It’s a busy week here in the crappy old CatBox.  Yesterday TriMet recertified my chair and I for another three years.  Unless I go back to the shiny new CatBox  with WWWendy, my next trip out is Monday.  I have a Cat Scan.  The IV contrast is bad enough, but I HATE having to drink the oral contrast, which I call Cat Pee.  Today and tomorrow are the coolest days of the heat wave (low to mid 80°s).  Enjoy your day.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 2:53 (average 4:29).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

What gorgeous scenery!

Short Takes:

From YouTube (CNN Channel): Boris Johnson wins vote, expected to be UK prime minister

Poor UK! Boris Brexit is a Bridiot! RESIST!!

From Politico: President Donald Trump may have to hand out some new nicknames — for himself — after endorsing a bipartisan budget deal with Congress: “Trillion Dollar Trump?” “Deficit Don?”

With a new bipartisan budget deal that does nothing to cut federal spending, Trump is on track for another $1 trillion deficit this year. And there’s no reason to believe the following fiscal year will be any different, with ballooning deficits from higher spending, the 2017 tax cuts — Trump’s signature legislative achievement, which slashed revenue — and none of the entitlement reforms long preached by Republican leaders on Capitol Hill.

There is only one reasonable solution. It is undoing a decade of Republican welfare for the super-rich, combined with a steep wealth tax. RESIST!!

From The New Yorker: The billionaire Donald J. Trump’s bid to become a born-again Christian failed over the weekend after Jesus Christ turned down his friend request, campaign officials have acknowledged.

Jesus, who has not generally been active on Facebook, made a rare appearance on the social network on Monday to announce His decision to ignore the presumptive Republican nominee’s request for a personal relationship with Him.

In a brief post, Jesus offered the following explanation: “Just everything.”

The turndown from Jesus Christ, the inspiration behind one of the world’s most prominent religions, caps what has been a tough month for the Trump campaign.

Look Andy, that is just not credible. Trump would never try to befriend the real Jesus. Trump’s Jesus is a GOP invention, Republican Supply-side Jesus, whose gospel of greed, hate, racism, violence and death matches his own beliefs and those of the pseudo-Christians in the Republican Reich. RESIST!!

This is my only article today, with no links messages on Care2.  I should be back in the saddle until next Sunday and Monday.  The heat yesterday was severe.  My A/C made it bearable, but not by much.  I’ll probably need to leave before I publish this, so I’ll do it when I return.  OGIM!

Back!  It was quite painless.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 4:04 (average 5:18).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Take:

From Alternet: The only thing more disgusting than having to suffer Donald Trump’s outwardly racist remarks—complete with double-downs and repetitions—is watching Washington refuse to own them.

Trump continued on with his attacks on four vocal, left-leaning, first-year congresswomen, expressing feigned surprise that people have found the words racist. Does he really think we are that dumb or societally deaf?

The four struck back, of course, with just enough partisan talk to allow various congressional Republicans to try to redefine the matter as one of adverse politics rather than race—conveniently overlooking the fact that the four are women of color. The Republicans who make it to television seem to take an unusually smarmy delight in casting the four—and all Democrats, while they are at it, as socialists bent on destroying the nation.

And in Congress, Republicans chose to attack Speaker Nancy Pelosi for using the word “racist” on the floor toward a condemnation resolution rather than deal with the content.

Trump’s racism merely reflects the racism of the Republican Reich. RESIST!!

WWWendy will be here shortly, and after we destink the TomCat, we’re going to the shiny new CatBox to drop off a custom toilet seat and some grab bars.  This is my only article today, with no links messages on Care2.  It’s going to be be over 90° today.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 3:33 (average 5:10).  To do it, click here.  Hou did you do?

Short Take:

From The New Yorker: Historians studying archival photographs from four decades ago have come to the conclusion that the U.S. must have believed in science at some point.

According to the historian Davis Logsdon, who has been sifting through mounds of photographic evidence at the University of Minnesota, the nation apparently once held the view that investing in science and even math could yield accomplishments that would be a source of national pride.

