The monologue was not available this week. Here are three clips which were available.

Kerry Washington – I’m not sure whether liberals are concerned with not being offended. Not being killed is more like it. That’s not directed at the ACLU, but at Bill’s take on it. I think Kerry gets it. If George Bush’s attending John Lewis’s funeral can reach even one bigoted Republican, God bless it.

Jim Carrey – The name of the book is “Memoirs and Misinformation” – in case Jim never lets Bill say it.

New Rule – Bollocks. If body size were as simple as Bill wants to make it, there would be no body size problem.  It isn’t.

  1. W/watch this evening.
Thank you for getting this out here, Joanne.

  2. The first thing I thought when I came to this page and saw Bill’s pictures on the video stills was: “Bill has lost some weight”. After viewing the New Rule video, I knew I was right.

I’m sure losing a few pounds was no fun, but Bill was only mildly obese at worst and doesn’t seem to be bothered by the many factors that contribute to obesity except getting older and burning fewer calories because of it. Even when complaining about having so much less money, he’s still very affluent and can afford the best and healthiest foods, including a dietician to help him shed those few pounds.

Telling the 42% of Americans who are obese to lose weight and survive the virus is very short-sighted and shows little understanding of the problem obese people struggle with. And if it entices people to go on crash diets to lose some of their substantial overweight fast, I think he may have made matters worse for them as that could  undermine their ability to fight the virus when on that crash diet.

    • “getting older and burning fewer calories” yes.  And all medically approved diet (and exercise) advice boils down to having people burn more calories – and/or relocate those calories into muscle.  It would be nice if life worked that way.  But not all weight, or even all “excess” weight, is fat.

In my youth, bone mass and density used to be taken into consideration in some charts – but now that it’s all BMI, that is no longer considered.  In any case, that was never an issue of mine, so I don’t know that much about it.  But I do know that water (edema) and tissue (non-malignant tumors, like fibroids and endometriomas, but also some that are not gender-specific) can be parts of one’s weight that counting calories will never address.

I could go on, but I think my point has been made – if you don’t know what your weight consists of, you are not going to be able to change it effectively.  And if someone giving you advice doesn’t know what your weight consist of, that advice it likely to be ineffective also.

  3. Thanks for doing this, JD.  I hope I get time to watch them. 26
