Here is the one hundred fifty-seventh article in our Republicans on Parade series, featuring individuals who personify what the Republican Party has become. Today’s winner is Republican Coverup General, William “Barf Bag” Barr. He is so honored for protecting his beloved Fuhrer from the consequences of his many crimes.

0410Barr…While refusing to further characterize Mueller’s findings, Barr offered the lawmakers a few additional morsels that were not previously known. He said the process of redacting the report for public consumption is “going along very well” and that he would release it “within a week”—keeping to his mid-April timetable.

Democrats have assailed Barr’s plan for redacting four categories of information, warning that the attorney general could use the excisions to shield damaging findings about Trump from the public. And while lawmakers acknowledge that some information—such as classified intelligence on the Russian government—should be withheld from the public, they have argued that Congress needs the full, unredacted report to exercise its constitutional oversight responsibilities.

On that front, Barr left Democrats disappointed. He suggested that Congress might never see the most sensitive portions of Mueller’s report, much less the evidence the special counsel used to arrive at his conclusions, which Democrats have also demanded to see. Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee have already voted to authorize subpoenas for the full report and its underlying evidence, likely setting up a court battle with Barr.

“I don’t intend at this stage to send the full, unredacted report to the committee,” the attorney general told the appropriations panel. He was responding to a question from Republican Representative Tom Graves of Georgia, who sought to elicit a warning to members of Congress not to leak redacted portions of the report to the public…  [emphasis added]

Barr may be trying to force House Democrats to open an impeachment investigation as a prerequisite to getting the full report.  Rachel Maddow explains in depth.

Republicans could then use that “investigation” to motivate rabid sheeple for their campaigns.

Lawrence O’Donnell reported on the arrogance of Barr’s extreme partisanship.

I’m afraid a parade just isn’t enough for this Republican’s obstruction of justice.  We need Barr behind bars.

It’s a very busy day here in the CatBox.  Providence Home Medical Equipment is coming to exchange a 6-pack of full O2 tanks for my empties.  Store to Door is delivering my groceries, and I have to unpack and put them away.  This evening WWWendy is coming to destink the rancid TomCat.  It’s been very muggy here, so I really need that shower.  Happy Hump Day!

Short Takes:

From YouTube (CNN Channel): Hearing with Trump’s Treasury Secretary goes off the rails

Only a Republican could be such an asshole. He’s picking a fight to distract the hearing from its purpose. RESIST!!

From Vox: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has managed to hold on to power, winning what will be a record fifth term in office despite a bruising reelection fight.

The preliminary results from Israel’s Tuesday election have Netanyahu’s right-wing Likud party getting 35 seats out of a total 120 seats in the Knesset (Israel’s parliament). While Likud didn’t win an outright majority of seats, that’s typical in Israeli elections.

Party leaders generally become prime ministers by cobbling together a parliamentary majority with the help of smaller parties. In this case, a group of smaller right-wing parties expected to back Netanyahu seems to have captured 65 seats, enough to give him a 10-seat majority over the rival center-left bloc (the exact numbers could change as the remaining two percent of votes are tallied).

I can only offer my sincere condolences to the people of Israel and Palestine, who love peace. Even worse for them, Butcher Bibi is now beholden to a Republican monster, who is even more evil than he is. RESIST!!

From Daily Kos: There’s a Huckabee that everyone is talking about today, and surprisingly, it’s not White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. It’s actually her dad.

Remember former Arkansas governor and onetime Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee? He has some serious antics in his past. One thing that’s consistent is that he really, really doesn’t like the LGBTQ community. His feelings are so strong, he’s declared that the queer community is the “greatest threat” to America.

In an interview with The Christian Post [pseudo-Christians delinked], he bemoaned the (still limited) advances in rights and protections the LGBTQ community has gained in recent years. You know, how same-sex marriage is now recognized in every state, but you can still be fired for being openly transgender? That sort of thing.

Upchuckabee, like so many Republican Supply-side pseudo-Christians, does not need sex-change surgery. They need race-change surgery… to human. RESIST!!

