Yesterday, the opera was Pelleas et Melisande by Debussy. The libretto is symbolists, so Debussy was a good choice to complse it. I decided to make one last stab for this year at a cotton knitting project, and started on it. I may end up postponing finishing it until next year, but I hope I can finish the fron panel at least, which is based on the idea of a “Log Cabin” quilt block. The back, collar, cuffs, and hem are plain.

The Hill – Executive privilege fight poses hurdles for Trump
Quote – “For example a former president’s privilege claim is deemed much stronger if the current president supports it,” she added. “We’ve never been in a situation where there was a prior claim that was not supported by the incumbent, because presidents, when it comes to their turn to be the former president, they want to be able to do that same thing.”
Click through. To be pellucidly clear, he can claim executive privilege for any douments prio to noon on Jan. 20 But it isn’t a matter of claim and have. Some things are not subject to executive privilege. Like crimes. Someone other than he must look at the documents and determine whether they are subject to executive privilege or not (and most, if not all, won’t be.) And, of course, for anything after noon January 20, executive privilege cannot even be claimed. And President Biden has publicly stated he will not claim or support executive privilege for Trump**. Snicker.

Reuters – Germans vote in close election to decide Merkel successor
Quote – After a domestic-focused election campaign, Berlin’s allies in Europe and beyond may have to wait for months before they can see whether the new German government is ready to engage on foreign issues to the extent they would like. The splintered political landscape means a three-way coalition is likely. Final opinion polls gave the Social Democrats a narrow lead, but the conservatives have reduced the gap in recent days and many voters were still undecided.
Click through for details. We knew she was retiring – and now it’s here. She helped us survive Trump** as much as anyone outside could. I wish her the best in her retirement, as well as a worthy successor.

AP News – Mystery solved: Biden gets proof of family ties to India
Quote – “And although we never admitted it … I’ve found out that there was a Capt. George Biden who was a captain in the East India Tea Company in India,” Biden said. He appeared to be referring to the British East India Company, a commercial power for centuries that controlled trade in colonized India and parts of southeast Asia. Biden, who frequently talks of his Irish ancestry, quipped that the British connection was “hard for an Irishman to admit.” Biden, who has told versions of the anecdote to Indian audiences before, said Capt. Biden “apparently stayed and married an Indian woman” but he’d never been able to nail down further details.

    Cartoon: Gut wrenching!
The Hill: Finally! Good news! So glad to see the ball rolling ico re: TOT.
Reuters: I really like her. I wish her a good, relaxing and healthy retirement. She deserves it.
AP: How cool is this? Pretty cool !!!
FFT: Word. One can learn much/many life lessons in Kinder.

This just in: TJI  Overheard: “Celebrities who regularly inject fillers in various parts of their bodies shouldn’t make a big deal about what’s in a vaccine.” ~ George Takei ~
    2. “I take responsibility. I’m president. … It was horrible to see. To see people treated like they did, horses nearly running them over, people being strapped. It’s outrageous. I promise you those people will pay. … There will be consequences.” ~ President Biden on Haitian migrants ~
    3. “We thank the Senate for confirming Ambassador Daniel Kritenbrink as Assistant Secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs. He will be a great leader for @USAsiaPacific at the StateDept and I look forward to working closely with him as we engage with the region.” ~ Wendy R. Sherman @DepSecState ~
    4. “Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is scheduled to sign into law today (9/24), a bill that bars access to abortion-inducing pills for patients who are more than seven weeks pregnant.” ~ Texas Tribune ~
    5. “If people can’t go to work because they can’t get child care, and small businesses have to shut down because they can’t find the employees they need, all of a sudden we’re in a downward spiral. Wecan’t build a 21st-century economy without quality, affordable child care.” ~ Elizabeth Warren ~

    • TJI #1 – Oh my! That should sting (but, alas, probably won’t. Stultitia omnia vincit.)
TJI #2 – Anyone with a brain and a smidgen of empathy should have, and would have, known this would be his reaction. And, yes, because he is the President, he is rsponsible. But I can’t find it in me to blame him personally for the sadistic actions of people he never hired, but inherited from a sadistic authoritarian administration
TJI #3 – About damn time. Far too few have been confirmed.
TJI #4 – Aside from its depicability, this bill is ridiculous. For pills you get an extra week? Really?
TJI #5 – That and our national credit will be ruined.

  2. The Hill: Good to know. tRump doesn’t deserve any type of privileges.
Reuters: She’s been a great leader. I too wish her the best with her retirement. Hopefully they’ll bring in a leader who’s for the people.
AP: Wow, awesome news. What an amazing thing to find out.
Food for Thought: What we learn in our younger years.
Nice that you were able to enjoy the Opera yesterday. Good luck with your knitting project.
    Hope you’re day was decent.
It was cool and cloudy here.
    Take care. Thanks Joanne

    .

  3. TJI#1: So true. Who knows what those fillers have in them.
TJI#2: I have to agree with Joanne wrote. The idiot before him, use to cage them…remember?
    TJI#3: Glad to hear it.
    TJI#4: Despicable. Women have rights.
TJI#5: True statement. It’s definitely something they’d better pass.

  4. Thanks Joanne–the cartoon epitomizes the foreign policies I see emerging from this administration, too.
Glad the law is so clear on the limited rights of an ex Pres related to archives and most rights to current POTUS.
I wonder if the German polls do any better than ours these days in predicting elections…have read summaries but am waiting for today’s results to dig deeper.
That company Biden claims owes an awful lot of slaves and Indigenous people reparations along with apologies.
Patrick was so much wiser at that tender age that so many adults are today.

  5. Lately, I’m so late for the posts after I’ve been too busy during the day that you’re about to post new articles. That makes commenting frivolous. I thought I’d caught up yesterday morning (Sunday morning here) but I apparently read and commented on your Friday postings instead of Saturday’s (my Sunday). Commenting is getting to be more and more a waste of time, I’m afraid.

Cartoon: I don’t think the Khmer Rouge bought many guns from anyone – they killed in more traditional horrid ways – but Republicans condoned it anyway.

TH: TFG claiming executive privilege for anything is an audacity.

Reuters: Angela Merkel will have to delay her retirement until a new government is formed, and the German governments are always a coalition, so it may take months before she can enjoy a well-deserved retirement. She’ll be sorely missed.

    FFT: Beter late than never.

    • I am so behind myself that I’ve given up on trying to post breaking news – and just look for things that are interesting and maybe overlooked.  But your comments are always read … and so solid I seldom have anything to add  And tyhat is never a waste of my time, and I would hate for you to feel it was a waste of yours.  I realize fire prevention/protection comes first of course.
