Will His Dream Survive?

Martin Luther King, Jr. influenced my political thinking more than any other individual.  I was fortunate to have worked under him on Vietnam Summer and to have been present on the Washington Mall fifty-five years ago today on August 28, 1963. It’s hard to believe that we are once again fighting the battle to secure the voting rights won as a result of his dream, and to restore them, where racist Republicans are outlawing the right to vote. Will his dream survive?

Never before has there been such a threat that his dream will be destroyed by the Republican Reich!  Will it survive?  That depends on YOU!

My semi-annual eye torture was a success, as there is no evidence of the cancer.  I’m still a little blurry and quite tired, because the day is an ordeal.  We have a two day heat wave: Low 90°s today and mid 80°s tomorrow.  Hopefully I’ll see normally (for me) by then.

From YouTube (MSNBC Channel): What Happens If Democrats Take The House

If we take the House, everyone in the Trump Reich will have to lawyer-up. In self-defense, nobody new will go to work there. RESIST!! VOTE BLUE!!

From YouTube (RWW CHANNEL): RWW News: Jim Bakker Won’t Wear A Trump Hat For Fear Of ‘Being Murdered In The Street’

He wouldn’t be murdered in the street, but pigeons love the earth sufficiently to target Trump hats from any altitude. RESIST!! VOTE BLUE!!

From The New Yorker: Robert Mueller is renting a massive warehouse facility in suburban Virginia to accommodate the approximately forty cubic tons of evidence against Donald Trump that the independent counsel’s investigation is generating on a daily basis.

Employing over two thousand workers in a warehouse the size of seven football fields, the Mueller investigation has become the fastest-growing sector of the U.S. economy, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Working twelve-hour shifts, the members of Mueller’s evidence-storage team rarely leave the warehouse, where the punishing task of filing mountains of evidence against Trump proceeds around the clock.

Short Take:

From Alternet: Arizona Republican Kelli Ward was blistered on Twitter on Sunday morning after it was revealed she and one of her staffers accused Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) of announcing that he was about to die at a time that would harm their campaign.

Late Saturday, following the announcement that McCain had succumbed to brain cancer at his home, Arizona TV reporter Brahm Resnik shared tweets between the staffer and Ward herself, in which they complained about the timing of McCain’s announcement that he was dying.

“I wonder if John McCain’s trying to steal attention from Ward’s bus tour by announcing his life is coming to an end,” the staffer wrote, with Ward replying, “I think they wanted to have a particular narrative that was negative to me.”

Well the next time John McCain dies, I hope he has the courtesy to consult these two fucking Republican idiots on the timing! RESIST!! VOTE BLUE!!  71 DAYS!!

Goodbye John

Senator John McCain and I disagreed on most issues, especially when he was running for President in 2008.  After he chose Bloody Bullseye Barbie, aka Drill Baby Dingbat, as his running mate, I even nicknamed him McConJob, because he was supporting Palin’s TEAbuggery several times daily.  That said, if I could have him trade places with any politician or pundit in Trump’s Republican Reich, I would do so without hesitation.  I pray for your family and all, who mourn your loss.  Goodbye John.

0826McCain

Senator John McCain, R-AZ, died at home at his ranch near Sedona today. He was 81 years old. His family announced earlier this week that the senator, whose brain tumor diagnosis was made public last year, would not be seeking further medical treatment for his cancer.

In his three decades in the Senate, McCain developed a reputation as the "maverick," voting according to his own principles instead of the party line. During his final years in office he stayed true to that designation by refusing to support the repeal of the Affordable Care Act last fall and continuing to be an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump, who once dismissed McCain’s heroism as a Navy officer in the Vietnam War who survived five and a half years of imprisonment and torture with the quip, "I like people who weren’t captured."…

…McCain retired from the Navy in 1981 and was elected to Congress the following year as a U.S. Representative for Arizona, where he served two terms before being elected to the Senate in 1986. He ran for president twice, losing the Republican primary to George W. Bush in 2000 and the 2008 general election, with Sarah Palin as his running mate, to Barack Obama.

CNN reports that McCain did not want Trump to attend his funeral, but he did request that Bush and Obama be invited to deliver eulogies.

"John McCain and I were members of different generations, came from completely different backgrounds, and competed at the highest level of politics," Obama wrote in a statement posted to Twitter Saturday evening. "But we shared, for all our differences, a fidelity to something higher — the ideals for which generations of Americans and immigrants alike have fought, marched, and sacrificed."… [emphasis added]

Inserted from <Salon.com>

Chris Mathews reflected on McCain’s greatness.

In that last speech, he had to know he was about to lose, and he was trying to heal the nation.

Here are a couple of his most courageous moments.

The Republican Party and their racist billionaires were spending millions to convince people like that women that Obama was not really an American.  They were furious at him.

