Everyday Erinyes #104

Experts in autocracies have pointed out that it is, unfortunately, easy to slip into normalizing the tyrant, hence it is important to hang on to outrage.  These incidents which seem to call for the efforts of the Greek Furies (Erinyes) to come and deal with them will, I hope, help with that.  Even though there are many more which I can’t include.  As a reminder, though no one really knows how many there were supposed to be, the three names we have are Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone. These roughly translate as “unceasing,” “grudging,” and “vengeful destruction.”

So, we’ve talked before here about deported veterans (“deported veterans” – doesn’t that just physically hurt to read or say?)  But we haven’t talked about, because I didn’t realize it could happen until I received an email this week, deporting people who are essentially active duty military.

Among those who watched the smoke rise from the World Trade Center into a perfect blue sky on 9/11[/2001] were an Army Reserve officer on the cliffs at West Point and a 7-year-old undocumented immigrant on the street in Queens.

The officer, Major Margaret Stock, wondered if the attacks might have been prevented if only the military had enough personnel fluent in foreign lamguages, such as those spoken by the plotters.  So she started designing and creating the Military Accessions Vital to the National Interest program (MAVNI).  It would offer expedited citizenship to immigrants speaking certain critical languages.  It would also make the same offer to physicians, nurses, and dentists (of which the military has been pitifully short for a long, long time.)  The point was to make sure, in Major Stock’s words, “we have enough people to protect the country.”

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which began in June 2012, opened the pool for MAVNI to these immigrants, better known as “DREAMers.”  When his mother heard about the program on TV, it was 2016, and the seven-year-old boy from Queens was now 21.  He was immediately interested.  His native language (Punjabi) qualified him, and he passed the language test fluently.  He signed the contract, and he took the oath.

“I, Harminder Saini, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.”

Saini was now a soldier.  The only thing missing was his background check.

But the Army had tripled the number of background checks for MAVNI without hiring enough checkers to actually do them.

Saini is now 23 – still prepared to ship out at a moment’s notice.  He’s been reading from a list that James Mattis gave to a TV interviewer, and going to the gym a lot to stay fit.

But in September, Saini and hundreds of other waiting MAVNI DREAMers learned

…that the president to whom they were all sworn to obey had revoked DACA. The termination was to take effect in six months, at which time the MAVNI DREAMers who were not yet in basic training and on the way to naturalization would be in jeopardy of being deported from the country they had sworn to protect.

Back in September, there was some talk about a bipartisan effort led by Lindsay Graham and Dick Durbin to retore the DREAM program by act of Congress.  But so many things seem to have gotten in the way since them … has anyone heard anything lately?

Certainly there’s at least one Congressman, I am thinking particularly of a certain dentist from Arizona (who incidentally never served himself) who will gladly torpedo any such effort if he can.

Congress also has characters such Rep. Paul Gosar, a former “Arizona Dentist of the Year” who has proposed legislation barring what he calls “DACA aliens” from serving in the military. Gosar himself has never served, though the armed services have long suffered a shortage of dentists, as MANVI seeks to address.

“I agree with @POTUS that it’s time to get rid of #DACA!” Gosar tweeted on September 5, making sure to append a DDS to his name.

Tell you what, Dear Furies, how about you, Alecto, go after Durbin and Graham and – well, the old saying it put a flea in their ears, but I am thinking more in terms of putting a bee where the sun doesn’t shine, to really get them moving on this.  Megaera and Tisiphone, you get hold of Gosar, and find out who the rest are, both in the House and in the Senate, who feel this way (we all know these people are big on feeling, since they don’t think at all), and – apply some compulsory re-education.

The Furies and I will be back.

