Kathy Hochul Rocks!

I have to admit it.  I was not confident that Kathy Hochul would pull out a victory in one of the most heavily gerrymandered Republican districts in the country, a district where Republicans enjoy an advantage of 30,000 registered voters, a district where Rove and the Koch suckers spent over $1 million.  She won it on the issues, and not only does this add another Democrat to the House, but also, her campaign is an example that can be carried forward to 2012.

Democrats scored an upset in one of New York’s most conservative Congressional districts on Tuesday, dealing a blow to the national Republican Party in a race that largely turned on the party’s plan to overhaul Medicare.

The results set off elation among Democrats and soul-searching among Republicans, who questioned whether they should rethink their party’s commitment to the Medicare plan, which appears to have become a liability heading into the 2012 elections.

Two months ago, the Democrat, Kathy Hochul, was considered an all-but-certain loser in the race against the Republican, Jane Corwin. But Ms. Hochul seized on the Republican’s embrace of the proposal from Representative Paul D. Ryan of Wisconsin, to overhaul Medicare, and she never let up.

On Tuesday, she captured 47 percent of the vote to Ms. Corwin’s 43 percent, according to unofficial results. A Tea Party candidate, Jack Davis, had 9 percent… [emphasis added]

My paltry $10 was well spent.

Republican pundits are blaming the Teabagger.  Corwin accused Hochul of misrepresenting her views.  We know better.

The formula going forward is clear.  If you have a Republican representative, say this, over and over again, to everyone you know in your district.

  1. Maybe now the rest of the left will get out of their diapers and see how a fight is fought. We watched this one closely and Hochul did not bring a pillow to a gun fight. Good for her. I hope she has shown the rest of them how it is done. ISSUES not rhetoric.

  2. How very satisfying to see Karl Rove wasting all that money! This is a tremendous victory for the Democrats, and each and every one of them should seize it and run against the utterly ridiculous Ryan plan all next year. If they play their cards right, this could restore a Democratic House majority and strengthen their hold on the Senate, AND TEACH THOSE G&%(# FAR-RIGHT REPUBLICANS A LESSON THEY’LL NEVER FORGET!!!

  3. Great news but we cannot afford to get complacent. I can almost bet that Republicans will ante up their voter suppression agenda.

  4. Good on Kathy – she really pulled this one off. The Ryan budget is the kiss of death for anyone that touches it. Hopefully for Ryan too. And the Repubs spent $3.4M on this campaign according to Huff Po. I love to see them waste their money!

  5. Memo to Democrats: Ryan & the Repubicans’ efforts to dismantle Medicare/SS is a club that THEY gave us – so USE IT relentlessly in beating them over their heads with it!

Combine last night with now winning FIVE special elections (NY-26; NH State House; Jacksonville, FL mayoral; Wisconsin State Assembly; Maine State Senate) that were all won by Democrats in historically solid Repubican districts – all in the month of May – along with 538’s Nate Silver’s take on the bigger implications of Hochul’s victory … well, it’s just damn good news:

Still, a seat that would ordinarily be won by Republicans by about 12 points, but was instead won by the Democrats by 6 points, is a pretty big deviation from the norm. Odds are, like in the special election in Massachusetts last year, that some part of this had to do with factors that could carry over to the national level, while some other part had to do with circumstances specific to the district.

  6. It is fun to watch the GOP try and spin this every which way but the right way. They still do not see that with their support of the Ryan budget they stepped into a cesspool of crap and it is not coming off of their shoes.

  7. I think Democrats still need to be on guard. I think the tea party definitely helped a Democratic victory and the divisions in the GOP need to be stoked for 2012 elections.

    • Kevin, all the Republican pundits said that if Davis polled less than 10%, Corwin would win. He polled 9%. When he lost support it shifted to the Democrat.

I agree. They welcomed in all manner of garbage. Let them rot in it.

  8. It’s not over til its over– this is a battle won– war goes on , and we must not sit back and rest—-

  9. What a great victory for Kathy Hochul, who truly is a great public servant. This should be a clear sign for all Repubs and upcoming elections. Keep hitting them over the head. They gave us the weapon and it is time for Dems to take advantage and REALLY TAKE OUR COUNTRY BACK. Kathy is by far the better Congresswoman and public servant.
