It’s a lazy day here in the CatBox.  There is not much news that we have not already covered, so this is my only article today.  Portland is entering an excessive heat waning with several days over 90° and Sunday and Monday over 100°.  Tomorrow please expect no more than a Personal Update or an Open Thread.  Tomorrow WWWendy will be here to destink the sweaty TomCat, help with chores, and mega-goop.  Have a great weekend.

  1. Greetings to WWWendy – hope all goes smoothly and as pain-free as possible.

    Don Winslow

Lincoln Project (I don’t like to activate CC when it’s already there, but in this case it’s incomplete)

Will humans ever learn to be as intelligent as geese?

    Cartoon – Every. Last. One.

    Map – This.

MSNBC – Yes, I’ve been seeing this around the web. What is going to happen is that Republican officials will open schools and human officials will not. Since many areas have a mix od Repubicans and himans, there will be considerable infighting. Kids woill die, as will their families, and co-workers of their families,m and families of co-workers …

Mark and Trae – I think not just because she tells the truth – in addition to that she is a woman, and brown, and educated, and strong, and confident. And doesn’t just shut up because they want her to.

    Past – AMEN!

    • Winslow and the LP rock, once again.
Geese have evolved, humans are in the process of devolving, and it’s too bad that when the planet says “Hey, I’ve had enough of you clowns,” it will also spell demise for the geese!

      • I fear so too, but we may be wrong.  Look at how rapidly – just five months – wildlie ar expanding habitat when the humans are only in quarantine.  I thnk there may be hope for the geese yet.

  2. My county had its first death last Saturday and manages to remain off the state’s watch list, in part, due to testing less than targets most of the time (finally reached target a couple days ago) and because my local hospital transfers most ICU level patients to another county’s hospital (where they get counted in the data system there) because they do not have the resources for treating them.
In this conservative county at least one elementary/middle school district opted to fully open a month ago and the County Office of Education, which operates a school serving younger than high school special education students with IEP’s without any mainstreaming requirements is preparing to be fully open.
Watchlist counties cannot open schools for in-person, yet may submit requests for waivers for elementary schools (haven’t seen what will dictate whether or not the waiver is granted).  One model from the spring looks pretty good to me:

  3. Cartoon: What you said, just GO! Far, far, far away….
    TVU: Not good.  Confirmed – 1142, Active – 510. Recovered -588. Deaths – 12
MSNBC: Rachel is so good at what she speaks of. Watched this this morning, and I agree. No opening schools, especially here in Tx. This is reprehensible to follow through on this notion. imho.
TCC: Good video.  I admire her tenacity, she has showed that she’s got this. AOC holds her head high and has the experience to tell people off with nice language. She certainly got her point across graciously on the House floor. KUDOS to AOC !
YT: Loved his words and songs.

Hope that you get a chance to rest and get in a nap. Take good care, and Thanks, Tom.
p.s. We went from a Burn Ban yesterday to today of getting remnants of Hurricane Hanna this morning. PTL !

This just in: “Susan Collins likes to take credit for the Paycheck Protection Program. What she doesn’t tell you is that big corporate chains scarfed up the taxpayer money before most of the small businesses in Collin’s home state of Maine had a chance to access the funds.” ~ Stephen King, author ~
    2. “Here’s something pretty cool: In one week, Mary Trump’s book, ‘Too Much and Never Enough’, sold more hard copies than ‘The Art of the Deal’ has in 33 years since it was published.” ~ Tony Schwartz ~
    3. “China was negligent containing Covid. But what does it say about the Trump Administration that it saw China’s failures, Europe’s struggles, NE ravaged, and all the while no coherent policy? That the definition of negligence. Please….spare me the scapegoating! ~ Dan Rather ~
    4. Shout out!! to @King James for paying fines and fees with his voting rights organization so Floridians who have felon records can vote.” ~ Jim S. ~
    5. “Let me just say that this president has been the biggest failure practically in the history of our Country.” ~ Nancy Pelosi ~

    • TJI: I love them…especially King James’ move to work around what goes for normal in Florida voter suppression.

      • Like you, I was delightedly impressed by King James.  But also angered that the state made it necessary for these IMO illegal poll taxes to be required.

    • Like them all.
      TJ5; Agree with Nancy’s comment 100%.

  4. ‘Toon: In the trash!
TVU: Hey, what’s going on?  Florida is being outshone!
    MSNBC: Of course!
Trey: She tells the truth, and…her “New Green Deal” scares the hell out of this who are allergic to change, innovation; who benefit from supporting the status quo.  The status quo, of course is the problem, in so many ways, including enabling and encouraging assholes like Yoho!
Sam Cooke: Just beautiful, in so many ways!

  5. Cartoon:  To keep out country sane…. it sounds like a goal we need to accomplish this November.
TVU: Still climbing at a rapid rate. Scary.
MSNBC: Rachel is spot on. There’s no way that schools can safely open with the cases rising so quickly.
Trey: Good video. AOC speaks truth, something that the R’s can’t and won’t take.
BFTP: Great tune. Remember Sam Cook from my earlier years.
Hope you continue to keep feeling better. Keep cool the best you can with the heat.
Tomorrow tell Wendy, “Hi” and I hope you both get your chores done.
    Take care. Thanks TomCat

  6. I always get a kick seeing that pic of Paul Ryan & GOP interns.  It’s the Repubican variant of “Find Waldo”: Find A Person of Color.

I do think there might be one: a male in the third row directly behind Ryan’s right shoulder. What do you think? Any others?

  7. When Care2 was active I often ended my comments with “A storm is coming.” That storm is here, and it is building. And building, and building, and building.

The COVID-19 has really laid bare many of the serious problems not just the USA but all human civilization has. Yes, a change is gonna come, and though the results will be positive, things are gonna get really ugly while that change is underway.

  8. Tom I think of you every time I see the news about Portland!  Please don’t get any bright ideas about protesting, OK?  Poor WWWWendy would have a terrible time getting the tear gas off you!  Take care, TC!

  9. Last night, Peter Green, founding guitarist of Fleetwood Mac, died peacefully in his sleep, aged 73. For me, he’ll always be connected with Albatros, the instrumental number that could always soothe my soul. I hope it does yours too.

I’ll be back later for comment, TomCat.

  10. Try to do as little as possible, TomCat, and get yourself through that heatwave, and enjoy as much de-sweating as you can.

3:36 Won’t goop very well, will it?

Cartoon: Every Republican in office would be a good start.

Update: This new map is trying to give the pandemic a bit of a positive spin, i.e. lots of green. Texas is doing very badly, no matter what map.

MSNBC: The administration has hijacked the numbers by directing hospitals to send their data on cases and deaths directly to the WH and not the CDC and has hijacked the criteria for opening schools, asserting that science shouldn’t get in the way of reopening. How is anyone to believe anything this administration, including Trump,  is saying on the subject? Or any subject, for that matter?

TC: I think Trae is right, Republicans are terrified of what AOC represents and because she is young, a woman, a person of colour, outspoken, tells the truth, is a good speaker who gets her points across and, unlike them, is listened to, she becomes the focus of their impotent fear and rage.

BFTP: Great song, great accompanying video. Yes, change wíll come, let’s hope we all will live to see it happening.

  11. Thanks and rushed Hurry Hugs to all! 26