With no disrespect intended toward John, I do think it’s appropriate to discuss what happens to his Senate seat.  Arizona Governor, Doug Ducey [R] will appoint a successor, until a special election can be held in 2020 to fill the seat until the general election in 2022.  Ducey ran and was elected as an ideologue, but he has governed as a conservative pragmatist.  In all probability, we’ll get a replacement that will goose-step in lock-step with Bought Bitch Mitch and the Republican Reich.

John did have a sense of humor, but after all, he was a Republican.

Here in the CatBox, I’m quite comfortable.  WWWendy is due in about an hour to destink the TomCat.  Tomorrow, I have my semi-annual screening for a recurrence of eye cancer with Alison, my ocular oncological surgeon.  It’s the one I hate, because the ultrasound right on my eyeball is like fingernails scratching a blackboard inside my head.  Please expect no more than a Personal Update tomorrow, and I won’t be sending links messages at Care2.

Short Takes:

From Washington Post: Unions representing federal workers on Saturday declared victory in what they have described as an assault by the Trump administration after a federal judge struck down key provisions of a set of executive orders aimed at making it easier to fire employees and weaken their representation.

The ruling, by U.S. District Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson in Washington, was a setback to the White House’s efforts to rein in federal unions, which have retained significant power over working conditions even as private-sector unions are in decline.

“It’s a big win for us,” said David Borer, general counsel for the American Federation of Government Employees. With 750,000 members, the AFGE was the largest of about a dozen unions to sue the administration to block the new rules affecting 2.1 million civil servants.

Kudos to the judge! Support Labor! RESIST!! VOTE BLUE!!

From Alternet: On Friday morning, the family of Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) announced his decision to discontinue treatment for brain cancer. It was a solemn announcement, effectively signalling the imminent end of a man of towering career, service, and legacy, and it ought to have been treated with respect from people of all persuasions.

Sadly, that was more than Fox News’ "Final Thoughts" host Tomi Lahren could muster.

Just hours after the announcement, at a campaign event for Arizona GOP Senate hopeful Kelli Ward, Lahren proclaimed that "we can’t put up another RINO [Republican In Name Only] like McCain

There must be a special place in hell for Lahren and Faux Noise Republicans of her ilk. RESIST!! VOTE BLUE!!

From NY Times: Democratic Party officials, after a yearslong battle between warring ideological wings, have agreed to sharply reduce the influence of the top political insiders known as superdelegates in the presidential nomination process.

Under the new plan, which was agreed to on Saturday afternoon in Chicago at the Democratic National Committee’s annual summer meetings, superdelegates retain their power to back any candidate regardless of how the public votes. They will now be largely barred, however, from participating in the first ballot of the presidential nominating process at the party’s convention — drastically diluting their power.

Superdelegates will be able to cast substantive votes only in extraordinary cases like contested conventions, in which the nomination process is extended through multiple ballots until one candidate prevails.

I’d rather see the Super Delegate system eliminated entirely, but this is a giant step in the right direction. RESIST!! VOTE BLUE!!

It’s that time of week again, so here are four fine video clips from Bill’s show last night.  Enjoy!

Monologue: Orange Tuesday

Bill sure enjoys watching the stool pigeons come home to roost.

Kara Swisher: Keeping Tech Honest

I disagree with Bill about requiring ID on social media. Some people live in communities so Republican that they could not tweet they are gay, pro choice, or progressive without severe harassment or far worse.

Former CIA Director John Brennan

Brennan is right. All the officials and formal officials who are speaking out against Traitor Trump are heroes.

New Rule: Wok the Vote

Would we be better off with Canada, instead of China?

An excellent week!

“Everywhere I go, people tell me that if I am impeached, they’re going to watch it,” he said. “The ratings are going to be through the roof.”

He said that he expected his impeachment ratings to be “many, many times” the size of the audience for Bill Clinton’s impeachment, in 1998.

“It’s not even going to be close,” Trump said. “The ratings for Bill Clinton’s impeachment were a joke.

Everyday Erinyes #133

Posted by at 8:01 am  Politics
Aug 252018

Experts in autocracies have pointed out that it is, unfortunately, easy to slip into normalizing the tyrant, hence it is important to hang on to outrage. These incidents which seem to call for the efforts of the Greek Furies (Erinyes) to come and deal with them will, I hope, help with that. As a reminder, though no one really knows how many there were supposed to be, the three names we have are Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone. These roughly translate as “unceasing,” “grudging,” and “vengeful destruction.”

So, we have midterm elections coming up. And our last big election two years ago was hacked big time, ncluding by foreign influence. And, ever since Citizens United, we’ve been seeing the huge influence of money, and particularly “dark money,” in our elections, much of it taking the form of donations through and from PACs. Now, even though states are responsible for handling their own elections, we do have a Federal Election Commission. an agency that enforces the regulations brought into being by legislation, court decisions, and executive order – an agency which was already overwhelmed during the Obama administration, and I hope no one thinks that ANY agency is going to fare any better under the present regime than it did before it.