Yesterday was a crazy day.  WWW had a great time with her niece at Santa’s pancake breakfast and got here at about 10 AM.  After we de-stunk the TomCat, I worked getting the blog published and messages out.  By the time we got done, I was completely pooped, so I fell asleep during meditation upon the Ellipsoid Orb.  I had thawed a package of turkey bird leftovers, do I feasted on bird and stuffing.  I still have a 2 lb. pkg. of frozen turkey in addition to the frozen soup base.  Store to door will be off two weeks at the end of December, so I’m trying to arrange alternative delivery to avoid Safeway.com.

From The New Yorker: Breaking his silence on Alabama’s embattled Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate, Donald Trump warned on Wednesday that dumping Roy Moore could start a “dangerous trend” of believing women.

“I think we need to be very, very careful here,” Trump told reporters. “This is not just about Roy Moore. This is about our country deciding that we are going to start believing women, something that we have never done before.

“This is a very dangerous road we’re heading down,” he said.

Trump cautioned that, if instituted, a new practice of believing women would “totally destroy” the system that the country already has in place. “For years we’ve had a system of believing men,” he said. “It’s worked very well. It’s done a great job.”

Andy, are you planning a return to satire? RESIST!!

From Alternet: President Donald Trump’s lawyer claims his client cannot be guilty of obstruction of justice because he is the president.

John Dowd, the president’s outside lawyer, insisted he drafted Trump’s tweet over the weekend that seemingly confessed to obstruction but argued the social media posting did no such thing, reported Axios.

“The tweet did not admit obstruction,” Dowd told the website. “That is an ignorant and arrogant assertion.”

The attorney insisted Trump could not possibly be guilty of obstruction because he was the chief executive.

That sounds like Crawford Caligula’s Unitary Executive hypothesis. RESIST!!

It’s Monday.  I’m not taking a nap this morning, because I had a lot of paperwork to so, and now that it’s done, I’ll just write earlier than usual and publish right after lunch.  That’s probably a good thing, because I’m battling a mild case of Republicosis again.  I seem to have that more often since my gall bladder was removed, so I think I’m going to cut out stool softeners, except for when I have Republicitis.  In the other hand, that might not be it.  Since there has been an asshole in the White House, mine has decided to RESIST!! Sad smile

Short Takes:

From Media Matters: Buzzfeed News has obtained and published “an explosive cache of documents” confirming Breitbart as the mouthpiece for neo-Nazis, white supremacists, and the racist right-wing movement known as the alt-right. Buzzfeed’s entire report on Breitbart management’s courting of neo-Nazis and white supremacists can be found here.

From Daily Kos: San Francisco 49ers Safety Eric Reid had something to say after his team lost to the Indy Colts in overtime — 26-23 — the game which Vice-Resident Mike Pence staged a planned publicity stunt walk out on to whine-protest players exercising the first amendment rights to protest the extra judicial executions of young black men by bad police officers.

Talking to reporters in the locker room Reid said:

"My honest reaction: … Does anybody know the last time he’s (Pence) been to a football game? With that being said, he tweeted out a three-year-old photo of him at a Colts game, so with the information I have, the last time he was at a Colts game was three years ago. So this looks like a PR stunt to me. He knew our team has had the most players protest. He knew that we were probably going to do it again. This is what systemic oppression looks like. A man with power comes to the game, tweets a couple of things out and leaves the game with an attempt to thwart our efforts. Based on the information I have, that’s the assumption I’ve made."

I’d say that’s a safe assumption Eric, and well stated.

I’d say it’s a safe assumption too, since Trump has admitted telling Pence to leave.  WE paid for one damn pricey photo-op!  RESIST!!

From NY Times: The White House on Sunday delivered to Congress a long list of hard-line immigration measures that President Trump is demanding in exchange for any deal to protect the young undocumented immigrants known as Dreamers, imperiling a fledgling bipartisan push to reach a legislative solution.

Before agreeing to provide legal status for 800,000 young immigrants brought here illegally as children, Mr. Trump will insist on the construction of a wall across the southern border, the hiring of 10,000 immigration agents, tougher laws for those seeking asylum and denial of federal grants to “sanctuary cities,” officials said.

