One particularly horrid example of capitalism out of control is our current “corrections” system. A number of states have entered into contracts with private firms to run prisons, only to discover it is costing more than paying off. Many contracts with prison companies include clauses requiring the states to keep their big houses full to a certain percentage – or the company can exact a large penalty. When crime rates drop, the supply of inmates dries up, so police are forced to arrest people for picayune charges, and judges must impose longer sentences.

The so-called war on drugs has turned us into the Land of the Incarcerated. The United States accounts for only 4% of the world’s population but a quarter of all inmates. Judges have their hands tied with mandatory minimums and three-strikes laws, as well as the above-referenced contractual requirements to keep prisons filled. No nation has ever locked up such a large percentage of its population. According to my research, not the Soviet Union, not Nazi Germany, not even any of the horrendous tyrannies in existence today has such a large ratio of prisoners to population. Granted, there are a few people who need to be kept out of general circulation; however, most prisoners are locked up for minor, non-violent charges, such as petty theft or possessing a teeny amount of marijuana. On top of that, a disproportionate number of minority and economically disadvantaged people are behind bars.

Inmates often serve as cheap labor for manufacturers – perhaps because those companies want to brag their products are “made in the USA” but are too miserly to pay decent wages or benefits. Families are torn apart and children are stigmatized just so some CEO can count his gold coins. The mouthpieces of the prison industry say that the detainees are learning useful skills to prepare them for when they are released, but these menial tasks are not likely to translate into meaningful employment later, especially when a prison record can be an insurmountable barrier to even the most menial work.

As if all that isn’t enough, many prisoners frequently receive food that is inadequately nutritious, even spoiled. The contractors do everything they can to slash costs per meal so the correction company’s shareholders can wallow in greenbacks. Medical care for prisoners is also shoddy. Considering that most prisoners come from the ranks of the poor, and are incarcerated for minor charges, this makes their treatment all the more reprehensible. The shills of the prison system gladly parrot the old saw “It’s prison, dammit, not a country club!” and harp on those inmates who do belong behind bars, oblivious to the sorry reality of this disaster.

Bail bond companies have license to use all manner of dirty tricks to squeeze every dollar they can out of the pockets of defendants. Getting extra bonds from people who are re-arrested while out on bond, taking fees from defendants and then returning them to custody without explanation – all that is legal. And it’s all in the name of filthy lucre. The bondsman gets the gold mine, while the suspect – who could be innocent – gets the shaft.

Finally, many court systems have handed over the collection of fines to private probation companies, who pick on those least able to pay. Instead of having the opportunity to work out a way to pay off a traffic ticket or the like, the poorest are hit with “supervision fees” that increase the burden and make it less and less likely that the penalty will be fully paid. Those who can’t pony up get locked up. One Georgia man’s $200 fine for nicking a case of beer ultimately mushroomed into thousands of dollars in penalties, far beyond his ability to pay. Yes, he shouldn’t have stolen the beer in the first place; but how can it be at all fair or just when a company can keep adding heinously high “fees” to make sure that a penalty is out of someone’s financial reach?

Yep, my favorite time of year is once again upon us.  And by now I suspect you are all close to being experts on the science of the panorama produced by ending photosynthesis.  (Like that’s going to stop me.)

After a new leaf is fully formed, the tree will spend its energy on preparing for the next year’s leaf buds.  They rely on the leaves already in place to create and store food as carbohydrates/sugars for the energy needed for that new leaf bud.  Trees are unique in that they’re able to manufacture their own food/energy, courtesy of photosynthesis.

We all know the green pigmented chemical in leaves as Chlorophyll.  It utilizes the energy courtesy of the sun during the process of photosynthesis to convert water (from the roots) and carbon dioxide (from the air) into sugars and starches while giving off oxygen as a by-product.

Of course the green from chlorophyll is not the only color pigment that’s always present in leaves.  Equally important are the carotenoids (carotene and xanthophyll).  These pigments are used in capturing light energy needed in the process of photosynthesis.  It’s just that the carotenoids are masked by the green of the chlorophyll during the summer months.

Once there’s the nip of autumn in the air, as daylight hours shorten and temperatures drop, cells near the juncture of the leaf and its stem start to divide very rapidly.  This creates the corky abscission layer where the leaf will eventually break from the tree and flutter to the ground.  And then that corky layer serves to protect the branch through winter.

The rapid growth of the abscission layer physically blocks transport of nutrients needed by the leaf to manufacture the carbohydrates.  Consequently the photosynthesis that’s been creating chlorophyll ends.

And once the chlorophyll is gone, the carotene and xanthophyll chemical pigments that have been present all summer long now take center stage.

These carotenoids (carotene and xanthophyll) give their characteristic orange and yellow colors to not just leaves, but also to carrots, corn, canaries, and daffodils – as well as egg yolks, rutabagas, buttercups, and bananas.

When it comes to the forest, they provide the predominant color for about 15-30% of our tree species.  They’re most commonly found in the hardwood species of hickories, ash, maple, yellow poplar, aspen, birch, black cherry, sycamore, cottonwood, sassafras, and alder.

But there’s a third class of chemicals that leaves have (after chlorophyll and the carotenoids) that produce the reds and purples of anthocyanin.  Oddly enough, unlike the other two classes, anthocyanin has not been present in the leaves during the entire summer, but are created brand new – just for autumn’s fall foliage!