Yesterday I covered the forced resignation of Republican Death Angel Kirstein Nielson as Homeland Security Secretary.  I said that her replacement will be worse.  I was only half right.  I now understand that it does not matter who replaces her.  That Republican will be just a figurehead.  The real person running the department is an extreme Republican white supremacist, a Bannon protégé, and a pal of neo-Nazi, Richard Spencer.  Trump told Stephen Miller that he is in charge of immigration.

0409Miller

As news broke of the abrupt departure of Kirstjen Nielsen, Donald Trump’s second homeland security secretary, reports swiftly followed that the move had been orchestrated by Stephen Miller, one of the administration’s sharpest anti-immigration voices.

Nielsen’s resignation on Sunday, following months of speculation, cast a spotlight on the forces behind the president’s controversial policies on immigration, where Miller has been shown to be squarely at the center of influence.

The senior adviser and speechwriter is the architect of some of the most restrictive components of Trump’s immigration agenda.

Bolstered by Trump’s frustration over promises including building a border wall and slashing legal immigration, Miller is poised to usher more hardliners into the administration, seeking to turn rhetoric into results…

As an added bonus Samantha Bee did a piece on him in January 2018.

It’s a tired day here in the CatBox.  The remains of the tumor in my retina are still shrinking and still quite dead, so I am a cancer-free puddy tat.  My eyes are still irritated, but not enough to keep me from working.  I don’t like being out of the loop for two days.

From YouTube (MSNBC Channel): Pete Buttigieg Breaks Through The Political Noise

That has to be one of the best slams of Republican Supply-side pseudo-Christian (the opposite of authentic Christian) hatred I have ever heard, I am very impressed. RESIST!!

From YouTube (Robert Reich Channel): Robert Reich: Socialism of the Rich, Capitalism for the Rest

Of course the Reich on the left, Robert Reich, is right, but I’ve been writing the same thing about the Reich on the right, the Republican Reich, since 2009, that I can document. RESIST!!

From The New Yorker: The redaction of the Mueller report stalled on Monday after the Attorney General, William Barr, passed out from inhaling fumes from multiple Sharpie markers.

Barr, who had been working around the clock to redact the report before its release, reportedly lost consciousness while trying to black out a seventy-four-page section detailing Donald Trump, Jr.,’s contacts with more than three dozen Russian individuals.

“You cannot use that many Sharpies, for hours on end, without proper ventilation,” a Justice Department staffer, speaking on condition of anonymity, said. “This was a disaster waiting to happen.”

The insentient Barr was rushed to Walter Reed medical center, where a grim-faced hospital spokesperson described his condition as “Ben Carson–like.”

Thanks for the scoop Andy. I’m sure it’s accurate.  RESIST!!

From Daily Kos: I’m sort of surprised I didn’t find this here, but here we go.

Alex Jones, purveyor of stupid conspiracies and making money off even stupider people, thought he could tough guy his way through Lucy’s Fried Chicken in Austin, TX.  While Texas is unfortunately red, many places (most cities) are strongly Democratic, with Austin perhaps being the most so.  (I’m in the DFW area, and we’re a close second in my opinion.)

For whatever reason, Alex decided this was a good forum to start calling people “libtards” and other creative names while roaming the restaurant like a lost raccoon looking for scraps.  You may think this would’ve amounted to a fight or otherwise a strong verbal altercation, but no.  The patrons laughed at him, made jokes, videoed it from who knows how many phones, and ultimately watched him get escorted out by management…

LMAO!!  I guess I’m not the only one that put that Republican asshole on parade. RESIST!!

Everyday Erinyes #161

Experts in autocracies have pointed out that it is, unfortunately, easy to slip into normalizing the tyrant, hence it is important to hang on to outrage. These incidents which seem to call for the efforts of the Greek Furies (Erinyes) to come and deal with them will, I hope, help with that. As a reminder, though no one really knows how many there were supposed to be, the three names we have are Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone. These roughly translate as “unceasing,” “grudging,” and “vengeful destruction.”

Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II is my kind of Christian (not that I am anywhere close to his moral stature – I mean he is the kind of Christian I can trust.) As the saying goes, he walks the talk. One of his favorite sayings is “Preaching is more than words,” meaning that the way we live our lives is the best kind of demonstration of what we believe; and he shows that in his own life by, just as Jesus did, spending it with the poor and the disenfranchised, and working to lift them up. So, when Dr. Barber speaks, I do my best to listen.