Dang, Andy! Those photos are fakes. That moon shit was just entertainment to distract the libruls that believe such fantasies. Don’t you know the earth is flat? RESIST!!

Everyday Erinyes #175

Experts in autocracies have pointed out that it is, unfortunately, easy to slip into normalizing the tyrant, hence it is important to hang on to outrage. These incidents which seem to call for the efforts of the Greek Furies (Erinyes) to come and deal with them will, I hope, help with that. As a reminder, though no one really knows how many there were supposed to be, the three names we have are Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone. These roughly translate as “unceasing,” “grudging,” and “vengeful destruction.”

I have something else (partly) written, but it will keep. I fell into a story this morning which is important, and licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 License, so it can be quoted.

Incidentally, I have been predicting since the 1980’s that the US would be seeing a dumbing down of citizens due in part to children being exposed to “stuff.” Of course there are many other contributors, such as exponentially increased home schooling for all the wrong reasons (yes, there are some good reasons, but that’s not what we’re seeing, and in any case, good reasons would not account for the numbers), and yes, there are many people who grew up in the eighties and since, and who are growing up now, who are pretty clearly not impaired, but with so many Americans, there is clearly something going on. Naturally, Republicans not only don’t mind the existing conditions, but want to worsen them (I assume to ensure a steady supply of Republican voters.)

‘A Total Disgrace’: Outrage as Trump EPA Says It Won’t Ban Pesticide Linked to Brain Damage in Children

“The EPA is endangering the lives of children to protect pesticide industry profits.”

by Jake Johnson, staff writer

In a move environmentalists denounced as yet another case of the Trump administration putting industry profits over public health, the Environmental Protection Agency announced on Thursday that it will not ban chlorpyrifos, a pesticide linked to brain damage in children.

“By allowing chlorpyrifos to stay in our fruits and vegetables, Trump’s EPA is breaking the law and neglecting the overwhelming scientific evidence that this pesticide harms children’s brains,” Patti Goldman, attorney with Earthjustice said in a statement. “It is a tragedy that this administration sides with corporations instead of children’s health.”

EPA chief Andrew Wheeler’s decision to reject a petition by environmental groups calling for a ban on the neurotoxic chemical ignores the assessments of his agency’s own scientists, said Tiffany Finck-Haynes, pesticides and pollinators program manager for Friends of the Earth.

“The EPA’s refusal to ban chlorpyrifos ignores decades of science showing that this pesticide has irrevocable effects on human health and the environment,” said Finck-Haynes. “The EPA is endangering the lives of children to protect pesticide industry profits.”

Chlorpyrifos has been banned for household use since 2000, but the pesticide is still used by farmers on “more than 50 fruit, nut, cereal, and vegetable crops,” according to the New York Times.

“In 2016,” the Times reported, “more than 640,000 acres were treated with chlorpyrifos in California alone.”

The Obama administration in 2015 proposed banning use of the pesticide on food crops, but former EPA administrator Scott Pruitt authorized its continued use in 2017.

“This is a total disgrace,” Rep. Mike Levin (D-Calif.) tweeted in response to the EPA’s decision on Thursday.

Finck-Haynes of Friends of the Earth said that as the federal government continues to work on behalf of chemical interests, states must take immediate action to protect the public and the environment.

“While the federal government refuses to act, we urge states to step in, ban chlorpyrifos, and demonstrate that they will safeguard public health and the environment,” said Finck-Haynes. “We call on [New York] Governor [Andrew] Cuomo to sign the chlorpyrifos ban bill sitting on his desk and protect New Yorkers from this toxic pesticide.”

In a statement on Thursday, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) highlighted the Trump administration’s ties to Dow Chemical, the largest producer of chlorpyrifos in the United States.

