concerning the coronavirus, but now appear only once a week.*

The COVID-19 misinformation and disinformation market seems to be near saturation-point and fewer new debunkings are mentioned each week. Fact-checkers are now turning to other disinformation doing the rounds which aren’t pertinent to this series. Only one (Australian) story is worth mentioning, as it has been turned global by notorious conspiracy theorist David Icke.

NURSING HOMES DO NOT GET A PAID IF THEIR RESIDENTS DIE OF COVID-19

As has been reported for several weeks, Victoria had seen a surge in new cases which has led to a nearly full lockdown for the greater Melbourne area for six weeks.

The virus is particularly rampant aged-care homes, and the death toll in these homes is staggering by Australian norms. Australia had a total of 361 deaths to date, so a daily death rate above 14, with the highest at 19, is shocking. About 70% of these deaths are in aged care.

A post shared widely on Facebook claims that a caller to Sydney FM radio station The Edge told how his friend’s 79-year-old father, who was suffering terminal cancer, had his cause of death wrongly listed as COVID-19. This was supposedly for the nursing home in which he died to receive a payment from the Federal Government.

“The Australian govt is handing out $25,000 to all nursing homes who label covid as the main cause of deaths on death certificates,” the post states.

In another anecdote detailed in the post, a family was supposedly offered $9,000 by a nursing home to have their relative’s cause of death listed as COVID-19.

The post attracted the attention of former English footballer David Icke, who shared it on his website and also to his 350,000+ Twitter followers.

A spokeswoman for The Edge confirmed to Fact-check that such a call did take place on the morning of August 7, but that the caller claimed the $25,000 payment would be made to the family for funeral costs, rather than to the nursing home as suggested in the Facebook post.

“During the two-minute call, the hosts of the breakfast program were clearly surprised by the information that the caller provided, and were openly skeptical about its veracity,” the spokeswoman said. “One host referred to it as sounding like a conspiracy theory, also adding that he wouldn’t take the caller’s word on it.” She added that to avoid generating, disseminating or promoting misinformation the audio of the call was “not repeated on the station’s online, podcast or social media assets”.

In any case, there is no evidence that either the information provided by the caller or posted to Facebook are factual.

In an email, a spokeswoman for the Department of Health told Fact-check that “the comments made in the Facebook post are false”. Furthermore, “Australians are encouraged to rely on reputable and authoritative sources of information to help them make informed choices and stay up to date.

In a later email, a spokesman added that the department was not aware of any payment for funeral costs made to families of deceased COVID-19 victims.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for Victoria’s Department of Health and Human Services said that any payments to bereaved families or nursing homes would have to come from the Federal Government.

Sean Rooney, the CEO of Leading Age Services Australia (LASA), which is the national peak body representing all providers of age services across residential care, home care and retirement living, told Fact-check that aged care homes were “not being provided with payments for people who pass away with COVID-19”.

In an email, he said: “The comments that have been shared [on Facebook] are false and we encourage all people to rely on credible sources, such as the Department of Health and Leading Age Services Australia” and added that LASA was not aware of any disputes arising from the listing of cases of  COVID-19 in aged care.

GRAPHICS OF THE WEEK

In a series of maps and graphs, news website Vox has depicted the extent of the COVID-19 outbreak across the US.

This map shows the percentage of tests returning positive in each state. In states such as Florida and Texas, more than 15 per cent of tests are returning positive results for COVID-19. By comparison, the positive test rate since January 22 in Victoria is 0.8 per cent.

Compared to some other countries in the world, the positive rate of the US is also striking.

Things that don’t cure and/or prevent COVID-19

#39: Vinegar
“There is no evidence that eating, drinking or washing with vinegar does anything to stop Covid-19.” – Full Fact

It’s a busy day here in the CatBox.  Store to Door should come with my groceries between 11 and 12:30.  WWWendy will be coming at around 5:00 to destink the gross TomCat, change my pain patch, goop, and help with chores.  My first Pembrolizumab treatment is scheduled next Wednesday.  Because of WWWendy’s work schedule, I have to take the TriMet Lift bus there, but I timed it to finish at 4:30 PM so WWWendy can pick me up.  Thank you all for your prayers and support.  Have a great day.

Plus the many dead Republicans are hiding from us

Short Takes:

From Politico (June): The House’s highest-ranking Republicans are racing to distance themselves from a leading GOP congressional candidate in Georgia after POLITICO uncovered hours of Facebook videos in which she expresses racist, Islamophobic and anti-Semitic views.

The candidate, Marjorie Taylor Greene, suggested that Muslims do not belong in government; thinks black people “are held slaves to the Democratic Party”; called George Soros, a Jewish Democratic megadonor, a Nazi; and said she would feel “proud” to see a Confederate monument if she were black because it symbolizes progress made since the Civil War.

