A week ago today the world observed the passing of a much-loved political matriarch in a solemn ceremony celebrating the life of Barbara Bush.

But that doesn’t mean there weren’t some lighter moments we can enjoy.  Let’s begin by asking:

Who’s Missing from This Group Photo?

Well, other than Barbara …

But the biggest buzz revolved around that serene smile Melania shared with Pres. Obama.

It immediately brought back memories of the Trump Inaugural festivities fiasco.  Who can forget this iconic moment?

It was a performance so amazingly well executed it resulted in this:

And the big question all centered around Melania’s smile that she shared with Pres. Obama.  Why, there even was a quiz:

And of course everyone is wondering what exactly did Pres. Obama say to Melania that generated such a genuine (and very rare) smile.

But as it turns out, Obama didn’t say anything that caused her to smile.  But he did figure it out …

  1. Good piece Nameless!

Sitting next to Obama, Melania gets to experience a real human being, not a rude, uncultured tin pot fascist dictator, the likes of which makes every decent person hurl voluminously!

Oh, and to answer your question “Who’s Missing from This Group Photo?”,  absolutely no one of any importance!!!

    • Nameless, thank you for being a day late.  Now I can be a day late without feeling guilty … and I needd that.

While I get grumpy when people (Helen Steiner Rice comes to mind) try to tell me not to weep for them when they die (don’t tell me how to process my grief, it’s MY grief, thank you very much), I get equally grumpy when people get all huffy about anyone who smiles at a funeral, let alone laughs.  Thank you for not doing that.  I am a great believer in funerals, and especially large funerals, combining recognition of the survivors’ loss with recognition of the very joys which make the loss grievable.  (Remember how Republicans got all huffy when Bill Clinton laughed at a joke AFTER the funeral, and then made his face solemn because he KNEW they would do that?)

That said, I can easily understand why Melania would easily smile so genuinely to be around people who show her consideration (as for instance the Obamas did when she and Donnie TwoScoops first visited the White House and Donnie ignored her), and NOT to be around someone who couldn’t even be bothered to remember her birthday (according to at least one report, he said his out-of-control- Faux Noise catastrophe interview WAS her birthday present.)

  3. MIA: Drumpf and he should be “MIA” soon enough. Maybe not soon enough for a majority of us.

Yep, I remember Melania at the Drumpf “fiasco”. Melania was not “acting” as her mannerism was genuinely felt.

Of the two photos, the one with the pews was taken at the funeral. Although the one with just Melania
in it might as well have been at a funeral too.

Comment by Lynn above says it all with regards to Obama & Melania sitting together.

Thanks to  SoINeedAName for an entertaining article.

  4. Very good, Nameless. 04

If you want me to have fun at a funeral, put Trump in the box! 12

  5. I’m with Lynn on who’s missing? No One.
Best Tweets I’ve seen and I liked it so well, I’ll share with y’all.
    From ‘Great Scott’:
“Melania looks happier at a funeral than she has in ages. Wouldn’t you too if you went from being with Donald every day to sitting next to Barack?”
    ‘A2 Schatz’
“The absence of @realDonaldTrump speaks volumes.
Shout out to my man Barack Obama for keeping Melania company while her petulant toddler of a husband is golfing…#BarbaraBushFuneral #SaturdayMorning”.
    Positive Politics‘:
“Today we saw living proof that it is more fun and relaxing to be with Barack Obama at a funeral than it is to be with Donald Trump at a festive social event. Once we get DJT out of the White House, we can Make America Smile Again. (MASA)”.
Great post, Nameless, Thank you, and
    Thanks to JD for cross-posting.

  6. Good comments from everyone, but I have no sympathy for Melania.  She had to know what she was getting when she married him, and she stays.

  7. Spot-on posting, Nameless. Melania looks like a totally different woman when she’s around genuine people, without Drumpf around. But sometimes I think most of her clenched jaws at these occasions are caused by her feet which are killing her when standing around to long on those ridiculously high stiletto heels.

  8. Love ’em!!! 12

    • Love the Spotlight!

He needs all the help he can get!

Lord knows she has her flaws, but I think she honestly cares about Barron AND America.

Twitler?  Sadly, not so much on either of those.  (Unless it can be monetized)

  9. And he gets an Oscar for best Buffoon?
