I’m having my 80-foot tall hickory tree taken down today, so I’ll be “supervising”.
While it’s still healthy, it largely overhangs the roof and is starting to drop branches. Plus I’m tired of dealing with all the hickory nuts. They’re the reason that part of the lawn has turned to weeds.
But Nike will miss watching & chatting to all his squirrel friends!

Sad, but, I guess, necessary.
Eighty feet tall! That is a crying shame, although as Mitch says, necessary. Is it possible to plant another tree, maybe not exactly there, but somewhere Nike can see it? A tree that doesn’t drop acidulous nuts? And were it me, I would be wanting to get at least one piece of furniture made from it – probably more – 80 is a lot of feet, though I don’t suppose it would all be usable. But maybe one piece could be a cat tree.

With the branches falling onto the roof, are they the size you’d have to worry about it damaging to the roof?
I had a Pine tree in my front yard when I first moved here in the late Nineties. When we were going thru years of having a drought, the water company started limiting how much and when we could water. So I had it removed, including my lawn to have pavers put in. I remember the guys who were putting in the pavers, saying the Pine tree roots were getting close to the base of my home, which would of caused some major issues, if I didn’t have it removed.

80-ft tall? That Hickory tree must have been there for a long time and taking it down must feel a bit like saying goodbye to an old acquaintance. Not so much an old friend, I suppose, with the dropping of branches on roofs and nuts onto the lawn.
You and Nike may come to miss its shade though, Nameless, with climate change pushing up the temperatures. Or isn’t that part of the new reality yet where you live?

Thanks Nameless–I empathize as I watch PG&E get rid of what is approaching 100 of the 100 yr.+ old oaks that used to provide windbreak to my neighborhood, including a full circle that once kept me from seeing any of man’s infrastructure in views most directions…yet not the getting sicker from the varied fungi of the one on my neighbor’s property overhanging my house and dropping increasing sized limbs and twigs year around. One hit me in the back of my head once and was just glad I wasn’t facing the other direction so human risks, too. Sad to see old warriors go nonetheless.
sad, but I guess better than coming down on your home…..we had one fall into our neighbor’s yard and they had one fall on ours (good thing for insurance)….so now we’ve replanted shorter, lighter trees…..good luck
