Everyday Erinyes #134

Experts in autocracies have pointed out that it is, unfortunately, easy to slip into normalizing the tyrant, hence it is important to hang on to outrage. These incidents which seem to call for the efforts of the Greek Furies (Erinyes) to come and deal with them will, I hope, help with that. As a reminder, though no one really knows how many there were supposed to be, the three names we have are Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone. These roughly translate as “unceasing,” “grudging,” and “vengeful destruction.”

You may remember how furious I was when the regime of Orange Judas started deporting veterans, and how even more furious I was when it started to deport active duty military, both of which groups had signed up in good faith to help in ways that there simply were not enough citizens qualified to do (such as language skills), and whose honorable actions were a compelling case for them to be granted citizenship. If you do, imagine how furious I am now that it has started to DEPORT CITIZENS.

The State Department is calling into question the legal status of Latinx citizens along the southern border based on the claim that “there has been a significant incidence of citizenship fraud” in the region, though there is evidence of no more than a handful of cases. In 2009, the government seemed to have settled the matter in court with the ACLU before Trump’s State Department recently resurrected this xenophobic conspiracy theory. As a result, Latinx citizens residing near the southern border have been denied passports, prevented from re-entering the country without warning, detained in immigration camps and scheduled for deportation proceedings.

For years right-wing pundits have harped upon the importance of coming to the United States legally — “doing it the right way.” But if they mean what they say, then how can they support the denial of citizenship to documented Latinxs who were born in the US? If the hackneyed reactionary refrain that anti-immigrant policies are about legality rather than racism is true, then why is the Trump administration planning to make it harder for legal immigrants to obtain green cards and citizenship?

Not, perhaps, surprisingly, U. S. citizens attempting to use valid passports are also being affected. From the Washington Post, quoted at Daily Kos,

In some cases, passport applicants with official U.S. birth certificates are being jailed in immigration detention centers and entered into deportation proceedings. In others, they are stuck in Mexico, their passports suddenly revoked when they tried to reenter the United States. As the Trump administration attempts to reduce both legal and illegal immigration, the government’s treatment of passport applicants in South Texas shows how U.S. citizens are increasingly being swept up by immigration enforcement agencies.

This is short, today, but I see no point in piling stories on stories, or ranting about how this was here all the time; it was behind all the furor about Barack Obama’s citizenship, and we should have looked closer at how seriously they were taking that, and if we had, we might have seen sooner exactly how huge the enemy was and is that we have to fight.  (But maybe we should have.)

Mark Bray, writing in Truthout, makes an interesting case that it’s difficult to fight this kind of thing by attacking it as breaking the law, because the word “law” doesn’t mean to fascists what it does to sane people. They believe they are defending a “natural law” which is higher than artificial laws enacted by “paper-pushers.” I think we’ve seen this same attitude in “evangelical Christians” – the ones who, among other things, shoot up women’s health clinics and murder doctors. But, in the United States, in our lifetimes, we have not seen it so blatantly expressed by people who are already in government. The closest my memory can come to that is Nixon’s “if the President does it, it’s not a crime.” Shocking as that was, maybe we didn’t listen deeply enough to it.

Alecto, Magaera, Tisiphone, I have to tell you that Puerto Ricans have already called upon Chupacabra, but, unfortunately, he has been unable t gag Orange Judas down. So now I’d like you to run down to Mexico (you may not have to go all the way as there have been some sightings in New Mexico, although not recently) and look up La Llorona. If she can be brought to understand that [a] despite his over-six-foot height, Donald J. Trump has the mind and the emotional maturity of a two-year-old, and is therefore actually a child, and that [b] the Potomac is lovely this time of year, perhaps she can be persuaded to help us.

The Furies and I will be back.

Pat followed Politics Plus and commented for quite some time on Care2, where she has been active for years, before she started commenting here at the site.  A few months later, she won her first Big Mouth Award for the 78,000th comment in May 2016. She became a daily regular and won her second award for the 85,000th comment in December 2016 and her third for the 93,000th comment in October 2017.  She won her fourth for 97,000 in March, 2018.  This is her fifth award. She is a progressive activist, an authentic Christian, a proud veteran, and a Michael Moore Fan.  If you tell her to go to hell, she’s likely to answer, “I already live there.”  The poor girl is still a Texan. On the other hand, she loves her Houston Texans.  Her comments are still bright, witty and above all, compassionate.  She always greets WWWendy on shower day! My only complaint is her ongoing refusal to join our fantasy football league.

Last month, Mitch won the award for the 100,000th comment, but opted mot to accept his prize, so that prize passes on to the next winner, Pat.  She will receive a Politics Plus mug and a Politics Plus Tee Shirt!  I could not imagine a more worthy recipient.

Please join me in piling on her with well-deserved congrats, kudos and praise.

Another month is coming to an end, and here in the CatBox, the morning was cool, but the sum hit the wall, and I had to button up.  I have a very busy weekend with a mug and Tee Shirt to order, a new poll to get out, and a Monthly Report.  Because the 2nd is a WWWendy day, I plan to publish the report on the third.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 3:58 (average 5:16).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Religious Ecstasy:

As enjoyable as this is, it had little meaning, as none of the starters played.  Next week, the Holy Ellipsoid Orb will shine its light in earnest, and the games will count.

From YouTube (MSNBC Channel): Donald Trump Frantic To Shore Up Base As Scandals Deepen, Insiders Flip

The Republican Party faithful 45 years ago were misled but decent. The Party faithful today are a deplorable slurry of racists, nativists, homophobes, misogynists, anti-environmentalists, KKK, Nazis and stupid sheeple.. Today’s Republican base will goose-step no matter what their Fuhrer says or does. RESIST!! VOTE BLUE!!