Greene finished first in a primary for a deep-red, northwest Georgia seat last week by a nearly 2-to-1 margin over the second-place candidate. She is entering an August runoff as the favorite to secure the Republican nomination for a district where that is tantamount to winning the general election in November. Her initial victory — which has sparked panic in GOP circles — comes as Republicans are grappling with a national reckoning over racial injustice and police brutality after George Floyd, an unarmed black man, was killed by a Minneapolis police officer last month.

Barf Bag Alert!!

Greene, who is also a member of the QAnon Republican conspiracy cult, just won the runoff, so I predict several Parades for this Republican ding bat after January. If I’m dead, someone else will have to take over Parade duty.  RESIST!!

From YouTube (MSNBC Channel): Joe: There Is Nothing Radical, Left-Wing About Funding The USPS

Republicans have wanted to defund the post office long before they made Trump* their Fuhrer. UPS and FedEx have contributed BIG bucks for the oligopoly. But criminal Fuhrer Trump* has other reasons. He can’t win without stealing the election or staging a coup through the Gestapo we saw in Portland!  Killing USPS serves both crimes.  RESIST!!

Yesterday, Joe Biden announced that he has selected Kamala Harris to be his running mate against Resident Donald Trump, criminal Fuhrer of the Nazi Republican Fifth Reich, and Vice-Resident Mike Pence, homophobic, misogynous, pseudo-Christian Hate Monger.  I’m sure we’ll have much more about her as time passes.

Who is Kamala Harris?

55 years old

Born in Oakland, Calif.; lives in San Francisco and Washington

Elected to the Senate in 2016

Former attorney general of California; former San Francisco district attorney

Harris’s signature issues

In her presidential campaign last year, Kamala Harris pitched herself as a history-making candidate who could appeal to both progressives and moderates. Rather than trying to upend the economy, her policies sought incremental, targeted results, particularly focusing on historically marginalized groups like women, people of color and low-income Americans. Her sharp debate skills and affable personality made her a top-tier contender in the early stages of the primary race. But her oscillations between policy positions resulted in damaging news cycles, and she dropped out of the race as her campaign ran out of money. In naming Ms. Harris as his running mate, Joseph R. Biden Jr. made a groundbreaking decision, picking a woman of color to be vice president. But he was also elevating a senator who shares his center-left politics at a time of progressive change in the party…

Trump Now Headed For 2020 Loss With Kamala Harris On Ticket, Dems Say

Wow! I almost feel sorry for that hateful pseudo-Christian hypocrite, Pence. At the VP debate Kamala is going to beat him up, take his lunch money, chew him up, spit him out, and make him cry for his mama!

Congrats and Kudos to Kamala!

It’s a relatively comfortable day, here in the CatBox with two days in the 70°s, before the next heat wave builds to a 100°+ weekend.  WWWendy and WWKristin returned safely and happy, albeit sunburned.  They return your greetings and kind wishes.  Tomorrow I may have no more than as Personal Update or an Open Thread.  It’s a WWWendy day, but I won’t know when she’s coming until after she gets her work schedule later today.  It’s also a grocery delivery day.  Happy Hump Day to all!

Trump* Virus Update:

US Cases: 5,309,622
US Deaths: 167,789

Short Takes:

From The New Yorker: In a rare instance of praising one of his White House predecessors, Donald J. Trump on Tuesday hailed Woodrow Wilson for opposing efforts to institute online learning during the 1918 pandemic.

“There were a lot of crybabies in 1918 saying, ‘The schools aren’t safe—let the kids learn on their computers,’ ” Trump told reporters at the White House. “Woody wouldn’t hear of it.”

Instead, Trump said, “Kids went to school and the influenza just kind of disappeared eventually. Woody did a fantastic job.”

Dang, Andy! Are you sure he didn’t praise Wilson because of his overt racism and KKK support?  RESIST!!

From Alternet: Remember when political reporters crowed about what a masterful play Majority Leader Mitch McConnell had made when he lined up his caucus to acquit Donald Trump without hearing from a single witness? Yeah, that acquittal came on February 6 when U.S. senators were already getting briefed on the seriousness of the coronavirus’ spread abroad.

But Senate Republicans, led by McConnell, fell all over themselves to make sure Trump was at the helm when the pandemic hit U.S. shores. Now, what once looked like a promising cycle for Senate Republicans has turned entirely treacherous precisely because the caucus is saddled with Trump as their standard bearer.

Politico reports the party is directing nearly its entire $100 million war chest at saving the seats of eight incumbent senators while the few GOP candidates aiming to defeat a Democrat have been left almost entirely to their own devices. With the exception of funneling a little money into the effort to defeat Democratic Sen. Doug Jones in Alabama, they simply don’t have the resources to play offense.

The seat of Democratic Sen. Gary Peters from Michigan, for instance, once seemed like a flippable seat. But as Trump has tanked in the state and Joe Biden is presently positioned very well there, Senate Republicans have left Republican candidate John James to fend for himself.

Instead, GOP groups, including the National Republican Senatorial Committee and the McConnell-aligned Senate Leadership Fund have been trying to bolster their defenses in Georgia, Iowa, and Montana—three states that weren’t even on the radar as potential Democratic pick ups when the cycle started.

