Yesterday also quiet. Not that I got a whole lot done. I was trying to rest, and more or less did.

Short Takes

Daily Kos (David Neiwert) – Right-wing so-called ‘journalists’ exploit Waukesha tragedy, drawing neo-Nazis there to protest
Quote – Ngo also disingenuously proffered as evidence a post by Brooks he described as “about how to get away with running people over on the street”—even though the post in question was actually written by an ex-Minneapolis police officer who encouraged drivers to run down BLM protesters, and Brooks had posted it as evidence of violent police attitudes. Of course, there is still zero evidence that Brooks ever participated in any BLM march or engaged in any protest organizing.
Click through for details. I am honestly more sick of fake journalists than I am of fake news itself. And don’t think there aren’t any on the left. We have to be responsible for moderating our confirmation bias … because RWNJs certainly will not moderate theirs.

The Nib – Why Are Everyone’s Catalytic Converters Being Stolen?
Quote – But catalytic converters have been round for nearly 50 years. So why is this happening now? The economic downturn caused by the pandemic might be one factor. Another is the soaring price of the precious metals that put the catalyst in catalytic.
Click through. Yes, this is what you might call a “graphic article.” But try to find a non-graphic one which lays out this information so clearly.

The 19th Explains: Women may soon qualify for the draft. Here’s what you need to know.
Quote – Kara Dixon Vuic, who studies gender and the U.S. military at Texas Christian University, said the passage of this amendment would be “huge, though largely symbolic” when it comes to the fight for women’s rights and gender equity in the military. “Right now, the only legal difference between what men and women do as civilians is men sign up for selective service,” said Vuic, who is currently writing a book on the history of military draft eligibility in the country. “It’s not that women don’t have to; it’s that they can’t.”
Click through for the scoop. I have always felt that if one really wants to be treated equally, then one must accept being treated equally. As obvious as that soounds, it seems to be a difficult concept when it comes to feminism. Perhaps that at least partially explains why misogyny is more powerful than racism (as the 2016 election proved.)

  1. Cartoon: Good news!
    DK: Sickening and horrible behavior…unreal.
The Nib: Good graphic, and information on this subject. Thx!
19thnews: Good article, though no guarantees on the amendment… unfortunately. Imho, it’s an ‘All Hands on Deck’ subject, and a positive for women. imho. Your last sentence pretty well sums it up too. Back in my day, women were not allowed in combat. However, my daughter…volunteered, she is a USN Veteran, served on two aircraft carriers, and saw war.
    FFT: Yep. Pretty much!

THIS JUST IN: “Texas doesn’t have a hot line if you see a man go into a Kindergartner class with an AR-15, but it does have a hot line if you wee a woman go into a Planned Parenthood parking lot with her car. ~@BettyBowers ~  H/T JD

    • TJI #4 – Agreed.  Sue them into bankruptcy!  And it’s one of the reasons I’m really glad that the Ethan Crumbley’s parents are being charged in Michigan.
(Probably been covered, but Jennifer Crumbley is a big Trumpkin fan:

    • TJI #1   ‘See’, not wee.
      Sorry about that.

    • TJI #1 – Trust Mrs. Berry Bowers.
TJI #2 – Oldest known. Ah, if we only knew. Bit alas, there are some people who wouldn’t be humbled by anything. Many happy returns of the day to Jonathan!
TJI #3 – Yes, I deliberately bypassed that in the cartoon because I figured that we all know it and aren’t likely to forget.
TJI #3 – I would have thought the thread holding the entire corrupt death machine together was crazy people with guns. But he’s right, the act is a terrible one and should be repealed. Incidentally, in case anyone doesn’t remember, he know a thing or fifty about guns himself.
TJI #5. Beto is more charitable than I. I would also point out that he’s on the wrong side of the bet. He wants people to die.

  2. Right-wing so-called ‘journalists’ exploit Waukesha tragedy
Jared Holt’s Tweet has a good group picture of a bunch of incels.
Women may soon qualify for the draft.
Boy, did that bring back memories of the 1969 Draft Lottery drawing.  I was #269.