One thing which differentiates Dr. Barber from too many others claiming to be Christians is his deep respect for people’s faith, including the faith of those who worship differently from the way he does, and his ability to discuss that in terms which speak to those who don’t quite grasp it. At times it shames me that so many Americans care so little about Native Americans, and their faith, and in particular their religious attachment to their land. Not Dr. Barber. He “gets it.”

If a mining company wanted to tear down the Vatican to harvest the minerals underneath its soil, there would be a public outcry around the world. If an oil company wanted to build a drilling rig in the middle of Jerusalem, there would be protests far and wide. So why are these sacred tribal lands any different?

That quote is from an article about a battle which the San Carlos Apache tribe in Arizona has been fighting for three years, and in which time is running out. The land in question, in the Oak Flat area, includes places like Apache Leap and Devil’s Canyon. Time and time again, we – the United States – having made treaties with native Americans granting them land have tried to renege on the treaty, offering them land instead of “equal economic value.” The land we are offering is never of equal economic value to the land we are stealing in the first place, and, if it were, how would that justify destroying sacred places? But, here we go again:

In 1955, President Dwight D. Eisenhower designated Oak Flat as an area off-limits to mining. However, the 2015 National Defense Authorization Act authorized Resolution [Copper Co.] to use the land in Oak Flat in exchange for other lands in Arizona. This was supported by former Arizona senators, Jeff Flake and the late John McCain. The land Resolution wants to trade is scattered across the state and wouldn’t offer half the environmental and touristic value that Oak Flat currently holds. In addition to being sacred tribal land, Oak Flat is also a prime destination for climbers, hikers, and campers.

Resolution (a project of Rio Tinto) has been salivating over this project, as has Wilbur Ross, who has killing the regulations slowing down the project at the top of his “hit list.”

“A company shouldn’t have to be hundreds of millions of dollars into risk money without knowing whether there is a real chance it is going to get approved,” Ross told Reuters in a May 9[, 2017] interview, referring to [this] mine.

The project itself:

“There are mines this deep; there are mines this hot; and there are mines this big; but there are no other mines this deep, this hot and this big all together,” said Carl Hehnke, a geologist for Resolution.

At the time the article including those quotes (along with additional, terrifying statistics) was published, 130,000 comments from concerned citizens had been received by the government. But the comment period closed, and since then, as Dr. Barber points out, no one is talking about it. There’s just the San Carlos Apache tribe, the Arizona Mine Reform Coalition, and the Poor People’s Project of Repairers of the Breach – that’s all. There’s no petition (the comment period was supposed to take care of that), and who would be the petitionee? Wilbur Ross? Pffft.

There is the US Forest Service, of course –

If Resolution’s copper deposit had been discovered under private land – and not a national forest – Rio Tinto might have been spared the federal review and faced only state regulators. Instead, the U.S. Forest Service is leading the study, which will consider jobs, recreation, public health and wildlife.

It used to take seven to ten years for a mine to be approved. However, in January 2017, Republicans introduced a bill which would limit regulators to two and a half years to approve of reject a mine proposal. I’m guessing, since Dr. Barber says time is running out, that it passed.

Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone, it looks like it will take a miracle to get this stopped. I hope you are well rested from your two weeks off, because you’ll need all the energy you can get.

The Furies and I will be back.

Cross posted to Care2 HERE.

It’s that time of week again, so here are three interesting video clips from Bill’s show last night.  Enjoy!

Monologue: Double Down Politics

Bill makes a good point, It has been a hell of a week. I wonder if Trump would allow that woman to hack Mar a Lago in exchange for a happy ending or a golden shower.

Chelsea Handler: Life Will Be the Death of Me

“Alcohol and outrage are not a good mix.” Amen!

Overtime: Julián Castro, Chelsea Handler, Salman Rushdie, Danielle Pletka, Gideon Rose

“We can’t use the honor system, but one side is fresh out of honor. Good coverage of Brexit. Pletka is wrong about CNN and MSNBC. CNN is Center-Right, MSNBC is Center-Left. There is no Faux Noise Left.

I normally don’t include the overtime, but they did not release a New Rules clip this week.