“The relationship between President Trump and Dow Chemical… has been called into question,” the group said. “Among other things, the chemical manufacturing giant reportedly donated $1 million for Trump’s inauguration, and its CEO previously played a chief advisory role to the president, heading up his now defunct American Manufacturing Council.”

Erik Olson, senior director of health and food at NRDC, said the effort to achieve a ban on chlorpyrifos will continue.

“Until EPA gets this stuff out of our fields and off our food,” said Olson, “this fight is not over.”
==================================================================
Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone, I despair of the current national regime. But maybe you could help the states pass legislation of their own. Some are already doing so, but more are needed.

The Furies and I will be back.

An Example of RepubliCare

Posted by at 9:35 am  Politics
Jul 202019

It’s not often that we get as good an example of RepubliCare as this.  When the treatment fleeces the recipients of everything they have and kills them, that’s the RepubliCare Death Benefit.  The Republican Reich provides death at no extra charge.  In this example, greedy Republican corporate criminals intentionally addict millions to opioids.  Then they feed them more and more pills, via the black market, until it kills them.

The Walgreens employee was bewildered by the quantity of opioids the company was shipping to just one store. Its pharmacy in Port Richey, Fla. (population 2,831) was ordering 3,271 bottles of oxycodone a month.

“I don’t know how they can even house this many bottles to be honest,” Barbara Martin, whose job was to review suspicious drug orders, wrote to a colleague in a January 2011 email. The next month, the company shipped another outsized order to the same store.

The email was among thousands of documents from corporations across the pharmaceutical and retail industries — internal memos, depositions, sales and shipping reports, experts’ analyses, and other confidential information — filed Friday in federal court in Cleveland by lawyers for cities, towns and counties devastated by addiction. They lay out a detailed case of how diverse corporate interests — far beyond the familiar players like Purdue Pharma — fed a deadly opioid epidemic that persisted for nearly two decades.

Little-known manufacturers of generic pills, superstores like Walmart and chain retailers like Rite Aid also flooded the country with billions of pills, according to the filings. The devastation was so extreme that one Ohio county resorted to a mobile morgue to handle all the corpses of people who died from overdoses… [emphasis added]

Inserted from <NY Times>

Rachel Maddow did a superior job of bringing this crisis to light.

Let me be clear.  Opioids are not the problem.  I use Oxycodone for phantom limb pain.  I very seldom need one and average one pill every month or two, but when I do, it’s the only thing that stops severe pain in a limb that no longer exist.  The problem is sales and marketing by Republicans that is so abusive that they are murdering people for profit.  These Republicans need to do hard time, and lots of it!

I’m moving into a heat wave, here in the crappy old CatBox for the next several days, but nowhere nearly as bad as what you guys in the East and Midwest will get.  Please take care!  For the next two days, please expect no more than a Personal Update with no links messages on Care2.  Tomorrow is a WWWendy day to destink the rancid TomCat, and we’re going to the shiny new CatBox.  Monday, I have to go to TriMet for lift bus recertification.  I need to prove that I have not grown a new leg and that my power chair has not mutated.

From YouTube (a blast from the past): Watch Neil Armstrong’s first steps on the moon

The only thing they could have done better is to give the honor to be first on the moon to a cat. Ah… the memories. RESIST!!

From YouTube (Oregonian Channel):Portland protestors throw fake blood on street in front of ICE headquarters

Kudos to the protestors! Oregon leads the way! Put ICE on ice! RESIST!

From NY Times: Gabriel Weinberg is taking aim at Google from a small building 20 miles west of Philadelphia that looks like a fake castle. An optometrist has an office downstairs.

Mr. Weinberg’s company, DuckDuckGo, has become one of the feistiest adversaries of Google. Started over a decade ago, DuckDuckGo offers a privacy-focused alternative to Google’s search engine.

The company’s share of the search engine market is still tiny — about 1 percent compared with Google’s 85 percent, according to StatCounter. But it has tripled over the past two years and is now handling around 40 million searches a day. It has also made a profit in each of the last five years, Mr. Weinberg said.

