Here is the one hundred seventy-fifth article in our Republicans on Parade series, featuring individuals who personify what the Republican Party has become. Today’s winner is an unnamed Portland police officer. He is so honored for beating and pepper-spraying a reporter for having the audacity to film his Republican brother officers illegally torturing a black demonstrator like the Republican Nazis they are.

0608PigsAttackA Portland freelance reporter has penned an account of being beaten and pepper-sprayed by police officers while trying to film them making an arrest last night.

Video taken from a helicopter by WW’s news partner KATU-TV around 11:45 pm on June 6 shows a person filming police in Chapman Square, until an officer turns to him, hits him with a baton and twice pepper-sprays him in the face.

Donovan Farley, a longtime contributor to WW’s Arts & Culture section, says he was that person. His account matches what’s shown in the helicopter video.

Farley says in his account that he approached the scene because he heard a protester say he could not breathe as police officers were forcefully arresting him on the ground. Farley alleges the methods police used to make the arrest resembled those that Minneapolis police applied that killed George Floyd.

“As the man sputtered and spit and gasped, I, for reasons that I’m sure are clear, shouted to get the fuck off his neck,” Farley recalls. “This is the moment a fourth officer approached, reaching for his baton.”… [emphasis added]

Here’s the included video.

Although Portland is one of the nation’s most liberal cities, our history of police misconduct, especially against Blacks leaves much to be desired.  Portland, like many cities, needs a citizen review board with teeth.

  1. What the Freak?? Gawd, this makes me ill.
The police using force, and it’s all over the US! Violence is not the answer either.
I hope and pray that this young man (and all the others harmed by the police force(s)) are going to recover, and be all right, and will stay and be safe.

  2. I hear peoole allude to “defunding” police, and I hear people who prefer to discuss “reforming” police, and I doubt whether either is exactly accurate – maybe “reorganizing” would be the best choice, but I’m open to conviction on that.

Because the thing is, anything we do to an existing police department will still have to cope with the existing police union.  So it appears to me that we kind of need to dissolve all existing departments and replace them with new entities, which will not be bound to an existing union contract, but will negotiate from scratch.  Plenty of corporations have done similar tings to defang good unions – why not do it to defang a bad union?

Yeah, that’s a long process.  And some defunding (with redirection of funds) and some reforming is going to have to take place as soon as possible.  But I don’t really see any other way for reform to be lasting.

  3. Jerk officers who use their authority as an excuse for brutality hurt all cops, especially the good ones. We can’t tar all constables with the same brush. Police departments need reform and better oversight.

  4. awful….and this is how it started…….I could have said the same about Minneapolis a month ago that you said about liberal city and police misconduct especially against blacks…….it is the main city that elected Keith Ellison and Ilhan Omar to Congress….also an area that incredibly supported Paul Wellstone (Bernie before Bernie was Bernie) and Bernie…..etc

  5. Say, Bunker-Boy – You want to see REAL THUGS in action violating our Constitution’s First Amendment?

Take a look at this Tweet of the heavy-set cop going after a journalist who shows him his press credentials – but still chases after him, hits him w/ his baton … TWICE, and pepper sprays him.

Come out of your damn bunker and see how you’ve truly frucked up America, you A-Hole!

  6. With a Commander in Chief urging police, the military and everything in between to “dominate” the streets, these forces are absolved from any restrained, not even when they are in fact copying the methods of Floyd’s murder. But they don’t want any onlookers, beating those literally away from the scene. But they are too stupid to realize that these actions will come back to bite them in the a$$.

  7. Despicable rotten bas*ard….that goes for all who shows this type of brutal actions.
I tried, but couldn’t stand watching the video. I’ve seen enough of this violent. I pray that all of these types of violent acts come to a halt, NOW.
We’ve had enough and I pray these evil cops are all prosecuted.
That goes for our evil leader who also plays a bit part by instigating these type of violent actions.

  8. Thanks, Hugs, and Amen to all! 03

I fully agree with JD.  Republicans are screaming about about removing/dismantling/defunding Police Departments, leaving people without police protection.  We really need to change the syntax to make our intent clear.  We need to replace/reorganize police departments creating a public safety environment in which Republican police can no kill and maim peaceful citizens with impunity.  That includes tearing up police union contracts.

  9. That cop ought to get fired, and more!
Ironically, as per Malcolm Gladwell’s “David and Goliath,” behavior like those cops showed will just add to the backlash, as they are increasingly seen to have no legitimacy.
