Yesterday, Malcolm reported (so some or all of this may have happened Tuesday) that we bmbed Iran, which responded by attacking Kuwait, Bahrain, and United Arab Emirates. In Kuwait the airport was burned. Kuwait attempted to retaliate, but the missile “went stupid” (a term of art) and bombed straight back down to its point of origin. Kuwait only reported one fatality. Yet, no one is saying that the “cease fire” is over. Also, Feank Figliuzzi posted a 49 minute video, with Gareth Gore, who has written a book about the origins, purpose, and accomplishments of Opus Dei (by using the word “accomplishment”, I do not mean to imply that any are positive.) It’s a force to be reckoned with – Gore calls it an abusive cult – and forearmed is forearmed.

Guns. I don’t believe the Mango Moron is smart enough to figure this out by himself. Some evil genius must have advised him on it.

Archived from Lever News. Same song, different verse. Repubicansre so (uninrentionally) transparent.

I’m sure there are bigger things happening than what Robert Reich is covering here. But this kind of personal. It’s our money that the Apricot Antichrist is throwing around on “attractions” like Milli Vanilli (who could not show up anyway, since one of the two is dead.)

Yesterday, My inbox was packed with Substack videos. I didn’t watch every one, but I did watch more than usual. Besifes Malcolm Nance’s “warcast” (he’s back to calling it “warcast” since the “cease fire” has been broken, but it still contains a lot of geopolitics), there was a video from Vicky Ward Inveastigates with Adam Klasfeld with her part filned in the Epstein Files Museum which is currently in New York City but will be traveling throughout the nation. And the one from the Brennan Center with a NYU professor whose book on the Constitution was just released. It took up a lot of my time but I would have missed a lot if I had skipped any one of them.

This is just the first of five stories in a single email from Dean Blundell. It is the longest (sorry) and the most scary (sorry) of the five, and IMO the most consequential. It doesn’t necessarily require politicians and/or elected officials to bring about 1984. It can be done by private businesses.

From POGO. Everything with the Orange Oligarch is transactional – even if the only thing he gets out of it is screwing people. After all, that is near and dear to what in someone else would be a heart.

I can’t say I was surprised by this, although I didn’t know the actual numbers.

Yesterday, the radio opera was “Tristan und Isolde” by Wagner, who is known for long operas – but this may be the longest (5 hours with intermissions) – unless you count the Ring Cycle as a single work. Probably everyone knows the story (even if you don’t think you do), it’s so iconic. Almost everyone betrays just about everyone else in one way or another, and in the end the doomed lovers die together. And you may well have heard parts of it too -it’s been quoted in multiple movie scores. At least one tenor and two conductors have collapsed and died after a performance. I looked up the photos of this new production and was somewhat spooked to see that they made Tristan and Isolde look almost like twins – or almost like the same person (Garnted, the photo is of the dancers who co-represented them – but still.) It fits, certainly, but it’s a new approach – at least to me – and it catches the eye, but it also startles. Debussy is credited with making the transition from 19th century art music to 20th century with “Afternoon of a Faun” (1912) – but without Tristan (1865) I’m not sure he could have (even though he made fun of it in “Golliwog’s Cakewalk”. People tend to either love it or loathe is (and sometimes both, though not at the same time.) Also – sadly – Robert Mueller’s death Friday night became public. if you want to wait a day before reading his eulogy (by Joyce Vance), I get it Off to see Virgil now – will check in.

This from Ukrinform is a bit late, and it is more political than I usually like to use on Sundays. But it made me smile.

In case you missed Gavin Newsom‘s response to the Saffron Sauron referring to him as the President of the United States – it’s classic.

Well, SOME people understand that Ukraine is important, and deserves its independence. And are willing to put their money where their mouth is.

And SOME other people understand the importance of bison – not only to the earth, but particularly to indigenous Americans.

And still SOME other people understand the value of music with relation to medical conditions, even in surprising ways.