It’s a mystery why a tree would expend extra energy when it’s shutting down for the winter to use stored energy to create a new product.

We do know the brighter the sunlight during this period, the greater the production of anthocyanins – and the more brilliant the resulting reds and purples.  This direct proportion of redness to sunlight exposure explains why the periphery of hardwood trees are bright red, while the foliage lower down and inside are the more typical oranges and yellows.

Anthocyanins also account for the coloring of cranberries, red apples, blueberries, cherries, strawberries, and plums.  They are present in only about 10% of hardwood species – mainly maples, sourwood, sweetgums, dogwoods, tupelos, cherry trees and persimmons.

But in a few lucky areas — most famously New England — up to 70% of tree species are the type that produce the anthocyanin pigment.  That high concentration of anthocyanin accounts for the intense (but relatively brief) autumnal color display in New England.

So while other areas that enjoy a mix of tree varieties the colors may not be as intense, but the season lasts longer.

And this year, rather than individual photos of fall I’ve found a wonderful aerial video to share featuring foliage of New England:

Yesterday, I learned my friend James, who has already been through so much, was in the process f having surgery on his ankle (which had prior surgery, but the screws from that were loosening and coming out.) That, according to his surgeon, usually means an infection, but he wanted to get in and look at it before mronouncing. Sure enough, the pathology lab found one, and he now needs to be on IV antibiotics for 6 weeks before the reconstructive surgery can happen (because otherwise he would lose the leg. Where have we heard this before.) Prayers and good thoughts are invited. (And I also got the email that my ballot has been counted. Yay!)

Wonkette – Another Criminal Investigation Into The Trump Organization? Sure Why Not!
Quote – In recent months, the district attorney’s office in suburban Westchester County, N.Y., has subpoenaed records from […] Trump National Golf Club Westchester, and the town of Ossining, which sets property taxes on the course, a sprawling private club that is perched on a hill north of New York City and boasts a 101-foot waterfall. The full scope of the investigation could not be determined, but the district attorney, Mimi E. Rocah, appears to be focused at least in part on whether Mr. Trump’s company, the Trump Organization, misled local officials about the property’s value to reduce its taxes, one of the people said.

The New Yorker – Borowitz Report – America’s Children Demand That Joe Manchin’s Salary Be Tied to Work Requirement
Quote – Declaring “no more government handouts,” millions of America’s children are demanding that all future salary payments to Senator Joe Manchin be tied to a work requirement. Tracy Klugian, who is nine years old, said that Manchin’s current arrangement, in which he is paid for no work whatsoever, amounts to “an obscene ripoff of the American taxpayer.”

Yesterday, I received an email that my ballot has been received by the County Clerk’s office. I’ll get another email to confirm it’s been (or will be) counted, but I trust the clerk’s office, so I’m relieved. Full disclosure: As a veteran, I receive lots of free return address labels from veterans’ organizations, and most have patriotic imagery. I don’t use those that much, but I always make sure when I mail my ballot that it has a return address label with a big ol’ flag. I figure any GQP along the way who might be tempted not to deliver it will not be tempted when there’s a big ol’ flag on it. That may be paranoid … but these days …

CBS News – Manslaughter conviction of 21-year-old Oklahoma woman who suffered miscarriage sparks outcry
Quote – [W]hile Poolaw’s case has garnered national attention, [National Advocates for Pregnant Women] says that her case is not unusual. The organization says it has documented over 1,600 cases involving the criminalization of pregnancy. More than 1,200 of those cases occurred in the past 15 years. “These cases include pregnant women who have been arrested for falling down stairs, drinking alchol, giving birth at home, being in a ‘dangerous’ location, having HIV, experiencing a drug dependency problem, or attempting suicide,” the organization tweeted. “The majority of women subjected to pregnancy-based prosecutions are low-income women, drug-using women, and women of color.”

Pro Publica – Oath Keepers in the State House: How a Militia Movement Took Root in the Republican Mainstream
Quote – Dozens of Oath Keepers have been arrested in connection to the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol, some of them looking like a paramilitary group, wearing camo helmets and flak vests. But a list of more than 35,000 members of the Oath Keepers — obtained by an anonymous hacker and shared with ProPublica by the whistleblower group Distributed Denial of Secrets — underscores how the organization is evolving into a force within the Republican Party. ProPublica identified Clampitt and 47 more state and local government officials on the list, all Republicans: 10 sitting state lawmakers; two former state representatives; one current state assembly candidate; a state legislative aide; a city council assistant; county commissioners in Indiana, Arizona and North Carolina; two town aldermen; sheriffs or constables in Montana, Texas and Kentucky; state investigators in Texas and Louisiana; and a New Jersey town’s public works director.

Quote – And it’s exactly these big moments—when Sanders and like-minded Democrats express their endless frustration with Manchin—that help him burnish the gadfly credentials needed for a Democrat to survive in a state that went for Donald Trump in 2020 by 38 points. So, despite visits from angry kayakers, millions of dollars spent on ad campaigns pressuring him, thousands of calls to his office, and countless meetings with various constituents, Manchin has so far not budged a dollar on the Democrats’ signature legislation.