  3. Comment from Mitch –

‘Toon: Constitution?  What Constitution?DK: The agenda driven scum on the right will let no opportunity to gaslight be missed!  Yes, everybody has confirmation bias, but these folks
    love to stir up violence.
Nib: Can’t quite see it, but did not know this was a thing.
19th: Interesting, and yes, equality means just that, though it does go against the grain a bit.   And, then there is the issue of sexual assault in the military.
    FFT: Good one.
    Mitch

  4. Hi everybody!

We have finished with the atmospheric rivers for now and woke up to snow on Monday morning.  I was a little concerned because my surgeon’s office is in a hilly part of town and I had an appointment with him early in the morning.  We are likely to have more snow Sunday.  Lona wrote in an email that “We had 419 mm (16.5 in) of rain in November, …”.  To give you an idea, during the atmospheric river (I can’t remember if it was the 1st one or the 3rd), we had north of 650 mm (25 inches) of rain and to say it was devastating is an understatement.  That is for about 1 week.  Also about 1.6 million animals were killed and 5 people were killed.

My arm is getting better but is still a problem.  I start my physio tomorrow and I was told to lose the brace.  X-rays showed that the bones are aligned properly.  I still can’t bend my wrist, open a pop bottle, turn a door knob very well (sometimes not at all), nor take out the garbage but I am making progress.  I do still have a lot of swelling which is partly why the wrist won’t bend.

Well that’s it from north of the 49th for now.  Take care and stay safe.

    • Hi Lynn.
Glad to hear that your arm is improving some. I understand 100% about how slow the healing process is.  Hopefully the physical therapy will help speed up the recovery and ease some of the pain. You will remain in my daily prayers.
Wow…Talk about wild weather in your country. That’s a lot of rain and now you have snow.
We haven’t had rain here in San Diego for months. We’re way behind making our drought condition even worse than it already was. I wish Mother Nature would balance out some when it comes to these heavy rainstorms throughout the World.
Take care and you keep safe too.

      • Mother Nature used to do a lot more balancing before we started messing with her.  I wouldn’t blame the inconsistencies on her but on us.  And some of it we really can’t not do – which allthe more reason we should wuit as possible doing wjhat we don’t absolutelt need .

  5. Cartoon: Important event. too bad some people don’t feel the same about it now.
DK: Despicable creeps. Agree with your comment Joanne about sick of fake journalists than I am of fake news itself. Wish they all would disappear from our Earth.
The Nib: Great article. I too like the graphic details that’s displayed. They’ve been speaking about the catalytic converters being stolen here in San Diego on our local news for days. I didn’t realize that it was throughout the country,
19th: Women have been fighting saying they want to be treated equally. I guess they’ll have to except this issue too. You and Pat both served in the military, and I thank your both for that. Do you think they’ll ever get back to having a real draft again? It’s been a long time since it ended.
Food for Thought: That’s what’s happening now, they can’t get, or find workers.
I have been having Wifi issues today. What was it that Nameless was mentioning he was going to buy to help take care of his iWifi issues? I have Spectrum Cable which provides me a routed modem. In certain rooms my laptop doesn’t have a strong Wifi signals on some days when it’s overcast or windy, like today, which makes it very annoying.
Hope you had a nice day.
    Take care. Thanks Joanne

    • I had to look his coment up, and found it here.  He called it s “mesh router” and added this quote:

Mesh routers help eliminate dead zones. Rather than broadcasting Wi-Fi signals from a single point, mesh router systems have multiple access points. One point links to the modem and acts as the router, while one or more other access points, often called satellites, capture the router’s signal and rebroadcast it.

I’m not familiar with is (I actually drilled holes in walls – hidden, sure, but still – to be able to use shorter (and less trippable-over) to connect every computer I use on the ‘net.  (I have kept a coule of older ones to use just for games which are downloaded so I don’t need internet for them – once they’re downloaded, they are there.)

      • Thanks for looking up Nameless’ comment about the Mesh router. Will have to try and figure out if it would help me here on these days my network Wifi signal is weak. Even today it’s fading in and out.
        Thanks again, joanne

  6. thanks, food for thought is very thought-provoking.