Yesterday, much of the snow was gone. It took longer in my back yard, which is on the west side of the house. The radio opera was the second half of Les Troyens, about the Trojans’ time in Carthage before they made it to Italy so (in the myth) their descendants could found Rome. Although the inly singer in both parts was John Vickers, as in the first half, all the solo singers were people I remember fondly, including Judith Blegen, with whom I shared a violin teacher – not at the same time, but later, after the teacher had taken a job at the college (now a university) in Alamosa, where I moved after leaving the USMC. She was as fine a violinist as she was a soprano. (I should say is, actually, since she’s still living, only four years older than I am, but she’s no longer singing in public.) Our mutual teacher is not mentioned in the Wikipedia article, but pretty much all professional musicians have more teaches and coaches than could possibly fit into a brief article. He taught her while she was in Montana. There may still be a debate as to whether or not Menotti wrote “Help, Help, The Globolinks” for her – Menotti denied it – nut there just aren’t very many operatic sopranos who can play the violin at a professional level, so his denial is a bit hard to believe. Off to see Virgil now; will check in.

OK, this story starts with a stupid mistake. But it gets better – and then just keeps getting better.

This story – is a lot of fun. And about how fun can help kids learning.

This is long for a Sunday – I try to keep them short and bright – but it is astonishing, at least to me. really though that if we knew how to diagnose anything, it would be this. Obviously I was wrong.

Yesterday, I found in my inbox and archived a Huff Post article on the civil suit that three Representatives have brought against the Apricot Antichrist. (I didn’t get all the money-asks out, but it is much easier to read than I found it. There is a good deal of white space and multiple photos. so it’s longish to scroll.) The lawsuit is not new, but it’s news to me that is it still ongoing. Generally, the websites of Representatives will not accept contact forms from non-constituents, and I have not checked to see whether any of these three is an exception to that. But if you are mailing Christmas (Hanukkah, Diwali, whatever) cards, and can spare three, this might be a good way to use the spares to send gratitude. Also, I saw the results on the special election in Georgia (we won) and the Miami mayoral election, not won by a Democrat in 28 years. One source said that we lost the most recent prior election by 9 points, but won this one by 67 points. That is quite a flip. I’ve seen different numbers since, but all the numbers show striking flips.

This from the 19th does make a kind of very ugly sense – “Wombs are essential to ethnic nationalist movements.” It’s a natural consequence of fear of immigrants to be worried about the birth rate. If they could only relax and allow (and empower) government to do what it is meant to do, like “promote the general welfare,” the birth rate would manage itself. Not everyone is competent to be a parent.

I am NOT recommending that anyone try this from The Root. As someone implied in a response, it needs “a special set of skills.” But it gave me a smile – even though I don’t trust “Mike” as far as I could throw Rhode Island.

This from The F* News, suggests to me that we need to work much harder to demonstrate that the modern Republican Party is actually a death cult. The lead story can be Exhibit A. When we run out of letters, which sadly won’t take long – we can start over with AA, and so on.

Yesterday, I received the link to Barry’s online obituary from Carrie. Barry and I must have been in the Marines at about the same time. Also yesterday, Nancy Pelosi announced her retirement from Congress – giving San Francisco plenty of time for candidates to show up – and there are several already. The 19th has the story, and I’m sure they are not alone.

This by Joyce Vance is as good a combination of summary and marching orders as I have seen.

Doktor Zoom from Wonkette makes an excellent point here. Maybe I’m weird, but instead of being the 80-year-old in the room who thinks they know what will worked because it always has, I’m the 80-year-old in the room saying, “We have never seen anything like this in my life and I don’t know how to cope with it. If we are going to rely on history, we need to go back to FDR’s first term election to see what worked, and even then, today’s not quite the same. We need also to listen to people who are new politics, including young ones.” Rational people have a strong tendency to believe that rational argument can educate people. It can do that for some, but not for enough to win elections (at least not in red areas.) We have to find ways to meet people where they are.

Wonkette was hot yesterday. I already bumped one from them to Saturday so as not to duplicate sourcing, but this was simply too funny (in a scary way) to wait.
