A friend of mine (see Hat Tip below) on Care2 directed me to this petition and asked me to do a piece on it here at PP.  In researching the subject, I did a Google Image search on depleted uranium.  The pictures of disfigured children that confronted me were so extreme that I almost threw up and did cry.

10sufferingkidUranium weapons, often called ‘depleted’ uranium (DU) weapons, are manufactured from radioactive waste materials produced during the nuclear fuel chain and the production of nuclear weapons. They cause widespread and long lasting contamination of the environment. These weapon systems are radiologically [sic] and chemically toxic.

Many people – innocent civilians especially children, military veterans, industry workers – have illnesses and medical problems, which may be due to their exposure to ‘depleted’ uranium. In areas such as southern Iraq, where uranium munitions were used by the US and the UK, there have been reports of increases in cancers, leukaemia [sic] and birth defects.

At least 18 countries possess these weapons, the use of which is contrary to existing humanitarian law.

We, the people, need to let governments and the United Nations know that these weapons can have no part in a humane and caring world. Every signature counts! These online signatures will be added to more than 200,000 paper signatures already collected

We call for your support to demand:

  1. An immediate end to the use of uranium weapons.
  2. Disclosure of all locations where uranium weapons have been used and immediate removal of the remnants and contaminated materials from the sites under strict control.
  3. Health surveys of the ‘depleted’ uranium victims and environmental investigations at the affected sites.
  4. Medical treatment and compensation for the ‘depleted’ uranium victims.
  5. An end to the development, production, stockpiling, testing, trade of uranium weapons.
  6. A Convention for a Total Ban on Uranium Weapons.

  3. I urge you to ban uranium wepons.

  4. noted and signed

  5. all nuclear weapons should be destroyed within a short time frame.

  6. We should turn away from nuclear weapons and power all together, the depleted waste will haunt the world for thousands of years. Are we really so stupid to continue, governments have not learnt anything, it is all about greed and power. Look at Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Long Island and Chernobyl should have really tought us a big lesson. Now Japan, 6 reactors in danger, meanwhile the US is putting nuclear waste into missiles targeting Irak and now Lybia, so desperate to dispose of its waste. The French are sending all their waste to LΓΌneburg in Germany because they felt they won the war. Out of all this I feel the Germans came out as the most responsible Nation closing down 7 aging nuclear power plants immetiately after the Japan quake, not taking any chances. Germany has several clean coal fired power plants, I live in Australia, we have no nuclear power plants, only one small research reactor, but we supply a lot of yellow cake to the word. But we have dirty coal power plants without scubber plants, pumping all that shit into the air for the world to share. Cheap and nasty! Just like the Japanese disaster, it will go around for the world to share. But I really admire those 50 heroes at Fukushima who are risking their lives for their country and also the world. And I cannot think of any other nation who would have citizens that dedicated. Unfortunately they may be doomed, but in my mind they are the real heroes and if they can prevent a total meltdown, they will be saving the lives of a lot of people, but loosing their own.

    • Welcome K! πŸ™‚

While I tend to agree with you, that is another issue that we have addressed here before and will again.

  7. Tom, thanks so much for promoting this petition! ((hug))
