From NY Times (Hat-Tip Lona): The Trump administration early Wednesday morning executed Lisa M. Montgomery, the only woman on federal death row, whose death marked the first federal execution of a woman in nearly 70 years.
Ms. Montgomery, 52, was sentenced to death for murdering a pregnant woman in 2004 and abducting the unborn child, whom she claimed as her own. In pleas to spare her life, Ms. Montgomery’s supporters argued that a history of trauma and sexual abuse that marred her life contributed to the circumstances that led to the crime. Her case, unusual in part because so few women are sentenced to death, ignited debate over the role of offenders’ past trauma in criminal sentencing.
Despite a series of court orders that briefly blocked her execution, she was pronounced dead at 1:31 a.m. at the federal prison complex in Terre Haute, Ind., the Bureau of Prisons said in a statement. Her death, by lethal injection, is the 11th execution since the Trump administration resumed use of federal capital punishment in July after a 17-year hiatus.

NYT – He can’t even argue for capital punishment without inciting violence (there are rational arguments for it – not, IMO, persuasive, but rational). He just gets a thrill from killing.

Take all the rest you need, TomCat, you need all your energy for your hospital day, Friday. Perhaps you’ll rest a little easier now the House has impeached Trump with 10 Republicans joining in. But it’ll come to nothing as McConnell already vowed it won’t come before the Senate until after the inauguration.

NYT: Lisa Montgomery had an absolutely horrid life of abuse which has damaged her brain to an extent that it was visible on scans. She should never have been on death row to start with. The executions of 11 people with 2 more waiting, after a 17-year hiatus, show how cruel Trump, and the Republican SCOTUS which finalized them all, really is and how he loves to show how powerful he is. I think it gave him a kick to sign the lives of 13 people away.
BTW, there are still two men awaiting execution; theirs were delayed because both tested positive for COVID-19. It is unclear what is going to happen to them.
Impeachment: 232 v 197 voted for the second impeachment of Trump, including 10 Republicans. Yes, it is posturing, because nothing will come of it, but it had to be done. ACCOUNTABILITY FIRST.
MSNBC: Rachel may wonder what Trump thought would happen if the attack on the Capitol had been successful but I think it was very little, as usual. He’s completely incapable of planning or thinking ahead, and fortunately so is the mob he inspires.