From Politico: Sixty percent of those polled in a new survey disapprove of President Donald Trump’s job performance, a new high for the president in joint polling conducted by The Washington Post and ABC News.

The poll, released Friday and conducted just days after special counsel Robert Mueller delivered a one-two punch to the Trump administration in federal court, found a little more than one-third of Americans approve of Trump’s job performance. The poll was conducted last week, when former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort was found guilty on tax and bank fraud charges and Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen pleaded guilty to eight counts, including campaign finance violations, in a Manhattan courtroom.

Trump’s approval rating, according to the poll, was 36 percent.

That’s expected, but this is frightening. That 36% not only vote, but even worse, they interbreed reproduce! RESIST!! VOTE BLUE!!

From Alternet: Hours after he launched yet another "direct attack" on workers by canceling a modest pay raise for around two million federal employees, President Donald Trump told Bloomberg on Thursday that he is considering a regressive and possibly illegal plan to use his executive power to hand the rich another $100 billion in tax cuts by indexing capital gains to inflation.

That is the Republican way. They take from workers to provide another $100 billion in welfare to 0.1% billionaires.  RESIST!!  VOTE BLUE!!

Well, unfortunately my carpet cleaning guy texted me late Wednesday evening that he had to go to the ER & is now in the hospital for observation.  Told him I hope it was nothing major and wished him well – but I haven’t heard anything more from him.  But I’m NOT getting my carpets cleaned today.

I will say the cat is very befuddled because in getting ready I moved all the easily moveable furniture into the family room (it has a wood floor) and the guest bedroom (really didn’t need cleaning).  He misses a lot of his favorite napping spots.  Plus it’s a real obstacle course for me to maneuver around now.

So I’m throwing together a quick, mini “Friday Fun” – because next Friday I’ll be in absentia while visiting with friends from Wisconsin.

In an effort to encourage STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math) studies, I’m featuring some fun, nerdy science t-shirts:

A Cancer on Our Democracy

Last night, Sen. Elizabeth Warren interviewed with Ari Melber and tore Trump a third sphincter, in addition to the one in the standard location and the one under his nose.  She called Trump a "cancer on our democracy".  Rather than comment extensively myself, here is a brief introductory article and the video.

0830WarrenTrump

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) blasted President Donald Trump Wednesday in an appearance on MSNBC’s "The Beat with Ari Melber," saying that his being implicated in the crimes of his former lawyer Michael Cohen show a deeper problem in American democracy.

Cohen pleaded guilty last week to eight counts of crimes in federal court. Two of the counts included campaign finance crimes, which he said he was directed to carry out by Trump.

"He has certainly implicated Donald Trump, he’s making clear the connections here," Warren said. "And I’m sure that everybody is listening who is involved in the investigation of the deeper relationship between Russia, the Trump campaign, Donald Trump himself. And now, whatever is happening in connection with the Justice Department in trying to shut down the investigation."…

I can’t wait! When the investigations get going, we set a record for sore Republican sphincters in one place. RESIST!! VOTE BLUE!!

From Daily Kos: Donald Trump started the morning with a string of allegations, including accusing NBC and Lester Holt of “fudging my tape on Russia.” Which would appear to be a claim that Holt had somehow altered or edited the interview that he conducted with Trump on May 11, 2017, just after Trump fired James Comey. In that interview, Trump admitted that the reason for Comey’s firing was that he refused to halt the Russia investigation.

Trump: In fact, when I decided to just do it, I said to myself, I said, you know, this Russia thing with Trump and Russia is a made up story.

Since that interview, Trump has neither backed away from that statement nor made any public claim that Holt altered the interview. In fact, both Trump and attorney Rudy Giuliani have adopted the “article two powers” defense, arguing that Trump can fire anyone he wants for any reason. Why Trump is now making a claim that Holt “fudged” the interview in some way isn’t clear. It’s even less clear why Trump would believe that Holt already “got caught” fudging the interview or that it “hurt [NBC] badly.”

Florida and Arizona

0829Priomaries

Last night there were a couple primary races I found noteworthy in Florida and Arizona.  They include the governors’ races in Florida and the race for Jeff Flake’s Senate seat in Arizona.  Of course, one of the Republican candidates stooped to racial slurs in less than a day, but that’s what we expect from Republicans.

Andrew Gillum, a Social Democrat supported by Bernie Sanders won the Democratic primary for Governor of Florida in a huge upset over the more traditional candidate.  Here is his victory speech.

I might be concerned about a candidate so progressive in a very red state, but his opponent is Ron DeSantis, a self-styled Trump clone.  He demonstrated his similarity to his Fuhrer in short order.

As much as I think his claims that this wasn’t racist are pure bull, lets assume he’s telling the truth.  If his statement was innocent, for him not to plan that such a statement will be interpreted that way in today’s political climate is too incompetent to be considered for Dawg Catcher, let alone Senator.

In the Arizona Senate race, Republican Kelli Ward and Joe Arpaio split the most extreme fascist votes, allowing Martha McSally, a Bought Bitch Mitch clone, to eke out a win.  Already she is five points down in the Real Clear Politics average, behind Democratic nominee Kyrsten Sinema.  Here she is.

Now don’t forget…

From Newsweek: Adult film star Stormy Daniels has taken a dig at president Donald Trump’s sexual performance—suggesting the businessman “maybe” lasted two minutes in bed.

Speaking in an interview with Vogue that was published on Tuesday, Daniels was asked for details about her alleged sexual encounter with Trump.

“How many details can you really give about two minutes?” Daniels responded. Pressed further by interviewer Amy Chozick, who responded “Two minutes?” Daniels quipped, “Maybe. I’m being generous.”

Two minutes? I’m shocked. Who would have imagined such staying power! Stormy must be being infinitely generous! RESIST!! VOTE BLUE!!