I wonder how much of that money is going to help Bought Bitch Midnight Moscow Mitch. This shows how desperate the Republican Reich has become. May all their efforts fail!  RESIST!!

The more time that goes on, the more obvious it becomes that Resident Donald Trump*, traitor, criminal, and Fuhrer of the Republican Fifth Reich, cannot win the November 2020 election.  That leaves him two ways to try to cling to power.  Will he try to steal the election?  Failing that, will he ignore it?

0811TrumpPower

CNN reporter April Ryan believes if President Trump loses the 2020 presidential election, he will have to be removed from the oval office by force.

Many have wondered whether Trump will leave willingly if he loses the election and what would happen if he refuses to concede to Joe Biden. Trump didn’t calm fears when he refused to give a straight answer about accepting a Democratic win on November 3.

During a Sunday appearance on CNN Newsroom with host Ana Cabrera, Cabrera asked Ryan and guest Bill Kristol about the president downplaying mail-in ballots and attempting to delay mid-term elections. Ryan responded calling Trump a hypocrite for using mail-in ballots himself and said he’s trying to suppress votes…  [emphasis added]

Trump Wielding Presidency Like An Autocrat: To Preserve His Power

Trump* is the symptom, not the disease.  Long before Trump* became Fuhrer of the Republican Reich, I have warned you over and over again.  Republicans will do whatever they can to establish a permanent, National Socialist, plutocratic Republican Reich.  They want elections to exist for show only, as they decide who gets to vote, and they count the votes.  Right now they have never been closer to achieving that goal.  We must stop them at all costs!

It’s a crazy day here in the CatBox.  Providence already approved the Pembrolizumab treatments.  WWWendy will get her schedule tomorrow from school, and I’ll be scheduling treatments as soon as I know what’s best for her.  The 25 µg Fentanyl patch is giving me much better pain relief.  For the first time in months, my pain level has been zero all day, except for when I Republicated a brick that made my hemorrhoids bleed.  May all your Republicans be softer.

Trump* Virus Update:

US Cases: 5,254,561
US Deaths: 166,295

Short Takes:

From Daily Kos: Donald Trump has repeatedly and far-too-publicly mused over wanting his own face carved into Mount Rushmore. This we knew. Over the weekend, however, we learned that it has gone a bit farther than mere public desire: On Saturday, The New York Times reported that an unnamed Trump White House aide “reached out” to the office of South Dakota’s Republican governor to inquire as to what the process of adding new heads to Mount Rushmore might actually be.

Mt. Rushmore is on sacred Native American land. Can you imagine anything more sacrilegious than carving the head of criminal Fuhrer Trump* in a sacred place?  RESIST!!

From NY Times: President Trump is considering new immigration rules that would allow border officials to temporarily block an American citizen or legal permanent resident from returning to the United States from abroad if the authorities have reason to believe the person may be infected with the coronavirus.

In recent months, Mr. Trump has imposed sweeping rules that ban entry by foreigners into the United States, citing the risk of allowing the virus to spread from hot spots abroad. But those rules have exempted two categories of people trying to return: American citizens and foreigners who have already established legal residence.

Worrying about spreading Trump* virus from Mexico to the US is bass ackwards. Mexico should be worried, not the US. Being Black or Latino will be “reason to believe the person may be infected” with Trump* virus, especially before election day.  RESIST!!

Last weekend, Resident Donald Trump*, Fuhrer of the Nazi Republican Reich, promised a press conference in which he would explain how he would provide his own relief plan for the American People.  It was really a campaign rally, delivered at taxpayer expense from his own Bedminster, NJ country club, while greedy Republican billionaires cheered him on.  Everything he said and everything his supporters, like Larry Kudlow, said later were lies.

According to the Washington Post, his so-called unemployment relief created a whole new program that would take months to set up.  States would have to pay $100 of the $400 per person per month payments, and pay for the administration of the program.  Trump also said he would suspend payroll taxes.  These are not taxes at all, but the entitlement payments that fund Social Security and Medicare.  He said he will terminate those “taxes”, if reelected.  The so-called rent relief provides for studies, but no relief at all. The measure on student loans is just a two month extension of the relief Democrats passed in March.

According to the NY Times, the Trump* plan included no relief for small businesses, schools, or state and local governments.

According to Market Watch, workers would still be on the hook to repay the payroll tax relief by April 15.  Unless governors request the unemployment relief and can afford to pay their share, workers will receive nothing.  Since Republicans are funding the program with money repurposed from from disaster relief funds, the program will run out of money in two months and leave nothing for disaster relief during hurricane season.

On the other hand, if Trump steals the White House again, and eliminates the “payroll taxes” permanently, Republicans will have an excuse to cut Social Security and Medicare, as they have wanted to do for years.

In short, this is nothing but a dog and pony show, intended to make Trump* look good before the election, but providing virtually no relief.

I’ll leave you with wise words from Nancy Pelosi.

Pelosi calls Trump’s executive actions ‘absurdly unconstitutional’
