The Fifth Democratic Debate

As much as I wanted to watch last night, by the time we finished with chores, it was just ending.  However, I tried to find an unbiased article, and some video clips for you.  I hope to do better in December.

1121Debate

Just 10 weeks out from when the first votes are cast in the Democratic primary, four candidates have separated from the rest of the field – Joe Biden, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, and Pete Buttigieg. In the fifth Democratic debate last night, those four needed to shore up their strengths and address the weaknesses of their electoral coalitions. The remaining six needed to manufacture memorable moments that would help them make inroads against the leaders.

By this metric, Amy Klobuchar and Warren emerged from the pack. The first hour was Klobuchar’s best thus far, relying more on responses that showcased her witty, affable side that tends to resonate with voters more than detailed technocratic responses. This was in sharp contrast to the sharp-elbowed responses from Biden and Buttigieg – whose supporters Klobuchar needs – who were fending off attacks most of the night. Meanwhile, nearly all of Warren’s responses addressed racial disparities, a tack surely meant to appeal to black voters with whom she’s underperforming but desperately needs in order to have a shot at the nomination

To that I would add that Joe Biden had one of his worst gaffes to date.

  1. All good views.
Stephen Colbert covered the debate very well. lol

  2. It isn’t just Warren who needs black voters (and especially black women voters.) The PARTY needs – and depends – on black voters (amd especially black women voters.) As long as Kamala is in the race, that is going to be a challenge, I suspect.

Incidentally, Cory Booker is the other Rhodes scholar in the race.

Gonna need more fireworks … or maybe more popcorn.

  3. Glad to see Mayor Pete “needing” to be targeted.  Remain a Warren fan.
    I’ll watch Colbert another time.

  4. I don’t have cable TV (just internet) – so I didn’t watch it.  But someone at WaPo comments provided a funny, pithy summary ranking that was well received.  So I hope some of you will look it over and give your thoughts on its accuracy:

Pete — look at the country, turn the page, include us all.

Bernie — look at me, look at me, look at me.

    Kamala — well, we’re in a fight, aren’t we?

Cory — I know something about black voters.

Amy — How come I’m not killing this?

Tulsi — aloha nui and screw you all.

Warren — I’m always right and will kick over all the furniture in the room.

Uncle Joe — what was the question again? I hate Trump. I love America.
