Yesterday, SCROTUS eviscerated the Voting Rights Act. I’m not providing a link because the news is everywhere. I am not saying this in its defense, because there is no defense. But I presume they are looking at Clarence to justify their illusion that people of color are less intelligent. (If they would look at Ketanji, they would not be able to hold on to that lie.) Also yesterday, I received an email which included a poll. I almost never respond to those polls which are sent out, for the simple reason that they include no way to express one’s specific feelings about a person or an issue, and my feelings are generally far more nuanced that the possible responses provided. But this poll had a response which actually nailed my feelings, and even allowed me to add s few words explaining why, so I did respond. If that piques your curiosity, here’s the link. You need to scroll down below the petition to get to the poll part, but not far.

This article comes with a roughly 45 minute video which covers in detail corruption which is a matter of public record but which has been under the radar for at least 30 years. You don’t need to watch it – I’m just telling you so you can make a more informed decision.

This feels like a good day to post an article titled “Six Solutions to Fix the Supreme Court” = particularly when it’s from The Brennan Center.

Archived from The Lever, the brainchild of David Sirota, a former campaign manager for Bernie Sanders, and a Substack personality in his own right. It’s in the category of “investigative journalism.” The case in the title is a civil suit in Maine. There’s a link to the actual complaint, but the complainants are three named groups and the defendants are six individuals, in their capacities as elected or appointed officials of the state of Maine. Heaven only knows what the short name will end up being.

Yesterday, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested for (insider financial) misconduct in office. This may be the most spectacular news out of the UK since Charles I was beheaded. This link is to a video lasting over an hour, but scroll down and you can get some details about what’s happening and will happen. Not all the details which make the whole thing so inspiring to listen to, but some. The irony that a constitutional monarchy appears better able to deal with a rogue in the (family) government than we do is not lost on Adam or Vicky or me. But the key to this ability is not the monarchy or the lack of it, but the Constitution – and respect for it – or the lack thereof. Also, next week, possibly as early as Monday, the Senate will vote on the Boundary Waters permission to mine, and, if it passes, these waters, which by the way Canada also borders, will be turned into literal battery acid. And every other state will, in time, suffer similar losses of public lands. The linked video is long, but it is “from the horse’s mouth” since it features Senator Tina Smith of Minnesota.

Another win for the rule of law. The law in question is late – and yes, justice delayed is justice denied – but it’s still better then never.

Law Day here is not until May 1 (as the rest of the world celebrates Labor Day.) But it appears we are having our own little law day here.

From Monday, reminding me of the quip attributed to Mark Twain that “Everypne talks about the weather, but no one does anything about it.” Well, yes, Mr. Clemens. And that’s exactly why we are here.

Yesterday, I saw Virgil and as usual we played cribbage. I may have said before that we count each hand, but we don’t keep a running total. We did when he was at other facilities, and i was careful to make sure he won at least half of the games we played. This can be done with making less-than-ideal discards to the crib. And anyone’s who’s ever played knows that near the end of the game, who wins it can depend simply on who counts first. The way we do it now is a bit easier since I don’t have to constantly watch the board (or the notepad – it can be done on a notepad if one tallies in groups of 5 and is consistent how many groups fit in a row, one can see at a glance who’s ahead). But as I say, just counting each hand without keeping a total, that’s not an issue. Also, if my “tags” look really gossipy today, yes, I took a break from thinking up impersonal issues to call them.

As with Lisa Cook, so with Tish James. Neither attempted t claim that two homes were both primary residences, and both have the receipts. Will that stop MAGA Ed Martin? Of course not.

I didn’t squeeze this into Sunday because it was already full, and also because, though this is a lovely gesture, the circumstances inspiring it are so grim.