As much as I want to protect the dreamers, Trump is charging too high a price in his Republican oppression of other undocumented Latinos and their families.  RESIST!!

I’m feeling much better today, but I hope the Immodium does not convert the Republicosis to Republicitis.  I never made it to NFL yesterday, so I never learned that one of my best fantasy players, Gronkowski, was IA last night, so that may cause me to be foot-flattened.  Wendy says thank you for your condolences.

From The New Yorker Twice: Calling the move an “urgent response to recent unfortunate events,” Puerto Rico has issued a sweeping travel ban on malignant narcissists, effective immediately.

Starting on Wednesday, Customs and Border Protection officials at Puerto Rico’s ports of entry will be equipped with the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM–V) issued by the American Psychiatric Association, and will be instructed to look for symptoms of malignant narcissism in those attempting to enter.

“If port officials encounter a visitor who has a pompous and arrogant demeanor, needs the constant admiration of others, and is unwilling to empathize with others’ feelings, wishes, or needs, that visitor will be denied entry,” a Puerto Rican government statement read.

Attempting to pour cold water on reports of a rift between him and Donald Trump, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told reporters on Wednesday that he remains “fully committed to this moron’s agenda.”

“There will always be people in Washington eager to stir controversy when there is none,” Tillerson said, at a hastily called press conference at the State Department. “I am standing here today to tell you that I am on the same page as this idiot.”

Elaborating on that point, the former oil-company C.E.O. stressed that he and Trump were in agreement on a broad range of issues. “From North Korea to Iran to China, there is no daylight between me and this imbecile,” he said.

In the first, Andy must be reporting straight news.  In the second, if Andy is accurate, both morons and imbeciles will be suing Tillerson for defamation of character.  RESIST!!

From Business Insider: FBI Special Counsel Robert Mueller reportedly obtained a search warrant for records of the "inauthentic" accounts Facebook shut down earlier this month and the targeted ads these accounts purchased during the 2016 election.

The warrant was first disclosed by the Wall Street Journal on Friday night and the news was later confirmed by CNN.

Legal experts say the revelation has enormous implications for the trajectory of Mueller’s investigation into Russia’s election interference, and whether Moscow had any help from President Donald Trump’s campaign team.

"This is big news — and potentially bad news for the Russian election interference ‘deniers,’" said Asha Rangappa, a former FBI counterintelligence agent.

Rangappa, now an associate dean at Yale Law School, explained that to obtain a search warrant a prosecutor needs to prove to a judge that there is reason to believe a crime has been committed. The prosecutor then has to show that the information being sought will provide evidence of that crime.

Tick… tick… tick… RESIST!!

From Daily Kos:

This will not shock you. House Republicans are advancing legislation, H.R. 620, the so-called ADA Education and Reform Act of 201, that would gut the landmark law that has allowed millions of Americans to participate in public life. The Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law more than a quarter of a century ago, and has revolutionized life for many disabled Americans.

However, the job isn’t done and many more still face insurmountable barriers when it comes to accessing private businesses. Now Republicans are trying to push a change in favor of those businesses, putting the onus on their would-be customers to force them to comply with the law.

H.R. 620 would completely change the way in which a business is required to comply with the ADA. Instead of requiring that a business comply proactively, the bill would place the burden on the individual who is being denied access. This bill proposes that after an individual with a disability is denied access she must first notify the business owner, with exacting specificity, that her civil rights were violated, and then wait for six months to see if the business will make “substantial progress” toward access, before going to a court to order compliance.

As one confined to a wheelchair, I often have difficulty getting through doors, navigating aisles that are too narrow, using restrooms without rails, encountering crosswalks without curb ramps, etc.  If I had to wait for six months, just to see if I had access to a business, I’d be inclined to bitch, go elsewhere, and not go through all the hassle of following up. RESIST!!