In fact, PACs are making new loopholes, exploiting old ones, and just flat ignoring some regulatory requirements, notably deadlines. And lest anyone think it is just right-leaning PACs doing this, I’m sorry to have to say that left-leaning PACs can be just as sneaky.

Mere days after it sprang to life in a burst of paperwork, the new super PAC Red and Gold spent nearly $1 million attacking Rep. Martha McSally, a battleground GOP Senate candidate favored by Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. But first, Red and Gold took a step to hide its tracks.

Red and Gold sent a brief note to the Federal Election Commission informing regulators that it would file monthly reports showing who financed the group. Its first disclosure “will be due on September 20,” the super PAC wrote — more than three weeks after McSally’s Arizona Republican primary is over.

It wasn’t the first super PAC to pull that trick: The scheme is part of a sharp escalation in super PACs avoiding reporting requirements and keeping voters in the dark about their funding until after key elections. Two other groups aired more than $3 million in attack ads in West Virginia’s GOP Senate primary this year and used the same method to dodge the FEC until after the May 8 vote. Overall, at least two dozen super PACs that spent millions of dollars in recent elections used loopholes to get out of revealing their donors, according to information compiled by the Campaign Legal Center, a watchdog organization.  [emphasis mine]

I must point out that most of these groups ended up making their filings and revealing their donors, but – and this is the point – not until after the elections they were spending in were over. One of the ways to do this is to spend money only very close to the election, so that by the time the filings are done, the election will be over. and then, some actually didn’t file, at all. Once a super PAC has found a loophole, others tend to say “Oh, that’s cool – let’s do that.”

That’s what happened with Highway 31, the super PAC that spent more than $4 million supporting Democrat Doug Jones during the contentious Alabama special election in 2017. In an unprecedented move, Highway 31 reported debts to its vendors but no donors on its pre-election FEC report — essentially, the super PAC’s ad-makers loaned the group the funds to spotlight allegations that Republican Roy Moore had been banned from a shopping mall because he made advances toward a 14-year-old girl. It wasn’t until after Jones won that Highway 31 revealed it was largely funded by Senate Majority PAC, the super PAC run by allies of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

The entities which on paper “loaned” money to Highway 31 could wind up in a bind under Federal law – or not – it might be very difficult to prosecute, and the PACs themselves are in the clear. They followed their reporting schedules. You might think that Republicans would be eager to prosecute Democrats if they could; but now a Republican PAC, Ohio First, which is pushing Jim Renacci for Senate (against Sherrod Brown), is doing the same thing. It has reported debts but no spending, and therefore, also no donors.

Both these PACs actually copycatted two competing PACs in West Virginia, one of which was funded by Democratic donors, and the other by the Senate Leadership Fund, Mitch McConnell’s super PAC. Oops.

Ohio First is one of the PACs which actually went so far as to disregard a key filing deadline, so the FEC could conceivably slap it with a $17,000 fine for that. However, as Campaign Legal Center, a group which is watching these PACs and filing complaints, points out, if such fines are imposed, the PACs will likely consider them “a small fee for keeping their donors secret.” In other words, a cost of doing business.

Alecto and Tisiphone, perhaps you could look into this. I need Megaera to address a different problem – to wit, the way that SOME white women use tears as a weapon, and how, these days, some of the most affected victims are women of color.

So, here’s Lisa Benton Cooper, a reporter (now an ex-reporter) at KSHB-TV 41 Action News. She already has a discrimination complaint against the station going, but is still employed there. She also has a Facebook page, which is set to private, viewable only by herself and friends. A couple of those friends are women colleagues at the station. On that page, she shared an article from The Guardian about a diversity conference in Sydney, Australia, written by Ruby Hamad, who is a journalist and a PhD candidate at the University of New South Wales.

The article is an opinion piece, but it’s solidly backed with citations; apparently Ms. Hamad grasps the concept of research. It’s not a blanket condemnation of all whites, or all white women, or whatever. But “two white females” who saw the post and who worked at the station complained to human resources (no word on whether they were in tears at the time). Thereafter, Cooper was suspended for making “broad, unfair characterizations of white women as a group based on their race and gender.”

Learning of this, Ruby Hamad took to Twitter. Well, you can hardly blame her – by the action they took in criticizing her article, the “two females” in fact proved its point. But in the process, it was Lisa Benson Cooper who was hurt. Megaera, I don’t know what you’ll have to do to get the point across – but you Erinyes are very good at doing that. If you have to get the point across to every white woman in the world – well, every one who – weaponizes tears; some of us don’t – you will certainly need reinforcements. We’ve seen a lot of it lately – Barbeque Becky comes to mind, but she’s far from the only one. Good luck.

The Furies and I will be back.