Mr. Weinberg, 40, is among the most outspoken critics of the internet giants. DuckDuckGo’s chief executive has repeatedly called for new privacy-focused legislation and has warned at hearings and in newspaper opinion pieces about the problems that big companies can cause by tracking our every move online.

I often use DuckDuckGo for research and recommend it. RESIST!!

“To Sleep: Perchance to Dream”

Hamlet, Act III, Scene I

Yesterday we were all excited (and relieved!) to learn of TomCat’s securing his new Cat Box, with the move planned in about two weeks.

Over the years, TC has shared with us the travails at his other domiciles of inability to maintain a comfortable environment. It seemed to always be too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter. He was never able to obtain a Goldilocks climate of “Just Right”.

Understandably, this has wreaked havoc with his ability to enjoy a good night’s sleep. But from his updates, it sounds like the new Madrona Apartments will provide the relief needed!

This is reassuring news, because we all know that Cats are known for their ability to sleep in any place and any position – and I’m here to provide proof.

It’s summer – so a grill is a great spot to catch a few winks

And we all know there is NO box too small that it won’t accommodate a (determined) critter.

Obviously a cat-lover had a hand in designing this cup holder

This beat-up old gym shoe might have had an “olfactory factor” adding to this guy’s snooze

This is definitely a prickly location

And who among us hasn’t sat in a classroom with a teacher who has had the same effect on us?

“No, really … I’m exercising!”

“VROOOOMMMM!”

I think this one is dreaming of Thanksgiving drumsticks

The next two prove that there are really FOUR different states of matter: Solid, Liquid, Gas and Cat

And while we’re talking science, who knew cats could defy gravity?

Monorail Cat

♫ “Rubber Ducky, You’re the One …” ♫

“Tell her to cut down on the bleach”

“Geez … this is getting old.  Hasn’t she ever heard of Swifter?”

There’s celebrating, and then there’s CELEBRATING!

But there could also be a gutter (quite lieterally) with your name on it!

A Paragon of Corruption

Do you remember Stinky Zinke, infamous for corruption, luxury charter flights at your expense and theft of your public land for polluters?  His successor, David Bernhardt, aka Bernfart, is even worse.  Stinky made you pay through the nose to move him around.  Bernfart wants you to pay through the nose to move the Interior Department to him.  He’s so sleazy that he generated an ethics investigation in less than a week after confirmation.

0719DavidBernhardt

The Interior Department’s internal watchdog has opened an investigation into ethics complaints against the agency’s newly installed secretary, David Bernhardt.

Mr. Bernhardt, a former lobbyist for the oil and agribusiness industries, was confirmed by the Senate last week to head the agency, which oversees the nation’s 500 million acres of public land and vast coastal waters. He has played a central role in writing policies designed to advance President Trump’s policy of “energy dominance” and expanding fossil fuel exploration. He has been dogged by allegations of ethics violations since joining the Trump administration as the Interior Department’s deputy secretary in 2017.

Eight senators, all Democrats, and four government ethics watchdog groups have requested that the Interior Department’s inspector general open formal investigations into various aspects of Mr. Bernhardt’s conduct. Among the chief complaints have been allegations, revealed by three separate New York Times investigations, that Mr. Bernhardt used his position to advance a policy pushed by his former lobbying client; that he continued working as a lobbyist after filing legal paperwork declaring that he had ceased lobbying; and that he intervened to block the release of a scientific report showing the harmful effects of a chemical pesticide on certain endangered species.

In a letter sent Monday to the senators who filed the ethics complaints, Mary L. Kendall, the deputy inspector general of the Interior Department, wrote that she had received seven complaints from “a wide assortment of complainants alleging various conflicts of interest and other violations” by Mr. Bernhardt, adding that she had “opened an investigation to address them.”… RESIST!!

That article was from April 15.  On moving the Department, here’s Rachel Maddow.

Here’s the Rule of Republican Reich.  Whenever a Republican turd is flushed, the next one smells even worse.
