Short Takes:From Mother Jones (H/T Daily Kos): Here’s something sleazy: In 2019, the state of Montana had to twice warn voters about mailers from the Republican National Committee disguised to look like official 2020 Census documents. They were actually requests for money and voter information to help re-elect President Donald Trump.
But the GOP hasn’t stopped.
In response to our recent request for your political mail, a Michigan resident sent us a document that looks almost identical to the one the GOP came under fire for last year. (We’ve lightly redacted the document.) Our reader isn’t alone—a Michigan TV station wrote about the practice causing “confusion” recently, too. We’ve contacted Michigan’s census officials and are awaiting comment.

From KOIN: A rally planned by the Ku Klux Klan at the Multnomah County Courthouse was canceled Saturday hours before its scheduled start. But throngs of anti-fascist protesters arrived, leading to the arrest of 3 people.
About three hours prior to the KKK rally taking place, the Portland Police Bureau announced organizers — who they did not name — had backed out of the event early Saturday.
Before the arrests, Portland police said it was a peaceful demonstration.
Olivia Katbi Smith, the co-chair of the Portland Chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America, said hundreds came out to protest the KKK rally.
Kudos to the Democratic Socialists! Oregon Leads the way! RESIST!!

Cartoon – Let’s hope it stays in the past.
MoJo – Yes, I did see it (the word “census” has become like a magnet to me.) Yes, it’s sleazy. MoJo has redacted it so it can’t be seen whether is has the box that was on the 2010 ones which said “YOUR RESPONSE IS REQUIRED BY LAW” – which is not confusing, just fraudulent AF. (BTW, Kerry Eleveld is on paid staff at Daily Kos, which means his articles are edited and can be trusted. You can see “Daily Kos Staff” under his byline.)
SNL – Bernie always says Larry David does a better Bernie Sanders than he does (they are distantly related, incidentally.) Who knew Cecily Strong could do zaghrouta!
KOIN – “Before the arrests, Portland police said it was a peaceful demonstration.” Umm -if so – then why the arrests? Not for marijuana durely – it’s legal there now, isn’t it?
Past – If it was in a mivie, I’m more likely to remember it, as I do this one (Midnight Cowboy), which may be odd because I don’t go to the movies. But I do hear a lot of movie music.
Addendum – There is an opinion piece on Daily Kos today by a first-time poster which presents a perspective on Trump and his supporters which is breathtaking. PLEASE DO NOT ASSUME FROM THE TITLE THAT YOU KNOW WHAT IT SAYS. It’s not that long, and we all should read it. (The comments are long, but not the piece itself.)

If I had to guess, I’d say that the police were unhappy that the KKK went into hiding and took it on demonstrators. As progressive as Portland is, many in our PD are the exact opposite.
A problem in law enforcement everywhere … and I mean worldwide, not just in the US.
I agree, but in Portland, police violence is more extreme than anywhere I have lived.

Thanks TC–I saw the DK story.
In 2016 I got a ton of election mailers, some seeming to be official instead with many not giving info on who sent or funded them–that is why we got the new CA laws on disclosure, in part. Can’t recall if any seemed like census though. Thankfully most came after I had voted so I could ignore once I verified not official something. Thankfully 60% of us vote by mail and have this much protection (yet such a waste of paper and recycle bin filler).
The “I Am a Black Woman” article that Joanne Dixon dug up is definitely worth a read. Don’t let the title fool you – it has a twist as juicy as that of any good mystery novel.

SNL: The best jokes are from people who joke about themselves and their mob (as it is called here in Oz), and it was about time that it was the Democrats turn for some harmless fun. If any of the Democratic candidates are worth their salt, they know it best to have people laugh with them and not at them.
KOIN: Reading the short take of the KOIN article, the feeling crept up on me that it was all planned this way. The KKK dropping their rally at the very last moment, so anti-KKK protesters were on their own, protesting peacefully until three were arrested by the police. Right-wing media will surely use it to show how violent those left-wing protesters are while the KKK and White Supremacists are peaceful lambs, of course.
BFTP: This great song is forever connected to Midnight Cowboy, with Dustin Hoffman dying in the back of the bus, “going where the sun keeps shining through the pouring rain…”
