DNC Report: Day One

I have to admit, I was worried about how Democrats would handle the new format for the Democratic National Convention.  It was necessitated by the Republican plague, Trump* virus.  They did quite well, and I was particularly impressed with Bernie’s speech.  Nevertheless, I felt sorry for Bernie.  He spoke before Michelle Obama, and Michelle not only rocked the house, she rocked the nation!

Democrats kicked off their virtual nominating convention Monday with a focused denunciation of President Trump, showcasing dozens of testimonials that culminated in lancing criticism from former first lady Michelle Obama, who cast Trump as incapable of meeting America’s needs and said Joe Biden would usher in racial justice and ease the coronavirus pandemic.

In the centerpiece speech of the night, a searing indictment of her husband Barack Obama’s successor, Obama declared that Trump has mishandled the pandemic and failed to respond to outcries over the deaths of Black Americans. She warned that the nation would suffer more if he is elected to a second term.

“Let me be as honest and clear as I possibly can: Donald Trump is the wrong president for our country. He has had more than enough time to prove that he can do the job, but he is clearly in over his head. He cannot meet this moment. He simply cannot be who we need him to be for us,” she said, before quoting a line Trump used about covid-19 [sic] deaths in a recent interview: “It is what it is.”… [emphasis added]

  1. I’ll have to review the first part of the convention, but I did watch the full video of Ms. Obama’s, John Kasich’s, and Amy Klobuchar’s words of encouragement, and how our future needs to change, after dt’s daily trainwrecks of lies, and abuses.

Yes, I did get choked up with Ms. Obama’s words. They were truthful, thoughtful, and so eloquent. I also enjoyed  Rachel’s, Nicole’s, and Joy’s session and takes, afterwards too. Such delightful women!

    How I miss the Obama’s.
    Thanks, Tom posting.

  2. I certainly don’t think Bernie would have been any better off speaking after Michelle.  Speaking before, at least he was heard.  After the way she knocked it out of the park, I cn’t be certain that anything which came after her was heard at all.

I think it’s fitting that the most powerful speaker on the first night holds no office and is not running for any office.  It’s a reminder that those who do hold office work for those of us who don’t.  And that’s a necessary reminder, being, as it is in the current regime, more honored in the breach than the observance.

I will have to watch it gradually.

  3. Michelle certainly did hit a home run!
I was very surprised to see Christine Todd Whitman, who told the 9/11 responders that it was just fine to breathe that poisonous air, showing up for a Dem!
The young lady whose father died of Covid was impressive.
Now, the’ve go to get that former “Disgruntled employee” on the air!

  4. I watched the full coverage of the convention. Was very pleased with the speakers.
I applaud Michelle Obama with her outstanding speech. She spoke to everyone in ways that I feel will motivate the ones that may have second thoughts about voting, to get out there and do it.
She’s pointed out every evil doing that the current so-called leader has done since he stepped into the W.H, Plus all that he has ignored regarding the Covid-19 pandemic, the recent killings, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Black Lives Matter protesters. Like she mentioned, he’s not a good fit for the type of leader our country needs, especially now.
I enjoyed watching Bernie, Amy Klobuchar Gretchen and John Kasich.
    Looking forward to tonight’s lineup.

  5. If you go to the actual YouTube site you’ll note the Russian Bot Trolls have overrun the place.

Here’s a impromptu view of Melania watching Michelle’s stellar speech last night:

As one late night comic noted: If you missed Michelle’s speech last night – don’t worry.  Melania will be performing it again next week.
